fix(layout): draw a legend's points as the map does - #1442
A layout's legend drew every point as a circle. It now draws a point with the code the map uses (draw_marker for a plain point, point_marks::draw for stacked marks), so the two match. The commits take one thing each:
Marks: the marker, or the stacked marks, at their size and with their outline, if any. The 0.5 pt least outline and the 1.5 pt least radius are gone.
Transparency: of the layer and its groups, with the marks composited as one, as the map does, on a page and in a vector export.
Large symbols: a row and the column of swatches grow to hold them, so the labels line up, and a legend sized to its content takes that room. A symbol's side is limited to 2048 pt, as a legend picture's is, since a project can hold any size, and one past it is cut to its box. A see-through symbol is composited in a picture never larger than the canvas and freed after each row, so one near the limit costs that much memory for a moment.
Reference scale: the layer's factor at the frame's scale.
Marks with their own angle:point_marks::reach now reaches a turned square's or triangle's corners, so its row holds them. The map's culling uses the same reach, so it keeps such a mark a little longer.
A class's own marks:LegendEntry gains strokes, so a class's row draws the marks the map gives its features.
Lines and polygons keep their swatch, centred in the column.
What changes for existing work
A legend already on a page keeps its size. If a large symbol makes its rows taller, the last rows may not fit and are cut, as with any legend too small for its rows. A wider column also moves its labels to the right, past the frame's edge if it is narrow, since a legend isn't clipped to its frame, as a long name already isn't. The sample's Cities, up to 18 pt, now takes taller rows and a wider column. Making the legend larger brings them back. The user guide says so.
A pale symbol with no outline can be hard to see on the paper, since the least outline is gone. It looks as it does on the map. A background for the legend would be a separate change.
Not represented
A row has one symbol, so a legend still can't show what changes from feature to feature: a marker's rotation by a field (it draws unturned) and Layer::symbol_by. Nor does it take a layer's blend mode, which depends on what lies under it on the map.
The Layers pane's patch has the same kind of mismatch and isn't changed here.
LegendEntry has a new field, and #1048's diagrams are in main now, so each category's row carries its own mark: without one, on a point layer it would take the layer's stacked marks.
cargo test --workspace --no-fail-fast, skipping whitespace_downloads_keep_their_login_choice_and_read_options, which hangs on this machine (it came from main in feat(connections): log in to web services with basic auth or an API-key header, for the session #1223): all pass except two, in code this PR doesn't change. tests::duckdb_queries_and_databases expects its layers in the opposite order on this machine, which has DuckDB installed. mapgpu::tests::parity_vector_tile_meshes passed before merging main and fails after it; I haven't confirmed that on a clean main.
cargo xtask layers
ui_shot on main and on an earlier commit of this branch: the images below.
The wasm32 build wasn't repeated locally after the last changes. I'm relying on CI's Web app (wasm32) for it.
New tests in crates/render/src/layout.rs compare a legend's pixels with what the map's code draws, for every shape, a hairline outline, stacked marks, a class's own marks and the reference scale. Others check the transparency, including a plain point against the map's compositing, the rows and column that grow, the sizes, a symbol cut to its box, a mark with its own angle and a legend starting off the canvas, on pixels and, for the transparency and the cut, in a recording. a_mark_with_its_own_angle_reaches_its_corners in crates/render/src/point_marks.rs checks the new reach. a_diagrams_rows_keep_their_own_mark_on_a_layer_with_stacked_marks, a_recorded_point_is_cut_at_its_box and an_upright_mark_stays_in_its_row cover a diagram's rows, a recording's cut and an upright mark. a_legend_row_has_its_class_own_strokes in crates/map/src/symbology.rs covers the new field, with the classes stored in either order.
UI evidence
Six layers on a blank map: a square with no outline, a triangle with one, a 3 pt diamond, a circle at 50% transparency, stacked marks and a 36 pt star.
Before (main): every symbol in the legend is a circle.
Point-symbol legends now reflect map styling, including stacked strokes, outlines, transparency, and reference-scale sizing. Legend entries show class-specific strokes where applicable.
Legend rows and swatch columns expand to fit larger point symbols, up to the size limit. Rotated square and triangle markers are better accounted for when determining symbol reach. Symbols may be clipped at the limit, and enlarged symbols or labels may be clipped in existing layouts.
