Part of #1252 (Models and scripts, UI-thread track; #1291 step 3). It follows #1487, which did the same for models.

What changes

On the desktop, Run (or Ctrl+Enter) in the Script pane no longer holds the window while the script's tools work. The status bar shows Run Script, the current tool's progress and Cancel. The pane's results say Running… until the run lands, then show each line's result as before.

How

It reuses #1487's mechanism: the script runs first on a copy of the session on a thread, then script.run runs here and takes the recorded tool results.

  • workflows::model_ahead becomes ahead_on_copy(s, command, p) for model.run and script.run. reads::read_ahead dispatches script.run to it on native.
  • run_script takes the recording under the SCRIPT_AHEAD key and runs under gp::taking. A model.run line inside the script takes from the same queue.
  • On the copy, a line runs only if its id is in ON_A_COPY and its parameters name no file (items::touches_files). Any other line ends the copy with NOT_AHEAD, and from there the run here runs the rest as scripts always have. The list holds:
    • tools and models (gp.run, gp.spatialJoin, gp.zonalStats, model.run), whose results are taken;
    • lines the taking compares by value: selections, layer.rename, layer.definitionQuery, layer.select, layer.remove, gp.env and map.projection.
  • Edits, Buffer a Point and a layer from a selection aren't on the list. They make rows of their own, and rows made on the copy never match the run here's (same_read compares rows by Arc), so every tool after them would run again.
  • Add Data and Load All aren't on the list either, because they would read their files and servers twice.
  • gp::take_ahead and same_read are unchanged. A tool whose inputs changed meanwhile, and every one after it, runs here.
  • In the Script pane, start_script queues the start time and run_then calls script_ran as each run lands. Runs land in the order asked. A run that is cancelled, or left because another project or map was opened, shows why in the results.
  • In readjob, called(command, what) names a script "Run Script" in the cancelled and left notices. If the copy fails, the script runs here with a notice, as a model does.
  • The command line and the assistant run scripts where the command runs. The web app is unchanged.

Tests

  • a_scripts_tools_run_ahead_are_taken_by_its_run:
    • two tools with a selection between them, then a model: all three tool results are taken, with the same layers and history as a run here, in one undo step;
    • a project.save line stops the copy: the copy saves nothing, the run here saves once and runs the tool after it;
    • an edit.addField line stops the copy: the tool before it is taken and the tool after it runs here;
    • a selection changed meanwhile makes the tool run here;
    • every id in ON_A_COPY is a registered command.
  • a_scripts_tools_run_on_a_thread_and_land_in_the_pane: covers Running…, then the results as Run Add RustGIS: pure-Rust desktop GIS with a ribbon UI #1; Run pressed twice, with both runs landing in order; cancel; and another project opened, giving "Run Script was left: another project was opened".

cargo xtask ci checks fmt, clippy, tests and layers, and the wasm build passes. The three box-only failures are known: filegdb with GDAL, mapgpu parity, and damaged shapefiles.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Desktop scripts can evaluate supported tools and models in the background. Selections and other supported commands are included; when a script reaches an unsupported command, it and the remaining commands run synchronously.
    • Script results appear in request order, with elapsed time and clear error or not-run messages. Runs left pending when switching projects are handled separately.
    • If tool inputs change before results are added, the tool runs again in the live session.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the analysis guide to explain background script execution and how models run from the Script pane versus other entry points.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Script runs can prepare eligible tools and models on a copied session and reuse their results during execution. Desktop Script pane runs use the background read-job flow, which reports pending and completed runs. Documentation describes background execution and its limits.

Changes: Script Execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record and reuse script results
crates/engine/src/cmd/gp.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/reads.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/workflows.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The engine dispatches script runs through ahead_on_copy, records eligible work on a copied session, and reuses recorded results during the actual run. Read-ahead stops before script lines outside the copy policy. Tests cover result reuse, stop conditions, changed selections, and undo history.
Dispatch and report Script pane runs
crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/readjob.rs, docs/user-guide/analysis.md
Desktop Script pane runs use the background read-job flow. The UI tracks run timing and order, displays results and failure or not-run messages, and uses command-aware notices. Documentation describes the background execution rules.

Code review

I found no crash, data-loss or security issues. The main logic holds up. The copy stops at the first line that isn't on the whitelist, a line error on the copy stops the script, and gp::taking clears its queue on every exit. same_read compares everything the newly whitelisted lines can change: selections, names, definition queries, projection and environment. The new script.run path is only compiled on native, and the desktop app is the only place that turns off-frame reads on.

Bugs

  • Queued Script runs report the wrong start time and duration. The clock starts when a run is asked, not when it starts, so a run queued behind another includes the earlier run's wait. Low severity. Confidence: high. (analysispane.rs:1561)

Performance

  • Every Script run clones the project on the UI thread before the copy starts, even when its first line stops the copy. model.run already did this. Confidence: about 40%, since I didn't measure the cost of the clone. (workflows.rs:530)

Quality

  • The readjob.rs:58 doc line is about 112 columns, wider than the lines around it. Left for the release quality pass. (readjob.rs:58)

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. New user text goes through tl! or tl_raw!, and there are no unwraps in non-test code.

Earlier concerns: none. prior-reviews.json has no threads, so I raised nothing again.

Code review

Bugs: None found. I traced readjob::run_then and land, and each path calls the script's then exactly once, so the script_started queue stays aligned. I also checked the ON_A_COPY commands against the state a copy carries (camera, environment, projection), and the copy-and-take logic holds for them. The desktop-only gating keeps the wasm build intact. Confidence: high.

