feat(ui): Export Features and Export Raster write their file in the background (#1291 step 3) - #1433
Part of #1291 step 3 (tracked in #1252's UI-thread list): Export Features and Export Raster stop blocking the UI thread.
What changes for the user
On the desktop, Export Features (share.exportLayer) and Export Raster (share.exportRaster) read their inputs when the export starts, then write the file on a thread of their own. While one runs, the status bar shows its name, a progress bar and Cancel. When it ends, its messages are the ones the command gave before. One export runs at a time.
A cancelled export leaves no file, and a file it was to replace stays as it was. A Cancel that comes once the file is in place doesn't undo it: the export is reported as written.
It lands whatever layer is active or project is open by then. The file is written either way, and an export changes nothing in the project.
Export Map and the layout exports still run where they're called. They draw the map and wait for its tiles, so they need a copy of the project to draw on; that is the next PR.
Changes
rustgis_data::progress (new): a thread-local Probe with begin / step / check, and DataError::Cancelled. With no probe installed, as for a script or the web app, the writers only run.
The writers count and stop:
GeoJSON, CSV, FlatGeobuf, GeoPackage, Shapefile and the reprojection pass, per feature;
GeoParquet, per row group;
KML/GPX are checked after the document is built, so a cut-short one is never written;
the chunked export of a streamed layer, per feature (total from the source's count, or unknown);
COG, per tile;
untiled GeoTIFF stops on cancel through its output but shows no percentage: tiff compresses inside write_data, so strips can't be counted.
analysis::control::Control is a Probe, installed by run_under, so one Cancel and one progress count reach both tools and exports.
cmd/exports.rs (new): an IN_BACKGROUND table as in workflows.rs; export_start reads the session, ExportRun::run writes the file, and export_land says what was written. share.rs and raster.rs split each export into what it reads (the layer clone is cheap: features and pixels are shared) and the writing.
ui-egui/src/exportjob.rs (new): start, land each frame, and the status-bar row.
The user guide's sharing page describes background exports.
Tests
a_cancelled_export_leaves_no_file (data): 3,000 points, cancelled after 100 items, in all eight vector formats. Each returns Cancelled and leaves the directory empty; without a probe all are written.
a_cancelled_raster_write_stops (data): a COG cancelled after 2 tiles leaves no file; the GeoTIFF write stops too.
exports_run_on_another_thread (engine): GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage in EPSG:3857, GeoTIFF and COG, each written on a thread and here. They have the same bytes (a GeoPackage: the same features), the same answer and the same messages, and nothing is said before the export lands. A run cancelled before it starts writes nothing, and bad inputs are refused at start.
export_features_writes_on_a_thread_and_lands (ui): through the dialog's path. A second export is refused while the first runs, and the first lands with another layer active.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Desktop layer and raster exports run in the background, keeping the map and window usable. The status bar shows progress when available and provides a Cancel control; untiled GeoTIFF exports do not show a progress bar.
Only one background export can run at a time. Cancelling an unfinished export prevents it from creating a file or replacing an existing one.
Data exports report progress and respond to cancellation. Exports started from scripts, models, the AI Assistant, command line, or map and layout tools still wait for completion.
Documentation
Updated the sharing guide with details about background exports, progress, and cancellation.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Layer and raster exports now report progress and support cancellation. The engine coordinates export work and results. Native desktop exports run in the background with status and cancellation controls. WebAssembly exports remain synchronous.

Summary
Progress and cancellation contract crates/data/src/{lib.rs,progress.rs}, crates/analysis/src/{control.rs,lib.rs}
The data crate adds a thread-local progress probe and a cancellation error. Analysis control installs the probe while work runs.
Progress-aware data writers crates/data/src/{export.rs,interop.rs,io.rs}, crates/data/src/raster/{cogwrite.rs,geotiff.rs}, crates/data/src/source/{fgb.rs,gpkg.rs,parquet.rs}, crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs
Export writers report progress or check cancellation. Staged and atomic exports check cancellation before replacing destinations. KML and GPX conversion propagates exporter errors. Tests cover cancellation and output behavior.
The engine prepares layer and raster export work, runs it synchronously or under background control, and delivers results and notices. Tests cover background execution, cancellation, and output behavior.
Native desktop exports run as background jobs with progress and cancellation status. The UI polls for completion and stops active work during shutdown. The guide describes which exports remain synchronous.

