Check and Fix Geometry

Overview

Introduce standalone Check Geometry (checkGeometry) and Fix Geometries (fixGeometries) geoprocessing tools to RustGIS under Data Management › Features.

These tools allow users to identify OGC Simple Features Specification (SFS) validity violations, inspect problem coordinates in a structured validation report table, and automatically repair geometries using constrained Delaunay triangulation while preserving all feature attributes, layer CRS, and metadata.

Motivation

The existing topology module provided rule-based topological checks (overlaps, gaps, dangles), but RustGIS lacked a standalone OGC SFS geometry validity and repair workflow comparable to desktop GIS software (Check Validity / Fix Geometries in QGIS and Check Geometry / Repair Geometry in ArcGIS).

Changes

Check Geometry

  • Validates Point, MultiPoint, LineString/Polyline, and Polygon/MultiPolygon features in native coordinate space without projection distortion.
  • Detects self-intersections (bow-ties, loops), unclosed rings, degenerate rings (< 3 distinct vertices), non-finite coordinates, interior holes outside shells, overlapping interior rings, and MultiPolygon component overlaps.
  • Outputs a standalone validation table (<input>_Validation) with fields: feature_id, geometry_type, status (Valid, Invalid, Empty, Null, Unsupported, Error), valid (bool), error_category, error_reason, error_x, and error_y.
  • Emits summary notices detailing total checked features and breakdown by category.

Fix Geometries

  • Implements polygon repair via constrained Delaunay triangulation (Hugo Ledoux et al., 2014).
  • Closes unclosed rings, deduplicates consecutive duplicate vertices, decomposes self-intersecting polygons into valid components, and re-nests holes.
  • Preserves 100% bitwise coordinates for already-valid geometries.
  • Preserves all feature attributes, layer CRS, and metadata in <input>_Fixed.
  • Preserves unrepairable features with their original geometries and emits explicit counted notices.

UI & Documentation

  • Registered in TOOLS under Data Management › Features.
  • Updated ROADMAP.md (moved to Done) and docs/user-guide/analysis.md.
  • Added unit and integration test suites in crates/analysis/src/validity.rs and crates/analysis/tests/check_fix_geometry.rs.

Limitations

  • Collapsed geometries with zero ground area (e.g. collinear segments representing a polygon) cannot produce a 2D surface and are preserved as unrepairable with explicit warnings.
  • Non-finite coordinates (NaN/Inf) cannot be mathematically interpolated and are flagged.

Compatibility

  • Pure Rust, zero unsafe (unsafe_code = "forbid"), no new crate dependencies (geo = "0.33" reused).
  • WebAssembly compatible (wasm32-unknown-unknown).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Check Geometry to identify invalid features, including self-intersections, unclosed rings, invalid holes, and other geometry issues. Reports include issue details and, when available, the problem location.
    • Added Fix Geometries to repair supported invalid geometries. Valid geometries remain unchanged, and attributes and metadata are preserved. Features that cannot be repaired are retained and reported.
    • Both tools are available in Data Management › Features and through gp.run. They process selected features or, when none are selected, all features. Repair results report dropped coordinates or components.

Bugs

  • Exterior ring collapse promotes a hole to the shell, silently (validity.rs:608, high confidence, ~85%). A ring with fewer than 4 points is dropped before fix_polygon builds the polygon. If the exterior is the one dropped, the first surviving hole becomes the exterior, and the result is marked Repaired. An empty MultiPolygon member also makes to_geo_multipolygon return None (validity.rs:120), so Check Geometry reports Error for the whole feature.
  • Check Geometry's error_x/error_y can point at the wrong place (validity.rs:469, medium-high, ~70%). For ring overlaps, the location is the first hole's first vertex, not the overlap. ElementsOverlaps and ElementsTouchOnALine use the first vertex of the first component. error_reason also contains Rust Debug text (Interior(2)).

Security

  • No findings. The change is pure geometry with no I/O, unsafe code, or new dependencies.

