TASK-406: layer 1 system-action line

Adds a structured system-action message subtype for a fresh task claim. The kernel persists the row and broadcasts it to the pod socket; v2 renders the approved quiet line with a 16px avatar, actor, action/object and time, without message controls. Lease renewals emit no duplicate line. These rows do not advance sidebar unread/last-message state, Activity unread or recent-chat ordering.

Only task claim is wired as the layer-1 proof. Other event types and consecutive-line folding are outside this PR.

Authorization and gates

Lily's pod message85275 records Cofounder approval under Sam's D77 delegation and ux-lead's PASS/390+1440 preview. The old no-merge instruction is superseded. Normal press after fresh code gate, CI and answered CodeRabbit threads.

Current head: 70e4282, rebased onto main cf41644. Visual unchanged from approved preview. All existing CodeRabbit findings are addressed in one linked-disposition comment.

Current local proof

  • Backend system writer / Activity / SQL-filter suites: 6/6, including real pg-mem persistence.
  • Freshness unit + real Mongo suites:16/16. Regression red before fix, green after; ordinary peer chat still holds. PostgreSQL trigger/service case added for CI; not run locally.
  • Both send-time holds and omitted-read cursor checks exclude quiet system actions in PG and Mongo.
  • Frontend message row / layout / zh guards: 278/278.
  • Touched backend ESLint: no errors (existing warnings).
  • git diff --check clean.
  • Frontend typecheck exited143 without diagnostics; await CI for that result.

Earlier full-suite and browser results belong to earlier heads; fresh CI and exact-head code gate are required.

Walkthrough

Successful task claims now create and broadcast a structured task-claimed system message. V2 pod chat renders it as a translated, non-interactive line. Pod preview and recent-activity queries exclude system-action messages.

Changes: Task-Claim System Action

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record and publish task claims
backend/services/systemActionLineService.ts, backend/routes/tasksApi.ts, backend/__tests__/service/tasks.claim-lease.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/systemActionLineService.test.js
After a claim succeeds, the route asynchronously records a task-claimed system message. The service inserts the message and broadcasts the persisted row to the pod room. Tests cover service behavior and claim scenarios.
Exclude system actions from activity previews
backend/controllers/podController.ts, backend/services/activityService.ts
The pod preview and activity-ranking queries omit system messages whose payload kind is system-action.
Render task-claimed messages
frontend/src/v2/hooks/useV2PodDetail.ts, frontend/src/v2/components/V2MessageRow.tsx, frontend/src/v2/v2.css, frontend/src/i18n/locales/*.json, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/*, frontend/src/i18n/__tests__/zhNumberUnitSpacing.test.ts, frontend/design-system/preview/system-action-line.html
V2 pod chat renders task-claimed system messages as translated, non-interactive lines with optional timestamps. The payload type, styles, translations, preview, and tests support the rendering.

UX-GATE: FAIL @ 2a4bb0b — the line renders, stays quiet and doesn't overflow, but its shape isn't the TASK-406 artboard's action line
Rendered by ux-lead on the fixture at the exact head (vite build, en + zh-CN, 1200 + 390). These are layout measurements, not a code review. The head moved to 2a4bb0b while I was gating. That delta only touches zhNumberUnitSpacing.test.ts and no rendered file, so these renders stand for 2a4bb0b.

What passes

  • Fresh claim → one line; renewals emit nothing (tasksApi !isSameHolderContinuation).
  • No hover actions, no reply, no reactions (0 buttons in the row).
  • Kept out of the pod "latest" ranking (activityService), and no mention enqueue.
  • No overflow: scrollWidth == clientWidth at 1200 and 390 (1200/1200, 390/390).
  • zh reads sprint-impl 认领了 TASK-406, with no wrap at 390.

What the artboard asks for, against what renders (artboard Layer 1: "One grey line per action, inside the thread, at the message text's indent… 16 px avatar, the agent's name, a verb in muted 13, an object in mono 11, time on the right")

artboard #2551 @ a798ab1 = 2a4bb0b render (1200)
horizontal position starts at the message-text column: .v2-msg__body left = 419, i.e. +36 from the row justify-content: center; text spans 516–701 inside a 383–875 box, floating mid-thread
avatar 16 px agent square before the name none
name ink, sans mono 11 tertiary (rgb 102,112,133)
verb ("claimed") sans 13, muted mono 11 tertiary
object (TASK-406) mono 11 mono 11 ✓
time right edge of the thread, mono 11 sits 8 px after the text, mid-line
name source the label the message row shows (e.g. "Sprint Impl", "Forge") resolveAuthor → instanceId (sprint-impl), so the line and the message above it name the same agent two different ways

At 390 it's the same: a centred 82–267 run inside 14–376, against a text column at 50.

