feat(connections): log in to web services with basic auth or an API-key header, for the session - #1223
A WMS, WFS, OGC API or other web service behind HTTP Basic auth or an API key can't be used today: a saved connection has nowhere to keep a login, so the only option is a token pasted into the address, which is removed when the project is saved (#699).
This is step 1 of Part B of #757, as split in this comment: session-only logins.
Login methods: a saved WMS, WMTS, WFS, WCS, OGC API, ArcGIS REST, CSW or STAC connection can log in with none, Basic authentication (user name and password) or an API key in a header (header name and key). The connection keeps only the method, the user name and the header name. The password or key is given to connection.login and lasts for the session; connection.logout ends it. "remember": true is refused for web services.
Sent only to the connection's origin: each login gets an unguessable binding owned by its session and connection. The tile cache adds the credential only to requests at that exact scheme, host and port: capabilities, listings, tiles, feature pages, STAC, CSW, ArcGIS REST and refreshes. A redirect to another origin continues without it. Authenticated responses are cached per binding and dropped when the login ends or is replaced. In the browser such requests use redirect: error, no referrer and no browser credentials.
Plain http://: the login is sent unencrypted only after confirmation: "allowInsecure": true, or the dialog's checkbox.
Projects: a layer added from a service connection records the connection's id. Opening a project without that connection, or without its login, asks through the existing login-request queue (connection, password or choose) instead of failing silently. When several saved connections at an address have a login, RustGIS asks which one to use and never picks one itself; public connections alone don't ask.
Secrets: never in preferences, projects, History, workspace recordings, what the assistant sees, or error messages. Plugins can't send a saved web-service login.
Coordinate first (CONTRIBUTING.md): this changes the .rgis format and existing commands' parameters, additively.
Layer and TileLayer gain an optional "connection" (a saved connection's id, never a secret), left out when empty. Older projects open unchanged.
connection.new / connection.edit / connection.test take auth (none|basic|header), user and keyName. connection.login takes apiKey and allowInsecure. service.add, service.import, the STAC commands, layer.addUrl, layer.addDownload and map.addTiles take connection. New command: connection.logout.
Not in this PR:
Remembering logins on this computer (step 2).
API keys in the query (parked).
Changes to ArcGIS sign-in or Earthdata.
Moving pasted address tokens into a connection (Part C).
Logins for remote files that GDAL and DuckDB fetch themselves.
cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passes. Locally this needed AR_wasm32_unknown_unknown set to LLVM's llvm-ar, because Apple's ranlib can't index the zstd wasm objects; no repo configuration changed.
New tests cover:
origin scoping (another host, port or scheme);
redirects to another origin, including one that is itself logged in;
the plain-http:// confirmation;
isolation between simultaneous sessions and between connections, including another session's binding given in a legend or layer.addDownload address;
a project opened without its connection, then without its login, and with a recorded connection that no longer exists;
several connections never picked silently, and public ones never asking;
the tile cache dropped only when a login ends or is replaced;
junk parameters (hostile_params_never_panic).
By hand, rustgis-cli against two local HTTP servers that log request headers:
a plain-http:// login without allowInsecure was refused and sent nothing;
the API key went to the connection's origin, and not to another port, another host name for the same server, or the target of a cross-origin redirect;
the Basic header matched base64(user:password);
the saved project held no secret and recorded the connection;
reopening it asked for the connection, then for the login;
two public connections on one host let a bare add go through without asking.
Reviewed with review-loop: 5 rounds in two loops (3 before the PR, 2 after the bot reviews and the merges with main), 8 findings fixed, 0 declined; 7 quality points are left for the release quality pass. Before the first loop, a separate full review's findings were fixed, with one sub-point declined: there's no owner check inside the fetch path, because every entry point re-binds the address and binding tokens are unguessable.
UI evidence
The connection dialog gets a Login section. Before, a new WMS connection on main:
After: basic authentication (the password is masked; the dialog says web-service logins last for this session):
After: an API key in a header on a plain http:// address, with the unencrypted-send confirmation:
New: opening a project whose layer records a connection that isn't saved on this computer asks for it, instead of failing silently:
New: when several saved connections with logins match an address, the user picks one for the session:
New: a web-service connection's menu in Data Sources has Log In… (and Log Out once logged in); layers and the Connections tree get the same entries:
Added session-only Basic password and API-key logins for supported web-service connections, with login/logout controls and connection selection.
Service requests and layers retain their associated connection, including during imports and deferred downloads. Same-origin links can use that connection; other origins remain anonymous.
Plain-HTTP logins require confirmation.
Bug Fixes
Revoked or replaced logins can no longer be used for requests, and authenticated requests reject redirects.
Improved protection against credentials appearing in errors, assistant results, and exported project data.
Documentation
Updated the user guide with login behavior, project connection details, and assistant result limits.
This pull request adds session-only Basic and API-key-header authentication for saved web-service connections. It binds requests to canonical origins, carries connection IDs through service and layer flows, validates bindings during fetches and cache operations, and removes runtime bindings and secrets from saved or user-visible output.