Diagram legend categories now include their own colored circular markers.
Documentation
Updated the layout guide with details on point-symbol legend appearance, sizing, transparency, and clipping.
A legend drew every point as a circle, with an outline of at least 0.5 pt and a radius of at least 1.5 pt, whatever the layer's symbol. It now draws them with the map's own code: the marker, or the layer's stacked marks, at their size and with their outline, if any.
A legend drew a see-through point layer's symbol opaque. It now takes the transparency of the layer and its groups, and composites the marks as one, as the map does, on a page and in a vector export.
A point symbol larger than a legend's row spilled out of it, now that a legend draws it at its size. A row and the column of swatches grow to hold it, so the labels line up, and a legend sized to its content takes that room. A symbol's side is limited to 2048 pt, as a legend picture's is, since a project can hold any size.
A layer with a reference scale draws its points larger or smaller with the map, and its legend drew them at their plain size. A legend now takes the factor at its frame's scale, for the symbol, its row and the column of swatches.
A class can stack marks of its own, and the map draws its points with them, but a legend row knew only its symbol, so it drew the layer's. A legend entry now carries its class's strokes, and the fallback's, and a layout's legend draws and sizes a class's row with them, or the layer's when it has none.
A large point widens a legend's column of swatches: lines and boxes keep a swatch's width in its middle, every name starts past it, and a legend's size counts it for a class's row as for a layer's.

Explanation
[#1441] The PR implements the requested point-symbol matching. layout.rs uses draw_marker for plain points and point_marks::draw for stacked marks. It uses the symbol outline and size, layer and group opacity, and the layer reference-scale factor. LegendEntry.strokes supplies class-specific marks, and point_marks::reach sizes rows and the swatch column. The 2048 pt limit and clipping behavior are implemented. Lines and polygons retain their existing centered swatches. Tests cover shapes, marks, outlines, opacity, reference scale, class marks, sizing, and clipping.

I found one substantive issue (posted inline) and a few minor points. The rest of the change reads as consistent. The LegendEntry literals, the map-side stroke lookup (strokes_in), the size_factor and layer_opacity usage, and the Canvas::sub/place path all match. Graphics layers are excluded from legends, so the line_strokes shortcut is safe there. Nothing was built or run, so these are reading-based conclusions.
Bugs
Symbols larger than 2048 pt are drawn at full size but reserve only a 2048 pt row, so they paint over neighbouring rows. The opaque path does not clip, while the see-through path does, so the two disagree. Confidence: medium-high. Posted inline at crates/render/src/layout.rs:1694.
Security
None found.
Performance
None worth raising. symbol_side runs a few times per row, but each call is cheap.
Quality
docs/user-guide/layouts.md:169 is a long line that breaks the surrounding wrap. Left for the release quality pass.
symbol_side silently clamps to 2048 pt. This is a rendering approximation, not data loss, so I did not treat it as a "Never silent" breach. Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
The UI evidence section of the PR body contains the literal placeholders IMAGE-BEFORE and IMAGE-AFTER. If the screenshots were never uploaded, AGENTS.md requires them for a visible change. Confidence: low, since the placeholders may come from how the PR was staged.
Already raised: 0. There were no prior review threads.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base b7b6930 to PR head 27275aa).
GitHub Pages takes a minute or two to publish a new commit. Newer commits from the fork aren't published until a maintainer adds the preview label (once per commit).
A point past the 2048 pt limit of a legend's row was drawn at its full size when opaque, over the rows around it, though a see-through one was cut to its box. Both are now cut to it, in a recording too, which keeps what lies past its picture's edge. A symbol that fits is still drawn directly.
A legend's width is summed in f32 past a name as wide as its font makes it, so a comparison to a millionth of a millimetre failed on a machine with other fonts.
Medium confidence (about 55%): an existing legend on a page can overflow its frame sideways. swatch_column widens every row's swatch column to the largest point symbol, but legend() doesn't clip to the frame, so labels can run past the right edge. The "existing work" section only mentions height. Posted inline at crates/render/src/layout.rs:1437.
Security
None found. The changes are drawing and layout only. Sizes are clamped (MAX_LEGEND_SIDE, SIZE_FACTORS), and non-finite positions and sizes are guarded.
Performance
Nothing significant. A see-through point allocates a sub-canvas the size of its box, which is small unless the column is wide. Per-row symbol_side calls are O(rows).