I read the full diff, the base-branch AGENTS.md, and the surrounding code (Session::run, run_under, the chunked export sources, the raster writers). There were no prior review threads, so no concerns were left out as already raised. I could not compile or run tests here, so the build, cargo xtask ci, and the wasm build are unverified.
Bugs
Background export skips Session::run (medium). The UI path calls exports::export_start directly. The export is no longer written to the project command log (when logging is on), and the input-reading step has no panic guard. Only the worker thread is wrapped in catch_unwind. Posted inline at crates/ui-egui/src/exportjob.rs:34.
Writers feed the tool progress count (low).run_under now installs the data probe for every tool. Any tool that calls a data writer would have its progress reset or advanced by the writer's steps. The grep found no analysis-crate caller today, so this is latent.
Security
None found. Error text from the background path goes through Session::notify, which redacts it, so there is no leak relative to the synchronous path.
Performance
None found. Layer clones are cheap because Features is Arc-backed, as the PR says. Writers have no worker threads, so the thread-local probe reaches every step.
Quality
Nit (low): the exports_run_on_another_thread test writes into a temp directory and cleans up only at the end. A failing assertion leaves the directory behind.
Nit (low):workflows.rs:1113–1122 (convert) calls to_kml / to_gpx and writes the output without a cancel check. to_kml / to_gpx now stop early on cancel, so that output would be truncated if convert ever ran under a probe. It does not today, so I did not post it inline.
AGENTS.md
Missing screenshots (high). The status-bar progress and Cancel row is new visible UI. AGENTS.md requires an "after" screenshot in the PR, and the PR body has none.
The rest of the diff checks out against the rules I could verify: no unwrap/expect in non-test code, #[cfg] guards on the wasm paths, tl! used for the new labels, and sharing.md updated.
Confidence: the bypass finding is medium; the screenshot finding is high; the rest are low.
Change size
Compared with main (merge base b8a9879 to PR head a38c263), the whole PR.
Add a cancelled-export case that starts from an existing destination.
a_cancelled_export_leaves_no_file starts every format from a missing file. A change that deletes or alters an existing destination before cancellation would not fail this test. The PR description says a cancelled export keeps any file it was to replace. GeoPackage refuses an existing destination before any write begins, so this case excludes it. The new loop uses its own format list and does not depend on exts.
Suggested test addition

Extend a_cancelled_export_leaves_no_file with a separate case for formats that
replace existing destinations, excluding GeoPackage. Write known contents to
each destination before calling write_path_in with a cancellation probe, then
assert cancellation and verify the original contents remain unchanged.
Cover cancellation after the GeoTIFF encoder has started writing.
The GeoTIFF assertion at cogwrite.rs:1020-1022 cancels before the first output write. A writer that checks cancellation only on that first write still returns DataError::Cancelled, so the test passes. Counted::cancelling_after(n) cannot cover this case for GeoTIFF, because GeoTIFF encoding never calls advance. Use a probe that allows the first write and cancels the next one.

Closing the window mid-export abandons the export thread silently. Its JoinHandle is dropped, so the process exits without running destructors. The hidden temp file beside the destination is left, and the user gets no notice. The destination is untouched. Confidence: medium. (inline: exportjob.rs:36)
A GeoPackage redo overcounts progress on the non-streamed path. The bar reads 100% before the write finishes, and a Cancel in the second pass reports "100% of the way through". Confidence: about 70%. Cosmetic. (inline: io.rs:525)
Security
None found.
Performance
None found. The per-feature progress::step and per-write check are thread-local reads plus an atomic, which is negligible.
Quality
Nothing blocking. The notes below are grouped as nits for the release quality pass.
exports::export_start takes &mut Session but only reads it. The caller's &mut app.session is therefore unnecessary.
start uses tl_raw!(job.name) while status uses tl!(job.name) for the same name. The difference may be intentional; if not, align them.
In exports.rs, the #[cfg(not(target_arch = "wasm32"))] attribute sits above the doc comment. Style only.
AGENTS.md
interop::to_kml and to_gpx (interop.rs:66) return a truncated document on cancel with no error. This goes against "Never silent". It is not reachable today because callers check or discard the result, so confidence is about 55%.
Checked and compliant: no unwrap/expect in non-test code, no unsafe, tl! used for interface text, wasm gating in exportjob, chrome, and lib.rs, and no layering violations found.
Test coverage
The cancel tests cover write_path_in and the engine export paths. I found no test for a cancelled streamed export through write_chunks_in. Its writers do check before rename, so this is a gap in coverage, not a known defect.
Prior review threads: 7 threads (exportjob.rs:34, io.rs:534, cogwrite.rs:565, gpkg.rs:830, raster.rs:911, share.rs:113, chrome.rs:347). I checked each fix in the diff and left them alone. The chrome.rs backstage point was declined by the author and I did not re-raise it. I left 7 concerns unraised for this reason.
Verification limits: I had no Bash, so I did not compile or run tests. The review is from reading the diff and the surrounding source.

