Add the github-mcp hosted entry for GitHub's remote MCP server with a separate pre-registered GitHub App client, S256 PKCE, offline_access, and a settings-page removal path.
Pin six read tools and their input schemas from github/github-mcp-server commit 796afb74711ddc856fe587debc49373e21c8d0f7. No write tool or caller-chosen URL/fetch target is offered by this PR. The App being registered has write permissions for the follow-up pin PR; the current catalogue entry remains read-only until then.
Pin GitHub's documented client_secret_post token authentication when its metadata omits the supported-method list. Other entries retain the existing default. Preserve an explicit empty token scope response.
Add optional backend env refs for GITHUB_MCP_CLIENT_ID and GITHUB_MCP_CLIENT_SECRET, derived from the github-mcp id. Gate the ExternalSecret remote refs behind hostedMcp.githubMcp.enabled: off in base values, on in dev after both App client secrets gained enabled versions in Secret Manager on 2026-10-19. The backend refs remain optional for self-hosted instances. The catalogue is not_configured wherever the client values are absent.
Evidence and remaining gates
Wiring and hosted-entry focused suites: 53/53 tests passed at bfad709; the dev-enable follow-up reran wiring 6/6. Backend TypeScript check and Helm lint passed. Helm template omits GitHub remote refs at base defaults and includes both at dev values. git diff --check is clean.
The preceding six-read entry was gated PASS by Vera at 4686d47. The wiring and dev-enable follow-ups at c5c0f6a need an exact-head gate after CI.
No credential, GitHub App registration, live consent or browser session was used. A fresh-account consent and authenticated tools/list drift check remain required before an outside-team offer.
TASK-225 and TASK-237. No merge before Wednesday's call; backend merges follow Wednesday's deploy and walk. The write pins will be a separate PR built only from connector-ops' captured tool schemas.
Draft, base main, merge-base b57966d2 = origin/main (base unmoved), 12 files. CI is fully green at this SHA — 14 success, nothing failed, cancelled or pending, and that includes Service Tests (Tier 1 — real DBs), which the ask reported as still queued; it has since passed. Five touched suites: 147/147 + 4/4 (the wiring suite sits at __tests__/unit/integrations/, not __tests__/integrations/ — a path that matches nothing runs nothing, so I ran it separately). tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.typescheck.json 0 errors; eslint 0 errors.
The pin is faithful to its source, measured rather than read
The entry maps pin.tools wholesale, so an extra tool in the JSON would ship with description: undefined and class: 'read' regardless. It does not: the pin carries exactly 6 tools, the fixture snapshot carries the same 6 names, and all six have descriptions. Comparing the two files field by field:
pin
upstream snapshot
tools
6
6 (same names)
readOnlyHint
true ×6
true ×6
inputSchema
—
byte-equal for all six
So no tool was re-labelled read, and no schema was hand-edited on the way in. What I cannot verify is that the snapshot is github/github-mcp-server@796afb74: the provenance rests on the cited SHA, and the file agrees with itself. The entry's own comment is right that a consenting account's first tools/list is the real drift check — which is the standing property of these pins: advertised, not enforced, until a live list arrives.
Credentials, and the id that keeps them separate
hostedMcpClientConfigKeys derives env keys from the entry id, so github-mcp → GITHUB_MCP_CLIENT_ID / GITHUB_MCP_CLIENT_SECRET. That separation is load-bearing rather than cosmetic: an entry id of github would have derived GITHUB_CLIENT_ID, the conventional name for a login OAuth app. Two things make that safe here — GITHUB_CLIENT_ID appears nowhere in the backend, and an entry id of github is a hard error at module load (a hosted entry cannot shadow the builtin GitHub Installable meta → collides with a builtin tool installable: github). Worth knowing before anyone tidies the id.
Neither derived key appears anywhere outside the new test, so both arrive at deploy time through the api-keys ExternalSecret, as the comment says.
The not-configured claim holds in all three states, including the one a reader would skip: no config → {available: false, reason: 'not_configured'}; client id only → still not_configured; both → {available: true}. A half-configured instance offers no Connect.