Web-service logins work as described, with several narrow edge cases left. Some layers may need a project reopen after login, and a plugin-added child layer could be read with the group login during a whole-group refresh. These are limited in scope and mostly self-correcting, so they can be handled in follow-up work.

Explanation
The title "feat(connections): log in to web services with basic auth or an API-key header, for the session" matches the main change. The raw summary shows connections gaining auth fields (none, basic, header), session-only login commands (connection.login and connection.logout), and per-origin credential binding. The title is specific, follows a conventional-commit style, and names the primary feature. It is 95 characters, slightly longer than ideal, but still concise and readable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's sections: Summary, Testing, UI evidence, and Related issue. The Summary explains the problem, the session-only login approach, the origin-bound credential handling, the plain-HTTP confirmation, project recording of connection IDs, and secret handling. The Testing section lists the CI commands, the wasm build, the new test coverage, and manual verification steps. The UI evidence section includes before and after screenshots for the connection dialog and the new prompts. The Related issue section links to #757. The template's required UI evidence section is filled. The Related issue section says 'Part of #757' and does not include a 'Closes' line, which is acceptable for a partial step. The description is thorough and complete, with only minor scope notes beyond the template.

A project layer that records a connection not saved on this computer is silently re-pointed at the origin's only saved connection, and that connection's session login is sent with no prompt. The PR and data.md say this case asks. Confidence ~75%. Inline: service_logins.rs:461.
An unsaved, anonymous Test at an origin with one logged-in saved connection binds that connection's login into the probe URL. The app then downloads it. Confidence ~55%. Inline: connections.rs:926, with a one-line suggestion.
Security
logins::apply/check never verify the owning session. owner() is unused, and binding tokens are a sequential counter. Ownership is enforced only in service_logins::request(). I found no reachable bypass, so this is defence in depth. Confidence ~60%. Inline: tiles/src/logins.rs:200.
The PR description's "known limitation" says every request to the origin carries an active login from any session. The code doesn't do that: bare URLs get nothing. Either the description is stale or I misread the code; please reconcile it.
Performance
activate and deactivate clear the whole process tile cache on every login or logout, including other origins' tiles. Confidence ~60%. Inline: service_logins.rs:156.
Quality (nits, no inline comments)
named() in service_logins.rs rejects "connection": "", but request_params treats blank as absent. So service.add errors where service.layers accepts it.
tag() records a named connection on layers with a local path. This is harmless but odd.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code that I could see; the added ones sit in test modules.
New user-visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt, and engine errors go through translated.
Missing tests: the recorded-but-missing connection with one candidate, the unsaved anonymous probe, and cross-session use of a binding.

This is where the PR description's "known limitation" is contradicted. The description says "while a login is active, every request the process makes to that origin carries it". apply returns None for any address that isn't an explicit wrapper, and the test web_login_goes_only_to_its_connections_origin asserts that a bare URL never gets the header. Either the description is stale, or the code does something I haven't found. Please correct one or the other, since the description asks reviewers to accept that limitation.

Fixed: the PR description was rewritten for this diff and no longer has that 'known limitation' paragraph. Logins are per-session, per-connection bindings, and bare addresses get no login. (reviewed at 954ea7c)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Quality (nit): the message promises "letters, digits or -_." but valid_header_name also accepts !#$%&'*+.^|~, and it rejects Sec-*` names, which the message doesn't mention. Make the message match the validator.
Verdict: not ready to merge. The main problems are a plugin path to saved logins, a regression in connection.test for non-web connections, and a PR description that contradicts the code. I read the whole diff and checked the key claims against the head tree. I did not run the test suite.
Bugs
connection.test regression, non-web kinds (medium, high confidence on the behaviour).tested() in crates/engine/src/cmd/connections.rs:871 now compares kind/address/auth/user/keyName for every connection, not just web services. Saved postgres, mysql, sqlserver and S3 connections tested by id now fail on any mismatch or null. Before, these fields were ignored. Suggested fix is in the inline comment.
Security
Plugins can use a saved login (medium-high, high confidence).NETWORK commands such as layer.addUrl, service.layers, service.add and map.addTiles accept a connection id, and request_params attaches that login to any URL on its origin. The plugin deny-list blocks connection.browse/test/login but not this parameter, so a plugin with network permission can read authenticated resources. Inline comment on plugins.rs:286.
Guessable binding IDs (low-medium, medium confidence). Bindings are a sequential counter (logins.rs:120), and apply/check don't check the owning session. I found no current path that skips the owner check in request()/request_params. It is defence in depth, so the fix is a random binding or an owner check in apply.
Quality
PR description contradicts the code (medium-high). The "known limitation" says every request to an origin carries the login while one is active. apply (logins.rs:200) only honours explicit wrappers, and a test asserts that bare URLs never get the header. Either the description is stale or the code differs. The description also promises a new CHANGELOG.md and updates to docs/cli.md and docs/python.md. None of those files are in the diff, and the repo deliberately dropped its CHANGELOG.
Error message doesn't match the validator (nit, high confidence).connections.rs:166 lists the allowed characters incorrectly.
AGENTS.md
Never crash (low).connectiontree.rs:271 uses params["connection"] = …, which panics if add.params isn't an object. The engine builds these objects today.
Never silent (low).project.rs:110 maps a malformed wrapper to "", so a layer's address is emptied on open with no notice.
Test coverage (medium, high confidence).stac.rs:1089 is #[cfg(all(test, target_arch = "wasm32"))]. CI runs cargo test --workspace natively and only builds the wasm target, so this deferred-download provenance test never runs.
Performance (low).service_logins.rs:156 clears the whole tile cache on every login, logout and forget, including other origins' basemaps.

GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
A login is carried by an unguessable per-session, per-connection binding inside the request address and applied by the tile cache only at the connection's exact origin (scheme, host and port). A redirect to another origin drops it; authenticated responses are cached per binding. The web app fetches such requests with redirect: error, no referrer and no browser credentials.
Saved WMS, WMTS, WFS, WCS, OGC API, ArcGIS REST, CSW and STAC connections can log in with HTTP Basic or an API key in a header. The connection keeps only the method, user and header name; the secret lasts for the session. connection.login takes password/apiKey and allowInsecure for plain http://; connection.logout ends it. Layers record their connection id in the project and ask for a missing connection or login instead of picking one silently.
…in again keeps the binding
Several saved connections at one origin ask which to use only when one of them has a login: public ones all read the same anonymously. A blank connection.login on a connection already logged in chooses it again without minting a new binding, so its layers and cached tiles stay. The web app no longer suppresses ArcGIS tokens on login requests (ArcGIS is out of scope; native was already reverted).

feat: logins for web-service connections (Part B of #757)
feat(connections): log in to web services with basic auth or an API-key header, for the session
Nov 2, 2026
cache::clear() drops every cached document and PMTiles header, and tests running at once call it (logins::deactivate among them). The derived-style test now stores its documents again until the style resolves, and the vector-tile pick test waits for its archive to be read again, as its earlier pick already did. Fixes the test / Test (ubuntu-latest) failure in draw::tests::picks_the_vector_tile_features_under_a_point.
Coverage is partial. I read the prior review threads in full and the first ~1,300 lines of the 5,676-line diff, which include the browser fetch path, the assistant boundary, the new login_address and tiles/logins.rs modules (first 330 of 510 lines), the OGC/remote-file changes, and most of the connection commands. I also grepped the added lines for unwrap, expect, panic!, eprintln! and unsafe; the hits are all in tests. I did not read the rest of service_logins.rs, tiles/src/cache.rs, project.rs, the egui UI changes, or the remaining tests, so this review does not clear them.
Bugs: No new defects found in the parts reviewed.
Security: No new issues found in the parts reviewed. The insecure flag on the reuse path in cmd/connections.rs (web::activate(s, c, Some(&secret), true)) was already raised in an earlier thread, and the author added a comment at the call site. I did not re-raise it.
Performance: Nothing new. Cache-wide clearing on login changes is already raised.
Quality (low confidence, not posted):crates/engine/src/connection_browse.rspublic_addresses leaves a rustgis-login: string unchanged when login_address::parse rejects it. A malformed wrapper could therefore reach browse output unchanged. The assistant boundary scrubs it, so the impact looks small. About 25% confidence.
AGENTS.md: Nothing new found in the parts reviewed. The rustgis-login: scrub at the assistant boundary, the scrub in history and exports, and the wasm redirect: error handling follow the "never silent" and "never break wasm" rules as far as I read.
I left about 48 earlier review threads alone because they already raise these concerns. Most are resolved or answered, and I did not repeat any of them. I posted no inline comments.
Change size
Compared with the base branch (merge base 9eed66e to PR head 1301b79). The PR changes 60 files: 5 added, 55 modified, 0 removed, 0 renamed.
Brings in main's 8 commits. One block, in tiles cache.rs `post_with`:
main's opengeos#1282 moved "an error status is answered" onto the shared agent
config (a request's own settings would set TLS up again and re-read the
system's certificates), so this branch's login-carrying POST keeps its
origin check, S3 refusal, inherit/apply and login header, and sends
without a per-request config. No other request here sets one, and the
branch builds no agents of its own, so every login request uses main's
system certificate trust.
…bind
A plain legend a plugin set on a layer recording a connection with a
login was bound at that connection's next login (`rebind_connection`
rewrites every legend of its layers), so the plugin picked a path the
user's login was then sent to. `map.setTiles` now refuses, while reads
are anonymous, a legend at the origin of such a connection; one at
another origin, or for a connection without a login, is still taken and
stays plain. docs: fetch_bytes's comment re-wrapped.
I read the new core (login_address.rs, tiles/src/logins.rs, engine/src/service_logins.rs), the command layer, the assistant boundary, the plugin boundary, the cache redirect paths, and the data-layer remote revocation. I checked the non-test added lines for unwrap/expect/panic!; they appear only in test code.
Bugs: None new at high confidence. I traced the main credential paths and they hold: origin-scoped binding, session-scoped wrapper checks, cross-origin redirects dropping the header, plugin requests stripped to plain addresses (including legend URLs via legends() → request(None)), and error and notice scrubbing.
Security: None new. Plugin wrappers are stripped before bind_logged_in, so a plugin can't reuse a wrapper it reads from output. The browser-token and redirect concerns were already raised.
Performance: None new that matters. scrub and check return early for plain addresses.
Quality:
Never-silent, low (~40%): rebind_connection (crates/engine/src/service_logins.rs:418) and login_address::inherit (crates/data/src/login_address.rs:121) fall back to the plain address when binding fails. That silently drops a login for an address with whitespace, a control character or a backslash, while request() and bind_logged_in return an error. Inline comment posted.
Nits, left for the release quality pass: named() uses an ad-hoc message where NO_SUCH_CONNECTION is used in request(). The request_params error "connection is a saved web-service connection id." reads as a statement, not an error. In the data-crate test, set_validator is a first-wins OnceLock that ignores a second install, so the revocation test depends on test order (low, ~30%).
AGENTS.md: No violations found in the non-test code. The never-crash and never-silent rules are otherwise followed; the rebind_connection fallback above is the one exception.
Earlier concerns: I left the 53 existing threads alone. The stale-selection thread at service_logins.rs:317 is still unanswered and the code is unchanged, so I did not re-post it.

