TASK-420

A revoked machine left a daemon's local credential in a dead end. commonly daemon register can replace it after the daemon-scoped self route explicitly proves revocation or removal. daemon unregister removes local state after an owner-session 401/403 only when the stored daemon key independently proves that state. A still-live or uncertain key remains in the private 0600 file. Status names the recovery command without printing the token.

The security correction rejects ambiguous proof: HTML 404, a successful empty JSON response, an HTML app shell, and a machine identity mismatch cannot authorize replacement or cleanup. A 404 must carry the backend's exact Machine not found message; a successful response must carry the registered machine identity.

After a machine key is revoked, daemon run stops all seats, records a private terminal marker without the bearer, and exits 77. A new registration clears the marker. Configuration errors exit 78; unexpected startup or scheduled runtime errors exit 75. systemd excludes 77 and 78 from restarts. launchd restarts a nonzero terminal exit once, then sees the marker and exits successfully to park. Work-list and heartbeat failures use jittered reconnect; all poll and crash-restart paths share a limit of three agent starts per five seconds.

  • CLI version 0.1.147 is reserved in package and lockfile, above current main's 0.1.142; the previous release-time version hold is resolved.
  • After rebase, the focused daemon, service and supervisor suites pass 107/107; the six daemon implementation commits are unchanged and git diff --check passes.
  • Sable CODE PASS 5637393402 and Rhea SECURITY PASS 5637423656 were verified at the prior head 0735a0c1. This rebase preserves all six daemon implementation commits, with only the CLI version conflict resolved to 0.1.147; exact-head restamps are requested. Lily's CLI lane gate 5637378722 also predates the rebase.
  • Required CI and the version guard are rerunning at this head. Merge and release remain Lily's press after those checks and exact-head gates clear.

Existing installations must run commonly daemon install again to load the revised service policy.

#2562 TASK-420 at exact head e218ea6 — CODE HOLD

The revoked-key recovery path is close, but the daemon-key probe does not require affirmative proof that the old credential is unusable. getDaemonMachineStatus maps a successful response without machine to null; storedDaemonState calls that missing. It also accepts any 404, regardless of the server's Machine not found message. Consequently, daemon register can overwrite the stored bearer and daemon unregister can delete it after an owner 401/403 while the old daemon credential is still live. A proxy or older server returning 200 {} or an unrelated 404 is enough. I reproduced both: a stub daemon GET returning {} makes allowRevokedDaemonReplacement return missing, and makes unregisterDaemonMachine call remove() after owner DELETE 401.

Please require the documented daemon route's specific revoked 401 or machine-not-found 404 response before replacing/removing local state; treat malformed 200 and unrelated 404 as indeterminate and preserve the credential. Add regressions for those responses to the register and unregister paths. The existing 23 CLI tests and diff check do not distinguish these cases. The CLI version check is also red at this head; the task says to bump it at press time.

Credit to @rivet for keeping the old record until replacement persistence and checking the daemon key after an owner-session failure.

#2562 SECURITY-GATE HOLD at e218ea6

The new daemon-status classifier treats an indeterminate response as proof that the stored key is safe to discard (cli/src/commands/daemon.js:130–137). Any GET 404 is classified as missing, including an HTML edge/router 404. A successful response without a truthy machine is also classified as missing, including {} or an HTML application fallback. Neither proves revocation or machine removal. The actual /api/machines/me route returns a machine on success and a specific 404 {message: 'Machine not found'} for absence.

I reproduced both consequences using the exact-head command helpers, actual HTTP client/fetch and credential store, a loopback HTTP server, dummy bearers and an isolated temporary home:

  • For each of HTML 404, JSON {} with 200, and HTML 200, replacement admitted one registration POST and overwrote the old local record.
  • Following owner DELETE 401 and 403, each same ambiguous GET response caused unregister to unlink the local record. No successful remote revocation occurred in the fixture.

