Part of #1291, step 2 (desktop caps scaled to the machine): the memory caps. Closes #1318, which asks for the same for MAX_SAMPLES and MAX_PAGED_FEATURES.

What

Three fixed memory caps now follow the computer's memory on the desktop. Each plans for a quarter of the physical memory (a container's limit counts, when it is lower), never below today's fixed value and never above a ceiling. The web app keeps today's fixed values.

Limit Was Floor (today's) Planned per unit Ceiling
Samples a raster read holds raster::MAX_SAMPLES 120 million (32 million in the browser) 8 bytes (a sample takes 4; reading briefly needs about twice) 1 billion
Pixels of a raster a tool makes rasterops::MAX_PIXELS 64 million 16 bytes (input, output and a working grid or two) 512 million
Features read from a service page by page ogc::MAX_PAGED_FEATURES 100,000 20 KB (about 100,000 for every 8 GB, as #1318 proposes) 1 million

So a computer with 16 GB reads rasters of up to about 500 million samples, makes rasters of up to about 268 million pixels, and reads about 200,000 paged features. The IBGE soil map in #1318 (114,658 polygons) is read whole on such a machine.

The limits are readable, following #1291's determinism notes:

  • gp.env returns them (limits: memory, rasterSamples, outputPixels, pagedFeatures), so a script or model can see why a run that passes elsewhere is refused here.
  • The errors and notes that name a limit give this computer's value: Project Raster, Georeference, the Zarr reader, IDW, kriging, Resample to a target, and the paging notes of OGC API and ArcGIS services.
  • Tests pass fixed amounts: memory::scaled takes the memory as an argument.

How

  • rustgis_data::memory is new. physical() reads the memory once through sysinfo (MIT, with only its system feature, a desktop-only dependency), so a session keeps the same limits. scaled(memory, floor, ceiling, bytes) turns it into a limit.
  • The three constants become functions: raster::max_samples(), rasterops::max_pixels() and ogc::max_paged_features(), with their floors and ceilings as constants (SAMPLES_FLOOR, PIXELS_FLOOR, PAGED_FEATURES_FLOOR and the _CEILINGs). Every use now calls the function; the analysis caps derived from MAX_PIXELS (the interpolators' quarter, the workspace mosaic's half) follow it.
  • The TIFF decoder's buffer limit is still four bytes a sample of the cap, so it grows with it and stays inside the share planned for.
  • Why sysinfo: the workspace forbids unsafe, and reading physical memory on macOS (sysctl) and Windows (GlobalMemoryStatusEx) needs it. The new packages (sysinfo, ntapi, objc2-io-kit) are MIT, Apache-2.0 or Zlib, all allowed by deny.toml. The fuzz lockfile has the same additions.

Not in this part

Tests

  • a_limit_follows_the_memory_between_its_floor_and_ceiling: 16 GiB at 8 bytes a unit gives 512 Mi, never below the floor or above the ceiling, the floor when the memory is unknown, and no overflow or division by zero.
  • the_memory_is_read_once_and_stays: the memory read is at least 64 MiB and the same on a second call.
  • The gp.env part of the analysis tour checks that each limit is at least its floor.
  • a_warp_refuses_a_globe_in_degrees_and_bounds_its_memory now uses a strip a billion metres long, past the ceiling, so it is refused on any computer. Before, it relied on the fixed 120 million.
  • totals_and_columns_too_large_to_hold_are_errors (from the review of feat(engine): raster commands the machine can't hold are errors, not crashes (#1291 step 1, part 3) #1371): a data cube's totals and columns of an impossible size are errors, and small ones are made as before.
  • cargo xtask ci passes locally (fmt, clippy, tests, layers), apart from two tests that fail only on this machine (GDAL and a damaged-Shapefile fixture). cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passes, so sysinfo stays out of the web app.