Fix shape (no new tokens needed)

  1. Indent: reuse the TASK-150 slot geometry the delivery hint uses — width: calc(100% - 36px); margin-left: 36px, so the line's left edge lands on .v2-msg__body. Drop justify-content: center and text-align: center.
  2. Grid 16px auto minmax(0,1fr) auto, gap 8: 16 px avatar (the same square the row uses, at 16) · name in --v2-text-primary sans 13/500 · verb in --v2-text-tertiary sans 13 · object TASK-406 in mono 11 · time in mono 11 placeholder, pushed to the right edge.
  3. Name: send the display label (resolveAgentDisplayLabel, the chain the row uses) as actorName, or resolve it client-side from actorUserId. Don't send the raw instanceId.
  4. i18n: split the string so the verb is its own span (e.g. taskClaimedVerb: "claimed" / "认领了") and the name and object are rendered as elements. Keep the zh word order name · verb · object.
  5. Move frontend/design-system/preview/system-action-line.html with it. It currently documents the centred version, and its time colour (tertiary) already disagrees with v2.css (placeholder).

Not blocking this proof: folding a 3rd consecutive line into 3 more · … is out of scope as the PR says; it belongs to the follow-up row.

I'll re-render at 1200 + 390 (en + zh) when the head moves. The fixture is .dev/signal/serve-2551.py and it seeds two lines among normal rows.

Test the messages insert against pg-mem instead of a mocked pool.query.

The test replaces pool.query (lines 5-7) and returns a fabricated RETURNING row, so the INSERT never executes. The assertions on bound parameters and the newMessage broadcast still hold. The test does not show that the SQL runs against messages, that the $4::jsonb payload is stored and read back, or that id and created_at come from the table.

backend/TESTING.md defines Tier 0 unit tests as in-memory, with setupPgDb() providing pg-mem. Sibling tests such as messageClaimService.liveClaims.pgmem.test.js run real SQL under pg-mem and create their own tables.

Add a pg-mem test that calls emitSystemActionLine, reads the stored row back, and asserts message_type and payload. Keep the socket assertions. Create the messages table inside that test with a default for id. The shared setupPgDb() table declares id VARCHAR(24) PRIMARY KEY with no default. The INSERT omits id, so it can fail against that table as declared.

Exclude system actions from the activity messages too.

This predicate changes pod ranking, but getMessageActivities still fetches each ranked pod’s messages and converts system-action rows into feed items. A claim can therefore appear in Activity and increase its unread count. Apply the same exclusion before getMessageActivities builds activities, including before its per-pod fetch limit is spent.

UX-GATE: FAIL @ 6d7b807 — the line now follows the artboard (indent, ink name, muted verb, mono task ID, time on the right) but the avatar renders 28 px, not 16, and at 390 a long name pushes the verb and the task ID out of view
Gated by ux-lead (design seat) against the TASK-406 artboard, rendered at 1811d83 (index-CQEdKEbN) and re-rendered at this head (index-B_iIsZAr) after 6d7b807 landed mid-gate; every number below holds at both builds. Worktree build served from a local fixture, en + zh-CN at 1200 and 390. The fixture now follows this head's contract (actorName = display label, user.isBot), and adds a long-label line and a human actor.

What passes. The line starts at the text indent at both widths: line left 419 = .v2-msg__content left 419 at 1200, and 50 = 50 at 390. Right edges are 875 / 376. The name is ink rgb(16,24,40), 13 px, weight 500, sans. The verb is tertiary at 13 px; the zh string is 认领了. The task ID is mono 11 tertiary, and the time is mono 11, right-aligned. Pane scrollWidth equals clientWidth at both widths (540/540 and 390/390). A human actor renders as human; there's no green and no cobalt act.

Blocking 1 — the avatar is 28×28, not 16. .v2-system-action-line .v2-avatar (v2.css:2726, specificity 0,2,0) loses to .v2-thread .v2-avatar (v2.css:11506, also 0,2,0 but later in the file). Computed width and height are 28 on every line. The avatar overflows its 16 px track: it spans 419→447 at 1200 while the name starts at 443, a 4 px overlap. The line is 36 px tall instead of 24. jsdom can't see this; the test asserts selector text.
Fix: raise the selector, e.g. .v2-thread .v2-system-action-line .v2-avatar { width: 16px; height: 16px; } (0,3,0).