Performance

  • No significant findings. Minor: make_valid on one very large feature cannot be cancelled, because cancellation is checked per feature.

Quality

  • Silent non-finite vertex removal (validity.rs:596, high confidence, ~85%). NaN or Inf vertices are filtered in polygon, line and multipoint repair (lines 540, 556, 596). The feature is reported only in the Repaired count. The docs say non-finite coordinates are flagged and kept. Points with NaN fail, so the behaviour is inconsistent. fix_multipoint on an empty MultiPoint also says "all points were non-finite" (line 542).
  • Test asserts nothing (validity.rs:976, high confidence). test_consecutive_duplicate_vertices_repair passes on Unchanged without any assertion. Valid input is never deduplicated, so the docs' claim about duplicate removal only holds on the invalid path.
  • Quality nits, left for the release quality pass: ValidityStatus::Unsupported and FixOutcome::Skipped are never constructed. ValidationRecord.valid duplicates status. fix_geometries copies metadata by hand and skips the shared converted_dataset, require_schema and finish helpers in crates/analysis/src/tools/geometry.rs. The area threshold 1e-14 (line 626) is absolute and depends on coordinate scale.

AGENTS.md

  • Never-silent rule: the silent drops above break it (lines 596, 608).
  • Test-both-ways rule: no test checks that lossy input gives the notice, or that clean input gives none. Existing tests only check messages[0].
  • Screenshots (medium confidence): the new tools appear in the Tools pane, which is a visible change. The PR body has no before/after or new-UI screenshot, as the "Looking at the app" section requires.
  • Compliant: no unwrap/panic in non-test code, no unsafe, no new dependencies, wasm-safe, ROADMAP and docs updated, and the tools are registered in TOOLS.

Already raised: 0 earlier concerns, since there were no prior review threads.

Code review

Three new findings are posted inline. Four earlier threads on this PR are still open. I left those alone, because the code they point at has not changed and their concerns still stand.

Bugs

  • False "Self-Intersection" on large valid rings. self_crossing returns the ring's first vertex when its work budget runs out, so a valid ring can be reported as invalid, and the fix path then rewrites it. Confidence ~60%. Inline at validity.rs:347.
  • Line self-intersections are not checked. validate_line never calls self_crossing, but the PR body and docs say Polyline self-intersections are detected. Confidence ~80%. Inline at validity.rs:225.

Security

  • None found.

Performance

  • Minor: validate_polygon and validate_line clone rings and parts just to deduplicate and count them, and fix_polygon validates a feature and then repeats the work in its pre-clean pass. Not worth a comment on its own.

Quality

  • Test coverage gap: no test covers a multi-part line where one part collapses. Covered in the inline note at validity.rs:565.
  • Wording: fix_geometries reports null-geometry features as "skipped", though they are kept in the output. The message suggests they were dropped. Confidence ~90%.
  • Wording: the docs list Unsupported as a status value, but nothing produces it. Confidence ~90%.

Silent data handling

  • Silent removal of line parts and zero-area pieces. A degenerate line part is dropped, and make_valid discards zero-area pieces, while the feature is still counted only as Repaired. Confidence ~70%. Inline at validity.rs:565.

AGENTS.md

  • The PR's screenshots are hosted on iili.io. docs/contributing.md asks for GitHub web attachments or the rustgis-assets repo. Confidence ~50%, since the rule is about PR attachments rather than code.
  • The crate's tools use plain format! for messages, so the i18n rule does not apply here.

Earlier concerns left alone: 4 threads. They cover the rings-promoted-to-shell bug, the silent non-finite vertex filter and the empty-MultiPoint message, the IntersectingRingsOnAnArea location and Debug formatting in reasons, and the tautological duplicate-vertex test with its quality notes.

I could not compile or run the tests in this environment, so these findings come from reading the code.

Cancel is checked only between features, so a long repair delays Cancel.

fix_geometries checks for cancellation at the start of each feature. fix_polygon then calls input_mp.make_valid() once for the whole feature, and nothing in that call checks the cancel flag. A feature with a very complex polygon can keep the run active after Cancel is pressed. The run returns the cancellation error only after that call returns.

