Summary

Adds Check Geometry (checkGeometry, Tools pane › Data Management › Features), the first half of the roadmap item "Vector tools, each writing a new layer: check and fix geometry". A Repair Geometry tool that starts from the same checks will follow in a separate pull request.

The tool checks each feature (the selected ones, or all) against the OGC Simple Features rules (OGC 06-103r4 / ISO 19125-1, 6.1.11.1 Polygon and 6.1.12 MultiPolygon). It writes the features that have problems to a new layer, <input>_check by default. Each row is the input feature as stored, with the same id, fields, attributes and CRS, plus two text fields:

  • problem: stable codes, joined with , and never translated;
  • detail: a short description of each problem with its part and ring (counted from 1), e.g. exterior ring of part 1 crosses itself; 3 repeated vertices in ring 2 of part 1.
Code What is wrong
null_geometry No geometry, or one without coordinates
non_finite_coordinate NaN or infinite coordinates. The row is written without geometry, so it can't spoil the layer's extent
too_few_points A line part with fewer than 2 distinct points, a ring with fewer than 3, a polygon part without rings
ring_not_closed The ring's last point is not its first (checked as stored: GeoJSON and WKT keep open rings)
repeated_vertex The same vertex twice in a row
self_intersection A ring crosses itself, touches itself, or runs back over itself (a spike)
hole_outside_shell A hole not inside its exterior ring
rings_intersect Two rings of one polygon overlap or touch along a line
disconnected_interior The interior is split into pieces by rings touching each other at points
parts_overlap Two polygons of one multipart feature overlap or touch along a line
too_complex More work than the per-feature bound; reported, never taken for valid

Lines may cross themselves (OGC doesn't require simple lines), and ring orientation is not checked, because GeoJSON and Shapefiles wind rings in opposite directions. The checks work in stored coordinates, without projection.

Messages (one per kind, with counts):

  • Check Geometry: 2 of 340 features have problems (self_intersection: 1, ring_not_closed: 1), or no problems found in N features (the output layer is then empty);
  • how many features were written without geometry (non-finite coordinates);
  • how many were too complex to check fully;
  • how many had rings or parts that weren't checked against each other, because a ring was already unusable;
  • extra attribute values beyond the layer's fields;
  • a renamed problem/detail field when the input already has one.

How it checks

The checks are in a new module, crates/analysis/src/validity.rs, that a repair can reuse. geo's Validation isn't used for the main checks for four reasons:

  • its self-intersection test compares every pair of segments in a ring, which is quadratic;
  • it rebuilds the shell's relate graph for every hole;
  • it relates every pair of parts;
  • its relate can panic ("found single null side") on rings that cross themselves.

Instead:

  • Crossings. One sweep over all ring segments of a feature finds every crossing, touch and shared stretch, with geo's robust line_intersection. The number of segment pairs it will compare is counted exactly before it starts.
  • Rings and parts that don't touch. They are either apart or nested, which a point-in-ring test tells.
  • Rings and parts that touch. geo's Relate (DE-9IM) handles them, and only rings that are themselves simple reach it.
  • Split interior. For rings that touch only at points, a graph links each ring to each point where it touches another ring. The interior is disconnected exactly when this graph has a cycle (union-find). Several rings meeting at one point is fine. geo's Validation misses this case, and a test shows that.
  • Work bound. 50M per feature, the same bound as the topology checks. Memory the checks hold counts as work too: every contact, touch point and pair of rings or parts kept for checking costs 64. So a hostile multipart feature becomes too_complex before it fills memory. A polygon's coordinates are charged before its rings are copied for the sweep (16 each). A feature has at most 3,125,000 coordinates to sweep, about 325 MB while it is checked, and a 1M-coordinate polygon still checks fully. Measured in release: a 1M-vertex polygon takes 69 ms, a 100k-vertex shell with 400 holes 29 ms, and a feature at the bound about 0.25 s. Progress and cancellation are reported per feature.
  • Output memory. The checks run first and keep only what the output needs. The output's size is then estimated and the browser asked for the room (web_has_room, as Split Line At Vertices and Feature Vertices To Points do) before anything is copied, and the copies are fallible. A selection too large for the browser stops with a message instead of aborting, and a cancel stops the copies too.
  • Memory while checking. Each buffer that grows with a feature is reserved fallibly: ring copies, segments, the sweep's orders, the maps of contacts, the touch points, and the pairs of boxes. A refused reservation makes the feature too_complex ("not enough memory to check it", with its own notice), never valid, and the checks that copy nothing still run. Small per-feature allocations (at most 20 short descriptions) and geo's relate (the polygons handed to it and the graph it builds) are not fallible; relate's input is bounded by the work charge.
  • In the browser. A panic can't be caught there, so only rings that are simple themselves reach geo's relate. That is also what geo's own Validation::is_valid runs on, and the web app already calls it (sketch editing, vector tile export). Natively a relate failure is caught and reported as too_complex, with its own notice.