Quality (grouped nits, not posted inline)
Medium confidence: the 2048 pt symbol cap is in code and the PR text, but docs/user-guide/layouts.md doesn't mention it.
High confidence: in docs/user-guide/layouts.md, the new text around "the one for the frame's scale…" is wrapped inconsistently with the surrounding paragraph, and one line runs past the usual width.
High confidence: class_strokes.get(k).cloned().unwrap_or_default() is repeated four times in symbology.rs. A small helper would do. Per AGENTS.md, this can wait for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Low confidence (about 25%): clipping a symbol at 2048 pt is an approximation the legend doesn't report, which sits near the "Never silent" rule. I think it is acceptable as a render-only limit, but it is worth a decision.
The non-test code has no new unwrap, expect or unsafe. The new unwrap() calls are in mod tests. The changes stay below L6 and need no egui dependency.
The new LegendEntry.strokes field has no other constructors in the repository (checked with a search), so nothing else breaks.
Prior concerns left alone: 1. The thread on oversized opaque symbols spilling past their row appears resolved. The opaque direct draw is now gated by fits (layout.rs:1695–1697), and oversized symbols take the clipped sub-canvas path. an_oversized_point_stays_in_its_row covers this, so I did not post it again.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base b7b6930 to PR head 9842484).
I read the diff, the legend and map code it calls into (point_marks, Layer::size_factor, Renderer::strokes_in, Canvas::sub/place), the AGENTS.md copy from the base branch, and both earlier review threads. I could not build or run the tests (no shell in this review), so everything below comes from reading the code. No inline comments were posted: I found nothing above low severity.
Bugs
None confirmed. Things I checked and found consistent:
Stroke fallback: the legend falls back to the layer's strokes on an empty Vec. The map does the same through strokes_in, which returns None for empty.
Reference scale: the legend uses ground_res_at / PIXEL_M and multiplies ppp by size_factor, as the map does.
Sizing reach:point_marks::reach covers each marker's drawn extent (the star reaches 0.6 × size, reach uses 0.6).
Oversized symbols: the opaque path that overflowed its row is fixed in the current code. Symbols that don't fit the box go through the picture path, which is clipped.
Empty layers:Dataset::value is bounds-safe, so the new row-0 read in symbol_side can't panic.
Confidence that there is no bug in these paths: about 80%, from reading only.
Security
None found. The change adds no parsing, file access or network access.
Performance
Low (25%): a see-through point allocates a pixmap the size of its box for each row. The box is capped at 2048 pt, and it is clamped to the page in device pixels. At 600 DPI on A4 a maximum-size symbol would allocate about 139 MB. Ordinary symbol sizes are negligible, so I'm not asking for a change.
Quality
Nit: in docs/user-guide/layouts.md, the new text leaves a short line ("Exporting waits up to") that the surrounding wrap doesn't match. This can wait for the release quality pass.
Nit: symbol_side calls symbol_for before its point check, so non-point rows do wasted work. This is trivial.
AGENTS.md
Low (35%): "Never silent" covers data that is truncated or approximated. A point symbol cut to its 2048 pt box, and the rotation, symbol_by and blend-mode differences listed under "Not represented", give no notice in the app. The docs and the PR body do disclose them, and the rule is about data, not drawings, so this is a judgement call.
Earlier review threads
Two earlier concerns left alone (not re-raised):
The oversized opaque symbol: the author's reply says it is fixed in 2880524, and the current code confirms the fix.
The sideways overflow of labels into a narrower frame: no reply yet. The docs now state that labels run past the right edge, so the concern is disclosed but not resolved.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base b7b6930 to PR head b148f80).
Low: a plain point's outline in the legend differs from the map's when it is thinner than half a device pixel. point_marks::draw clamps the stroke to at least 0.5 px, while the map's plain path (draw_marker) strokes at the exact width. The PR says the legend matches the map, and the tests (outlines of 0 and 1 pt) can't see the gap. Posted inline on layout.rs:1697. Confidence: high that the paths differ, low impact.
Security
None found. The new code takes sizes and factors from projects, and every path I traced stays bounded: sizes are capped at 2048 pt, sub-canvases are capped at the page size, and the Option results from sub, Rect::from_xywh and Clip are handled.
