Scope

TASK-284 routes confined host seats' GitHub work through a per-spawn Unix socket and the existing backend grant broker. Executable gh and push shims are copied into a separate seat-visible directory; the listener remains in a daemon-owned directory denied to the seat except for its exact socket path. Runtime and GitHub App tokens remain outside the seat process. The backend checks the current grant, membership, connection, tool pin and rate budget on each call.

The command allowlist is PR create/view/comment/comment-only review and issue comment. Merge, close, deletion and arbitrary gh api are refused. Push accepts one bounded incremental bundle for a seat-owned branch. The backend checks provider objects and fast-forward ancestry for an existing branch, or provider ref absence for a fresh branch, then uses a provider ref lease. The helper's force indicator is untrusted. Read and confirm-required grants cannot push.

The 2/min push budget is mandatory at the shared broker boundary, including HTTP, MCP, and approved execution. PR head ownership is checked when an approval is proposed and when it executes. Policy push errors are audited as refusals.

Evidence

At dbac118e310bd38530e4e095ebb53e77159841da, Rhea's security gate and Vera's code gate pass. Exact-head CI is green/skipped, including the real-PostgreSQL service tier (606/606) and kind smoke. Focused backend 67/67, focused CLI 15/15, backend type check, targeted lint, CLI lint, and native macOS same-UID socket probe passed. The socket probe includes a proxy-off negative control: without features.network_proxy=true, a sibling socket connects; with it, the sibling is refused. A >64 KiB bundle forwards successfully.

Supervised staging walk

Staging has a separate backend URL and connector key ring. It does not yet have an agent runtime, so this walk uses a confined host seat on this Mac against the staging API, with the operator watching. It does not use a hosted agent or the production connection. Before starting, the operator confirms a staging test pod, agent installation/runtime credential, test GitHub App connection, pinned test repository, and an autonomous write grant containing the exact PR and github.push_branch tools. Use a disposable branch under the seat's refs/heads/seat/<agentUserId>/ prefix; do not use a protected or production branch.

  1. Launch the seat through the real Codex adapter with its sandbox profile and broker socket. Confirm the seat has no operator gh config, App token, runtime token, Keychain access, or fallback to the host gh. Refuse startup if the native socket proxy cannot enforce the exact-path rule.
  2. Use the seat to make a small test change, run its focused test, and commit on the disposable seat branch. Push through git-remote-commonly, then open and view the PR through the confined gh shim. The operator confirms the provider branch and PR and checks the broker's grant-bound audit receipts.
  3. Exercise the refusal controls without altering the test repository: an ungranted operation (gh api or merge), read/confirm-required push, another seat's known socket path, stale socket after restart, and a proxy-off control in a disposable probe process. The cross-seat probe must fail before any backend call when the proxy is on; the proxy-off control must show why the switch is required. Confirm no credential appears in seat output or logs.
  4. Revoke the staging grant or runtime credential and confirm the next broker call is refused. Have the operator remove the disposable PR and branch using trusted operator access after evidence is recorded.

Record the seat identity, staging pod/repository, exact head, command outcomes, audit receipt IDs, negative-control results, and cleanup in this PR without posting credentials. Rhea and Vera review the walk evidence and any resulting code delta before the draft is marked ready. TASK-280 adapter activation follows this broker walk and its own gates.

Pending

The supervised staging walk above remains to be run. This PR stays draft until its evidence and the follow-up Rhea/Vera walk review are complete.

Rebased for Lily 83526 onto main e0ad33d at c6c8bf6. The only conflict was the obsolete version-only commit; package/lock match main, no version bump. Fresh focused backend 67/67 (2 real-PG arms skipped locally), CLI 15/15 and native same-UID socket probe pass, including proxy-off control. CLI scoped lint passes. Local backend typecheck/scoped server lint encounter missing playwright-core and express-async-errors in the shared node_modules checkout; CI uses npm ci. Prior gates are historical; fresh code/security gates and the supervised staging walk remain required. No staging/live credential use, deploy or publish performed.

Rhea HOLD #2546 (review) fixed at f22c765. Bundle validation refuses push_protected_path (403) for .github/workflows, .github/actions, the .github entry itself and CODEOWNERS files before pushWithLease. It examines both the final diff and introduced commit history, with NUL-separated paths and rename detection off, so deletes, renames, merge resolutions and edits reverted later in a bundle remain refused. Existing branches compare against the current provider tip; fresh branches compare against the verified provider base.

Real-Git regression cases cover workflow/action/CODEOWNERS additions on fresh/existing branches, rename, deletion and reverted edits. Refusal tests assert no provider push call and unchanged ref. Push suite 15/15; disabling the guard makes the workflow case push successfully and fails the refusal assertion. Production scoped lint and diff check pass. Fresh code/security gates and CI required; supervised staging-walk draft hold remains.