This matches the between-feature check model in control::check(). The delay is a responsiveness limit. The repository sets no latency bound for Cancel, and this delay has not been measured.

If Cancel must take effect during a feature, run the repair on a worker thread. Have the tool thread wait with a timeout and call control::check() between waits. On cancellation, return the error and drop the worker's result. The worker continues until make_valid returns, so this shortens the wait for the user but does not stop the CPU work. The run's control is installed only on the tool thread, so the worker cannot call control::check().

Key the test fixture's selection by layer name.

TestLayer::selection returns self.selected for every layer name, so the fixture masks the key that checkGeometry passes. A regression that looks up the wrong key still receives [1], and test_selection_filtering still passes. Return the selection only when the requested name matches the layer. Other names then return an empty selection, which makes checkGeometry return every row. The existing length assertion catches that.

Assert the preserved geometry in the unrepairable-point test.

The test comment says the original geometry is kept. The assertions do not check the geometry, so a change that writes a different geometry at validity.rs:791 would still pass. Geometry and Coord derive PartialEq, and NaN never equals itself, so compare the coordinate bits instead:

Code review

I posted four inline comments and found no further new issues. I read the full diff, the prior threads, and the surrounding topology.rs code. I did not build or run the tests; the one shell call I made was a line count of the staged files.

Bugs

  • Notices count features that were kept intact (validity.rs ~999, confidence ~85%). Dropped-vertex and dropped-part stats are added before the outcome match, so a Failed feature still reports drops even though its original geometry is written back. No test covers lossy input that also fails.
  • Wrong polygon indices in overlap and touch messages (validity.rs ~156, confidence ~75%). to_geo_multipolygon skips empty components, so geo indices no longer match polys when such a component is present.
  • Polylines that touch or overlap themselves pass as Valid (validity.rs ~309, confidence ~60%). Adjacent segments are skipped, and parallel segments and endpoint touches are ignored.

Security

  • None found. The new code has no unsafe blocks or unwraps in non-test code, and its indexing uses get().

Performance

  • Unbounded all-pairs scan on hostile input (validity.rs ~138, confidence ~70%). find_rings_intersection has no work budget and can take billions of segment tests on large overlapping rings. Cancellation is only checked between features.
  • Repeated allocations (confidence ~40%). validate_line and validate_polygon clone rings just to count distinct points, and a valid polygon is validated twice on the fix path.

Quality

  • The role-to-label and index mapping is repeated three times in interpret_geo_multipolygon_error, and the two ElementsOverlaps/ElementsTouchOnALine arms are near-duplicates.
  • ValidityStatus::Unsupported, FixOutcome::Skipped (partly), and ValidityCategory::UnsupportedType are never constructed, and the docs list Unsupported as a status.
  • Error (budget exceeded) is counted as "invalid" in the Check summary.
  • fix_geometries lists only the first five failure reasons without saying how many were omitted.

These are left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Lossy-input notices and the no-panic rules are followed for the paths I checked. The gap above (failed features reported as dropped) breaks the "Never silent" rule's accuracy requirement.
  • The Ledoux citation and the no-new-dependency claim are consistent with the diff.

Prior threads

I left 9 earlier concerns alone because they were already raised and the code they point at has not materially changed: empty-ring classification, geometry-free input rejection, empty MultiPolygon components, non-finite handling in line, polygon, and multipoint repair, the IntersectingRings error location, silent zero-area pieces from make_valid, and the quality points.
Some earlier threads appear addressed by this push and may be resolvable: line self-intersection (now checked in validate_line), line-part drops (now counted), empty-MultiPoint Skipped, and the assertion-free duplicate test (now asserts equality).