The auth-method pin narrows; it does not widen
endpointAuthentication previously defaulted to client_secret_basic when an AS omitted token_endpoint_auth_methods_supported, then took the first of [basic, post] that appeared. With tokenEndpointAuthMethod set, the pinned method is the only acceptable one — methods.find(c => c === pinnedMethod) — so an AS that later advertises basic only makes the connect fail loudly with client_auth_unsupported rather than silently sending the secret by the other method. Entries without the field keep the old behaviour exactly.
Mutations
Four, each alone, both files restored byte-identical to HEAD afterwards:
mutation
result
a tool reclassified class: 'write'
1 red
a repo scope added beside offline_access
1 red — GitHub pins six read tools from one fixed upstream commit and exposes no writer
revoke.page set to javascript:alert(1)
2 suites fail at import, Tests: 43 passed, no ✕ — the entries module-load invariant throws before any test runs
the pinned auth method ignored
1 red — uses GitHub App client_secret_post for exchange and refresh when metadata omits methods
The revoke-page row is the one to read carefully: it reports zero failing tests because the guard is at module load, which is stronger than a test but looks like a pass to a per-test grep.
No note worth holding for
The glyph line maps github-mcp to the existing GitHub mark, so two catalogue ids can render the same glyph — correct here, since both are GitHub, and the id collision that would actually matter is already refused at load. scopes: ['offline_access'] asks for a refresh token and no repository scope, which matches the GitHub App model where permissions live on the App rather than the grant; the entry is pre-registered, so no DCR and no registration happened, consistent with the ask.

Provenance gap closed — with one scoping correction
My verdict above named one thing I could not verify: that the fixture is github/github-mcp-server@796afb74711ddc856fe587debc49373e21c8d0f7. Kai has now checked it against the upstream snapshots and reports all six names, descriptions, inputSchemas and annotations matching. That closes the gap, and the fixture's own sourceCommit field reads exactly that SHA, so the file is self-documenting about what it claims to be.
One correction to the scope of that claim, so it is not later cited wider than it holds: the descriptions that match upstream are the fixture's, not the ones this entry ships.githubMcpSchemas.json carries only name, inputSchema and annotations — no descriptions — and githubMcp.ts supplies six hand-written ones, which differ from upstream for all six:
tool
ours
upstream
get_me
52 chars
171
list_issues
35
137
issue_read
49
62
list_pull_requests
42
148
pull_request_read
52
64
get_file_contents
48
64
That is a reasonable authoring choice and not a finding — each shipped line is an accurate "Read X" for a read-class tool, and a description is what the model reads when deciding to call a tool, so writing them in our own voice is defensible. The point is only that "descriptions verified against upstream" is true of the fixture and not of the shipped text; the schemas and annotations, which I measured byte-equal to the fixture, are the parts that carry upstream's word.
Nothing changes in the verdict: same head, same measurements, and the one caveat it carried is now closed.

Re-gate at c5c0f6a87269d4fc04289e5bced6d1d602845161. Previous verdict: PASS at 4686d476 (review 5564641081). I had this gate measured at bfad709e when the head moved under me, so nothing was filed there and everything below is at c5c0f6a8.
The head that moved is not a detail.bfad709e turned the dev gate OFF (enabled: false); c5c0f6a8 turns it ON, on the stated basis that both App client values now exist in Secret Manager. That inverts the claim a reviewer has to check, so this is a re-measurement rather than a carry-forward. Production blobs are identical between the two heads — githubMcp.ts, entries.ts, hostedMcpEntryService.ts, hostedMcpIntakeService.ts, api-keys.yaml, backend-deployment.yaml and values.yaml all unchanged — and the delta is values-dev.yaml plus the wiring test's expectation.
Property gated: a self-hosted instance still requests nothing, dev requests exactly two keys that exist, and the three artifacts that must agree on a name do agree.
Measured at this head
Renderings from helm template. Base chart alone, i.e. what a self-hosted instance gets: zerocommonly-dev-github-mcp-* remoteRefs, and the two env refs present as secretKeyRef into api-keys with optional: true. With -f values-dev.yaml: both remoteRefs render. helm lint: 1 chart linted, 0 failed.