Performance
Low, confidence low: a see-through or oversized point row allocates a box-sized pixmap via pm.sub, which can reach page size for a symbol near 2048 pt. The allocation is freed after each row, so it is a peak-memory cost, not a leak.
Quality
Test gap: the oversized-symbol test runs only on the raster path. The recording clip in point_swatch (layout.rs:1706) has no test, although the thread reply says it is covered. Posted inline on layout.rs:3276. Confidence: high.
Nit, for the release quality pass: the docs/user-guide/layouts.md paragraph has an awkward line break at "Exporting waits up to" / "half a minute", and it is long enough to be hard to scan.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. The unwraps are in the tests, which the rule allows.
No new interface strings, so tl! does not apply.
Layering is respected: render already depends on map.
The screenshots are provided. The 2048 pt cut is documented in the user guide. It is a rendering choice, not dropped data, so I don't count it as a silent-loss violation.
I checked the class-stroke keys against the map's strokes_in (Unique by value, Graduated by index), and they match. I also checked the marker geometry against reach, and nothing is clipped. The two earlier threads (the oversized-symbol fix and the sideways overflow) were already answered or fixed, so I left them alone: 2 concerns skipped.

Count filled point markers when deciding the fallback legend row.
legend_at decides whether to add the <all other values> row by checking stroke width. A filled point marker with zero outline width is drawn on the map but fails that check, so its fallback row can be omitted from the legend. The check should also accept a point stroke whose marker fill is visible.

Update the fallback-row eligibility check in legend_at so it accepts a point
stroke with a visible marker fill even when its outline width is zero, while
preserving the existing stroke-width check for other visible strokes.
Add a reversed-storage case to the legend stroke test.
The new test stores classes as a, b. That order matches class_order(), so a legend that assigns strokes by position would pass it. Add a case with storage order b, a. Each legend row then keeps the strokes of its own class.

Add a reversed-storage case to the legend stroke test for `Renderer::Unique`,
storing classes as `b`, `a` while preserving each class’s own strokes. Assert
that legend rows follow `class_order()` with strokes matched by class, and that
the `other` row retains its strokes.
Assert the recorded legend symbol's opacity in this test.
The recording check at the end of a_see_through_point_is_composited_as_one_with_its_groups only confirms that the drawing is non-empty. If the recorded drawing lost the combined 0.25 opacity, this assertion would still pass. Assert the effective opacity of the recorded group, or compare the replayed recording with the raster result. This covers the recording path for the new point-symbol legend behavior.

Bugs: None found. I traced the risky paths against the code they depend on and they agree:
Stroke fallback: an empty class stroke list falls back to the layer's line_strokes, which matches strokes_in and Layer::strokes.
Plain points: draw_point takes the same draw_marker / point_marks::draw branch as the map (lib.rs:1105), and the unclamped outline width matches draw_marker.
Reference scale: size_factor scales the legend's ppp, which also scales the outline, the same as the map's upright path (lib.rs:2836-2837) and raster path (lib.rs:3497).
Off-canvas boxes: the clamped origin and cw/ch handling give a zero-size picture when a box lies wholly off the canvas, so nothing is drawn and nothing panics.
Every LegendEntry struct literal in the workspace has the new field.
Security: None found. No input from outside the repo is parsed or executed by this change.
Performance: Low. Each see-through or oversize point row allocates a box-sized picture, and an oversize symbol makes it canvas-sized. The author acknowledges this in the PR. Per-row reach() calls allocate small vectors, but the work is linear in rows. Not worth a change. (Confidence: low, about 30%.)
Quality:
The MAX_LEGEND_SIDE doc comment at crates/render/src/layout.rs:1363 still describes only pictures. It is now also the cap on symbol sides in points. Posted inline at line 1262 as a nit that may wait for the release quality pass (confidence: high).
The Legend bullet in docs/user-guide/layouts.md is now about 25 lines long and hard to scan. Left for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md: No violations found: no unwrap/expect in non-test code, no new user-visible literals that need tl!, and the PR's before/after screenshots are linked by URL.
Possible "Never silent" gap (confidence: low, about 30%): a point symbol past 2048 pt is cut to its box, and a row that does not fit is dropped, with no notify. The docs disclose both. The legend code never reports skips (for example, pictures that are left out), so this follows existing practice rather than breaking a rule.