Blocking 2 — at 390 a long display label drops the verb and the task ID. Track 2 is auto, so the name takes its max-content width. On Pod Architect (Connectors Review Seat Long Label) the computed columns are 16px 266px 0px 20px. The action column collapses to 0, so claimed and the task ID are clipped away, and the line reads as a name and a time. At 1200 the same label leaves the ID 42 px wide (truncated). The line's meaning is the action, so the name has to give way first.
Fix, verified by injection at 390: grid-template-columns: 16px minmax(0, max-content) auto minmax(0, 1fr) auto with time { grid-column: 5 }. The long label truncates to 129 px and claimed TASK-12345… stays visible. Short lines are unchanged: avatar 16, line 24 tall, time right edge 376.

Non-blocking. 6d7b807's new font: 650 11px/1 mono on the avatar (v2.css:2726) loses the same way. .v2-thread .v2-avatar--flat (v2.css:12760, 0,2,0, later in the file) sets the font for both initials and images, so the line computes 12 px sans. Raising the selector fixes both rules. The preview HTML documents the new form; it will need the same column change.

Keep the system-action avatar inside its grid column.

In a V2 thread, the later .v2-thread .v2-avatar rule has equal specificity and sets this avatar to 28px. The system-action grid reserves 16px, so the avatar can overlap the actor name. Give the 16px rule higher specificity than the transcript avatar rules.

UX-GATE: FAIL @ 04021c1 — blocker 1 cleared; blocker 2 still open at 390: on a long label the verb and task ID render 0 px wide
Gated by ux-lead (Signal visual gate), fixture build of 04021c1 (index-CBt51MXQ.js) at 1200 and 390, en and zh-CN, measured in Chromium via Playwright.

Cleared

  • Avatar: 16×16 on all four lines at both widths. The .v2-thread selector wins. Line height is 24.
  • Short labels (Sprint Impl, Sprint Review, the human line) are unchanged from 6d7b807. Each line runs from the text indent to the right edge (419→875 at 1200, 50→376 at 390). Name, verb and ID sit in order, with time in the last column. There is no document or pane overflow (540/540, 390/390). The zh verb 认领了 renders.

Still failing: long label at 390, both locales
Computed tracks on the "Pod Architect (Connectors Review Seat Long Label)" line: 16px 258.188px 0px 0px 19.8125px.

  • The action box is 340→348 (8 px, which is only the gap). The verb and ID are clipped to nothing. At 390 the line reads "Pod Architect (Connectors Review Seat L… c Sun" in en and "…L… 认 Sun" in zh. A reader cannot tell what happened.
  • Cause: __action spans 3 / 5, which includes the 1fr track. The grid track-sizing algorithm ignores items that span a flexible track when it sizes the intrinsic tracks. That leaves column 3 with no content, so it stays 0. minmax(0, max-content) on the name then takes all the free space before the fr track is resolved, so column 4 gets 0 as well.
  • At 1200 the same line does not fail, but only because there is room: the ID gets 42 px ("TASK-…").

Fix (verified by injection on this build): .v2-system-action-line__action { grid-column: 3; }. Leave column 4 (minmax(0, 1fr)) empty as the spacer and keep time in column 5.

  • With that one change, column 3 sizes to the action's content. The name and the action then split the free space evenly when both overflow.
  • 390, long label: tracks 16px 129px 129px 0px 20px. Name truncates at 74→203, verb at 211→257, ID truncates at 262→340, time at 356→376. zh is the same, with 认领了 at 211→251.
  • 1200, long label: name and action both 194 px, and the ID truncates at 696→839.
  • Short lines are unchanged: the 1fr spacer takes the slack and time stays right-aligned.
  • Please also add a long-label case to the invariant test, asserting the action is not 3 / 5. A presence test cannot see a track that sizes to 0.

Evidence: before/after crops of the long line at 390 in en and zh-CN are in the pod thread. The bundle comes from the PR head, and no production API was called.

UX-GATE: PASS @ 2982434 — long labels now truncate before the action; verb and ID stay visible at 390 in en and zh-CN

Rendered by ux-lead on a local build of this head (index-C1yp4Udj.js) against the pod-sharpen fixture, 1200 and 390 px, en and zh-CN. Nothing called api.commonly.me.

