Summary

Follow-up to #1181. It covers the points its quality pass left (the quality-sweep threads), the recording refactor announced there, and the code-quality findings from its last review.

Lost or wrong diagnostics

  • A refusal's www-authenticate header ended redaction of everything after it, so the headers that say who refused (cf-ray, retry-after, x-amzn-requestid) were lost. Each kept header is now redacted on its own line.
  • Once a server's absence note fell out of the 500-record history, that server was never noted again until Clear. Each server now remembers its note's record, and eviction frees it. The same goes for the "further servers aren't listed" note.
  • A map tile answered 410 (gone) made a failure record each time, although the map draws it as a gap. Map tiles now omit 410 as well as 404. get_tile serves every tile source, so this applies to any tile server, not only WMTS.
  • "Basic API configuration failed" was redacted as a Basic credential. A word after a line-initial Basic now needs a digit, punctuation, 16+ characters, or 8+ characters with a capital inside. Basic OAuthToken is still redacted.
  • The pane showed the source words Application, Network and Plugin untranslated. They are translated at display. Stored values, filters, the copied report and command ids are unchanged.
  • Removing URL user information dropped the sentence's colon (https://example.org/ timeout), and a trailing , ; ) . joined the host (https://example.org,/). The mark now stays after the address.
  • The copied report printed Rust's debug form (status: Some(503)). It prints status: 503; duration: 7 ms and leaves out what a request didn't have.

One way to record a request's failure
RequestDiagnostics::record(result) records a failure and passes the result through. The six wrapper/inner pairs (fetch_answer, head_with and post_with on the desktop; fetch_bytes, post_json and head in the browser) become one function each, with the request as an inline closure or async block. Behaviour is unchanged. A failed local read still makes no network record.

Less work per notice
A notice was redacted two or three times on its way to the status bar and the history. A notice that is already redacted is now only bounded on its way into the history. That path takes a Redacted, a type only redact can make, so raw text can't skip redaction. redact also no longer allocates per word, and its duplicated helpers are one each. Capture::note_absence (was absence_said) takes the request's real method and bounds an oversized address before parsing it. download_blocking_expecting is renamed download_blocking_omitting.

Docs: absence notes and the 64-server cap, the copied report's order and timestamps (which differ from the pane's), and a mid-line password: several words being kept.

Left for the maintainers:

  • The View › Windows Diagnostics button reuses the Identify "i" icon. Command Search lists Diagnostics next to Diagnostic Monitor.
  • The pane repaints every 500 ms while open. Worker-thread notices have no waker, so removing the poll would hide them until the next input.
  • Tile omission is a list ([404, 410]), while warp::missing also counts 400, 405 and 451 as gaps.
  • The copied report keeps its order and timestamps (documented). Matching the pane would be a behaviour change.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci (fmt, clippy -D warnings, all tests, layers), pre-commit run --all-files and cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web pass on the final head.
  • New tests, each checked to fail without its change where stated:
    • network_diagnostics_keep_headers_after_a_credential_header (fails without per-line redaction)
    • network_diagnostics_skip_gone_map_tiles_and_keep_server_errors (fails with the list at [404])
    • network_diagnostics_skip_failed_local_reads (fails without the local-read exception)
    • absences_are_said_again_once_their_note_leaves_the_history
    • absence_notes_name_the_method_and_bound_oversized_addresses (two oversized servers get a note each; fails with the old size guard)
    • redaction_is_idempotent
    • text_already_redacted_is_only_bounded
    • reports_print_plain_values_and_leave_out_what_is_absent
    • removing_user_information_keeps_the_sentence_punctuation
    • two more keep cases in prose_naming_credentials_keeps_its_words
  • The browser request bodies (web.rs) have no native tests; the wasm build covers them.
  • Most of the web.rs and cache.rs lines are re-indentation of the request bodies moved inline: git diff -w shows +512 −204 lines instead of +912 −604.
  • Reviewed with review-loop: 1 round, 3 findings fixed, 0 declined. The review fixes (f4cd869, 2b85cbc) had 3 more rounds: approved, 1 nit deferred.

UI evidence

No visible UI change in English. In other languages, the Diagnostics pane's source word "Plugin" shows in that language. "Application" and "Network" have no catalog rows yet and show in English. Not rendered.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Diagnostics include one note per server for omitted 404/410 responses, with an additional notice when the server limit is reached. A server can be noted again after its note leaves the history or diagnostics are cleared.
    • Diagnostic reports show clearer network status and duration details, with localized source labels in the diagnostics pane. Copying diagnostics follows the selected filter.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Network diagnostics better protect sensitive information in URLs, headers, and error messages.
    • Expected missing tiles and files are handled without being reported as unexpected failures.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance explains diagnostic filtering, copied report formatting, and credential redaction.