All nine required-refusal assertions fail. Seven contrasting controls pass: active machine, server 500, unknown 401 and 403 preserve the record; both recognized revocation responses and the explicit machine-missing response permit recovery. This can strand a still-valid old credential while telling the operator its access is gone. Backend authorization was not run in this transport fixture; this is a client proof-classification and persistence result, not a live-server revocation test.

Require explicit endpoint-specific missing/revoked evidence, and fail closed on malformed success or generic 404. Add transport-level regression arms for both replacement and owner-401/403 cleanup, retaining valid recovery controls. A temporary repair restricted to the GET classifier made all 39 tests pass (23 existing plus 16 independent); restored the source byte-for-byte afterward. An initial repair also narrowed the existing direct DELETE-404 path and failed its bare-404 fixture; the scoped repair preserved that pre-existing behavior. This HOLD concerns the newly added GET proof path.

Read the complete three-file diff (+152/-9), surrounding commands/store/client and server contract; diff check is clean. Exact-head existing daemon suite independently passes 23/23, command ESLint passes, and CI is green at this check. Node 22 Jest used --detectOpenHandles without force exit. No production files changed; no real daemon/service restart, production API, UI or deployment exercised. CLI version remains reserved for press.

#2562 SECURITY-GATE PASS at 257c169

Closes my HOLD in review 5636540654. The daemon GET proof now requires the endpoint's exact missing-machine 404 or one of the two recognized revocation responses. A successful response must contain both matching machine identifiers and means the old key is still active; malformed or mismatching responses preserve local state. The same exact-message rule also hardens the existing direct DELETE-404 cleanup path.

Independently ran the exact-head daemon suite and actual HTTP-client/store probes: 54/54 tests pass (30 author tests, 24 independent), Node 22 Jest with detectOpenHandles, no force exit. The original nine refusal cases now preserve the record and issue no replacement POST: HTML 404, empty JSON 200 and HTML 200, including cleanup after owner DELETE 401/403. Controls retain active keys, server failures and unknown authorization failures, while explicit missing/revoked responses permit recovery. Added independent cases cover partial/array/null machine values, each identifier mismatch, direct DELETE ambiguous versus explicit 404, and 0600 file permissions. Updated the old active-machine fixture to include both identifiers and separately verified it reaches the live-key refusal.

Two independent temporary mutations fail as intended: restoring broad 404 acceptance fails four refusal tests; restoring the old permissive 200 classifier fails eleven tests, including the six original malformed-success replacement/cleanup cases. Restored production source byte-for-byte. Command ESLint passes.

Reviewed the complete two-file correction and carried the unchanged full review from e218ea6; total PR scope is three files, +197/-18. Diff check is clean; base/current main is 7d2d28f; rubric/checklist unchanged. Verified the live PR head matches this SHA. No repository production edits.

Evidence uses real command helpers, fetch, loopback HTTP and local credential storage with dummy credentials and an isolated home. Server replies are fixtures; this does not certify live backend revocation, daemon restart, UI or deployment. Keep draft for the remaining code gate/CI and reserved press-time version bump: the version guard is currently failing, CLI CI is green, and other CI is still running.

#2562 TASK-420 at exact head 257c169 — CODE PASS

Closes my HOLD in review 5636534241. The stored daemon-key probe now treats only the server's exact revoked-key 401 or Machine not found 404 as proof that replacement or local cleanup is safe. A successful status reply must contain both identifiers matching the local record; malformed 200, HTML/unrelated 404, and a different machine preserve the key. The direct owner DELETE 404 path uses the same exact-message rule. These checks match the current daemon auth and machine route responses.

The added register/unregister tests cover active, revoked, missing, and ambiguous replies. I reviewed the full three-file diff and surrounding route/client/store contracts; git diff --check passes. The CLI/MCP/runtime CI job and Test & Coverage pass. The CLI version guard remains red by the stated press-time version reservation and is separate from this code verdict. Rhea's independent security gate is PASS at this head.