No new dependency (geo 0.33 is already used). No ribbon button: built-in tools appear in the Tools pane from their toolbox.

Testing

  • cargo xtask ci, the wasm32 build of rustgis-web, and pre-commit run --all-files.
  • crates/analysis/tests/check_geometry.rs (18 integration tests through rustgis_analysis::run):
    • each code on its own, with exact problem and detail, and several codes in one feature in a fixed order;
    • clean points, lines, polygons with holes and multipolygons give an empty layer and the clean message;
    • edge cases: a triangle ring, a ring touching itself at a vertex, a collinear ring, duplicated closing points;
    • holes touching the shell or each other at one point (valid), at two points or in a loop (disconnected interior), and an island touching its lake;
    • the selection is honoured, attributes, ids, CRS and the output name are kept, an existing problem field gets another name;
    • non-finite coordinates are written without geometry;
    • a feature past the work bound is too_complex;
    • empty layers, layers of null geometries, long problem lists cut with a count, extra attribute values, unusable input.
  • The same shapes are read through the real GeoJSON, CSV (WKT) and Shapefile readers. The tests first assert what each reader delivers: GeoJSON and WKT keep open rings and bowties, and the Shapefile writer closes and reorients rings.
  • Unit tests in validity.rs:
    • the pure checks;
    • agreement with geo's Validation on the shapes it judges;
    • the exact work accounting (a feature needing n work passes with a budget of n and is too_complex with n - 1).
  • The existing sweeps over every tool (hostile parameters, defaults, the output parameter) pick it up.
  • Mutation check by hand: 47 mutants killed, one equivalent (one survived at first, touch points merged by one coordinate, and got a test). Among them:
    • closure check skipped;
    • repeated-vertex count off by one;
    • codes mapped wrong, indices not 1-based;
    • selection ignored;
    • non-finite geometry kept;
    • singular and plural swapped;
    • an over-budget feature taken for valid;
    • closing segments not neighbours;
    • nesting tested one way only;
    • a hole crossing the shell counted as inside;
    • no deduplication of touch points, the cycle test never firing, or firing for rings meeting at one point;
    • touch points merged by one coordinate;
    • touches recorded across parts;
    • the work charge for touch points, for kept pairs or for coordinates skipped or set to 1;
    • relate failures counted as the work limit, or not reported;
    • the output's room check skipped, or text or the drawing copy left out of the estimate.

UI evidence

New tool (after only): the Check Geometry form in the Tools pane, and the output layer's table on a layer of five parcels (one valid, a bowtie, a hole outside its shell, an unclosed ring, a hole touching the shell twice).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Check Geometry to identify features with invalid or missing geometry and provide problem details in an output layer. The tool can check selected features or the entire layer.
    • The output includes only features with geometry problems. When no problems are found, the result is empty; details list up to 20 problems per feature.
    • Results include problem codes and descriptions, with counts by problem type. Features with non-finite coordinates are included without geometry.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on geometry checks, reported issues, and cases where checks may be incomplete.

…try and says what is wrong

A new tool, checkGeometry (Data Management › Features), checks each
feature (the selection, or all) against the OGC Simple Features rules and
writes those with problems to a new layer, as stored, with their
attributes and two added text fields: problem (stable codes) and detail
(where, by part and ring). It reports missing and empty geometry,
non-finite coordinates (written without geometry), too few points,
unclosed rings, repeated vertices, rings crossing or touching
themselves, holes outside their shell, rings meeting along a line or an
area, an interior split by rings touching at points, and overlapping
parts. Each kind is counted in one notice.