Add a COG test that cancels after the last tile, with an existing destination.
The cancellation test for write_file cancels during tile writing, before the progress check after sync_all. Removing that check would not fail any test. A regression would then replace an existing COG with a file from a cancelled write.
Add a case that counts every tile step and cancels on the final check. Create an existing file at path with known bytes. Run write_file with a probe that cancels after the total tile count. Assert that the call returns DataError::Cancelled and that the bytes at path are unchanged.

The export thread in exportjob.rs doesn't carry the session's diagnostics capture. Network reads a streamed layer makes during its write lose their records. The Zarr-summary and trend threads already capture (posted inline). Confidence: medium-high.
The untiled GeoTIFF and the cancel-after-commit path behave as documented, and I found no further correctness defects in the cancel or rollback logic. Shapefile rollback, COG, GeoPackage and Parquet commit points check out. Confidence in that: medium-high, from reading only; nothing was compiled or run here.
Security
None found in the changed code.
Performance
None significant. Features is Arc-backed, so cloning a layer at export start is cheap. The per-feature progress::step and per-write check are negligible. Confidence: high.
Quality (nits, for the release quality pass)
exports::export_start takes &mut Session but only needs &Session.
In exports.rs, the #[cfg] attribute sits above the doc comment on ExportRun. Doc-then-attribute is the usual order.
projected_bytes and write_path_in both call progress::begin for the same dataset. Harmless, but redundant. Confidence: high for all three.
AGENTS.md
The PR description has no screenshots, but the change adds a visible status-bar row. AGENTS.md asks for an "after" screenshot for new UI (docs/contributing.md#documentation). Confidence: high.

The shutdown check can pass when stop skips cancel. If the GeoJSON export finishes within the 60-second wait, no .tmp file remains, and both assertions pass. Capture the job's Control before calling stop, then assert is_cancelled() afterward. This check does not depend on export timing.