The fix: .v2-system-action-line__action now sits in grid-column: 3 alone (computed 3 / auto on every line). It no longer spans the flexible track, so it counts during intrinsic sizing, and the name and the action share the free width evenly.

Long-label line ("Pod Architect (Connectors Review Seat Long Label)", TASK-1234567890-overflow-probe):

  • 390 en: tracks 16 / 129 / 129 / 0 / 20. Name 74→203 truncated, "claimed" 211→257, ID 262→340 truncated, time 356→376.
  • 390 zh-CN: same tracks. 认领了 211→251, ID 256→340 truncated, time 356→376.
  • 1200, both locales: name and action 194 px each, ID truncated at 696/690→839, time 855→875.
At 04021c1 the verb and ID were 0 px wide on this line. Both are now visible, and each truncates with an ellipsis.

Short lines (Sprint Impl, Sprint Review, human): 24 px tall, avatar 16×16, and the line runs 419→875 at 1200 and 50→376 at 390. Nothing is truncated and the time stays right-aligned. These match the previous head.

Overflow: the document has 0 px horizontal overflow, and .v2-thread measures 540/540 at 1200 and 390/390 at 390, in both locales.

These are the numbers my grid-column: 3 injection at 04021c1 predicted. Non-blocking: the TASK-406 go/no-go is still Sam's (Sat). The draft stays held, and the press is lily-shen's.

Remove the avatar from task-claim system lines.

The PR objective requires these lines to render without an avatar. V2MessageRow.tsx still emits V2Avatar, and this grid reserves and styles a 16px avatar column. Every task-claimed message therefore shows an avatar.

Remove the avatar element and grid column. Update the layout invariant, rendering test, and design preview to match.

Based on the PR objective and supplied renderer contract, task-claimed lines must not render an avatar.

Rebased onto origin/main e0ad33d and force-pushed at dea90e0. Resolved task-route context conflicts by preserving main's notifyAgents(..., preClaim) argument alongside the system-action projection. Preserved main's blocker placeholder and added the actor placeholder. Render/artboard patches are unchanged. Remains draft awaiting Sam's artboard go and fresh head gates. Rebase only; no new local tests run.

Remove the avatar from the system-action line.

The five-column grid reserves an avatar slot, and frontend/src/v2/components/V2MessageRow.tsx renders an avatar in that slot. The PR objective specifies a quiet line without an avatar. Remove the avatar from the renderer, update this grid and its layout test, and change the avatar assertion in frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2MessageRow.test.tsx. As per coding guidelines, “The change does what the PR title/description claims.”

Test the persisted actor name without a display-name override.

This test supplies Forge through agentDisplayNames, which takes precedence over payload.actorName. The Forge assertion still passes if the renderer stops reading payload.actorName. Add a test with no override and with actorName distinct from user.username; assert that the line shows the payload name. As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test (rule 1).”

UX-GATE: PASS @ dea90e0 — rebase onto e0ad33d re-rendered; every line measures as at my PASS @ 2982434

Credit: ux-lead (visual gate), fixture serve-2551 over a build of dea90e0 (index-pvUaO49W), 1200 + 390, en + zh-CN.

Why a re-render and not a carry: the scoped patch-id (frontend, tests excluded) is unchanged (905577e6 at both heads), but main moved V2MessageRow.tsx, v2.css and both locale files underneath this PR.

Measured at dea90e0:

  • Every system-action line is 24 tall with a 16×16 avatar, and the action sits in grid-column: 3.
  • At 390, the long line runs 16/129/129/0/20; name and ID truncate; verb 211→257 (zh 211→251); time 356→376.
  • Document and pane scrollWidth equal clientWidth at both widths.
  • These numbers are identical to the 2982434 run (crops g2551e-* vs g2551d-*).

Rebased onto main cf41644; current head d254470. Both locale conflicts kept main's firstTask formatting and added the systemActions keys.

CodeRabbit dispositions in one comment:

Local proof at this head: backend 3 focused suites 6/6; frontend message-row/layout/zh suites 278/278; scoped backend ESLint no errors (37 existing warnings); git diff --check clean. Frontend typecheck process exited 143 without diagnostics, so no local typecheck PASS is claimed. Fresh CI/CodeRabbit running. Please bind the new code gate to d254470; the visual is unchanged from the approved preview.

Code gate at d254470 (rebased onto cf41644, TASK-406 system action line).

HOLD. A claim line writes a messages row that every agent's send-time freshness check counts as an unseen message, which contradicts the invariant the new service states.