The checks live in crates/analysis/src/validity.rs so a repair tool can
start from them. One sweep over a feature's ring segments finds every
contact with geo's robust line_intersection; geo's relate only sees
simple rings, and a split interior is a cycle in the graph of rings and
their touch points. The work per feature, memory held included, is
bounded: a feature past it is reported as too_complex, never taken for
valid.

Code review

Bugs

  • Relate failures are reported as work-limit failures. The too_complex notice (check_geometry.rs:78) counts both Limit::Work and Limit::Relate, so a caught geo relate panic is described as "too complex for the work limit". The docs' too_complex row has the same gap. Confidence: high on the wording, low on how often it's reached. Posted inline.
  • The "unrelated" notice gives the wrong reason. check_geometry.rs:85 says the rings "have too few points, non-finite coordinates or cross themselves". relate_parts also sets unrelated when a part has a hole outside its shell or rings touching along a line, and Checked::unrelated documents that. Confidence: high. Posted inline.

Security

  • None found. The new code takes hostile geometry, and the work bound, get() indexing, saturating counts and the union-find growth all hold up on reading.

Performance

  • None found in the changed code. Each feature is bounded by MAX_WORK, and the sweep counts its pairs before comparing. The 0.25 s per-feature timing is the author's measurement and I did not reproduce it.

Quality

  • Nits, left for the release quality pass: Code::ALL.iter().position(..) is repeated per code (check_geometry.rs:66 and :112), where code as usize would do; the tuple-returning Problem::key is hard to read; the rows local shadows the rows() helper; the docs example says problem_2, but the code gives problem_3 when problem_2 already exists.
  • Confidence: medium on "is it a bug".

AGENTS.md

  • Possible wasm abort. relate uses catch_unwind (validity.rs ~L998), which can't catch on wasm32-unknown-unknown (panic=abort). The doc comment says only simple rings reach relate "to keep it from failing", but nothing shows that simple touching rings can't trigger geo's panic. Confidence: low.
  • Otherwise the PR follows AGENTS: no unwrap/panic in non-test code, notices are counted and go through ToolResult::messages, there's a clean-input test as well as lossy-input tests, no new dependency, and unsafe isn't used.

Prior review threads: none existed, so none were left alone.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

relate relies on catch_unwind to turn a geo relate panic into Limit::Relate, while the module itself says a failure cannot be caught in the browser. A relate panic on a finite, simple ring pair may therefore terminate the browser run rather than produce too_complex.

The Check Geometry operation aborts instead of returning a problem row.

This can occur when: On wasm, geo's relate operation panics for a finite ring or part pair that passed the preceding checks.

…eason for what it skips

The output is copied only after its size is estimated and the browser
has the room for it, and every copy is fallible, so a large selection of
invalid features stops with a message instead of aborting, and a cancel still stops the copies. A polygon's
coordinates are charged to the work bound before its rings are copied
for the sweep, so what the sweep holds grows with the budget, not with
the feature.

A feature that geo's relate failed on is now reported as such, not as
past the work limit. The notice about rings or parts not checked against
each other names the actual reason: one of them already has a problem of
its own. The guide says which rings are compared.

Code review

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the prior review threads. The core algorithm is sound on the paths I traced: the sweep, the union-find cycle test, the DE-9IM use, and the work accounting. Most earlier concerns are resolved in the current code. I found one wording bug (posted inline) and several residual risks. Nothing I found is a crash on a reachable path or a silent data loss.

