Why

A backtest of 4 tuning nights takes about an hour on Pod 5, which rules out real parameter sweeps on the pod. This adds a way to fit biometric profiles on a laptop against data exported from the pod. The pod still confirms the winner.

Stacked on #836 (the build the pod runs). It's a separate PR; retarget to dev once #836 merges.

What

Export (pod)

  • GET /api/biometric-tuning/datasets/{id}/export streams one frozen dataset as a tar: bundle.json (each file with its size and SHA-256), manifest.json, snapshot.json, and the raw/<sha256>.RAW.gz archives the snapshot references. Nothing else goes in.
  • Before streaming, a new read-lane coordinator task (exportDataset) checks three things off the main event loop: the dataset content hash, that the live RAW references exactly match the snapshot, and each archive's SHA-256. The route hashes each archive again while streaming and aborts on any change.
  • A released or unknown dataset returns 404. An integrity failure returns 409 and streams nothing. One export runs at a time, with a watchdog.
  • MCP export_calibration_dataset (read-only) and tRPC describeDatasetExport return the index and the download path. Waveform bytes never pass through MCP.

Local runner (pnpm biometrics:local-fit, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/)

  • verify, fit, sweep (grid, or the built-in default grid of 18 points), and parity.
  • Every hash is verified before any replay: files, dataset content hash, exact archive set.
  • Each tuning and validation night is replayed per distinct configuration with the unchanged replay_worker.run() (via local_replay.py), across parallel worker slots. Each slot gets its own hard-linked retained directory, because the read-only store serializes readers on its lock.
  • Scoring uses the pod's own evaluateBacktest. Output is one report per candidate per split, labelled exploratory-local / not_activation_evidence, plus a ranking by tuning HR error difference vs defaults, with validation alongside.
  • Holdout is refused locally.
  • runWaveformChild gets an optional trusted script entry, so the local runner reuses its exact event validation. The pod path is unchanged.

Results on the 7 frozen nights (dataset 983a8da1)

  • Local Python replay sources are byte-identical to the pod's build. NumPy 2.2.6 and SciPy 1.15.3 match.
  • Parity: the validation night 2026-10-11 gives 4.304694260860779 bpm for defaults both locally and on the pod (57 pairs), a difference of 0. Tuning parity needs a pod tuning result; the pod's earlier tuning job failed on resource admission.
  • Default sweep: 19 candidates, 90 replays, 10 workers, 13.0 min on a 10-core laptop.
  • The dataset's Watch reference has HR and stages only, so breathing and HRV error report no_paired_reference.

Test plan

  • vitest: export (released → 404, hash mismatch → 409 and no stream, missing/unreferenced archives, tamper mid-stream aborts, tar length matches Content-Length), bundle verification (hash/size mismatch, edited snapshot, unlisted/linked/missing files, crafted tar entries), report shape/ranking/parity, grid expansion, holdout refusal, MCP tool listing
  • Full suite: 7385 passed. The only failure was the known-flaky piezoStream test, which passes on rerun.
  • tsc --noEmit, eslint .
  • Real 430 MB bundle built through prepareDatasetExport + datasetBundleChunks, verified and fitted locally
  • Deployed 77ab518 to Pod 5 (.88). The MCP export_calibration_dataset index and curl export of 983a8da1 streamed 430,855,168 bytes in 27 s, byte-identical to the locally built bundle, and verify passed. Unknown id → 404, malformed id → 400.
  • On the pod, a coordinator-rebuilt ReferenceInputError is not instanceof the route's class (a bundled module copy), so the first deploy returned 500 for an unknown id. The route now maps by code (77ab518). The existing getDataset has the same 500 for an unknown id; that is out of scope here.
  • Dropped pod confirmation backtests: the pod's replay admission withdraws multi-hour tuning jobs when load passes 1.1/CPU. Instead, rank 1 (82343b18, trackingToleranceBpm 10) was applied to the left side as an unvalidated manual activation (generation 1). All three numeric components report the applied hash a3e2ff94…; it gets judged against the next night's Watch export.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds an integrity-checked dataset export endpoint and MCP metadata tool. It also adds a local CLI to verify exported bundles, replay biometric candidates, generate reports, and compare local results with pod results.