Bugs

  • Valid polylines with repeated vertices are rewritten and reported as Repaired (confidence ~85%). fix_line_with_stats has no validity fast path, so a valid line such as [A, A, B] goes through dedup(), is marked modified, and is counted as Repaired. This contradicts the "already-valid geometries keep bitwise coordinates" promise and disagrees with Check Geometry, which reports the same line Valid. The polygon path avoids this with its validate_polygon fast path. Inline comment posted on crates/analysis/src/validity.rs:707 with a suggested fix and a test to add.

Security

  • None found. The new code has no unsafe, indexing is done with get(), and the test-only unwrap calls are permitted by clippy.toml.

Performance

  • None new. The unbounded all-pairs scan in find_rings_intersection is still present; it was raised earlier.

Quality (left for the release quality pass)

  • fix_geometries caps failure details at five and never says how many were omitted. The totals are still in the summary, so this is minor, but "and N more" would meet the never-silent rule (confidence ~60%).
  • interpret_geo_multipolygon_error repeats the same RingRole label and index matching in three places. ring_role_label and ring_role_index already exist for this.
  • The docs and PR body present the repair as the Ledoux constrained-Delaunay method, but the code calls geo's MakeValid::make_valid. Please confirm the citation matches what geo implements (confidence ~40%; I could not check the dependency offline).

AGENTS.md

  • Crash rules are met: no unsafe, no non-test unwrap/expect/panic, and the hostile-parameter tests cover the new tools automatically.
  • Never-silent is mostly met: dropped non-finite vertices, line parts, holes and components are counted and reported. The valid-polyline case above also changes data without a notice.
  • The fixGeometries standalone-table rejection now matches the erase pattern.

Earlier review threads: 16 threads are on this PR. Eight concerns are answered by the current code and were not re-raised. Eight concerns are still present and already raised, so I left them alone: the stats counted for failed features, the error index mismatch, the all-pairs ring scan, polyline spikes and touches passing as valid, the error location and Debug text, empty polygon components, non-finite repair (fix_line and fix_polygon), and the zero-area make_valid pieces.

Code review

I reviewed the full diff by reading it; I could not compile or run the tests (no shell). Three new inline comments are posted, and the rest of the findings are below.

Bugs

  • Processing errors counted as invalid. checkGeometry counts Error results (work budget exceeded, or the geometry could not be built) in the "invalid" total, so the summary can say "N invalid" for a feature that was never fully checked. Inline comment posted. Confidence ~75%.
  • make_valid output not counted. Repair counts dropped rings, holes and components before make_valid, but nothing counts what make_valid removes afterwards (zero-area pieces, a hole that ends up outside the shell). This re-raises the resolved thread on fix_polygon, because the author's reply covers only the pre-clean drops. Inline comment posted. Confidence ~50%.
  • Standalone table accepted by checkGeometry. fixGeometries rejects tables with no geometry, but checkGeometry does not, and reports every row as "Null / Missing Geometry". Inline comment with a suggestion posted. Confidence ~55%.
  • Failed repair notice lists five details without saying more were cut. fix_geometries caps failure details at five and does not say how many were omitted. Low severity; not posted inline.
  • Possible windowed gap. The new tools ignore Dataset::windowed, so on a windowed layer they would process only the features in view. attribute_join rejects windowed inputs; the new tools do not. Confidence ~35%; not posted.

Security

  • None found. The diff adds no I/O, no new dependencies and no unsafe.

Performance

  • fix_line_with_stats runs the self-crossing check twice, and validate_line clones each part. Negligible; not raised.

Quality

  • validity.rs duplicates the s, input, rows and out_name helpers from tools.rs. tools.rs already has selected_rows, and converted_dataset covers the metadata copy. Left for the release quality pass.
  • ValidityStatus::Unsupported and FixOutcome::Skipped are never constructed (already raised).
  • The area threshold 1e-14 is absolute, so it is scale-dependent. Low confidence.

AGENTS.md

  • Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic!, unreachable!, todo! or indexing. The matches are in the test module, which allow-unwrap-in-tests covers.
  • No new dependencies. std::time is not used, so wasm is unaffected.
  • The Never silent rule is mostly followed, apart from the make_valid gap and the error-count issue above.