Earlier threads: I left 6 alone. All were answered by the author and fixed in the code (the recording test, the oversize cap, the hairline outline, the off-canvas clamp, the legend overflow, which the author documented). The symbol_by / blend-mode docs thread is unresolved, but the current guide already names both caveats.

Scope: the three changed files (crates/render/src/layout.rs, crates/map/src/symbology.rs, docs/user-guide/layouts.md) read against the base-branch AGENTS.md, the map's own point and stroke code (Layer::strokes/style, Renderer::strokes_in, layer_opacity, point_marks, draw_marker, Canvas::sub/place, marker_reach/marker_path), and the command that sets reference_scale. I could not build or run tests in this session, so everything below comes from reading the code.
Bugs: None found. The new legend path matches the map's behaviour where I checked it:
Stroke fallback: empty class strokes fall back to the layer's line_strokes, the same as strokes_in.
Plain points route through draw_marker, and stacked marks through point_marks::draw, as the map does.
The 2048 pt cap, the fits test and the picture path agree with each other, and the clamp to the canvas origin is correct.
marker_reach (0.6 × size) covers every built-in marker's extent.
Security: None. Symbol sizes are clamped to 2048 pt, NaN and inf can't reach the layout through the command path (reference_scale is range-checked in engine/src/cmd/layer.rs), and no new input parsing was added.
Performance: None worth raising. Each see-through point row allocates a picture the width of the swatch column and the height of its row, which is bounded by the canvas and freed after the row.
Quality (nits for the release quality pass, not posted inline):
fn class_strokes in layout.rs (about line 1277) has the same name as Renderer::class_strokes (symbology.rs:1289) and the class_strokes field. A name such as row_strokes would read more clearly. Confidence: high that this is a readability point.
The see-through tests check pixel bounds for an oversized plain square and stroke-based compositing. No test compares a see-through plain point in the legend with the map's own see-through output. Confidence: moderate.
AGENTS.md:
An oversized symbol (past 2048 pt) is cut to its box silently. The only disclosure is the user-guide paragraph. "Never silent" asks for a notice with a count, and the PR does not add one. This follows the existing pattern for legend pictures over 2048 px, which is also documentation-only. Confidence: about 35%, since the rule is written for data writers and this is rendering.
Prior review threads: I left 7 earlier concerns alone. One is an open quality nit on the MAX_LEGEND_SIDE doc comment, which the release quality pass should handle. The other six were answered or fixed, and I confirmed each fix in the current code: the sideways overflow, which is documented as answered; the recorded oversized-symbol test; the symbol_by and blend-mode docs; the hairline outline routed through draw_marker; the oversized opaque path now going through the picture; and the off-canvas origin clamp.
No inline comments were posted, since none of the findings is a defect to fix in this PR.

enough row space for their full corner extent, rather than using the undersized

rotated square rendered through point_swatch, ensuring its corners are not
clipped.

The review points that have no thread of their own:
class_strokes sharing a name with Renderer::class_strokes: renamed to row_strokes in 3d1faaa.
No test comparing a see-through plain point with the map's output: added in ab56d8b.
Docstring coverage: the legend's tests are described in 7571363.
The guide's long Legend bullet: split into its parts in c74b39f.
"Never silent" for a symbol cut at 2048 pt: no change. A legend has no way to report what it leaves out, as with a picture past the same limit, and the guide states it.
tests::duckdb_queries_and_databases and pluginsui::tests::unloaded_plugins_offer_retry_and_remove fail on my machine, and neither is in code this PR changes. I'll take them up separately, along with tests::adding_a_layer_keeps_the_view.
I read the full diff, the earlier review threads, and the code the change depends on: Canvas::sub/place, size_factor, draw_marker, point_marks::{draw, plain}, the map's point path, and the group-opacity helpers. Only one new defect survived checking. I posted it as an inline comment.
Bugs
Upright squares and triangles still reach less than their corners (crates/render/src/point_marks.rs, reach) — confidence high on the geometry, low on impact. The reach is gated on the angle, but a mark's distance from its own centre doesn't depend on angle. An upright 40 pt square has corners at 25.46 pt, but the row is sized for 24 pt. Its corners spill about 1.45 pt into neighbouring rows on the opaque path, and get clipped on the see-through path. The test a_mark_with_its_own_angle_reaches_its_corners enshrines the 24 pt value. This is a repost of the rotated-corner thread: the code has changed, but the upright case still has the problem.