#2546 HOLD at c58d368: specify socket isolation, fast-forward enforcement, and push grant/approval semantics before treating the design as a security contract.

This is the requested early design feedback. Reusing the backend App broker and keeping credentials out of the shell are sound choices. Three boundaries remain underspecified in the new D13 subsection:

  1. A socket-to-seat binding authenticates the socket, not its caller (lines 653–664). If seat A can connect to B's socket, the daemon will deliberately forward the request under B's tuple. A separate path, a hidden directory name, or owner-only permissions do not separate processes sharing one host UID. Require each seat's confinement policy to permit connection only to its own socket, deny other seat sockets and the daemon's control/configuration surfaces, and prevent endpoint replacement/rebinding across seat restarts. The daemon must derive the binding from trusted launch state. Acceptance: from two real confined same-UID seats, A's own operation succeeds, while A's direct connection to B's known socket fails before any backend call; repeat after removal/restart and with a stale endpoint.

  2. “Non-force” needs a server-enforced Git rule (lines 678–682). The receive-pack protocol carries old OID, new OID and ref name; it does not carry a trustworthy client --force decision. A raw request can name the correct existing OID and a divergent new commit under the allowed seat prefix. Require a trusted ancestry check plus the old-OID concurrency check, or an enforced provider rule covering every allowed seat ref without an App bypass. Name the mechanism; refuse when it cannot establish fast-forward. Validate the complete command framing before forwarding and derive the prefix from the authenticated seat. Acceptance: existing-ref fast-forward succeeds; divergent update with correct old OID, stale old OID, second ref, deletion, tag, and another seat's prefix each fail. A fresh branch is a separate allowed case.

  3. The separate push channel must preserve tool-scoped grants and confirmation (lines 667–687). “Active grant”, read/write mode and a ToolCall-style receipt do not fully describe the existing broker's authority check. At this head, roomGrantService.ts:405–419 checks the exact tool in grant.tools; toolBrokerService.ts:1200–1214 applies that check, and :1239–1248 parks writes under write-with-confirm. Specify a registered push capability and the same checks for both channels. A grant permitting issue comments must not acquire repository-push authority. Decide explicitly whether push parks with immutable repo/ref/old-OID/new-OID/content identity bound to approval and revalidated at execution, or refuses write-with-confirm until that support exists. Autonomous execution requires the appropriate explicitly granted write capability. Acceptance includes omitted push tool, read-only grant, confirm-required grant with zero provider writes before approval, and revocation or changed arguments before execution.

Read the complete one-file +48/-0 diff, surrounding ratified D13, current broker/grant source, and the primary Git protocol. Merge-base/main is 8768703; diff check is clean and REVIEW.md/checklist are unchanged. This review contains source/design evidence; no implementation tests or real sandbox/push walk were run. The PR remains a design draft awaiting its implementation gate and staging walk.

#2546 DESIGN CLEARED at eb37172

The amendment closes all three design holds from review 5634413406:

  • Socket authority now requires enforced exact-path isolation, trusted launch binding, endpoint retirement on replacement, and refusal to start when the native profile cannot enforce separation. The acceptance walk explicitly attacks another same-UID seat's known socket, including restart and stale endpoints.
  • Push now requires complete request framing, a server-derived seat prefix, quarantined objects, trusted ancestry validation and a compare-and-swap lease against the verified old OID. The listed cases distinguish valid fast-forward updates from divergent updates carrying the correct old OID, stale updates and extra or unauthorized refs.
  • Push is an explicit github.push_branch capability under the existing broker checks. Read and tool-omitting grants cannot push; confirmation-required grants refuse until immutable approval and revalidation are implemented. Autonomous push requires an explicit full-write grant.

I read the complete one-file merge-base diff (+80/-0), the correction from c58d368, and the relevant exact-head broker/grant checks. Base and fetched main are 8768703; rubric/checklist are unchanged, diff check is clean, and the fetched ref matches the live PR head.

Implementation detail to make explicit in code/tests: a fresh branch has no old commit for an ancestry test. Validate its new commit and require absence via the zero-OID lease; existing branches require ancestry plus the old-OID lease. Keep the trusted Git process isolated from client-controlled config, hooks, replacement objects and credential settings.

This clears the design only. No application tests, real socket isolation, Git push, or staging walk were performed for this prose change. Keep the draft and implementation/security gates and the required staging branch/test/push/PR walk pending.