Cover linked-document and offer requests in the refresh test.
The refresh test checks the capabilities request binding and the stored task.connection. It never runs a linked-document or feature-offer request. A change that routes Import::discover or Import::next through another connection would still pass. Drive one linked document or offer through landed, then assert the login bound to that request.

Never silent (low, ~30%): a login-bound address on a signed S3 endpoint loses its login without a notice.
prepared.signed is true for an S3 endpoint's request, and then login is None. A wrapper that reaches that branch was bound to a logged-in web-service connection at the same origin. Its login is dropped, and the request goes out with only the S3 signature. Nothing says so. The desktop path (cache.rs, fetch_answer, if !prepared.signed && same_origin) does the same.
The overlap is unlikely: an S3 connection and a web-service connection would have to share an origin. The branch should still either refuse the bound address or record a notice, since the login the user gave is ignored. A test with a service connection on an S3 endpoint's origin would show which.
I reviewed the full diff (61 files) against AGENTS.md and the prior review threads. Most of the core logic holds up on reading: origin canonicalisation, binding validation, scrub, without_recorded_login_bindings, the same-origin redirect handling in the native fetcher (the agent uses max_redirects(0), so POST doesn't follow redirects), and the login command's count reporting through resolve_origins. I found one new, low-confidence item and posted it inline. I did not read every ui-egui and command-test hunk line by line, so coverage there is lighter.
Bugs
None new at medium or higher confidence.
Security
None new at medium or higher confidence. Plugin, cross-origin and session-scoping paths look consistent with the PR text.
Performance
None new. The per-login cache clear and the whole-cache eviction are already raised.
Quality
Low (~30%): a login-bound address on a signed S3 endpoint loses its login with no notice (apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs:603; the native path in cache.rs does the same). Posted inline. The overlap is unlikely.
AGENTS.md
No new violations found in the changed lines. Non-test unwrap/expect isn't present in the new service_logins.rs or tiles/logins.rs code. Tests carry allow(clippy::unwrap_used).
Already raised, left alone: 56 prior threads cover this PR. I did not re-post any. Two of them still match the current code, so the authors should see them when they respond:
A stale session choice makes a single login-required connection read anonymously. request() (service_logins.rs, around line 4163) still falls through to plain, while resolve() falls back to the sole candidate.
Deferred items: the one-call cached-style race, the per-request redaction snapshot after logout, and browser binding tokens that aren't unpredictable.