I found no crash path, no panic, and no inconsistency between the legend and the map for stroke class fallback, group opacity, size_factor, or the plain-point path.
Security
None found.
Performance
None worth raising. symbol_side is re-evaluated a few times per row, but each evaluation is a small allocation.
Quality
None posted inline. The stale MAX_LEGEND_SIDE doc comment from the earlier thread has already been updated in the code.
AGENTS.md
Never silent (confidence about 30%). A symbol past 2048 pt is cut to its box, and rows that don't fit at the bottom of a frame are dropped, with no notice. The user guide documents both, and pictures are treated the same way today. If the rule covers rendering truncation, these need a notice; if not, the docs are enough.
Already raised (left alone)
I left seven earlier concerns alone: the MAX_LEGEND_SIDE doc comment, the label overflow (answered by the author), the recording test, the oversized opaque path, the hairline outline, the off-canvas clamp, and the guide's symbol_by caveat. Each is either fixed or answered. I reposted one: the rotated-corner thread, with the new upright-case detail.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base b7b6930 to PR head dea3680).
Build break (high confidence, read from the code, not built here).crates/map/src/diagram.rs:252 builds a LegendEntry literal without the new strokes field. pub mod diagram; is always compiled, so rustgis-map fails to compile and every downstream crate and test with it. diagram.rs is not in the diff, so the literal was missed. The PR description's test results cannot hold for this head. Fix: add strokes: Vec::new(), to that literal. Posted inline on crates/map/src/symbology.rs:763.
Upright squares and triangles still under-reach (re-raised; high on geometry, low-medium on impact). This is the open thread on point_marks.rs:135. Commit 651ecc4 added an angle % 90 gate, but corner distance doesn't depend on angle. An upright 40 pt square has corners at 25.46 pt but reports 24.0, and an upright triangle reports 0.6 against a true 0.625. The new test a_mark_with_its_own_angle_reaches_its_corners pins the wrong value. Posted inline with a suggestion to drop the gate.
Security
None found in the changed code.
Performance
Nothing significant. symbol_side calls symbol_for once per row, which is linear in the row count.
Quality
Low-confidence nit, not posted: point_swatch's recording clip is Rect::from_xywh(left, top, cw, ch), where left/top are floored and cw/ch are ceiled. The clip therefore runs up to 1 px past the row's box, which slightly weakens the "cut to its box" claim for oversized symbols in vector exports.
AGENTS.md
Low confidence (~30%): a symbol past 2048 pt is cut without a Session::notify notice. The user guide documents it, and a symbol size is a display setting rather than data, so this may be acceptable. Worth a maintainer decision.
No unwrap/expect in non-test code, no unsafe, no std::time, no new user-visible literals outside tl!.
Prior reviews: 9 threads exist. I re-raised 1 (point_marks.rs:135) because its code changed and the problem persists. I left 8 alone: the layout.rs threads at 1443, 3393, 1262, 1694, 1697 and 1704; layouts.md:166; and layout.rs:1259, whose 45° case the author fixed.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base c4c9237 to PR head eb8b46d).
Two points from the last reviews with no thread of their own:
The recording's clip running up to a pixel past the box: fixed in a2c061b. a_recorded_point_is_cut_at_its_box draws a box off the pixel grid.
"Never silent" for a symbol cut at 2048 pt: no change, as I said above.
After merging main, three more tests misbehave on my machine, none of them in code this PR changes: whitespace_downloads_keep_their_login_choice_and_read_options hangs, mapgpu::tests::parity_vector_tile_meshes fails, and pluginsui::tests::unloaded_plugins_offer_retry_and_remove failed twice and then passed. I haven't confirmed the first two on a clean main. I'll take them up separately.
Overall: no confirmed bugs, security issues, or AGENTS.md violations in the changed code. The earlier blocking issue (the LegendEntry literal in diagram.rs missing strokes) is fixed at crates/map/src/diagram.rs:273. I read the diff, the staged prior reviews, and the surrounding code. I did not build or run the tests, since this review had no shell. No inline comments: nothing below is strong enough for a thread.
Bugs
None confirmed.