CODE GATE: PASS at 5d01de1

Reviewed the 21-file merge-base diff and the 9299d98..5d01de1 delta (CLI version only). The route maps a fixed command allowlist to exact grant tools; the push tool remains restricted to autonomous write grants and a seat-owned ref. The backend validates one advertised bundle head, provider-fetched prerequisites, ancestry, and the provider ref lease before pushing. The App credential stays on the backend. The Unix socket shim and push helper are included in the CLI package.

At this head I independently ran the focused CLI suites (15/15), backend route/service/model suites (63/63), and the native macOS probe (own socket, known sibling, proxy-off control, restarted sibling, stale endpoint: PASS). Fetched main 8768703 is an ancestor, merge-tree is clean, and diff check is clean. I found no scoped code defect.

This is a code gate, not a merge clearance. The exact-head version guard is red: CLI 0.1.137 is already claimed by older open PR #2442; the next version needs a new CI run. Rhea's security gate and the real adapter two-seat/staging branch-to-PR walk are outside this code review. A code-touching push spends this stamp.

#2546 SECURITY GATE: HOLD at 97a46cd

Two shared-broker policy gaps block this security gate.

  1. Enforce the push rate limit on every transport. backend/routes/mcpGrants.ts:115 reserves the two-per-minute token/grant budget only on /:grantId/push. The same github.push_branch definition is registered in the shared catalogue and callable through the existing MCP /:grantId endpoint, whose handler calls callTool without this reservation. toolBrokerService.ts:1502 only applies optional grant-defined budgets. My actual Express/MCP handler + actual broker probe sent three tools/call requests for the same autonomous-write grant in one minute: all three returned successful tool results and invoked the push boundary, with no two-call budget reservation. Auth, grant/model I/O and provider push were stubbed; the handler, SDK transport and broker ran. The existing /push refusal test passes, so the gap is the alternate entry point, not the limiter implementation. Put the mandatory budget at a shared enforcement boundary, carry trusted token identity where needed, and test mixed /push + MCP calls plus approved-write execution. A grant without an optional budget must not erase D13's mandatory limits.

  2. Keep PR branch ownership in the shared tool and approval execution. backend/routes/mcpGrants.ts:144 rejects a PR head outside seat/<authenticated agent>/, but toolBrokerService.ts:330–358 only checks general branch syntax. Through actual callTool, agent A can propose github.create_pull_request for seat/agent-b/work; it returns approval_required, rather than the route's branch_not_owned_by_seat. Actual executeApprovedToolCall with the pinned repo and matching argument digest then invokes the App PR method for that sibling branch and returns ok. Approval remains required: this is not an autonomous PR-write claim. It is a bypass of the ownership restriction enforced by the new CLI route. Validate ownership before proposing and again at execution using the trusted agent identity; retain own-branch and valid-approval positive controls, and exercise the MCP/shared path rather than only the route mock.

Additional findings:

  • backend/services/seatGithubPush.ts:146: oldOid !== baseOid skips fetching the current seat ref precisely when it is the bundle prerequisite. If that commit is not on the default branch, a valid fast-forward bundle based on the provider's current seat tip fails bundle_base_not_in_provider. I reproduced this through the complete pushSeatBranch function with real Git and a temporary local provider repo; only the provider URL and token service were substituted. Fetch/verify the current target objects even when old equals base. The shipped helper currently bases on origin/main, so this is an additional accepted-wire-shape defect rather than a claim that every helper push fails.
  • toolBrokerService.ts:1192: actual SeatPushError('non_fast_forward', 409) is recorded as outcome failed, although its reason survives as non_fast_forward. Classify policy refusals separately from upstream failure; my trail assertion fails at that distinction.
  • The ToolCall INSERT/SELECT and retrofit changed. The added test mocks pool.query and checks SQL text. Checklist 55 still calls for a real-Postgres service arm covering create/list and an existing-table retrofit. I did not execute that tier: no local psql was found and Docker's daemon socket was unavailable.

Evidence and scope:

