fix: leave nothing behind when an extraction is cancelled or fails - #339
hertza-haeon wants to merge 5 commits into
Conversation
"Extract archive", Finder's three extract actions and Quick Look's extract button handed the destination itself to the engine. A run that was cancelled, or met a damaged entry, left what it had written by then in the destination, together with the container folder smart extraction had made for it. The engine now writes into a work folder inside the destination, which is moved into place once the extraction has succeeded and removed otherwise. It is on the destination's own volume, so putting the result in place is a rename, and the access the app already holds covers it. The work folder is a placeholder Finder can show: `<archive>.macpack`, declared as a package type so it appears as one item, dimmed the way Finder dims what it is still copying, with the extraction's progress published on it. A finished extraction ends up where it did before: same layout, same container naming, same overwriting of what is already there. What could not be put in place (a file where a folder goes, an item that cannot be written) now fails before anything has moved. "Extract selected" already went through a temp folder; it no longer leaves the empty container folder behind when it does not finish.

… is whole Two points from the review of this pull request. A cancel that arrived as the engine finished was ignored: the engine had nothing left to stop and returned normally, so the result was put in place and the run reported as done. The run is now checked for cancellation before anything of it is committed. Where an extracted file replaces one that sits behind a link on another volume, the old file was removed before the new one had been copied across, so a copy that failed left neither. The new file is now copied beside the old one and takes its place in a single rename.

ExtractionStaging.commit(as:)rollback destination changes when a later step fails.
commit(as: nil)plans all steps, then executes them sequentially. An earlier.moveor.replacecan change the destination before a laterStep.run()throws.ArchiveStatethen callsstaging.discard(), which removes only the remaining work folder. It does not restore moved items or overwritten files. A failed extraction can therefore leave partial output or permanently lose an overwritten destination file. The existing tests cover preflight failure before any move and a failed copy that preserves the old file. They do not cover a failure after an earlier step has succeeded. Make the commit reversible, or otherwise restore every destination change when a later step fails, and add a regression test for that sequence.

…lled "Extract to" Two more points from the review of this pull request. Extracting over items that are already there puts the result in place step by step. A step that failed after earlier ones had succeeded left the destination partly updated, and a file already replaced did not come back. Every step can now be taken back, and is when a later one fails: a replaced file changes places with its replacement (or is kept beside itself where the volume cannot do that), and an item that was moved in goes back. Finder's Extract to "name" created its folder before extracting, so a cancelled run left it behind, empty. The extraction now makes that folder itself, and takes it back with a run that does not finish.

Before: Cancel stops an extraction through the engine. If it came just as the engine finished, or the engine never looked for it, the extraction still ended as done. "Close the window afterwards", and Move to Trash (sarensw#354), then acted as if the user hadn't cancelled. Now: both extractions check for a cancel once the engine is through, before they say they are done (Task.checkCancellation), and end as cancelled when there was one. sarensw#339 checks the same before it puts the result in place. The test uses a stand-in engine that ignores Cancel and is released only after the cancel, so the moment is controlled rather than left to timing.

What & why
When an extraction is cancelled part-way, or stops on a damaged archive, the files written so far stay in the destination, together with the container folder smart extraction made for them.
ArchiveState.extract(to:smart:)handed the destination itself to the engine and cleaned nothing up.This change extracts into a work folder inside the destination and moves the result into place only once the extraction has succeeded; otherwise the work folder is removed and the destination is as it was. The work folder is on the destination's own volume, so putting the result in place is a rename, and the access the app already holds covers it. One function is behind "Extract archive", Finder's three extract actions and Quick Look's extract button, so all of them get it. "Extract selected" already went through a temp folder; it only stops leaving the empty container folder behind.
The work folder is a placeholder Finder can show:
photos.zipextracts intophotos.macpack, a package type the app declares. Its line is dimmed the way Finder dims an item it is still copying (the same creation-date mark), and the extraction publishes its progress for it, so Finder draws a progress ring on it. On cancel the item disappears; on success it becomes the result.A finished extraction ends up where it did before: same layout, same container naming, same overwriting of what is already there (#140 is not touched). What could not be put in place, such as a file where a folder goes, now fails before anything has moved.
Closes #338
How it was verified
Tests. The new tests were written first and failed on
main(the ones about leftovers; the ones about a finished extraction passed before and after).swift test --package-path Modules: 672 tests passed, 641 before this change.ExtractionLeftoverTests(11): throughArchiveState, an extraction that ends cancelled, failed or at the password prompt leaves the destination as it was, smart extraction on and off; nothing is overwritten by a run that does not finish; a finished run leaves only its result, still overwrites and merges with both engines, and still numbers a container whose name is taken.ExtractionStagingTests(20): the work folder by itself: naming, merging into what is there, links, read-only folders, clashes found before anything moves, the dimming mark and its removal from the result.Measured through
ArchiveState.extract(to:smart:)on a zip of 40 stored files, before and after:mainBuild.
xcodebuild -scheme MacPacker buildsucceeds. I did not build the Store scheme locally; itsInfo_Store.plistgets the same type declaration.By hand, in the Debug app on macOS 27.0.1, with a 4 GB rar:
name.macpackappears in Finder, dimmed, with the progress ring; cancelling makes it disappear with nothing left behind; on completion the result takes its place.Screenshots follow in a comment below.
Update, second commit: both of CodeRabbit's remarks are addressed, each with a test. A cancel that arrives just as the engine finishes now cancels the run instead of being ignored, and a file replaced behind a link on another volume is only removed once its replacement has been copied beside it.
Update, third commit: CodeRabbit's second round is addressed too. Putting the result in place can now be undone: if a step fails after earlier ones succeeded, the items moved in go back and the files replaced are restored, so the destination is as it was (tested with a file protected against deletion, which stops a commit part-way). And Finder's Extract to "name" no longer creates its folder up front: the extraction makes it and takes it back with a run that does not finish, so a cancel leaves nothing. That last part is covered by tests through
ArchiveState, and checked by hand: the Debug app was sent the Finder extension's ownextractToFolderrequest (through its URL scheme) for a 3.8 GB rar in Downloads; the folder and its.macpackappeared, and cancelling a quarter of the way through removed both, leaving only the rar. With #317's case (a file already has the folder's name) the run now fails with a message instead of doing nothing; its cause is untouched.Yours to decide
ArchiveState..macpackextension, the type's name in Finder ("MacPacker Extraction") and its identifier are suggestions.UTTypeIconFile=AppIcon). Left to itself, macOS drew a blank page with a question mark at list-view size. Not covered here: Finder offers no cancel on the item; stopping stays in MacPacker's window. If the app is killed mid-run, the placeholder stays, dimmed and in plain sight.