Prior reviews

  • I left 16 earlier concerns alone: they are fixed in the code, or still open and documented (the polyline touch/overlap gap, which the docs now describe as intended). I re-raised one: the make_valid gap on the resolved fix_polygon thread.

Return the cleaned polygon when it already validates.

When an exterior ring is unclosed, the pre-clean step closes it. The closed ring still goes to make_valid(). That repair snaps vertices within an absolute 1e-4 native-unit radius. A closed ring smaller than about 1e-4 units collapses to zero edges and an empty result. The code then returns Failed, and the original, unclosed geometry is kept. In degree-based data, 1e-4 is about 11 m, so small valid features can reach this path.

Return the cleaned geometry before triangulation when it already validates:

Suggested fix
     let input_mp = geo::MultiPolygon::new(cleaned_polys);

Assert the repair outcome in the lossy polygon test.

The lossy polygon assertions check only the drop notices. The runner records the drop statistics before it matches on the repair outcome. A failed repair therefore still emits both notices, so this test does not detect a repair failure for this input. The summary message reports the repair outcome for the feature. For this fixture it reports 0 failed.

Suggested fix
     let all_poly_msgs = poly_res.messages.join("\n");
+    assert!(poly_res.messages[0].contains("0 failed"));
     assert!(all_poly_msgs.contains("1 non-finite coordinate(s) dropped across 1 feature(s)."));

Compare the full polygon in the collapsed-exterior test.

The assertion checks only the first coordinate of the exterior ring. The output still passes that check if the failed repair keeps only the collapsed exterior ring, because that ring also starts at (0.0, 0.0). A regression that drops the hole would not fail this test. The sibling self-intersection test compares the full output geometry, so this test can use the same pattern.

Bugs

  • fix_line_with_stats returns Unchanged for invalid polylines with a vertex self-touch (validity.rs:816, posted inline). validate_line rejects [A, B, A] and [A, B, C, B, D], but the crossing sweep skips adjacent segments and ignores endpoint touches. The fix returns Unchanged, so the invalid geometry is written out and counted as unchanged. Expected: Failed, with the original kept and counted. Confidence ~85%. The suggested fix is inline.
  • Multipart polylines: crossings between parts are not checked. validate_line and fix_line only test each part against itself, so two parts that cross pass as Valid. Confidence ~40%. This depends on whether the OGC MultiCurve rule is wanted here.

Security

  • No issues found. The changes do no file or network I/O and no unsafe code, and the non-test code uses get() throughout.

Performance

  • Each feature is validated twice in the fix path (validate_* then the repair loop), and the polygon path runs geo's check_validation and then make_valid. Bounded, but redundant. Confidence ~50%.
  • The work budgets are per call, and geo::check_validation and make_valid have no budget at all. Cancellation is only checked between features, so one hostile polygon could still run long. Confidence ~30%.

Quality

  • Nothing new beyond the quality points already raised in the existing threads (valid duplicates status, ValidityStatus::Unsupported is never constructed, the hand-copied dataset metadata, the 1e-14 threshold). Those are left for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Checked: no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, no new dependencies, no assets, tool labels follow the existing plain-string convention, and both lossy-input and clean-input notice tests exist. The one gap is the missing regression test for the spike/loop fix path (see the inline comment).

Earlier review threads: 24 threads on the PR. I left 7 open ones alone because the code they point at has not changed and the problem still stands. Those are: silent loss of pieces in make_valid, the standalone-table check, the find_rings_intersection fallback location, the first-vertex fallback in self-crossing, Skipped writing a null geometry, the hole-outside-shell location, and the Error-count thread (already addressed by the error_count split). I did not re-raise any of the resolved threads.