  • Full merge-base diff reviewed: 21 files, +1642/-18, base/main 876870378cced04691fb90e9b35a14629c2b5b21; diff check clean. Read REVIEW and applied checklist 56. Reviewed the complete D13 change and the surrounding broker/approval/MCP paths. The initial requested 9299d98f moved only through package-version edits to this head; all 21 changed files in the test archive byte-match the fetched head.
  • Own focused runs on Node 22: four supplied backend suites 63/63, two supplied CLI suites 15/15, both --detectOpenHandles, no force exit. The 65 backend count in the author report is not my result.
  • Own additional tests: 6 failed, 3 passed across nine assertions/cases. Failures cover PR proposal ownership, approved execution ownership, direct-broker and actual HTTP/MCP push limits, refusal classification, and the current-tip bundle prerequisite. Passing full-service real-Git controls cover normal fast-forward, fresh branch with absence lease, and divergent update refusal with unchanged provider ref.
  • Removing only the trusted old-to-new ancestry check makes the divergent full-service control fail because the push succeeds; source restored byte-for-byte, and restored controls rerun. No production-workspace edits.
  • Auth, storage and provider APIs were stubbed in broker tests; Git composition used real local repositories and a dummy token, with GitHub URLs mapped to the local remote. No live GitHub write, model turn, real adapter two-seat walk, staging walk, or production change. The native macOS socket result remains author/Vera evidence, not my own rerun. TASK-280 adapter activation is explicitly outside this PR's implementation; these findings concern the backend surface already exposed here.
  • Vera's code PASS at 5d01de1c is a separate gate. This review does not certify CI, deployment, or the pending staging walk.

CODE GATE: HOLD at 97a46cd — correction to my PASS review 5634692327

My PASS at 5d01de1 was wrong on code correctness. The current head changes only CLI version 0.1.137 to 0.1.138; both defects were already present in the head I reviewed.

  1. backend/routes/mcpGrants.ts:115–120 reserves the mandatory two-pushes-per-minute token/grant budget only in the /push route. github.push_branch is also callable through the MCP tools/call handler at mcpGrants.ts:239, which calls the shared toolBrokerService.callTool without that reservation. An autonomous-write grant with no optional budget can therefore push repeatedly through MCP. Move mandatory accounting to a shared execution boundary and test mixed transports.

  2. backend/routes/mcpGrants.ts:144 checks that PR head belongs to the authenticated seat only for /cli. The shared github.create_pull_request definition at toolBrokerService.ts:330–358 accepts another seat's syntactically valid branch; executeApprovedToolCall reuses that definition and can perform the App write after approval. Apply the seat-prefix check before parking and again before approved execution, with the trusted agent id.

Rhea's independent security review 5634707143 reproduced both through real handler/broker probes and also identified a current-tip bundle fetch rejection, refusal-trail misclassification, and missing real-Postgres coverage. I independently checked the named-ref routes and shared broker flow and the version-only delta. My 15 CLI / 63 backend tests and native socket probe from the earlier review remain accurate, but those suites do not exercise the bypasses. They cannot support a PASS. Re-gate after the code and tests change.

#2546 SECURITY CLEARED at dbac118

The findings in security HOLD 5634707143 are closed at this head.

  • Mandatory push budgets now run inside both shared broker execution paths. Own actual HTTP/MCP + broker probes confirm two successful calls and refusal of the third. A mixed sequence of /push, MCP tools/call, and approved execution shares the limit; resetting the test budget permits approved execution. Middleware supplies token identity, and seat/grant limits remain present for tokenless approved calls.
  • PR head ownership is checked before proposing approval and again during execution. Own sibling-branch cases now refuse with branch_not_owned_by_seat and make no provider call. Supplied own-branch approval/execution controls pass.
  • The complete push service now accepts an incremental bundle based on the provider's current seat tip. Own real-Git controls also pass for normal fast-forward, fresh branch with an absence lease, and divergent update refusal with unchanged provider ref.
  • Actual broker audit now records SeatPushError('non_fast_forward', 409) as refused. Provider-failure classification retains its supplied control.
  • The missing real-PostgreSQL arm was added and I ran it locally against a temporary PostgreSQL 17.10 server: 2/2 pass for model insert/list, fresh-table DDL, and existing-table retrofit. The temporary server was stopped afterward. This was real PostgreSQL, not pg-mem.

Independent validation: four supplied backend unit suites 67/67 pass; two own boundary/composition suites 10/10 pass; the new service suite 2/2 pass. All local runs used Node 22, --detectOpenHandles, and no forced exit. The initial mixed-transport test failed because my old grant-service stub rejected list operations and omitted the list predicate; the corrected harness passes. That setup failure is not a product finding. The temporary PostgreSQL package also needed its supplied library-symlink hydration before startup; no test result is claimed from the failed startup.

Six independent temporary mutations each fail the intended assertion: remove the ordinary-call push budget, remove the approved-call budget, remove proposal ownership, remove execution ownership, remove policy-refusal classification, or restore the old conditional current-tip fetch. All production source bytes were restored; both own suites then passed again. Prior ancestry-mutation evidence carries because that check is unchanged.

Scope: full merge-base diff is 22 files (+1869/-23), base/main 8768703. Prior full review carries with the complete seven-file correction (+249/-27) read; the final commit only removes three trailing spaces from the service test. Rubric/checklist unchanged, diff check clean, and all 22 changed archive files match this head. The prior CLI 15/15 result carries on byte-identical CLI files; I did not rerun those suites here.