Stop document-supplied addresses from carrying a rustgis-login: wrapper.
is_web now checks login_address::inner(url). A raw rustgis-login:… string therefore passes as a web address. Several callers apply is_web directly to an href from the service's document, without resolve:
WMS GetMap OnlineResource (Line 834)
WMTS KVP Get (Line 1312)
WMTS ResourceURL templates (Line 1418)
WFS GetFeature (Line 1518)
WCS GetCoverage (Line 1695)
resolve strips wrappers. The paths in this list skip resolve, so a document's wrapper reaches with_query, and with_query keeps that wrapper's binding through inherit. Before this change, is_web refused these values.
A capabilities document from origin B can name a bound address for origin A. If its binding is one of this session's, request() accepts it unchanged. The binding is hard to guess, so this is not exploitable by itself. It still breaks the rule that only RustGIS sets where a login goes.
Refuse wrappers at the document boundary:
Proposed fix
fn is_web(url: &str) -> bool {
let url = crate::login_address::inner(url);
let l = url.get(..8).unwrap_or(url).to_ascii_lowercase();
l.starts_with("http://") || l.starts_with("https://")
}

Then use .filter(|h| is_document_web(h)) at Line 834, Line 1312, Line 1418, Line 1518 and Line 1695. Alternatively, pass those hrefs through resolve(url, &h).

opengeos#1223 marks a plugin's download "anonymous" where request_url queues it, so no saved login goes
with it. This branch keeps what was asked to answer the command when it runs again, so the mark
has to be in both sides of that comparison, or the rerun asks again and downloads again, up to its
limit: Session::asked_for gives both the same form. asked_by compares the two keys the front end
now passes on, "anonymous" and "connection", so a number lands only the read it was given for.
opengeos#1426 uses the test plugin name "ui-late" too, and tests run at once: this branch's is renamed.

…e series draws its table, and the browser export says what to do
CodeRabbit's review of the merge of main:
- `cog_tiles_to_rasters` copies the tile layer's `connection` and `anonymous` onto the raster layer it
becomes, so a project reopened reads it through the connection it recorded (opengeos#1223) rather than asking
to choose among those matching its origin.
- `Info::palette` reads `layout.palette`, the table the header keeps apart from its colour hint since the
window read (opengeos#1204): the tiles of a palette file's own look are coloured by it, as `paint` always could.
`with_stretch` answers that look without a read and without keeping a stretch (a look of its bands
would take it for its own). The notice for a dated series or a cube no longer says its tiles are grey.
- The browser exporter's error, and both guides, say the export asked for the tiles still missing and to
export again once they are in: a map draw doesn't read what the export needs beyond the view.
- The two tile-cache tests that arm or clear the process-wide alarm hold a test-only lock.
Tests: `a_palette_images_own_look_has_its_table`; `cog_tile_layers_of_older_projects_open_as_rasters` checks
the connection and anonymity carried.