…ktop (opengeos#1291 step 2, opengeos#1318)

Three fixed memory caps become functions of the computer's memory, read once through sysinfo
(rustgis_data::memory, a container's limit counting when it is lower). Each plans for a quarter
of it, never below today's fixed value (still the browser's limit) and never above a ceiling:
- raster::max_samples (was MAX_SAMPLES): 8 bytes a sample, 120 million to 1 billion.
- rasterops::max_pixels (was MAX_PIXELS): 16 bytes a pixel, 64 million to 512 million.
- ogc::max_paged_features (was MAX_PAGED_FEATURES): 20 KB a feature, 100,000 to 1 million.

gp.env returns them ("limits"), and the errors and notes that name one give this computer's
value. memory::scaled takes the memory as an argument, so tests pass fixed amounts. The work
caps (viewshed, IDW, kriging) are left for a follow-up.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(data): the memory limits follow the computer's memory on the desktop (#1291 step 2)" matches the main change. The PR replaces three fixed desktop caps (MAX_SAMPLES, MAX_PIXELS, MAX_PAGED_FEATURES) with functions that scale with physical memory, using a floor and ceiling, and adds a new memory module. The title is specific and accurate. The issue reference in parentheses is extra detail but does not make the title unclear.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections. The Summary section explains what changed, why, and how, with a clear table of limits, floors, and ceilings. The Testing section lists new and updated tests and the local CI result, including two failures the author attributes to the local machine. The UI evidence section is absent, but the PR has no visible UI change, and the template says to keep the 'No visible UI change.' line. The description includes that text in substance. The Related issue content is present in the opening line (Closes #1318, part of #1291). The description is thorough and mostly complete.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Changes outside the two named caps are linked to the same memory-limit work and are supported by the PR description.

  • rasterops::MAX_PIXELS becomes max_pixels(). It is used by workflows.rs (Resample to a target), imagery.rs (workspace mosaic, / 2), and the interpolator analysis caps (kriging.rs, IDW in rasterops.rs). #1318 does not name this cap. The PR presents it as step 2 of #1291 and uses the same scaling rule. The change is in the same memory-limit theme, so it is not unrelated.
  • The TIFF decoder buffer limit (geotiff.rs, read_saved_parts) follows max_samples(). This keeps the decoder inside the planned share. read_saved_parts uses BROWSER_SAMPLES for saved web-app parts. This keeps the chosen overview the same as in the browser. This supports the sample limit.
  • gp.env limits output in workflows.rs and its test in tests.rs expose the limits. This supports the desktop limits and is documented.
  • The warp test uses a strip past the new ceiling. It replaces a dependence on the old fixed value, so it supports the change.
  • totals_and_columns_too_large_to_hold_are_errors in cube.rs is test-only (+15 lines). It checks allocation-failure errors, which are memory-related. The PR states it comes from a review of #1371. It changes no behavior. This is loosely connected, but not a demonstrated unrelated change.
  • The sysinfo dependency, memory.rs, and the license notices support the memory read. The license notices are required because of the new dependency.
  • Documentation changes describe the new limits.

No change was found that is demonstrably unrelated to the memory limits.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #1318 has two groups of coding requirements.

[Scaling and floors: MET] Desktop limits scale with memory. raster::max_samples() uses SAMPLES_FLOOR (120M) and SAMPLES_CEILING (1B), at 8 bytes per unit. ogc::max_paged_features() uses PAGED_FEATURES_FLOOR (100,000) and PAGED_FEATURES_CEILING (1M), at 20 KB per unit. memory::scaled clamps each result between floor and ceiling. Both fall back to the floor when memory is unknown. On wasm32, memory::physical() returns None, so the browser keeps its fixed values (32M samples, 100,000 features). The old constants are replaced at all call sites in the diff.

[Deviation, disclosed: NOTED] The issue asks for limits from memory "available when RustGIS starts". The code uses total physical memory (or a lower container limit), read once at first use. The PR description states this choice. It does not fail the issue, but it differs from the issue wording.

[Read messages: NOT MET] The issue requires that a cap-related read message state the computer-specific limit and that a smaller area or lower resolution may fit. The messages now name the computer-specific value. Two read-cap messages lack the second part:

  • crates/data/src/raster/zarr.rs plan: "{path} is {w} × {h}, more than the {max} cells a raster holds on this computer" gives no smaller-area or lower-resolution guidance.
  • crates/data/src/ogc.rs paging notes (ArcGIS and OGC API): "read up to {n} features on this computer" gives no such guidance.
    The warp messages already advise a larger cellSize or smaller extent. That wording predates this PR, and it is not the issue's required wording for the new limit text. The geotiff, ascii and read_scan messages were not inspected. Their wording is unknown.