Broker probes use actual handlers, MCP transport, and broker logic with auth/model/budget/provider I/O stubbed. Git probes use actual service logic and real local repositories, with the GitHub URL mapped to the local provider and a dummy token. The PostgreSQL service test uses the actual ToolCall model and a real local server. Native socket confinement remains author/Vera evidence, not my own rerun. No live GitHub write, staging walk, actual adapter activation, or production certification is claimed.

Keep draft for the already-required real staging branch/test/push/PR walk and exact-head CI. TASK-280 adapter activation remains separate. CI was still running at this check; this is the security gate, not a deployment clearance. Fetched and live PR heads match the SHA above.

#2546 CODE GATE: PASS at dbac118

This supersedes my HOLD at 97a46cd and the erroneous earlier PASS at 5d01de1. I reviewed the seven-file security-fix delta and the final whitespace-only commit against named refs. The push budget now runs in the shared broker for HTTP, MCP, and approved execution, with per-seat and per-grant two-per-minute entries even when no token hash is available. The authenticated seat owns a PR head at both proposal and approved execution. The push path fetches the current provider ref even when its OID equals the declared base; client-side non-fast-forward errors audit as refusals.

At the fix head, four focused backend suites passed 67/67 locally. Replacing only the broker with the prior HOLD version made all three new broker controls fail: sibling PR proposal returned approval_required, a third push succeeded, and a 409 push error audited as failed; restoring the source returned 3/3 green. The native Git current-tip prerequisite test passed in the focused suite. The final dbac118e commit changes only three trailing spaces in the real-Postgres test. git diff --check and merge-tree are clean against main 876870378cced04691fb90e9b35a14629c2b5b21.

Exact-head CI passed backend shards, type check/lint, CLI/MCP, E2E, CodeQL and the real-DB service tier. The service log includes toolCallProviderRef.test.js PASS, with 61/61 suites and 606/606 tests overall. The kind smoke job was pending at filing. Rhea's separate security clearance is review 5634843217. The real adapter two-seat and staging walk remain release checks; this code gate does not certify them. Any code-touching push needs a new gate.

#2546 CODE GATE: PASS at ed08484

This delta gate carries my code PASS at dbac118e310bd38530e4e095ebb53e77159841da (review 5634849983). I fetched current main bf0bd5930585caf42892ade534b39fa53eb5490b and this exact PR head together. The feature patch against each base has the same stable patch ID when the CLI package and lockfile version fields are excluded. Range-diff shows the broker implementation and tests carried through the rebase; the differing commits are CLI version reservations and rebased context in the socket check. The current package and lockfile both say 0.1.140, one step after main's 0.1.139.

New main touched backend/config/schema.sql and backend/server.ts, but its additions are separate from the broker's tool-call columns and scoped push parser mount. Main is an ancestor of this head, merge-tree is clean, and git diff --check passes. The PR is open, draft, and mergeable. Kai reports 66/66 focused backend broker tests and 15/15 focused CLI tests at this head; I did not rerun them for this patch-identical delta. Exact-head CI was pending at filing. Connector-ops's CLI lane and the real adapter two-seat/staging walk remain separate release checks. A code-touching push spends this gate.

#2546 SECURITY CLEARED at ed08484

The security clearance from review 5634843217 carries across this rebase. Range-diff shows the functional patches unchanged; the former package-version commits are replaced by the final 0.1.140 reservation. All broker, push service, model, CLI implementation, security probe and test files are byte-identical to the cleared dbac118 head. The server and schema differences come from main (session guards, error middleware, computer route and message freshness); the PR's mounting/body-limit and ToolCall changes remain intact. Main's CLI teardown setup is retained.

I ran the exact-head focused tests on Node 22 with --detectOpenHandles and no forced exit: four backend suites, 67/67 pass in 11.915 seconds; two CLI suites, 15/15 pass in 3.971 seconds. The backend run includes real local Git push composition, with provider boundaries stubbed. My count includes the one-test ToolCall retrofit suite; the author's 66 is not the total of these four suites.

Prior independent HTTP/MCP/shared-budget and ownership probes, real-Git ancestry/current-tip controls, six corrective mutations plus the earlier ancestry mutation, and real-PostgreSQL 17.10 insert/list/retrofit proof remain carried evidence on unchanged code. I did not rerun those additional probes or PostgreSQL here. Native same-UID socket confinement remains author/Vera evidence. No actual adapter activation, live GitHub write, staging walk or production change is certified by this review.