#1339)
* feat(raster): cloud-optimised GeoTIFFs are raster layers read in place
A COG holds what a GeoTIFF file holds, so it is now a raster layer like one: the
same Symbology pane, raster commands, legend, identify and tools, with no
COG-only dialogs or menus. The layer keeps an overview of every band (about two
million values) for statistics and tools; zoomed in past it, the map reads the
part in view from the level the view needs as it draws, styled with the
overview's statistics so the image looks the same at every zoom.
- Every band is read whatever the PhotometricInterpretation tag says (palette,
RGB with extra bands, alpha), and that tag sets the first look: RGB in colour,
a palette as a colormap, MinIsBlack in grey on band 1 or as RGB with three
bands. GDAL metadata isn't consulted. File rasters follow the same rule.
- The stretch statistics come from a level chosen by tile budget and pixel
count, so images in tall strips no longer stretch over the type's full range.
- Decoded tiles are evicted least recently used, view windows fit the cache,
and missing tiles are filled from levels already decoded until they arrive,
so blocks no longer flicker between overview levels while zooming.
- Dated COG series, data cube files and AlphaEarth embeddings stay tile layers.
Projects that saved a plain COG as a tile layer open it as a raster layer,
keeping its visibility, transparency, blend, order and look.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): address review of COGs read in place; wait for Retry-After on 429 and 503
- Hold the coarsest level as the overview only when it fits half the tile cache in 4,096 tiles;
refuse a larger image without overviews instead of reading it whole.
- Stand-ins fill only the tiles still missing; a tile's own no-data pixels stay empty.
- Keep an address's look (#bands=…&range=…) until the pixels land (browser, migrated projects);
a palette image stretched by a range is drawn in grey.
- Read a project's and a GeoLibre import's in-place overviews together, once each; migrate COG
tile layers before the tile list is cut.
- GeoTIFF files read every band, as COGs do; a palette image without its colour table says so.
- Scale alpha by its pixel type in both drawing paths; blend a see-through layer once while its
tiles load; read a wrapped 0–360° view's full width; keep the alpha band when a colour uses it.
- Raster to PMTiles waits for in-place tiles (two minutes at most) or refuses, never writing the
overview in their place.
- A failed read waits a minute, or what its server's Retry-After says on a 429 or 503 (seconds or
an HTTP date, within 1 s to 1 h); the map draws again when the wait is over.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): say a missing colour table when pixels land later; make room for failed tiles
- A palette image without its colour table is said once for its pixels whenever they land (a
project opened, an import, the browser), not only when added with them: the layer remembers
it was said, and the session says it after each command and each frame.
- A full memory of failed tiles drops the one whose wait ends soonest, so a new failure still
waits (Retry-After included) instead of being asked for at every draw.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): second review round of COGs read in place
- Say an in-place layer's statistics and tools read an overview, when added and when its pixels
land later; landing notices list at most five names, and the app gets a frame once pixels land.
- Exports refuse an in-place layer drawn from less than the image (the overview after a read
error, a view too large, stand-ins for tiles that couldn't be read).
- The overview budget counts whole decoded tiles; a full failed-tile memory clears expired waits
before making room.
- The tile path keeps an alpha band drawn as a colour; alpha_max covers 64-bit and half floats.
- A grey image is a palette image only when the whole file is one or it has its ColorMap.
- A path-less in-place layer keeps its error; fetch_bytes has its doc comment back.
- Tests: a GET answering 503 with Retry-After, two converted COG layers keep their order, the
overview notice, and an unreadable in-place layer's export.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): third review round of COGs read in place
- An in-place layer that can't be read says so once (an error notice), wherever it was read.
- Extra-band images are taken for RGB only when the file holds no grey multiband image.
- A layer saved before its pixels landed keeps its pending look and its own-look restyle.
- The overview is drawn under failed tiles too, so they show it rather than holes.
- layer.addUrl on an in-place COG returns overviewOf again; only the file's notice is left out.
- stand_in walks the gap rectangles, allocating nothing per pixel.
- Doc comments back above fetch_bytes and refused; no always-true wide_rgb flag; no layer-0
fallback; no shadowed view width; impossible HTTP dates refused; docs lines rewrapped.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): fourth review round of COGs read in place
- A view read from a coarser level than it needs (too large a part for the tiles kept) is
reported, so exports refuse it; the map still draws it.
- Dated-series keys given as null ask for nothing: the GeoTIFF stays a raster read in place.
- stand_in looks kept tiles up one at a time, never holding the tile cache across the fill.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): fifth review round of COGs read in place
- A view that falls back to the overview when it needs a finer level is refused by exports too.
- The wait read back from an error's text is bounded as when written: no overflow.
- The tile cache evicts through an ordered index, not a scan; a re-kept tile counts once.
- Opening a COG tile layer as a raster layer says which settings (attribution, zoom range,
bounds) a raster layer hasn't, once.
- One in-place wait constant; the address split once; the Details pane named in the docs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): check an in-place address as a tile layer's before reading it
A project edited by hand asks for http(s) or s3 addresses only: `read_together` and `reload`
refuse any other, keeping why on the layer, which is said once the project is open.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): the map says when an in-place layer draws less than the view needs; PNG exports refuse it
- A coarser level than the view needs, or tiles that couldn't be read, reach the app as a tile
error named by the layer, shown once; the map keeps drawing what it has.
- A PNG export (share.exportMap) refuses a raster read in place whose tiles are still on their
way or couldn't be read, as Raster to PMTiles does, instead of writing the overview.
- The window's edges use saturating arithmetic on hostile widths.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): say a dropped overlay flag; refuse partial in-place exports by layer id
- Opening a COG tile layer as a raster layer reports its overlay flag with the other settings
a raster layer hasn't.
- The render output carries the raster layers read in place drawn from less than the view
needs (`partial`, by id), so a PNG export refuses them by id rather than by matching names.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): refuse a PNG export only for an in-place layer's own pending tiles; palette and RGB by image
- The render output carries the in-place layers whose tiles are still on their way, by id;
render_png refuses those alone, so other layers' tiles pending export what has drawn.
- A GeoTIFF's palette and RGB-with-more-bands interpretations are decided per image, from the
image decoded: a tableless palette image beside grey overviews says so; a grey image beside
an RGB one is grey.
- The docs paragraph on layer.addUrl's pending downloads is rewrapped.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): three minor points from review
- The export's idle-wait count resets when a wait brings news, as its doc says.
- A migrated tile layer's opacity is kept exactly, not rounded to a percent.
- A tile's colours are looked up once for its pen.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): a tile's end saturates in assemble; a data cube's file stays a tile layer on reopen
- A level as wide as u32 allows is assembled rather than wrapped to an empty copy.
- "cube": true marks the address (#cube=1), so a data cube's file added without its series
stays a tile layer when its project opens again; look changes keep the marker.
- The engine tests' range server answers each connection on its own thread, so a layer's
tiles asked for together don't hold a fetch worker each while the others wait.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): a view across a 0–360° grid's seam reads the two strips in view, not the whole width
The sample grid's points that wrapped and those that didn't give two runs of columns, each
run to the seam; the part in view is read as a window for each at the same level, so a wide
full-turn grid viewed at 0° no longer reads its full width, nor reports it as too large.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): a turned in-place layer zoomed in past its overview says so, and exports refuse it
- A turned layer draws its overview; zoomed in past it, the map reports it and the PNG and
PMTiles exports refuse, quoting the layer's own reason. The user guide says so.
- An HTTP date's hour, minute and second are parsed unsigned.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): review of the merge with main
- A raster read in place from an S3 bucket a project opens without its connection says so,
once, and is read when the connection binds.
- An address look naming bands the file hasn't is said, with what the pixels lost; the layer
draws in its own look and keeps the look's range.
- A COG tile layer opened as a raster layer takes a numbered name when another layer has its.
- A dead line in the stretch setup and an over-long docs line are gone.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): review of the merge with main, second round
- A two-band `#bands=` look is said; the layer draws the file's own look with the look's range.
- A tile a sparse file leaves out is kept as empty: a window over it is whole at once, and an
export of the view over it is written rather than refused after waiting for it. `Example`
writes such a file.
- A header refused with `Retry-After` (a GeoTIFF's or a PMTiles archive's) asks the map to draw
again when it may be read, on the failure and on each draw while it waits.
- `add_in_place` checks the address as the project path does.
- The bands' statistics are built only when the caller passes none; doc comments and a name
counter tidied; the unchecked-address test asserts the rule named.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(raster): review of the merges with main, third round
A failed overview of a layer read in place is read again once its wait is
over (a minute, or the server's Retry-After), as a tile or the file's header
is: `RasterLayer::read_failure`/`read_again`, `Session::read_in_place_again`
each frame; the read lands as the map draws. A palette image whose address
names bands the file hasn't is drawn in grey with the range, as its tile
layer drew it, and the notice says so. A tile the fetch queue dropped isn't
remembered as failed. Failed tiles are forgotten with `cache::clear` and
`cache::forget`. The Details pane says "Reading in place…" while an overview
is on its way and shows the error when it failed. The migration's doc comment
says it runs on every open. `std::time` → `web_time` in the map crate.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): review of the merges with main, fourth round
A joint read of tiles (a layer's overview) asks for them a batch at a time
and asks again for one the fetch queue dropped, so an overview of more tiles
than the queue holds (a file without overviews, in small tiles) lands rather
than failing. The plain tile cache honours Retry-After: a tile its server
refused saying when to come back has the map drawn again then, on the failure
and from the gate on each draw while it waits. A test pins main's palette
rule for a tableless palette overview under a grey full image. The example
writer can leave overviews out.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): a window asks for its tiles in batches
A window over more tiles than the fetch queue holds (small tiles) asks for
at most 256 missing tiles per draw, the rest at the next, rather than all at
once, which pushed its own first requests out of the queue to be asked for
all again. A tile not asked for yet is pending, as one on its way is.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(engine): the desktop doesn't wait for a read in place, and a failing one waits longer each time
Review findings on the merge with main:
- `Session::in_place_wait` (true by default: the command line, Python and tests wait, so a
result is complete) is false in the desktop binary, whose commands run on the window's own
thread: `layer.addUrl` adds a GeoTIFF read in place at once and its overview lands as the map
draws (`RasterLayer::opening_in_place` begins the read without waiting, `poll_reload` installs
it); a project, an import and a layer file begin their reads together as before and
`Session::wait_in_place_reads` waits only where the session waits.
- Binding an S3 connection reads its in-place rasters together (`reopen_where` calls
`read_together` once), not one after another, each waiting.
- An overview that fails again waits twice as long each time, within the hour
(`cache::backoff`), so a file that never reads isn't asked for every minute all session.
- With no memory for the image that blends the part in view with its overview, the overview is
drawn alone and the draw says so, rather than nothing and Ok.
Tests: a_cog_added_without_waiting_lands_as_the_map_draws,
binding_a_connection_reads_its_in_place_rasters_together (a stand-in bucket that answers only
once both files are asked for), a_read_that_fails_again_waits_longer_each_time, and the
overview retry test now refuses twice.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(tiles): a joint read the queue keeps dropping ends, and one wait bounds every map's reads
Review findings on 767f99a:
- `Session::wait_in_place_reads` waits for every map's in-place reads at once, under one
two-minute deadline, not each map's in turn.
- `fetch_all` counts the tiles the fetch queue dropped and fails past eight a tile (64 at
least), saying so, so the layer reads again later with its backing-off wait rather than asking
without end (the browser has no other end to it). It takes its tile getter now
(`fetch_all_with`), so the test answers "dropped" without the process-wide fetcher.
- The tile index of a hostile header's huge level is computed checked in `chunks_of` and
`assemble`: a tile `u32` can't count is skipped, not wrapped (a debug build panicked).
- A look applied after the pixels' losses were said says its own loss alone, not the header's
again.
Tests: a_read_the_queue_keeps_dropping_ends, a_window_at_the_far_edge_of_a_huge_level_doesnt_overflow
(the far corner too), a_look_applied_after_the_losses_were_said_says_its_own_alone.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(engine): a bind counts a raster read in place as reading until its overview is in
Where the session doesn't wait for reads in place (the desktop, the browser), a saved S3
connection chosen for a project's rasters read in place only starts their overviews reading.
`reopen_where` counted them as opened; now it counts what is in as opened and the rest as
reading, `connection.resolveS3` answers `{id, reopened, failed, reading}`, the chooser's
notice says how many are still being read, and the user guide says so.
Test: a_connection_chosen_without_waiting_counts_its_in_place_rasters_as_reading.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* fix(engine): COG tile layers open as rasters as the project opens only, and a failed read in place isn't started over by a repair
`Project::normalize` ran the migration of plain COG tile layers to raster layers read in place
on every repair, so a tile layer added this session (`map.addTiles`, kind `cog`) was converted,
losing its attribution, zoom range and bounds, when a layer file was added or maps imported. It
runs as a project opens now (`normalize_opened`), and as a map file is imported. The same repair
started the reads of the layers not read yet, a failed one among them, which skipped its wait
and reset its failure count: a layer with a read failure is left to
`Session::read_in_place_again`. A raster turned by a hair either side of none isn't turned
(render). The chooser's count reads with one as with many.
Tests: a_cog_tile_layer_added_this_session_stays_one_until_the_project_opens_again,
a_hair_of_rotation_either_way_isnt_a_turn (render); the overview retry test adds a layer file
after the first failure.