What happens:

  • backend/config/schema.sql installs a BEFORE INSERT trigger on messages that assigns freshness_revision to every row, including the row emitSystemActionLine inserts.
  • backend/services/agentSendFreshness.ts unseenMessages (PG path) counts rows where freshness_revision > cursor and user_id IS DISTINCT FROM <agent>. It has no message_type or payload.kind exclusion. The Mongo fallback in unseenFromMongo has none either.
  • Scenario: agent A has read the pod at revision 40. Agent B claims TASK-406, so the system row lands at revision 41 with user_id = B. A's next post to the pod returns 409 unseen_messages ("There is 1 unseen message") until A reads the pod again. Every claim in a busy pod imposes that cost on every other agent.
  • The service header says the row "cannot create mention attention, wake agents, or advance a pod's human-message unread timestamp". It does not mention the send hold, and no test covers it.

Why the tests miss it: the persistence test in systemActionLineService.test.js creates a pg-mem messages table without freshness_revision and without the trigger, so the real write path is never exercised.

Requested fix (one head):

  1. Exclude kind = 'system-action' rows from agentSendFreshness.unseenMessages: an AND NOT (m.message_type = 'system' AND COALESCE(m.payload->>'kind', '') = 'system-action') predicate on the PG query, and the matching $nor on the Mongo query.
  2. Add a unit test that a system-action row at a higher revision yields no hold, and that a human or agent row at that revision still does.
  3. Either add freshness_revision and the trigger to the pg-mem schema in the persistence test, or add a service-tier test on real PG so the trigger runs.

Verified and fine:

  • Claim route emits only after the claim CAS commits, as a fire-and-forget best effort. Claim HTTP result is unaffected.
  • Activity and the PG/Mongo pod-listing paths exclude system-action rows before LIMIT. Unread and activity-hint queries already filter message_type != 'system'.
  • Actor name is rendered as React text, not HTML.
  • The i18n placeholder exemption (actor) is a plain addition, not a weakened assertion.

Not gated here: CI, CodeRabbit threads, and the UX gate for the layout. The layout rules are presence tests only; the PR body defers browser proof to fresh heads.

Sable HOLD #2551 (review) is addressed in 70e4282.

Both PG and Mongo now exclude rows matching message type system + payload kind system-action from send-time counts/previews AND omitted-read checks. The latter prevents a quiet line from blocking cursor advancement when ordinary chat was read. Ordinary peer text and kernel-authored messages of other kinds keep their existing hold behavior.

Freshness unit plus real Mongo suites:16/16, after 3 regression assertions failed before the fix. The real Mongo case verifies no hold from a claim line, read-cursor advancement without returning that line, then a hold from ordinary peer chat. PostgreSQL query tests pin the exclusion before count/preview limits; a new real-PG service case calls emitSystemActionLine under the schema's trigger, checks that its revision advanced, and exercises both controls. That service case is committed for CI but not run locally. Previous writer/Activity checks and frontend proof remain unchanged.

Please re-gate exact head 70e4282 after the service CI result. Earlier CodeRabbit dispositions remain in #2551 (comment).

Re-gate at 70e4282 (fix: ignore quiet system action lines). Closes the HOLD at d254470.

Delta since d254470: one commit, 70e4282. It touches agentSendFreshness.ts and three test files. Nothing else.

Checked:

  • PG unseenMessages and omittedMessages both exclude rows where message_type = 'system' and payload kind = 'system-action'. The predicate is in the WHERE clause, before LIMIT.
  • Mongo unseenFromMongo and the omitted-read query both carry $nor on the same shape. Ordinary peer chat and kernel rows still hold.
  • Ran in a scratch worktree at 70e4282: agentSendFreshness, systemActionLineService and activityService.agentMessages, 14/14.
  • Red before, green after: with the old agentSendFreshness.ts swapped in, the new exclusion test fails, and so does the updated counts test that now pins the $nor. With the fix restored, 10/10 pass.
  • The claim-line row is still written with a freshness revision, and the cursor still advances past it. Only the send hold and the omitted-read count ignore it, so the claim line is not counted as unseen.

Not run here: the real-PG trigger case (agentSendFreshnessCommitFence.test.js), because it needs the service-tier database. The service CI job was still queued at this head. The PASS below is on code; the service job is a merge gate and needs to be green before the press.

Minor, non-blocking: the new unit it body in agentSendFreshness.test.js is not indented to match the surrounding describe block.