RequestDiagnostics::record passes a request's result through and records
its failure. The six wrapper/inner pairs on the desktop and in the browser
become one function each, the request an inline closure or async block,
so each request is created, sent and recorded in one place. A failed
local read still makes no network record; a test now says so.
…, source labels

- A kept response header is redacted on its own line: a www-authenticate
header no longer drops the headers after it (cf-ray, x-amzn-requestid).
- An absence note that leaves the 500-record history frees its server (and
the 'further servers' note) to be said again, not only Clear.
- Map tiles omit 410 as well as 404: the map draws both as a gap.
- 'Basic API configuration failed' keeps its words: a word after Basic is
  base64-shaped with a digit or punctuation, 16+ characters, or 8+ with a
  capital inside.
- The pane translates the source words Application, Network and Plugin.
- Docs: a mid-line 'password: several words' is kept; extra blank lines.
- A notice already redacted is only bounded when it enters the history
  (History::push_redacted, Session::notify_redacted), not redacted again.
- redact no longer allocates per word: names with nothing to decode aren't
copied, scheme words are compared without a String. Key normalisation,
ellipsis cut, bidi controls and address cleaning are one helper each.
- note_absence (was absence_said) names the request's real method and
bounds an oversized address before parsing it.
- The copied report prints plain words (status: 503; duration: 7 ms),
leaving out what a request didn't have.
- Removing URL user information keeps the sentence's colon.
- download_blocking_expecting is download_blocking_omitting, like the rest.
- Comments say an omitted status is noted once per server; network_failure
says what it keeps. Docs: absence notes, the 64-server cap, report format.
- Drop two engine test asserts that could not fail.
…410 tiles

History::push_redacted and Session::notify_redacted take a Redacted, which
only redact can make, so the compiler checks that the text is clean rather
than a doc comment. A test pins that a gone (410) map tile is noted, not
recorded, and a server error still is. redact's doc says what a field is
mid-line.
Long string literals kept rustfmt from indenting the browser fetch_bytes
body and one native error; they are split now. An oversized absence
address counts with the unparseable ones, as the comment now says.

Request diagnostics and expected omissions
crates/tiles/src/cache.rs, apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/zarr.rs
Routes request results through diagnostics recording, treats 410 as an expected tile omission alongside 404, and renames the omission-aware blocking download API. Existing request checks and limits remain. Tests cover omissions, header redaction, and local-read failures.
Application notices and diagnostic display
crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/*, docs/privacy.md, docs/user-guide/index.md
Passes pre-redacted command errors through notice handling and translates recognized diagnostic source labels. Documentation describes diagnostic filters, omissions, copied reports, and credential redaction. A test comment states that saved project text should contain no diagnostic history; a separate reopening assertion is removed.

Explanation

The title names the three main threads of the change: header redaction after a credential header, absence-note re-recording after eviction, and the single-function request failure recording via RequestDiagnostics::record. Each is present in the raw summary and the PR objectives. The title is long (128 characters) and lists several items, so it is broad. It still refers to real, central parts of the changeset and is not off-topic.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has Summary, Testing, UI evidence, and Related issue sections. The Summary explains the changes and their reasons in detail. The Testing section lists the commands run and the new tests with notes on which ones fail without their change. The UI evidence section states that there is no visible English UI change and explains the translation-only effect, which fits the template's requirement to keep the 'no visible UI change' line when none exists. The Related issue section links to #1155. The template's placeholder for the 'No visible UI change.' line was replaced by a longer explanation, which is acceptable. The description is complete and specific.

This change removed the two assertions that were the only check that diagnostics stay out of a saved project: the serde_json::to_string(&s.project) check and the reopened-session check. docs/user-guide/index.md and docs/privacy.md still say "Nothing is saved in .rgis projects", so that promise now has no test. The new test name ("survive a new project") covers the in-session part only. Restoring the removed lines, before s.run("project.new", …), would keep the guard. Confidence: medium. I did not find another test that covers this.

Fixed in 2b85cbc: the saved-project assert is back, guarding the docs' promise; the reopened-session assert stays removed, since Session::new always starts a fresh history, so it couldn't fail.

Code review

Summary: I found no confirmed bugs. I checked the call-site signatures (Failure::new, tl!, the renamed download_blocking_omitting), the overflow note's filter path, the decoding fast path in secret_name, and the trailing-colon handling in redact. One inline comment is posted, on the test-coverage point below. There were no earlier review threads on this PR, so no prior concerns were skipped.