Medium confidence. Re-raised with new evidence: the reply's claim doesn't hold. The earlier thread says the input-reading step (layer_work / export_work) is "the same as the command did on the UI thread". Before this PR, the dialog went through self.run(...) → Session::run, and Session::run wraps run_command in catch_unwind (crates/engine/src/lib.rs ~L1084). Now export_start runs here with no guard, and RustGisApp::run doesn't catch panics either, so a panic in the input-reading code would take the app down. This is the one path the hostile_params_never_panic test doesn't cover, because it runs through Session::run. Wrapping the call the way Session::run does closes it:
Suggested change
let run = exports::export_start(&mut app.session, command,&p)?;
let run = std::panic::catch_unwind(std::panic::AssertUnwindSafe(|| exports::export_start(&mut app.session, command,&p)))
Re-raised with new evidence (inline comment posted at crates/ui-egui/src/exportjob.rs:29): the dialog's input-reading step (export_start → layer_work / export_work) runs on the UI thread with no catch_unwind. Before this PR the same work ran inside Session::run, which catches panics, so the reply that it was "the same as the command did" doesn't hold. Medium confidence.
No other defects found. I checked the cancel path through each writer and the streamed-source readers: they propagate the visitor's error (gpkg.rschunks.push(f)?, gpkg_mem.rs keeps the visitor's error), so a cancel can't be reported as a successful write with rows missing. The pre-rename checks in write_atomic_with, cogwrite::write_file, the GeoPackage install and the Shapefile placement loop roll back as described. The dialog's "still running" refusal reaches the user through RustGisApp::run's error notice.
Security
None found. Temp files are created beside the destination and removed by guards on cancel. Export parameters go through the existing parsers.
Performance
None significant. Features is Arc-backed, so the layer clone taken on the UI thread is cheap. Low: for a Shapefile, the progress bar reaches 100% while the parts are built in memory, before they are staged and renamed. Cosmetic only.
Quality (nits, grouped; for the release quality pass)
DataError::Io lost #[from], so Error::source() now returns None for it. Keeping #[source] on the field would preserve the chain. Low.
write_here and export_start each repeat the IN_BACKGROUND lookup. A shared helper would remove the duplication.
A user Cancel lands as an error notice (notify(e, true)), and the notice doesn't say the destination was left as it was. Low.
AGENTS.md
Checked: no unwrap/expect/panic in new non-test code; tl!, tl_raw! and i18n::fmt are used for new UI text; the new UI code is gated for wasm and the wasm-only paths keep the old behaviour; progress sits in L1 and the analysis Control implements its trait, so layering holds; the sharing guide is updated; each writer has a cancelled and an uncancelled test. No new dependency.
Prior threads: I left 12 earlier concerns alone because they were answered and the code they point at hasn't changed. I re-raised one (above).
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR against main (merge base b8a9879 to PR head 50f5831).
…ON (#1439)
exports_run_on_another_thread (#1433) failed on Windows x64 and ARM64:
it replaced the export path in the answer's JSON text, where a Windows
path's backslashes are escaped, so the path never matched and the
answers still differed by file name. Replace the path as JSON spells
it.
…ands
The app's exports on a thread of their own bypass `Session::run`, so they were missing from the
session's log (Export Features since opengeos#1433). `ExportRun::started` keeps the command, its
parameters and when it started, and `export_land` writes the entry `Session::run` would have,
with the parameters kept as the log keeps them, failed or not.

Part of #1291 step 3 (tracked in #1252's UI-thread list): Export Features and Export Raster stop blocking the UI thread.
What changes for the user
On the desktop, Export Features (
share.exportLayer) and Export Raster (share.exportRaster) read their inputs when the export starts, then write the file on a thread of their own. While one runs, the status bar shows its name, a progress bar and Cancel. When it ends, its messages are the ones the command gave before. One export runs at a time.rustgis-cli runat a terminal runs it under a control that Ctrl-C stops, as the raster tools do since feat(analysis): a run that can be cancelled takes no work cap (#1291 step 2) #1418.Changes
rustgis_data::progress(new): a thread-localProbewithbegin/step/check, andDataError::Cancelled. With no probe installed, as for a script or the web app, the writers only run.tiffcompresses insidewrite_data, so strips can't be counted.analysis::control::Controlis aProbe, installed byrun_under, so one Cancel and one progress count reach both tools and exports.cmd/exports.rs(new): anIN_BACKGROUNDtable as inworkflows.rs;export_startreads the session,ExportRun::runwrites the file, andexport_landsays what was written.share.rsandraster.rssplit each export into what it reads (the layer clone is cheap: features and pixels are shared) and the writing.ui-egui/src/exportjob.rs(new): start, land each frame, and the status-bar row.Tests
a_cancelled_export_leaves_no_file(data): 3,000 points, cancelled after 100 items, in all eight vector formats. Each returnsCancelledand leaves the directory empty; without a probe all are written.a_cancelled_raster_write_stops(data): a COG cancelled after 2 tiles leaves no file; the GeoTIFF write stops too.exports_run_on_another_thread(engine): GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage in EPSG:3857, GeoTIFF and COG, each written on a thread and here. They have the same bytes (a GeoPackage: the same features), the same answer and the same messages, and nothing is said before the export lands. A run cancelled before it starts writes nothing, and bad inputs are refused at start.a_cancel_after_the_file_is_placed_leaves_it_written(engine).export_features_writes_on_a_thread_and_lands(ui): through the dialog's path. A second export is refused while the first runs, and the first lands with another layer active.Summary by CodeRabbit