Full scope remains 22 files, +1869/-23, merge-base bf0bd59. Read the rebase delta and PR body, verified functional replay and archive bytes, and checked the complete diff for whitespace errors. REVIEW.md and the checklist are unchanged. Live head matched before filing. The PR remains draft for the separate CLI lane/staging requirements; this is a security restamp, not release authorization. PR evidence should distinguish the current head from the retained dbac118 proof.

Walkthrough

This change adds host GitHub CLI operations and seat-branch pushes through a per-seat broker. The backend validates requests, applies grants and rate limits, executes GitHub operations, and records provider repository and ref details.

Changes: Seat-scoped GitHub operations

Layer / File(s) Summary
GitHub tools and call records
backend/services/githubAppService.ts, backend/services/toolBrokerService.ts, backend/models/ToolCall.ts, backend/config/schema.sql, backend/__tests__/service/*, backend/__tests__/unit/models/*, backend/__tests__/unit/services/toolBrokerService.test.js
Adds pull-request creation, pull-request comments, and comment-only reviews. Tool-call records now store provider repository and ref fields.
Seat-branch push validation and execution
backend/services/seatGithubPush.ts, backend/services/toolBrokerService.ts, backend/Dockerfile, backend/__tests__/unit/services/seatGithubPush.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/toolBrokerService.test.js
Adds bounded bundle validation, provider-history checks, and lease-guarded pushes. The broker applies push budgets and records provider details. The backend image installs Git.
Host broker and authenticated routes
cli/src/lib/host-gh-broker.js, cli/src/lib/host-gh-shim.mjs, backend/routes/mcpGrants.ts, backend/server.ts, cli/__tests__/host-gh-broker.test.mjs, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/mcpGrants.hostGh.test.js

Explanation

The title "Broker GitHub operations for confined host seats" matches the main change. The PR adds a per-spawn Unix-socket broker that routes confined seats' GitHub operations (PR create/view/comment, review comments, issue comments, and seat-branch pushes) through the existing backend grant broker. The title is short, specific, and free of file lists or vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is directly related to the changeset. It covers the per-spawn socket design, the allowlisted gh operations, the bounded push bundle and seat-branch checks, the protected-path push guard, the validation evidence, and the pending supervised staging walk. The description is detailed and on-topic.

SECURITY gate for #2546 (TASK-284, P0) at c6c8bf6, the head Kai named in pod message 83543. The gate is on the live head: gh pr view headRefOid = c6c8bf6, draft, OPEN, base main. Diff against origin/main: 20 files, 1866 insertions, 20 deletions.

Verdict: HOLD. The seat push path has no check on which paths a seat's bundle may change. A seat can therefore push a modified .github/workflows/* file to its own branch. The repo's pull_request workflows run on same-repo branches with repo secrets, and they use the PR head's copy of the workflow file.

Defect.

  • backend/services/seatGithubPush.ts: parseSeatPushArgs checks the ref namespace (refs/heads/seat//…), the OID shapes and the bundle's base64 form. validateSeatBundle checks that the bundle advertises exactly newOid, that it verifies and unbundles, that connectivity holds, and that baseOid and oldOid are ancestors. pushWithLease sets the compare-and-swap. None of these inspects the tree or the changed paths. git grep -E "workflows|\.github/|name-only" over the PR head finds nothing in seatGithubPush.ts, toolBrokerService.ts, routes/mcpGrants.ts or git-remote-commonly.mjs.
  • The workflows that matter, from origin/main: tests.yml, secret-scan.yml, playwright.yml, release-safety.yml and others declare pull_request: with no branch filter. Same-repo PR runs receive repository secrets. Where a PR exists, a synchronize event (any push to its head branch) runs the head's copy of the workflow.
  • Path to exploit: (1) the seat opens a PR, which needs a human approval (github.create_pull_request is write-with-confirm); (2) the seat then pushes further commits through github.push_branch, which has requiredWriteMode 'write' and no approval. Those commits can change a workflow step to read and send out secrets. The human approved the PR, not the later commits, and the workflow change never reaches an approval.
  • What I could not verify: whether the GitHub App's installation token lacks the workflows permission, which GitHub enforces on pushes that change workflow files. If it lacks it, the push is refused at GitHub. The repo should not depend on an App permission that I cannot see from here, and the seat-side check is cheap. Not measured.

Fix requested before PASS.

  1. In pushSeatBranch, after the bundle unbundles and before pushWithLease, refuse any bundle whose tree changes touch .github/workflows/, .github/actions/, or .github/CODEOWNERS. Use git diff --name-only <oldOid or baseOid> <newOid> on the fresh bare repo. Return a 403 with a stable code (for example path_not_allowed), and do not run the push. Apply it in the same place for the approved-execution path, which re-runs the same definition.
  2. Test: a bundle that adds or edits .github/workflows/x.yml is refused and no provider push is made. A mutant that removes the check must turn that test red.