* fix(engine): a session that doesn't draw reads a failed overview again, and a read that couldn't start isn't started over
- `Session::run` reads a failed in-place overview again after each command once its wait is over (the app
did so each frame only), waiting for it where the session waits for reads in place: a long-lived Python
session no longer keeps a failed layer failed. `read_in_place_again` says whether it started one.
- A repair of the project (a layer file added, maps imported) leaves a layer whose read couldn't start as it
is, said once, as it left a timed failure: `read_in_place` skips any layer carrying an error.
- A GeoTIFF added in place before its overview is in answers its size from the header (the level it will
hold, its bands, the full size) and `"reading": true`; before the header is in (the browser), `null`, not 0.
- A band number past the last `usize` (a project file's) is printed, not overflowed: `look_lost`, a window's
band check, `Look::suffix` and `map.setTiles`'s check use `saturating_add`.
Tests: `a_waiting_sessions_next_command_reads_a_failed_overview_again`,
`a_read_in_place_that_couldnt_start_isnt_started_over_by_a_repair`,
`a_cog_added_before_its_header_is_in_says_it_is_being_read`, `a_look_asking_for_the_band_past_the_last_usize_is_said`,
`a_window_of_the_band_past_the_last_usize_is_refused`; `a_cog_added_without_waiting_lands_as_the_map_draws` checks
the answer's size.