Bugs

  • Crossings between parts of a multi-part Polyline are not detected, so Check reports Valid and Fix returns Unchanged (confidence ~70%). Inline comment posted at validity.rs:499.
  • Notice counts for polygon repair over-report drops when make_valid merges components or reassigns holes (confidence ~55%). Inline comment posted at validity.rs:941.
  • Re-raise, partly still open: when two rings overlap collinearly and share no vertex, find_rings_intersection still falls back to ring2.first(), so the reported location is wrong. The shared-vertex change only covers coincident endpoints (confidence ~60%). This was raised on validity.rs:148 and marked resolved, so it is new only as a note.

Security

  • None found. Non-finite input is filtered before the self-crossing sweep, and no unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe appears in non-test code.

Performance

  • None new. The per-call budgets (MAX_WORK, MAX_INTERSECTION_WORK) bound each check. Cancellation is still checked only between features, which was raised earlier.

Quality

  • None new that is not already in the prior threads. The validity.rs:832 thread is still open, but the clean_val check at lines 827–830 now returns Failed for spikes and loops, so it looks addressed and needs a reply.

AGENTS.md

  • GEOLIBRE_PARITY.md lists "fix/check geometry" as an open item (lines 179–180). CONTRIBUTING.md says a PR that lands a roadmap item must update that file in the same change. This PR does not (confidence ~80%). It is not in the diff, so it is noted here instead of inline. The item needs to drop "fix/check geometry" from its list.
  • The PR body hosts its screenshots on iili.io. AGENTS.md says images live in opengeos/rustgis-assets and are served from assets.rustgis.app (confidence ~60%). This is in the description, not the repo.

Already raised (left alone): 24 earlier threads. I did not repeat them, and I count the validity.rs:148 note above as the one partial re-raise.

Bug, unbounded work in the cross-part vertex check (confidence ~80%). The MAX_INTERPART_WORK budget only counts segment pairs (work += 1 at line 485). This nested for ci in part_i × for cj in part_j loop does not count toward it, so two bbox-overlapping parts with n and m vertices cost n·m Coord comparisons with no cap. Two 50k-vertex parts are about 2.5e9 comparisons, and the work only stops between features. Check Geometry and the Fix fast path both reach this code, so one hostile feature can hang the run.

Suggested fix: count these comparisons against the same budget, or replace the scan with a lookup. For example, collect the interior vertices of part_j into a HashSet keyed on (x.to_bits(), y.to_bits()) (normalising -0.0, as the self-touch check above does), then test each vertex of part_i against it. That gives O(n + m) per part pair. A regression test with two large overlapping parts should assert that the result is Error/ProcessingError or a valid answer, not a hang.

Notice wording is wrong for holes that were not degenerate (confidence ~70%). total_dropped_holes also counts holes that make_valid removes at line 1044 (in_holes - out_holes). Those include a hole outside the shell, which test_hole_outside_shell_and_repair exercises, and a hole that is merged into another piece. Neither is "degenerate", so the notice says the wrong thing. Under "Never silent" the notice has to say what happened. The component notice was already reworded to "merged or dropped by repair" for this reason, and the hole notice needs the same change.

Suggested wording, matching the component notice:

Suggested change
"{total_dropped_holes} degenerate interior ring(s) (holes) dropped across {features_with_dropped_holes} feature(s)."
"{total_dropped_holes} interior ring(s) (holes) removed by repair across {features_with_dropped_holes} feature(s)."

The assertion at crates/analysis/tests/check_fix_geometry.rs (the degenerate interior ring(s) (holes) dropped check in test_lossy_notices_and_clean_notices) needs updating too. Add a case where the hole lies outside the shell and assert the new wording.

Bugs

  • Cross-part vertex check in validate_line is unbudgeted (crates/analysis/src/validity.rs:457-466). The nested vertex loop never increments work, so two large overlapping parts cost n·m comparisons, and the run only checks cancellation between features. Confidence ~80%. Inline comment posted.
  • Hole notice says "degenerate" for holes that make_valid removed, including holes outside the shell and holes merged into another piece (validity.rs:1275). This is the wrong description under "Never silent". Confidence ~70%. Inline comment posted.
  • fix_polygon_with_stats never re-validates its Repaired output, unlike fix_line_with_stats, which re-checks with clean_val. A repaired polygon that still fails Check would be reported as repaired. Confidence ~35%.