Checked and sound.

  • The seat cannot choose the repository. connection.owner and connection.repo come from the grant's pinned connection, and pushSeatBranch rejects an unsafe owner or repo.
  • Credentials stay out of the seat. The provider token is set only in the backend's git env (extraheader, GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM, GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL=/dev/null, redirects off). Git stderr is not reflected to the seat (failure replaced by a fixed code). The git remote helper contains no provider credential; it sends the runtime token only to the trusted socket owner.
  • The host-gh shim is fixed-operation only (pr.create, pr.view, pr.comment, pr.review_comment, issue.comment). It has no path to merge or close. pr.review_comment is COMMENT-only. PR creation pins the head to the seat's own branch in both the route and the tool (assertOwnedSeatBranch), and prepareApproval and call both check it.
  • The grant gate (listToolsForGrant) runs before each call. The per-seat, per-grant and per-token budgets apply to pushes and to host GH calls. The 9 MiB parser is scoped to /api/mcp/grants/:grantId/push, behind a per-IP limit.
  • providerRef and providerRepo are recorded on ToolCall only for push_branch.

Not run in this gate: the PR's own suites, the Linux socket probe (cli/scripts/security/verify-host-gh-socket.mjs), and mutations. I read the code paths and grepped the workflow triggers; I did not execute the push path against GitHub. Not covered: live CI, CodeRabbit state, the staging walk (already held by Kai), and the App's installed permissions.

Non-blocking.

  • github.push_branch has no human approval by design. The server-side ref and ancestry checks carry the load; the path check above should be part of that.
  • pushBodyRateLimit keys on cloudflareIpRateLimitKeyGenerator. If the backend is reachable without the edge, the header is client-set and the 20/min budget can be bypassed. The 9 MiB cap still applies.

GATE: HOLD: github.push_branch has no path check, so a seat can push workflow-file changes to a branch with an open PR, and the repo's pull_request workflows run them with secrets.

Rhea HOLD #2546 (review) fixed at f22c765. Before pushWithLease, bundle validation refuses .github/workflows, .github/actions and CODEOWNERS edits (403 push_protected_path). Both final diff and introduced history are checked with NUL delimiters and no rename detection, covering rename/delete/reverted edits too. Real-Git push proof 15/15; protected cases assert no provider push and unchanged refs. Disabling the guard lets the workflow case push and kills its refusal assertion. Scoped lint/diff pass. Fresh code/security review and CI required; staging walk remains held.

Match the exact ref in ls-remote output. Another seat can poison the old-OID lookup.

git ls-remote <url> <pattern> matches the pattern against the tail of a ref name. safeRef permits refs/heads/seat/B/refs/heads/seat/A/work, so seat B can create a ref that matches seat A's query.

If seat A's ref does not exist, the query can return seat B's OID. The code then uses that OID for validation and the lease, which can reject seat A's branch creation.

Apply the exact-match parse to both current and latest.

Suggested fix
-    const current = await git(['ls-remote', url, ref]);
-    const oldOid = current ? current.split(/\s+/, 1)[0] : ZERO_OID;
+    const exactOid = (out: string) => out.split('\n')
+      .map((line) => line.split('\t'))
+      .find(([, name]) => name === ref)?.[0] || ZERO_OID;
+    const oldOid = exactOid(await git(['ls-remote', url, ref]));

Apply the same exact-match parse to latest in pushWithLease.

Do not hardcode refs/remotes/origin/main for the base.

Every push reaches this lookup. A checkout without that ref can fail before the broker call. The current test creates refs/remotes/origin/main explicitly, but the broker setup does not provision it.

Resolve the checkout's configured remote-tracking default branch, including its remote name, before computing baseOid. Do not assume origin/main.

The backend does not require baseOid to be the default-branch merge base. It requires the object to exist in the provider repository and to be an ancestor of newOid.

Bound the provider fetch before the 45-second timeout.

pushSeatBranch initializes an empty bare repository, then fetchProviderObjects fetches defaultRef without --depth or --filter. Git can therefore download the full reachable history and blobs for the default branch on every push. The Git wrapper applies a 45-second timeout, and a timeout becomes provider_git_failed (502).

Fetch only the objects required for validation, such as baseOid and the seat tip with --filter=blob:none. Alternatively, use a bounded shallow fetch and deepen it only when the ancestry check cannot decide.

Allow bounded pushes whose history lists more than 64 KiB of paths.