* fix(engine): a migrated COG tile layer keeps its connection, a palette series draws its table, and the browser export says what to do
CodeRabbit's review of the merge of main:
- `cog_tiles_to_rasters` copies the tile layer's `connection` and `anonymous` onto the raster layer it
becomes, so a project reopened reads it through the connection it recorded (#1223) rather than asking
to choose among those matching its origin.
- `Info::palette` reads `layout.palette`, the table the header keeps apart from its colour hint since the
window read (#1204): the tiles of a palette file's own look are coloured by it, as `paint` always could.

* fix(tiles, engine): every wait asked for has the map drawn again, a draw before it asks again, and a project an older RustGIS saved again reads its COG in place
- The tile cache keeps every wait asked for (the earliest 1,024), not the earliest alone: the draw when an earlier wait is over may not revisit a later read's gate (a style kept whole while its elevation source waits). `generation()` takes out every wait that is over at once and asks the app again for the earliest left on each draw, since egui's `request_repaint_after` lasts one frame and a draw before the deadline used it up. Tests for both; the tile test takes the cache's turn too.
- The engine's header retry test asserts what the session sees (the add fails saying when to ask again, nothing is sent for the refusal, and a draw once the wait is over reads the header again, answered), with no alarm hook installed; that no read starts while the wait lasts, and that the alarm is armed, is checked in the tiles crate, where the gate's state and the alarm are read under the cache's turn and the alarm tests' turn.
- A project an older RustGIS saved again (it didn't know `in_place`: it showed the layer as missing and saved it without the key) reads its cloud-optimised GeoTIFF in place again: a raster layer whose path is a plain web address, from no saved connection, is read no other way.
- The COG tile-layer migration says a legend is dropped, with the attribution, bounds, overlay and zoom range.
- A login made again reads a raster layer read in place again without waiting for it where the session doesn't wait (the desktop), so it doesn't hold the window; a test pins that a COG added from a saved connection records it, its address bound to the login, and follows the login.
- The guide says a file without a small enough image is refused where the session waits, and added, saying why, elsewhere.

Summary
A WMS, WFS, OGC API or other web service behind HTTP Basic auth or an API key can't be used today: a saved connection has nowhere to keep a login, so the only option is a token pasted into the address, which is removed when the project is saved (#699).
This is step 1 of Part B of #757, as split in this comment: session-only logins.