Security

  • No issues found. The changes contain no unsafe, no unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code, and no new dependencies. The new tools are covered by the existing TOOLS hostile-parameter sweep.

Performance

  • The unbudgeted vertex loop above is the main concern.
  • check_self_crossing allows 50M pair tests per call, and validation can run several times per feature (Check, the Fix fast path, and error interpretation). Hostile large inputs will be slow. Confidence ~40%.

Quality

  • Empty features get valid = false, though OGC treats empty geometries as valid. Confidence ~50%.
  • The dropped non-finite-coordinate notices give counts but do not name features, unlike the failed-repair notice, which lists feature IDs. AGENTS asks for "how much and where". Confidence ~45%.
  • Left for the release quality pass: validity.rs is about 1,600 lines. ValidityStatus::Unsupported is never constructed. fix_geometries copies dataset metadata by hand, without the converted_dataset helper. These were raised in an earlier thread.

AGENTS.md

  • Checked the notices, the "Never crash" rules, the layering and the wasm constraints. No violations found beyond the notice wording above. The geo dependency is already declared in crates/analysis/Cargo.toml.

Already raised, left alone

  • 27 earlier threads were left alone: 24 resolved or answered, and 3 open ones that the code now addresses or that are documented. These include the cross-part crossing check (addressed in 231d81c), the polyline spike and loop handling (now Failed through clean_val), the empty-component, empty-polygon and multipoint handling, and the budget and error-location fixes.

Report a location for ring self-touches when one can be identified.

When a ring is reported as self-intersecting but check_self_crossing returns CrossingCheck::None, the _ => None arm leaves error_location empty. The report then writes null error_x and error_y. Vertex-only contacts can produce this result. The documentation describes these columns as the issue location, so this error can report a location when the contact point is known.

This change is optional. It affects only the coordinates of this error. The status and reason do not change.

If the change is made:

  • Search only for contacts between nonadjacent vertices. Exclude the closing vertex of a closed ring. Ignore consecutive repeats, because they are not self-touches.
  • Compare coordinates by numeric value, so -0.0 and 0.0 match.
  • Use a bounded scan, such as one hash-based pass, rather than a pairwise scan of the ring.
  • Keep the location None when no contact point is found. Do not fall back to the first vertex. A T-touch or a collinear overlap can produce this result with no repeated vertex.

In the ring self-intersection location flow around check_self_crossing, when it
returns CrossingCheck::None, optionally find a repeated vertex and use its
coordinates as error_location. Use a bounded hash-based scan comparing numeric
coordinate values; exclude a closed ring’s closing vertex and ignore consecutive
repeats. Keep error_location unset when no qualifying contact is found, without
changing the error’s status or reason.

Add a valid-polygon case that has an empty component.

The new test at crates/analysis/src/validity.rs:1587 covers an empty component only with two overlapping squares. Its assertions check an invalid result. No test covers a polygon that pairs an empty component with one valid square. The validator returns Valid for that input. A change that makes an empty component affect valid input would not fail the current tests. Add a test that asserts the validation status:

#[test]
fn test_empty_component_beside_valid_polygon_is_valid() {
    let square = vec![Coord::new(0.0, 0.0), Coord::new(10.0, 0.0), Coord::new(10.0, 10.0), Coord::new(0.0, 10.0), Coord::new(0.0, 0.0)];
    let mp = Geometry::Polygon(vec![vec![], vec![square]]);
    let rec = validate_geometry(Some(&mp), 1, GeometryType::Polygon);
    assert_eq!(rec.status, ValidityStatus::Valid);
}

Place the test after test_empty_component_does_not_shift_multipolygon_error_indices. The fix path returns the input unchanged for this valid input, so the test can also assert the unchanged fix outcome.

This finding is a coverage improvement for currently working behavior. It is not a functional defect.