Changes: Dataset export and local fitting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bundle preparation and integrity checks
src/biometrics/backtest/bundle-tar.ts, src/biometrics/backtest/dataset-export.ts, src/biometrics/backtest/coordinator-*, src/biometrics/backtest/tests/*
The export code validates frozen dataset references and retained RAW archives, creates a bundle index, and streams tar entries. Coordinator tasks dispatch export preparation. Tests cover bundle contents, hashes, and changes to archives.
HTTP and MCP export access
app/api/biometric-tuning/datasets/[id]/export/route.ts, src/server/routers/biometricTuning.ts, src/mcp/tools/biometrics.ts, src/mcp/tests/server.test.ts, src/mcp/README.md, docs/biometrics-datasets.md
The HTTP route streams tar downloads and handles request validation, concurrent exports, and stream cleanup. The router and MCP tool return export metadata and a download path.
Bundle verification and candidate replay
scripts/biometrics-local-fit/bundle.ts, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/cli.ts, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/fit.ts, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/grid.ts, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/local_replay.py, src/biometrics/backtest/waveform-child.ts, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/bundle.test.ts, package.json, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/README.md
The CLI extracts and verifies bundles, then runs candidate fits or grid sweeps through local replay workers. Holdout replay requires explicit inclusion. The CLI also supports bundle verification and parity commands.
Reports, parity checks, and usage
scripts/biometrics-local-fit/report.ts, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/report.test.ts, docs/biometrics-datasets.md, scripts/biometrics-local-fit/README.md
Reports summarize candidate metrics and rankings. Parity checks compare local defaults with pod results, including a configurable heart-rate tolerance. Reports are labeled exploratory and not activation evidence.

An oversized bundle can consume substantial laptop disk before verification rejects it, and exports can delay other dataset reads. Address those risks before merging; also correct invalid job-count handling and the holdout error message.

CodeRabbit (mirror ng#24) findings, addressed in 8319f8b:

  • Fixed: grid ids stay unique and valid (sign kept as m, long ids get a hash suffix, duplicates numbered, candidateFileSchema now checks expanded grids).
  • Fixed: candidate ids that would collide with runner outputs (., .., work, bundle, readings, ranking.*, run.json, parity.json) are rejected.
  • Fixed: the first failed replay aborts every in-flight Python worker.
  • Fixed: hashRetainedArtifact closes its handle on read errors.
  • Fixed: fit refuses a bundle path inside the extraction directory instead of deleting it.
  • Skipped (nitpick, marked heavy lift): sharing a single-use prepared export between the index request and the download. A full export takes about 27 s, and the cache would add expiry and binding state to save one archive read. Both verification passes stay in place.

Enforce the file-size limit before extraction writes the entry.

extractBundle accepts the indexed size and streams the complete RAW entry to disk. verifyBundle checks MAX_RAW_BYTES only after that write. A schema-valid archive with a RAW entry larger than 256 MiB can therefore exhaust local disk before verification rejects it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate --jobs before you pass it to fitCandidates.

Number(flags.jobs) returns NaN for input such as --jobs four or --jobs 4x. In fit.ts Line 138, Math.max(1, Math.min(NaN, n)) then evaluates to NaN. As a result, prepareWorkerSlots creates zero slots, and runPool resolves without any replay. The first report then fails with Missing replay output for <cohort>. That message does not identify the invalid flag. Reject any value that is not a positive integer at the CLI boundary.

Validate `flags.jobs` in the CLI before passing it to `fitCandidates`: convert
it to a number and reject values that are not positive safe integers, including
malformed and non-positive inputs, with an error identifying `--jobs`. Preserve
`undefined` when the flag is omitted.

Correct the stale holdout error message.

The error text says "holdout is never replayed locally". That is no longer true. With --include-holdout, fitCandidates replays and scores holdout nights (fit.ts Line 119, Line 128). The README (Lines 61-63) documents that behavior. A user who scored holdout locally gets a wrong explanation for the parity refusal. The docstring in fit.ts Lines 111-113 ("Holdout nights are never replayed here") has the same contradiction. Restate the actual rule: parity compares only tuning and validation results.

Update the holdout error in the parity check around report.split to say that
holdout results are not compared, rather than implying they are never replayed
locally. Update the matching expectation in report.test.ts and the fitCandidates
docstring in fit.ts to preserve this distinction between replaying holdout
results and parity comparisons.

Move exportDataset out of the serialized read lane.

CoordinatorQueue permits one active task per lane. prepareDatasetExport hashes every referenced RAW archive before it returns, so one export holds the only read slot for the full hash pass. Other read requests can wait during that pass. Repeated MCP calls can occupy the slot back-to-back. A guard alone would not remove this read-lane blockage.

Review comment at @src/biometrics/backtest/coordinator-lanes.ts at line 5:
Change the `exportDataset` lane assignment in `CoordinatorQueue` from `read` to
`work`, leaving the other lane assignments unchanged so dataset export hashing
does not occupy the serialized read lane.

Post-merge CodeRabbit review: the oversized-entry check, --jobs validation and the stale holdout wording are fixed in #841. Declined: moving exportDataset to the coordinator's work lane. That lane runs hour-long backtest replays, so an export would queue behind them; the read-lane hash pass takes seconds, and the route allows one export at a time.