Security: None found. The script parser and the copy-stop check take hostile input without panicking, and touches_files keeps file- and URL-reaching lines on the run here. Confidence: high.

Performance: None new. The earlier eager-clone concern is fixed (script_ahead returns None before cloning when the first line can't run on a copy). Confidence: high.

Quality:

  • Broken intra-doc link: crates/engine/src/lib.rs:761 still links to cmd::workflows::model_ahead, which this PR renames to ahead_on_copy. rustdoc reports it as a broken link. Suggested fix: /// ([cmd::workflows::ahead_on_copy]): the session's own Diagnostics, as when they're made. I tried to post this inline, but GitHub rejected it because the line is not part of the diff, so it appears here only. Confidence: high. It is the only remaining reference to model_ahead in the repo.
  • Docs wording, docs/user-guide/analysis.md: "From the first line of any other kind…" reads as if only the first such line stops the copy. The copy stops at any such line. Confidence: medium.
  • Nits for the release quality pass, not posted: the new line in docs/user-guide/analysis.md (~line 589) and the gp.rs comment (~line 47) are over the ~100-column wrap the surrounding docs use.

AGENTS.md: No violations found. There are no new unwrap/expect/panic calls in non-test code. The new user-visible strings use tl!/tl_raw!/i18n::fmt. Landed is not cfg-gated, so the wasm build is fine. The new analysispane tests use .unwrap() without an allow, but the existing tests in that module already do the same, so I did not flag it. Confidence: medium.

Prior reviews: The five existing threads (queued timing, eager clone, callback order, pending-run indicator, doc wrap) are all resolved and their fixes match the code. I left all five alone.

Code review

Bugs

  • Pending "Running…" hidden when results are long (crates/ui-egui/src/analysispane.rs:1595, inline comment posted). The line is pushed into script_out, which renders inside a 6-row scroll area, so with more than six result lines it sits below the visible area. This is the unanswered follow-up from the earlier thread, and it still applies to the current code. Confidence: high.

Security

  • Nothing found. Scripts can't reach script.*, ui.* or notebook.run lines. Plugin and GeoLibre tools and file-writing tools stop the copy before they run. I checked this in run_tool_with and runs_on_a_copy.

Performance

  • Low: each Run parses the script on the UI thread (script_ahead), and then again on the copy and in the run here. Scripts that begin with selections or gp.env still clone the project and start a thread even when they record no tools. Confidence: low, and likely negligible in practice.

Quality

  • Nit (for the release quality pass): the docs/user-guide/analysis.md paragraph around the "A tool whose inputs change meanwhile…" sentence has a line about 118 columns, well past the file's ~100-column wrap.

AGENTS.md

  • Screenshots missing. The PR changes visible UI (the Run Script status bar entry, Cancel, and the Running… results), but the PR body has no before/after or after-only screenshots, which AGENTS.md requires for any visible change. Confidence: high.

Checked and not raised

  • The copy-stop logic, the same_read comparisons (layers, selections, projection, tables, environment), and the then callback ordering in readjob::land. I found no concrete failure in these.
  • map.projection's cache fill is gated on auto_cache, which is off on the copy, so it is not a double side effect.
  • The ON_A_COPY entries I inspected have no effects outside the session.

Prior concerns left alone: 5 threads already raised by earlier reviewers. Four are resolved in the author's push, and the wrap nit is outdated. I re-raised one, the pending-indicator case, since the follow-up is unanswered.

Stop recording before Merge reads a local file

A direct gp.run with a bare filename, or a model.run containing a Merge step, can read the file on the copy. If the file changes before landing, take_ahead can reuse the old result because it compares only the session snapshot.

Stop recording at the shared file-read boundary when an input resolves to a local file. Keep recording when the inputs resolve to session layers.

Code review

Bugs

  • None confirmed. I checked the copy/taking path (take_ahead runs before map_inputs, errors are recorded and replayed only when the snapshot matches, and a failed copy-side load returns before it is recorded), the readjob queue (every queued then fires in FIFO order, which keeps script_started aligned), and the leave callback ordering. Confidence: high.

Security

  • None found. Script lines that name paths or addresses are caught by touches_files. Confidence: high.

Performance

  • Low: script_ahead clones the project and starts a thread for scripts whose first line is selection-only, even when nothing reads (see inline comment at workflows.rs:549). Confidence: high.

Quality

  • Low: gp.spatialJoin and gp.zonalStats are listed in ON_A_COPY and described as taken ahead. An output name trips touches_files on them, so any line with an output name stops the copy (see inline comment at workflows.rs:565). Confidence: about 75%.
  • Low, latent: readjob::stop drops queued thens without calling them. That is harmless today because it only runs at exit (end_exports). If it ever runs mid-session, script_started will fall out of step and "Running…" will stick. Confidence: medium.
  • Nit, for the release quality pass: docs/user-guide/analysis.md around line 1108 has a line well over 100 columns.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found. The new strings use tl!, tl_raw! and i18n::fmt. There are no unwrap, expect or unsafe calls in non-test code. The wasm gating is consistent. Confidence: high.

Prior threads

  • Six earlier threads are all resolved or outdated, and the code matches their fixes, so I left them alone. The "Running…" placement follow-up is fixed in b982df72 and covered by a test with eight result lines.