Bugs: None confirmed.

Security:

  • base64_shaped now keeps short Basic tokens (under 8 characters, with no digit or padding), so a very short credential such as the base64 of u:p (dTpw) is no longer redacted after a line-initial Basic. The change is deliberate and documented in the code comment. Impact is low because only credentials of about 5 bytes or less are affected. Confidence: about 30%.
  • Mid-line password: several words is kept, which is also a privacy trade-off. That behaviour predates this PR, and this PR only documents it in docs/privacy.md. I am noting it as context, not as a new finding.

Performance: No concerns. The new secret_name fast path avoids allocations when a name has no % or \, and store now does a retain over at most 64 entries per eviction.

Quality:

  • Test coverage (inline comment posted on crates/engine/src/tests.rs): the removed assertions were the only check that a saved project omits diagnostics, and the docs still promise that. Confidence: medium.
  • Nits, which may wait for the release quality pass: the immediately-invoked (|| -> … { … })() pattern in head_with, post_with and fetch_answer reads less plainly than a small helper or a labelled block. Session::notify_redacted takes error: bool while notice_redacted takes a Severity, which is an inconsistent API. The Redacted path also adds a second way to notify.

AGENTS.md: Compliant as far as I could tell. The new non-test code has no unwrap, expect or panic. Labels are wrapped in tl!. Report, pane and CLI-facing words are English by design, as the comments state. No dependencies or assets were added. The documented behaviours (410 omitted for tiles, one note per server with a 64-server cap, the Network filter including overflow notes, UTC timestamps, and newest-first in the pane) match the code.

Nitpick Cover the MBTiles path in the failed-local-read diagnostics test.

2031-2032: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cover the MBTiles path in the failed-local-read diagnostics test.

network_diagnostics_skip_failed_local_reads reads only a local-file: address. fetch_answer also classifies mbtiles: addresses as local and calls read_local for them directly. If the MBTiles term were removed from that classification, a failed archive read would reach the diagnostics recorder and create a network record. This test would still pass. Add a failing mbtiles: address to the test. Use an archive in a missing directory so that opening it fails without creating a file.

🧪 Suggested test addition
         native::get(&native::agent(), "local-file:/nonexistent-1155.pmtiles", &[]).unwrap_err();
+        native::get(&native::agent(), "mbtiles:0/0/0@/nonexistent-1155-dir/a.mbtiles", &[]).unwrap_err();
         assert!(history.records().is_empty(), "{:?}", history.records());

Nitpick Add a wasm test for the fetchbytes recording path.

724-724: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Add a wasm test for the fetch_bytes recording path.

fetch_bytes sends every error from its request block to diagnostics.record at apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs:724. A rejected fetch and an HTTP 503 response both reach that call as Err values. No test exercises either path. The apps/rustgis-web crate has #[test] items only in embed.rs. Neither apps nor crates references wasm_bindgen_test or wasm-bindgen-test, and apps/rustgis-web declares no dev-dependencies. A change that returns Err without calling record would still compile for wasm32-unknown-unknown.

A wasm-bindgen-test case could stub window.fetch to reject, and a second case could return HTTP 503. Each case would assert that the diagnostics history holds the expected entry. That assertion would catch a bypass of record. The change needs a new wasm-bindgen-test dev-dependency and a wasm test runner, neither of which the crate configures. The added effort is high, and the benefit covers working behavior.

Add wasm tests for the fetch_bytes error paths, covering both a rejected request

and runner for the crate so these tests can execute.

Review items without a thread, at f4cd869:

  • mbtiles case in the local-read test (CodeRabbit): skipped, an extra case for a branch that works; the local-file: case already fails without the exception.
  • wasm test for fetch_bytes (CodeRabbit): out of scope here; it needs a new wasm-bindgen-test dev-dependency and a test runner, and CONTRIBUTING asks to coordinate new dependencies first.
  • Short Basic tokens no longer redacted (claude-review): a deliberate trade-off, agreed on feat(ui): add session-local diagnostics history #1181 and documented in the code.
  • Docstring coverage pre-merge check (CodeRabbit): skipped. The repository sets no docstring threshold (no .coderabbit.yaml; AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md have none). Functions in this diff without a doc comment: Redacted::new, as_str, into_string, truncated, notice_redacted, and secret_name (undocumented before this PR). Their names say what they do.
  • Closure-call style and notify_redacted's bool parameter (claude-review): left for the release quality pass; notify_redacted mirrors notify.