Bugs

  • Wrong detail for a hole that covers the shell: the hole branch in relate_rings discards the area flag from relate and always reports "touch along a line", even when the rings overlap over their whole area. Posted inline on crates/analysis/src/validity.rs:719. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • The sweep's Vec::with_capacity(n_segs) and the two sweep_order index vectors are infallible. With the 3.125M-coordinate budget they can reach roughly 300 MB before any notice. That is outside the browser has_room guard, and an allocation failure in wasm aborts instead of returning an error. This is a residual of the earlier thread, which the author says is addressed; the byte-size angle is new. Confidence: low.
  • In the tool, found builds the detail strings (up to 20 descriptions per feature) before has_room runs, so the browser guard does not cover them. Impact is small. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • In check_geometry.rs, the local rows shadows the rows(...) function it was built from. The problem_field clone-in-loop could be a single unique_field call. Both are for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic!, unsafe, or std::time. Messages use plain format!, which matches the analysis crate's existing convention (no tl! there). Never silent is covered: non-finite rows, the work-limit and relate-failure notices, unrelated parts, extra attribute values, and renamed fields all produce one notice per kind with a count.
  • Panic-safety in the browser: relate wraps geo's Relate in catch_unwind. On wasm32-unknown-unknown (panic=abort) a geo panic would abort the whole app rather than return too_complex. The code's comments acknowledge this and rely on only simple rings being related. That is a residual Never crash risk, not a defect in this PR. Confidence: low.

Prior reviews

  • 5 earlier concerns were already raised: the unrelated notice wording, the output memory bound, the too_complex wording, the sweep allocation before the budget, and the docs ring-comparison condition. All are addressed in the current code, so I left them alone. I did not repeat any of them.

Add a unit test for the relate-failure tally.

The notice test builds Tally values directly, so it does not exercise the code that increments relate_failed. The existing test comment says geo's relate failure cannot be produced on purpose, so run_with_room cannot drive this path deterministically. No test covers the increment. Removing it would leave the test suite passing.

Move the per-feature tally into a helper that takes a validity::Checked. A test can then pass a problem list that contains TooComplex { limit: Limit::Relate }.

Suggested change

Replace the inline tally in run_with_room:

-        tally.found += 1;
-        for code in &codes {
-            if let Some(n) = Code::ALL.iter().position(|c| c == code).and_then(|k| tally.counts.get_mut(k)) {
-                *n += 1;
-            }
-        }
-        let limit = |limit: Limit| checked.problems.contains(&Problem::TooComplex { limit });
-        tally.work_limit += usize::from(limit(Limit::Work));
-        tally.relate_failed += usize::from(limit(Limit::Relate));
+        tally_problems(&mut tally, &checked, &codes);
         tally.extra += usize::from(f.attrs.len() > width);

Add this helper after the Tally struct:

/// Counts a feature with problems by code, and by the work or relate limit it reached.
fn tally_problems(tally: &mut Tally, checked: &validity::Checked, codes: &[Code]) {
    tally.found += 1;
    for code in codes {
        if let Some(n) = Code::ALL.iter().position(|c| c == code).and_then(|k| tally.counts.get_mut(k)) {
            *n += 1;
        }
    }
    let limit = |limit: Limit| checked.problems.contains(&Problem::TooComplex { limit });
    tally.work_limit += usize::from(limit(Limit::Work));
    tally.relate_failed += usize::from(limit(Limit::Relate));
}

Add this test to the tests module:

    #[test]
    fn relate_failure_is_tallied() {
        let checked = validity::Checked {
            problems: vec![Problem::TooComplex { limit: Limit::Relate }],
            ..Default::default()
        };
        let mut tally = Tally::default();

…a feature it had no memory for

Every buffer the checks of one feature grow with its size (ring copies,
segments, the sweep's orders, the maps of contacts, touch points, pairs
of boxes, the cycle test's nodes) and the first pass's rows are now
reserved fallibly. A refused reservation makes the feature too_complex
for lack of memory, with its own notice, never valid, and the checks
that copy nothing still run. The stable sort, which allocated a buffer
as large as the input, is unstable now.

The work-limit detail and notice no longer list crossings and overlaps
as the checks left out: past the limit other checks are skipped too.
A test pins that a hole running along its shell touches it along a
line, as geo's validation says.

Code review

Bugs

  • validity.rs:581 (inline): vertex_checks pushes problems into out.problems for every ring and line part without reserving or charging them. The call also runs for features already over budget, so the list grows with the input, not the budget. The PR says every growing buffer is fallible, and this one isn't. Confidence: medium.

Security

  • None found. Input is bounded by the work charge, nothing is indexed unchecked, and there is no injection or secret handling. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • None found. The sweep counts its pairs exactly and charges them before comparing. The relate shell clones are charged through spend_relate. Confidence: medium-high.