[Tests: PASS] a_limit_follows_the_memory_between_its_floor_and_ceiling and the_memory_is_read_once_and_stays cover scaling and reading memory once. The gp.env check in the analysis tour covers the floors. The changes add no test that asserts the read-message wording.

Resolution

Make every cap-related read message state the computer-specific limit and that a smaller area or a lower resolution may fit. At minimum, change the zarr plan error in crates/data/src/raster/zarr.rs and the ArcGIS and OGC API paging notes in crates/data/src/ogc.rs. Check and update the geotiff, ascii and read_scan limit messages the same way. Add a test that asserts the wording of at least one such message. Keep the scaling, floors and ceilings as they are.

Code review

I reviewed the whole diff against the base, read the surrounding source for the changed call sites, and checked it against AGENTS.md. There were no earlier review threads, so nothing was skipped as already raised. I could not build or run tests in this environment, so compile-level claims are from reading the code only.

Bugs

  • None found. The clamp in memory::scaled cannot panic, since the ceiling is floored to the floor first. The usize overflow paths and the u64::MAX test case are handled. The ASCII reader bounds its reservation by the text length, so a hostile header cannot force a 4 GB allocation. The overview fallbacks that depend on size are reported through imagery.rs. Confidence: medium-high.

Security

  • None found. sysinfo is confined to the non-wasm target table in crates/data/Cargo.toml, and the new code has no unwrap, unsafe or new input parsing. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • None significant. physical() is memoised in a OnceLock and max_samples() is called once per read. Confidence: high.

Quality (nits, grouped; per AGENTS.md these can wait for the release quality pass)

  • analysis/src/kriging.rs and analysis/src/rasterops.rs call max_pixels() twice in the same error path. Hoist it to a local.
  • crates/data/Cargo.toml declares sysinfo locally, while the other dependencies use workspace = true. The neighbouring tempfile = "3" does the same, so this matches precedent.
  • The docs lines in analysis.md (about lines 723 and 743) are longer than the surrounding wrap width.
  • The memory.rs test the_memory_is_read_once_and_stays only checks that a second call matches the first, so it is weak evidence of read-once behaviour.

AGENTS.md

  • Stale third-party notices (inline comment posted). The PR adds sysinfo and its transitive crates but does not refresh THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt or apps/rustgis-python/THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt. Neither file lists sysinfo or ntapi. release.yml runs cargo xtask notices --check, so the release build fails. CI's check only warns, so CI passes. Confidence: high.

Concerns already raised in earlier threads: 0. Nothing was skipped.

Nitpick Compare each gp.env limit with its scaled value, not only its floor.

6444-6447: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Compare each gp.env limit with its scaled value, not only its floor.

The new assertions pass whenever a limit is at or above its floor. A getter that returned its floor would still pass them. On hosts where the scaled value is above the floor, the proposed equality catches that regression. The expected value uses the same physical() value as the getters, so the equality also holds on hosts with unknown or small memory, where scaled returns the floor.

🧪 Suggested fix
     assert!(limit("pagedFeatures") >= rustgis_data::ogc::PAGED_FEATURES_FLOOR, "{env}");
+    let memory = rustgis_data::memory::physical();
+    let scaled = |floor, ceiling, bytes| rustgis_data::memory::scaled(memory, floor, ceiling, bytes);
+    assert_eq!(limit("rasterSamples"), scaled(rustgis_data::raster::SAMPLES_FLOOR, rustgis_data::raster::SAMPLES_CEILING, 8), "{env}");

Update the `gp.env` limit assertions to compare `rasterSamples`, `outputPixels`,
and `pagedFeatures` with their scaled expected values, not just their floors.
Derive expectations using the same `physical()` value and each limit’s existing
floor, ceiling, and bytes-per-unit parameters so the checks also hold when
scaling falls back to the floor.