Low confidence (about 35%), hostile input only. The 2 KiB prefix is cut before the authority ends when the userinfo alone is longer than 2 KiB, e.g. https://<2100 chars of user>:x@host/.... The prefix then fails to parse (no host, or an invalid port), so unwrap_or_default() gives the empty key. Two such servers share that key, and the second gets no absence note. This is the case the resolved thread on this line was about, narrowed to the new cut-off. A fix would be to take the origin from the prefix only when it parses, or to note an unparseable origin under its own key, such as the whole address's scheme and length.

Leaving this for the release quality pass: it needs more than 2 KiB of user info, which only hostile input has, and the cost is one missing informational note; real failures are still recorded and no user info reaches a record (reviewed at cbfd5c2).

Security, low severity (confident about the behaviour; the trade-off is the maintainers' call). This narrows redaction compared with the base. Before, a line-initial Basic <word> was redacted when the word had any capital after its first letter. Now a word under 8 characters with no digit or padding is kept. An unpadded 3-byte base64 credential therefore survives at the start of a line: Basic YTpi (a:b) is not redacted. Real credentials of 8+ base64 characters are still caught. The code comment states the trade-off, but docs/privacy.md doesn't. Suggest a sentence there about short Basic values, or a test that pins Basic YTpi as kept so the choice stays deliberate.

Fixed in cbfd5c2: docs/privacy.md now states when the text after a line-initial Basic is removed, and that a very short credential such as YTpi is kept.

Code review

Bugs

  • Low confidence (~35%): note_absence derives the server key from only the first 2 KiB of the address. If the userinfo alone is longer than 2 KiB, the prefix fails to parse and the key becomes "". Two such servers then share a key and the second gets no absence note. Hostile input only. Inline comment posted on crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:293.

Security

  • Low severity, high confidence on the behaviour: a line-initial Basic <word> used to be redacted when the word had any capital after its first letter. Now a word under 8 characters with no digit or padding is kept, so an unpadded 3-byte base64 credential (Basic YTpi, which is a:b) survives. Real 8+ character credentials are still caught. The code comment states the trade-off, but docs/privacy.md doesn't. Inline comment posted on crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:622.
  • The mid-line rule that keeps multi-word values after name: predates this PR. This PR only documents it, so I did not raise it.

Performance

  • None found. note_absence now parses at most 2 KiB, which is cheaper than the old unbounded parse.

Quality

  • Nit, high confidence: docs/user-guide/index.md says the copied report uses "a UTC clock time". The pane and report both print a UTC date and time (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS UTC). Grouped here rather than as an inline comment.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Added non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic, indexing or eprintln. The cfg gating of the new code is consistent with the wasm build. Pane source labels go through tl!. The English-only report labels live in the data layer, which has no translation hook.
  • I verified by reading, not by building or running the tests.

Prior review threads

  • 2 threads on this PR. I left 1 alone: the removed reopened-session test, which the author answered. The oversized-origin thread was fixed; its residual edge above is a new concern on the changed code, not a re-post.

UTC clock-time wording in the user guide (claude-review): fixed in 1547559, now "a UTC date and time".

Low-medium confidence (about 60%), not run. The sentence-colon restoration covers only a trailing :. A bare-host address with user info followed by . or , still gets its punctuation folded into the host: Could not reach https://alice:hidden@example.org, retrying should come out as https://example.org/, retrying, but I expect https://example.org,/ retrying, since the address token runs to whitespace and url accepts , and a trailing . in a host. The new test removing_user_information_keeps_the_sentence_punctuation covers :, a path ending and ), but not this case. Suggest adding that case to the test. If it fails, strip sentence punctuation from the token before parsing and append it again after the URL.

Fixed in 47e863d: sentence punctuation after an address with user info (. , ; : )) is set aside before parsing and put back after; the test covers , and ..

Code review

I could not run the tests, clippy or the wasm build here, so the findings below are from reading the diff and the surrounding source.

Bugs

  • Sentence punctuation after a bare host with user info (crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:724, about 60%). The colon restoration handles only a trailing :. For … https://alice:hidden@example.org, retrying I expect https://example.org,/, because the . or , ends up in the host. The new test covers :, a path ending and ), but not this case. Posted inline with a suggested test.

Security

  • Mid-line multi-word credential values are kept (about 80% that this is the intended trade-off; pre-existing, not changed by the diff). password: correct horse battery keeps all three words. The diff does not touch that logic and the docs now state it. Worth a conscious sign-off, since passphrases can leak into copied reports.

Performance

  • Nothing material. Parsing is bounded to 2 KiB, eviction's retain is over at most 64 entries, and the per-header redact runs only on failures.