Quality

  • docs/user-guide/analysis.md:851 (inline): repeated_vertex is presented as an OGC rule, but OGC and GEOS don't treat consecutive duplicates as invalid. Confidence: low-medium.
  • The a_hole_along_the_shell_touches_it_along_a_line test pins geo's validation message text, which will break on a geo upgrade. Confidence: medium.
  • check_geometry.rs: problem_field is filled through an out-parameter, and Code::ALL.iter().position runs per code where a direct index would do. The no_memory message says "found so far" but counts the current feature. Nits; left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Checked: no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code (the crate's deny block is in place); no new dependency; format! matches the analysis crate, which has no i18n anywhere; no ribbon or asset changes; the docs and assistant skill are updated; the roadmap item is still marked open, which is a maintainer call.
  • No violations found.

Earlier concerns: I left 9 earlier threads alone. All are resolved, and their fixes are present in the diff (Room, Limit::Memory, the notice rewording, the docs fixes). I agree with the author's reply on the hole-along-shell wording in validity.rs.

This was a read-only review of the diff. I did not run the test suite.

calculation so empty rings and parts count toward the work budget and
`vertex_checks` stops when that budget is exhausted. Aggregate their
`TooFewPoints` diagnostics like `NonFinite` instead of pushing one entry per
empty ring, and reserve `out.problems` fallibly using the existing
error-handling conventions.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

State the 500-epoch limit in the desktop Deep Learning sentence.

The desktop pane sends the typed epoch count unchanged. The engine caps it at 500 even when the work limit is off, so a request above 500 trains fewer epochs than the guide says.

📝 Suggested fix

Code review

No bugs, security problems or crash paths found in the changed code. This is a reading review of the staged diff and head files. The code was not compiled or run, so build and test status rests on CI.

Bugs

  • None confirmed. Traced the sweep's exact pair count against its loop, the union-find cycle test for split interiors, the gating that sends only simple rings to geo's relate, the unrelated and clean flags against their notices, and the charge-before-work ordering. Confidence in "no bugs": about 80%.
  • Low-confidence note (about 15%): on wasm, relate runs without catch_unwind. The PR limits it to simple rings and says the web app already calls geo's Validation on the same shapes, so I see no new exposure.

Security

  • None. Non-finite, unclosed, self-crossing and very large rings are all bounded by the work and memory charges. There is no unsafe, and every unwrap/expect/panic! in the two new source files sits inside a test module. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • None significant. Work is charged for sweep pairs, box pairs, relate calls, touch points and kept pairs, and the sweep's pair count is computed exactly before any comparison. Known trade-off, stated in the PR: a feature at the bound takes about 0.25 s, and cancellation is checked per feature. Confidence: high.

Quality (non-blocking, for the release quality pass)

  1. validity.rs: Seg::lo/hi, sweep_order and boxes_meet pass the axis as a bare bool (y: bool), and sweep_order returns (Vec<usize>, bool, u64). A small Axis enum would read better. Confidence: high that this is readability only.
  2. vertex_checks(…, ring: bool) has the same boolean-parameter pattern, with less value. Confidence: high.
  3. The PR body says "17 integration tests". crates/analysis/tests/check_geometry.rs has 18 #[test] functions. Confidence: high.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. Checked:
    • no unwrap/expect/panic/unsafe in non-test code;
    • notices go through ToolResult::messages, one per kind with counts, and each lossy path has a test;
    • the tool is registered in TOOLS, so the hostile-parameter sweeps cover it;
    • no new dependency;
    • layering holds (analysis uses only rustgis_data);
    • the analysis crate has no translation hooks, so no tl! is needed;
    • docs and SKILL.md are updated;
    • no vendor assets.
  • Low-confidence docs wording (about 40%): docs/user-guide/analysis.md says each output row is the input feature "as stored". Non-finite rows lose their geometry and extra attribute values are dropped. The table and notices do say so, so the paragraph could point to them.

No inline comments: none of the points above needs a line-level change.

Earlier review threads

I left 15 earlier threads alone and raised nothing new. Eight are fixed in this head (verified in the code), three were withdrawn by their reviewer, two were declined with reasons I agree with (the hole-covers-shell wording and the unreserved problem list), and two are deferred to the quality pass (the repeated_vertex OGC wording and the NaN-ring docs).