The premise of the dev enablement, checked at the source rather than taken from the comment. Both commonly-dev-github-mcp-client-id and commonly-dev-github-mcp-client-secret exist, each with version 1 in state enabled (names and states only; no payload read). So the condition the chart comment names is satisfied, and the ESO stall it warns about does not apply to this instance.
Live baseline, read-only: the api-keys ExternalSecret is Ready=True, reason SecretSynced, and the synced secret carries 65 keys, none of them github-mcp-* yet — the chart change has not deployed. It does carry github-client-id / github-client-secret, which confirms by name that this entry's App is a separate credential from the sign-in app rather than a rename of it. (Counted with a positive control: 3 keys match google-calendar|slack in the same listing, so the zero is a real absence, not an empty query.)
The cross-artifact name is derived, not written: hostedMcpClientConfigKeys('github-mcp') returns GITHUB_MCP_CLIENT_ID / GITHUB_MCP_CLIENT_SECRET when run, which is what the chart maps, and github-mcp-client-{id,secret} is both the secretKeyRef key and the ExternalSecret secretKey.
Unconfigured behaviour, probed: with both env values absent, resolvedClientId throws client_not_configured naming GITHUB_MCP_CLIENT_ID; with the id present it returns it. The pinned set is 6 tools, all carrying readOnlyHint: true, none without — consistent with the comment's claim that only reads are pinned. (My first probe of that last fact read a field the entry does not have and reported 0 tools; the field is tools, and the numbers here are the corrected read.)
Five touched suites 153 passed / 153; tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.typescheck.json exit 0, no output.
Five mutations at this head, one variable each, restored between runs; worktree tree-identical to the head afterwards (2316e6f1). All five bit: base default flipped to true (the one that matters for self-hosted), the dev flag flipped back to false, the {{- if }} guard removed, the deployment env name mangled, and optional: true dropped. The fourth is the one worth naming — github-mcp rejoining the wiring table is what makes the id-derived env name a pinned fact rather than a coincidence.
Merged state, measured at the previous head and unaffected by a values-dev.yaml edit: the branch is behind main, which is one commit ahead of the merge-base and touches no file this PR touches; git merge-tree --write-tree clean, and on that merged tree the five suites were 153/153 with zero default remoteRefs.
Limits. I verified that both remote keys exist and are enabled, not that their contents are a working App registration — a wrong value fails at the first Connect, not at sync. ESO's stall-on-missing-remoteRef behaviour itself I did not exercise; it is now moot for dev and remains the reason the base default stays false.
This change adds a hosted GitHub MCP entry with six read-only tools. It configures OAuth token authentication and adds optional Helm credential wiring, readiness coverage, and a GitHub platform glyph.

Hide github-mcp in dev until the consent walk passes.
The dev hiddenEntries list hides atlassian and sentry. Its comment states the rule: "unwalked ships hidden". github-mcp is also unwalked. The PR states that fresh-account consent and an authenticated tools/list drift check have not happened. The header of githubMcp.ts says the first tools/list is the drift check "before this is offered".
With enabled: true and both secrets synced, readiness() returns available: true. The dev Tools catalogue then offers Connect for an entry that nobody has walked. The pinned schemas and the client_secret_post pin are unverified against live GitHub.
Add github-mcp to hiddenEntries. Remove it after the walk passes.

Inspect the publication write.
At revision 5c9cdd975ff624cb1892d29dbe1af71afe346945, mock.calls[1] is the retirement write. It has no config.grantedScope, so this test fails with undefined rather than ''. The publication write is mock.calls[2]. I verified the code path statically; I did not run the test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep GitHub hidden until the live walk passes.
This enables the credentials, but github-mcp is absent from hiddenEntries. Once the Secret syncs, the entry is available to users without an allowlist. The PR requires fresh-account consent and an authenticated tools/list check before an outside-team offer. Add github-mcp to hiddenEntries and allowlist the walk users until those checks pass.