From the review of opengeos#1372:

Security (medium confidence, a design call to confirm): this TIFF decode buffer used to be fixed at 4 × 120M = 480 MB on the desktop. With the scaled limit it is now 4 × max_samples(), which reaches about 4 GB at the 1-billion ceiling and about a quarter of RAM on a 16 GB machine. A compressed TIFF that decompresses far beyond its size (a decompression bomb) can now make the reader allocate that much instead of 480 MB. The try_reserve paths turn an allocation failure into an error rather than a crash, so this is memory pressure rather than a crash. If the intent is that the scaled limit covers only the decoded raster, consider keeping this buffer at the fixed 480 MB floor, and say so in the PR body. Either way, the trade-off is worth stating explicitly.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the prior threads. The change is careful: the new limits have floors that match today's values, ceilings, and tests for the scaling. I found no crash path, no silent data loss, and no wasm break. The web app keeps its fixed limits, and sysinfo is in the cfg(not(wasm32)) section.

I left 3 earlier concerns alone because they were already raised and resolved: the missing sysinfo notices (refreshed in 7a76015), the ArcGIS first-page note (answered: partial_note covers it), and the saved-parts browser limit (fixed in 7a76015 by read_saved_parts).

Bugs

  • None found. I checked that no references to the removed MAX_SAMPLES, MAX_PIXELS or MAX_PAGED_FEATURES remain. I also checked that read_saved_parts matches the only producer of parts (the web app's parts.rs), and that the overflow and clamp paths in scaled are safe. Confidence: high.

Security

  • Decode-buffer headroom scales with RAM. decoding_buffer_size went from a fixed 480 MB to up to about 4 GB, so a decompression-bomb TIFF can drive a much larger allocation. Allocation failure is an error, not a crash. Inline comment posted on crates/data/src/raster/geotiff.rs:1031. Confidence: medium; this is a design call the PR should state.

Performance

  • None. The limits are read once through OnceLock, and the per-call cost is negligible.

Quality (left for the release quality pass)

  • crates/engine/src/tests.rs:1967: geotiff_parts_open_and_survive_a_saved_project builds its parts with the desktop read_sparse limit, although the web app builds them with the browser limit. The sample is small, so the test passes either way, but it does not mirror the web flow. Confidence: high on the mismatch, low on impact.
  • damaged_part_containers_never_panic has the same mismatch (max_samples() where the browser limit applies). Confidence: medium.
  • docs/user-guide/analysis.md:862: the column header "Fixed (web app, smallest)" holds the desktop floors (120 million), which reads as the web value. The text "never below the web app's fixed limits" is also loose. The memory key that gp.env now returns is not documented. Confidence: high.
  • docs/user-guide/analysis.md has two overlong wrapped lines (around 869 and 1042). Confidence: high.
  • memory.rs scaled test: 1 << 40 as usize and the usize::MAX identity would fail on a 32-bit target. wasm32 unit tests are not run in CI, so the impact is latent. Confidence: medium.

AGENTS.md

  • Compliant on the rules I checked: no unwrap/expect/unsafe in non-test code, a regression check in gp.env, notices refreshed, the new dependency is MIT, and no new user-facing format! strings reach the UI. The data crate cannot use i18n (L1), and the existing error strings already use format!.

Nitpick Add a saved-parts test that fails if the reopen limit changes.

1830-1834: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Add a saved-parts test that fails if the reopen limit changes.

a_part_container_opens_as_a_tif reads a 512×512 image, which has 262,144 samples. That size selects the full image under both BROWSER_SAMPLES (32,000,000) and max_samples(). The test therefore passes even if read_saved_parts at crates/data/src/raster/geotiff.rs:982 used max_samples(). The damaged-container test does not compare raster values, so it does not cover this path either.

A detecting test needs an image above 32,000,000 samples, where the overview chosen under BROWSER_SAMPLES differs from the full image. Reopen the saved parts through read_bytes and compare the reopened raster with the one read_in_parts produced under the same limit. Single-band cog::example output cannot exceed 4096 × 4096 samples, so this test needs a different fixture.

A limit parameter on read_saved_parts alone would not catch this regression. The value that must be checked is the constant that read_saved_parts passes at line 982. A test that supplies its own limit does not exercise that constant.

Review comment at @crates/data/src/raster/geotiff.rs around lines 1830 - 1834:
Add a saved-parts regression test that exercises the limit used internally by
read_saved_parts, rather than supplying a test-specific limit. Use a fixture
with more than 32,000,000 samples so the overview selected under BROWSER_SAMPLES
differs from the full image, then reopen the parts with read_bytes and compare
the reopened raster with the raster produced by read_in_parts under that same
limit.