Return a point on the overlapping edge for ring-overlap error locations.

When two rings overlap along a collinear edge without a shared endpoint, find_rings_intersection returns the first vertex of the second ring. check_geometry writes that vertex to error_x and error_y. The vertex can lie far from the overlap. Return a point on the overlapping segment instead, so the reported location matches the documented meaning of error_x and error_y.

Count components lost during repair separately from components created by splitting.

dropped_components and dropped_holes use the net difference between input and output counts after make_valid. A feature can contain a zero-area exterior that repair removes and a self-crossing exterior that repair splits into two components. In that case the input and output counts both equal 2. dropped_components stays at 0, and the "polygon component(s) merged or dropped by repair" notice is not emitted. The loss has no area, but the notice does not report it.

The count needs to reflect removals per input component, not the net total. Add a regression test for a MultiPolygon that contains a collinear zero-area exterior and a bowtie exterior. The test should assert that dropped_components is at least 1.

Attribute the line-crossing check to the tool, not to SFS.

The sentence at line 838 says the tool detects validity issues "according to the OGC Simple Features Specification (SFS)." The tool also reports self-crossing LineStrings as Invalid. SFS 1.2.1 does not define that status for curves. It defines only simplicity (IsSimple) and lists a non-simple LineString as a LineString. Reword the sentence so the line-crossing rule is described as a tool-specific check beyond SFS simplicity.

Performance, the work budget resets for every ring (confidence ~35%). check_self_crossing gets a fresh MAX_WORK (50M pair tests) on each call, and this loop calls it once per ring of every polygon. A feature with many large rings therefore costs up to about (rings × 50M) pair tests, not 50M. For example, 7k-vertex rings reach the budget in each call, so about 140 such rings in one feature come to roughly 7e9 tests. Cancellation is only checked between features (crate::control::cancelled() in check_geometry and fix_geometries), so the run cannot be stopped inside that feature.

This is separate from the existing threads on the cross-part and find_rings_intersection budgets. Those cover per-call limits, not the total across rings.

Possible fix: pass one shared work counter into a check_self_crossing-style helper so the budget covers the whole feature, and return ProcessingError / Failed once it runs out. A test with many medium-sized rings should assert that it finishes with Error, or with a valid result, within the budget.

Code review

Most of the substantive issues in this PR were already raised in earlier threads. I checked the current head against those threads and added one new concern. I did not run the tests or the build, because this environment has no shell.

Bugs

  • No new bugs found. Earlier concerns about lossy notices, hole and component counts, and the cross-part vertex scan still apply to the current code (see "Already raised" below).

Security

  • No findings. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe, and indexing goes through get().

Performance

  • New, inline: validity.rs:599. The 50M work budget in check_self_crossing applies to each call, and validate_polygon calls it once per ring. A feature with many large rings can therefore do far more than 50M tests in total, and cancellation is checked only between features. Confidence ~35%.

Quality

  • Nothing new that needs an inline comment. The quality points in the earlier threads are already marked for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • Screenshots: the PR body links to images on iili.io. AGENTS.md says images live in opengeos/rustgis-assets, and docs/contributing.md (around line 263) says GitHub web attachments are fine for PR screenshots. Neither covers a third-party host, so the images should be re-attached. Confidence ~80%. This is in the PR body, so it cannot be an inline comment.
  • Process: the Check/Fix Geometry item was listed as open on the roadmap, so it could be picked up without prior coordination.
  • Layering, wasm, asset attribution, and the test requirements look consistent with AGENTS.md.

Already raised (left alone)

I left 26 earlier threads alone. Of these, 9 are still unresolved and not outdated: the unbounded cross-part vertex scan (validity.rs ~460), the hole notice wording (~1275), the ring-overlap error location (~198), the net component/hole counts (~1045), the SFS wording in the docs (~838), and the line-touch gap (~309). The rest are resolved or outdated.

Change size

Compared with main (merge base a5da952 to PR head 231d81c). Sizes are file sizes in bytes, not line counts.