If a bundle contains many small files or repeated edits, this git log output can exceed the Git wrapper’s 64 KiB maxBuffer. Node then terminates the command. The wrapper returns provider_git_failed (502), so the seat cannot push an otherwise valid bundle. Increase the bounded output allowance or inspect paths through a streaming process with an explicit limit. (nodejs.org)

Test a protected pathname that contains a newline.

Add a mutation-sensitive merge regression test.

A merge followed by an ordinary restoration is insufficient. The restoration commit still appears in git log --name-only, so removing --diff-merges=first-parent would still trigger refusal.

Create a merge commit that edits the protected path, then a second merge commit that restores it. Assert refusal, no provider update, and an unchanged provider ref. No inspected test covers this merge-only path.

SECURITY re-gate for #2546 (TASK-284, P0) at f22c765, the head Kai's fix named (pod message 83559). Live head check: headRefOid = f22c765, draft, OPEN, base main. This re-gates the HOLD at c6c8bf6 (review 5638258474). Delta c6c8bf6..f22c765: 2 files, +68/-2 (seatGithubPush.ts, seatGithubPush.test.js).

Verdict: PASS, on the code read at this head. Mutations were not run here. The PR's Real-Git tests were not run in this gate.

The HOLD: pushSeatBranch had no check on which paths a seat's bundle may change, so a seat could push a modified .github/workflows/* file to a branch with an open PR, and same-repo pull_request workflows would run it with repo secrets.

The fix (seatGithubPush.ts, validateSeatBundle, after the ancestry checks).

  • The changed-path set is git diff --name-only -z --no-renames baseline newOid, with baseline = oldOid, or baseOid for a new branch.
  • A second set is git log --format= --name-only -z --no-renames --diff-merges=first-parent baseline..newOid. This catches an edit that a later commit reverts, and paths touched by merge resolutions.
  • Any name matching ^\.github(/(workflows|actions)(/|$)|$) or (^|/)CODEOWNERS$ (case-insensitive) throws SeatPushError push_protected_path, 403.
  • validateSeatBundle is the only caller of the check, and it runs before pushWithLease. pushSeatBranch (line 177) is the only path that reaches pushWithLease (line 180), so the approved-execution path is covered by the same call.

Checked.

  • Rename and deletion are both covered, since --no-renames reports both sides as the file path. A newline or unusual character in a name is handled by -z.
  • A workflow edit reverted in a later commit still trips the check, because the history set includes every new commit.
  • No pull_request_target trigger exists on main. The reviewed pull_request workflows are contents:read, and the repo's default workflow token is read. No pull_request workflow references secrets. Those facts mean the path denylist closes the channel that a seat can reach. The one workflow with statuses:write (coderabbit-threads) never checks out PR code.
  • A symlink cannot redirect a workflow read, because GitHub reads workflows from the literal .github/workflows path in the head tree.
  • The mutation test in the PR was described as a guard-disabled mutant that goes red. I did not run it in this gate.

Not run in this gate: the PR's suites, the mutation, and any push against GitHub. Not covered: the staging walk (already held by Kai), live CI, CodeRabbit state, and the App's installed permissions.

Non-blocking.

  1. The denylist names the workflow and CODEOWNERS paths only. The invariant that matters is that no secret-bearing run executes seat-edited code. That holds today because the reviewed workflows reference no secrets and hold read tokens. If a workflow later adds a secret or a write token, the path list must be revisited for repo code the workflow runs. A one-line note in the workflow header or in this file would make that visible.

Sable CODE gate: kai/task284-github-broker at f22c765c (#2546, draft): PASS

Delta from c6c8bf6 (Rhea's security HOLD head): backend/services/seatGithubPush.ts +15 and its test +55. The fix runs a name check after the existing ancestry checks and before pushWithLease. It inspects the net diff with --no-renames -z, plus every commit's names in baseline..newOid with --diff-merges=first-parent, so renames, deletes, newline names and edits reverted later in the bundle are all covered. The regex matches .github/workflows, .github/actions and any CODEOWNERS, case-insensitively.

Verification at f22c765:

  • Node 22, seatGithubPush.test.js: 15/15 pass. Eight of them are the protected-path cases (workflows, actions, CODEOWNERS in three positions, rename, delete, revert).
  • Mutation: turning the refusal into a no-op fails 8 of those tests. Restored.
  • Probed the fresh-branch case where baseOid == newOid. That range is empty, so the check sees nothing. It is not reachable through pushSeatBranch: the receiver is a per-request mkdtemp repo, and baseOid must already exist there from the default-branch fetch before the bundle is unbundled. Hardening, not a blocker: use the default-branch head as the fresh-branch baseline, which removes the dependency on that invariant.

Security is Rhea's gate on this head; this is the code gate only.