Low (about 35%): on raster (PNG) output, a symbol past 2048 pt is cut at whole pixels, outward from the box. Canvas::place ignores clip on the pixel path (crates/render/src/canvas.rs:241-246), so the box is rounded to pixel edges. Vector export is cut exactly. Impact is at most one pixel, only for oversized symbols.
Security
None found. Sizes are bounded by MAX_LEGEND_SIDE, LineStroke and LineMarkers values are clamped on load and on set, and the new code parses no new input.
Performance
Low (about 60%): a see-through symbol whose row doesn't fit its box allocates a pixmap the size of the canvas, once per row. Up to 64 classes at export DPI could allocate that many in turn. Each is freed before the next, and the PR description documents it. Not a blocker.
Quality (for the release quality pass)
crates/map/src/diagram.rs:273: the category mark is attached to line and polygon diagram legends too, where strokes is never read. Leaving it empty when line is true would be clearer.
crates/render/src/layout.rs:1443 and legend_size_mm: the swatch column takes the widest symbol across all rows, including rows the frame will cut, so one cut row can widen every row. Drawing and sizing agree, so this is a choice worth one sentence, not a bug.
AGENTS.md
Never silent (about 35%): a point symbol past 2048 pt is cut with no notice. Only docs/user-guide/layouts.md says so. The WMS "left out" rule follows the same pattern, so this matches the existing convention. Flagging it for a maintainer decision.
Checked and fine: no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code; no new user-visible literals; no std::time; layering holds (render depends on map); no new dependency or asset; the guide's point-symbol paragraph matches the code (layer_opacity, size_factor, row_strokes).
Earlier concerns left alone: 3.
Two open threads on the reach gate in point_marks.rs:135 say upright squares and triangles reach less than their corners. I think they are wrong. The row box is axis-aligned, and an upright square spans ±0.45 × size on each axis. An upright triangle spans ±0.5 × size in x and −0.55 to +0.375 × size in y. Both fit within the 0.6 reach. The angle gate is right, and any angle that isn't a multiple of 90° gets the Euclidean corner reach. The author may want to reply to those threads.
One thread on legend overflow sideways was declined by the author and documented in the guide. I left it alone.
The other resolved threads (the recording test, the oversized opaque path, the hairline outline, the off-canvas origin clamp, the blend-mode doc, the rotated-corner reach) are present in this head.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR against main (merge base c4c9237 to PR head ba8d710). Trees not truncated.
Three points from the last review, none of which changes the code, since none is a defect:
A symbol past 2048 pt on a PNG is cut at whole pixels: at most one pixel past its box, only for a symbol that size. Canvas::place doesn't clip on the pixel path, and I'm not changing that here. A vector export is cut exactly.
A diagram's category carries its mark on line and polygon layers too: only a point's swatch reads it, so it has no effect there, and one rule for every layer keeps DiagramSettings::legend simple.
A row the frame cuts still counts for the column's width: that's deliberate, since the legend's size and its drawing use the same column, so the labels line up in both.
tests::adding_a_layer_keeps_the_view failed again in CI on ba8d710, as it did on b148f80, and I reran that job. I haven't reproduced it, but from reading the code it looks like a race: add_cog asks for a header that probe_blocking has just stored, without waiting, so a cache::clear() from a test running in parallel would leave the map unframed. I'll take it up separately.

Summary
A layout's legend drew every point as a circle. It now draws a point with the code the map uses (
draw_markerfor a plain point,point_marks::drawfor stacked marks), so the two match. The commits take one thing each:point_marks::reachnow reaches a turned square's or triangle's corners, so its row holds them. The map's culling uses the same reach, so it keeps such a mark a little longer.LegendEntrygainsstrokes, so a class's row draws the marks the map gives its features.Lines and polygons keep their swatch, centred in the column.
What changes for existing work
Cities, up to 18 pt, now takes taller rows and a wider column. Making the legend larger brings them back. The user guide says so.Not represented
A row has one symbol, so a legend still can't show what changes from feature to feature: a marker's rotation by a field (it draws unturned) and
Layer::symbol_by. Nor does it take a layer's blend mode, which depends on what lies under it on the map.The Layers pane's patch has the same kind of mismatch and isn't changed here.

LegendEntryhas a new field, and #1048's diagrams are inmainnow, so each category's row carries its own mark: without one, on a point layer it would take the layer's stacked marks.Testing