Quality (left for the release quality pass)

  • The Severity::label() and NetworkKind::label() doc comments say the pane uses them. The pane uses its own tl! literals (diagnosticlog.rs:76–100), so the English words now live in two places and can drift.

AGENTS.md

  • The UI change in diagnosticlog.rs is not rendered. In English nothing changes, which is probably fine, but AGENTS asks for a render for visible UI changes.
  • No other violations found: no unwrap/expect/unsafe in the new code, Redacted is a sound type-level guard, and the absence-note and report changes are tested both ways.

Earlier review threads

I left 4 earlier concerns alone, because none had new evidence or changed code:

  • the removed reopened-session assertion in tests.rs (answered by the author; the saved-project assertion is restored);
  • the empty-key sharing for over-2-KiB userinfo in diagnostics.rs:293 (deferred by the author; my reading suggests the prefix often parses to a long host, so the impact may be smaller than stated);
  • the Basic short-credential narrowing (diagnostics.rs:622, fixed in the docs);
  • the oversized-origin key (diagnostics.rs:291, resolved).

Change size

Compared with main (merge base 75b52af to PR head cbfd5c2).

Removing user information re-parses the address; a trailing , . ; : or )
joined the host (https://example.org,/). It is set aside before parsing and
put back after. The label doc comments name the copied report only.

At 9de89f7 (claude-review's review):

  • Mid-line multi-word values: unchanged behaviour from before this PR, now documented.
  • Label doc comments: fixed in 47e863d (they name the copied report only).
  • UI render: not done; nothing changes in English, as the PR body says.

Code review

I read the full diff against the base-branch AGENTS.md and the prior threads, and checked the code the diff depends on. That covered the redaction rules and their tests, absence-note bookkeeping in store, clear and note_absence, the request-wrapper refactor in cache.rs and web.rs, the Failure::new, tl! and notify signatures the new code calls, and the docs' claims about pane order, copy order and limits. I found nothing confirmed as a bug, so I posted no inline comments. The remaining points are nits, grouped below.

Bugs

  • None found. I traced the absence-note eviction (store frees a server's note when its record leaves the history), the oversized-address key, the punctuation handling in the URL branch, and the Basic rule against their tests. All hold. Confidence: high.

Security

  • Redaction is narrower in two places: a line-initial Basic with a short base64 value (e.g. Basic YTpi) and a multi-word name: value mid-line are now kept. Both are deliberate and stated in docs/privacy.md. The short-Basic case was already raised and answered. Confidence: high that these are documented trade-offs, not new leaks.

Performance

  • None material. Header lines are redacted one at a time, and the failure text is redacted again later. Redaction is idempotent, and the cost is small. Confidence: high.

Quality

Nits for the release quality pass, not posted inline:

  • crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs (~line 719): the comment "the note below puts it back" points about 30 lines down. Naming the branch would help. Confidence: high.
  • crates/engine/src/cmd/zarr.rs (~line 106): the rewritten comment reads awkwardly ("isn't recorded one by one (one note per server says the omission, and …"). Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md

  • The Diagnostics pane's source labels are now translated, but the PR says "Not rendered". AGENTS.md asks for screenshots of visible changes. This one shows only in non-English locales, so the impact is small. Confidence: low to medium.
  • Otherwise the change follows the base-branch rules: interface strings use tl!, there are no new unwraps or unsafe, layering is untouched, and the docs and tests are updated.

Earlier threads: I left 6 alone. Five were answered, fixed, resolved or outdated, and the current code handles them. The sixth, the origin key for userinfo over 2 KiB, was deferred by the maintainer and still applies, so I did not re-raise it.

deniial00 added a commit to deniial00/RustGIS that referenced this pull request Nov 3, 2026
Brings in opengeos#1333 (request failures recorded one way, credential-header
fix) and opengeos#1294 (every sprite of a style). 20 blocks in web.rs, lib.rs,
tiles cache.rs, source.rs and sprite.rs, each combined:

- cache.rs / web.rs: main's single `diagnostics.record` shape, with
this branch's login handling inside it (origin check, inherit/apply,
same-origin redirect gate, browser requests with a login never
redirected, final check, scrubbed errors). `RequestDiagnostics::failed`
keeps recording the plain address and scrubbed text.
- lib.rs: main's `notify_redacted` is fed `Session::redacted`, which
scrubs logins before redacting (the UI's caller too), so a notice
  never bypasses the scrub.
- sprite.rs / source.rs: main's every-sprite loading, each sprite's
address checked before a cached sheet is served; sprites at the
style's origin inherit its login, others are read without it (test
  every_sprite_at_the_styles_origin_inherits_its_login).