Credit to @rivet for preserving the local bearer unless the daemon route proves revocation or removal, and for the recovery tests.

#2562 SECURITY GATE: PASS at 3ce26d1

The strict replacement/unregister proof from my cleared 257c169 remains intact. I reviewed the seven-file lifecycle correction, including the subsequent shared start limiter, against the full eight-file PR (412 additions, 33 deletions). No new security blocker found.

Independent verification on an exact-head temporary archive, Node 22:

  • Five Jest suites passed: 147 tests, including the author's 106 and my 24 actual HTTP/client/store proof cases plus 17 new lifecycle cases. --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, no force-exit; 1.192 s, exit 0. The lifecycle suite was then extended with the advisory observation below and passed 18/18 (0.287 s).
  • Actual command + supervisor + private filesystem store, with dummy credentials and injected API/child/timer boundaries: both recognized revoked-key 401s and explicit missing-machine 404 persist a bearer-free 0600 marker inside a 0700 directory, preserve the credential, and set 77. A second invocation makes no API request and parks on macOS. Heartbeat revocation signals all three running child fixtures with SIGTERM, cancels two queued starts, and permits no subsequent starts. Missing registration sets 78; unexpected startup failure sets 75. Marker-write failure still parks macOS. Successful registration stores the replacement before clearing the marker; failed registration retains both old key and marker. Unrelated-machine markers do not stop the current registration.
  • Unknown 401, 403, ambiguous 404, 500 and expired-token responses retain the credential without recording revocation. Reconnect delay gates both work-list and heartbeat calls until due. Initial starts, queued starts and crash retries share the three-start/five-second bound; stopped queues cannot restart.
  • Removing terminal classification caused all four targeted terminal/shutdown tests to fail. Removing the shared limiter caused the independent start-bound test to fail (seven initial starts instead of three). Both mutations were restored; all four production files were byte-compared to the reviewed commit. The previous strict-proof mutation evidence carries unchanged.
  • Changed CLI production files pass ESLint; full PR diff check is clean. Rubric/checklist are unchanged from the prior gate. Base is 7d2d28f; main at this check is 0afed7b.

Nonblocking reliability advisory: cli/src/commands/daemon.js:512-513 schedules promises without a rejection handler. The 75 catch surrounds startup only. Independently, the same malformed assigned row yields 75 on the first tick but rejects the later interval callback with no exitCode set. Route unexpected periodic failures through the cleanup/75 path, or narrow the blanket runtime-failure claim. This is not a credential-proof bypass.

Scope: actual CLI command/supervisor/store logic and separate loopback HTTP proof fixtures; API authority, model children and timers are controlled test boundaries. This does not certify real service-manager restart behavior, live credentials, actual child termination/drain, a daemon restart, browser behavior or deployment. SIGTERM remains the existing idle-boundary drain signal. Service templates were checked, not installed. CI is queued/running and the PR remains draft; this security verdict is not a version-reservation or press authorization.

#2562 at 699cfca — CODE PASS

Reviewed the delta since the prior 257c169 code gate. The terminal path persists a 0600 marker without the bearer, stops all seats, and gives launchd/systemd a non-restarting terminal outcome. Transient work-list/heartbeat failures back off with jitter; initial and crash restarts share the three-start window. Focused 106/106 CLI tests and lint are reported on this head. The release-time CLI version guard and exact-head security gate remain separate.

🎯 Functional Correctness | Major | ⚡ Quick win

A stale unregistered stop marker permanently blocks daemon run after the operator fixes the configuration error.

The badConfig path (Lines 526-538) saves a marker with machineDbId: 'unregistered' and exit code 78. This happens for insecure credential-file permissions, an invalid credential file, or an unreadable credential file. Line 419 then reads that marker before it tries to load the record. After the operator fixes the cause, for example with chmod 600, every daemon run still exits at Line 421 without loading the now-valid record.

Recovery is also blocked. The message tells the operator to run commonly daemon register. That command finds an active existing record and fails with "already registered" in allowRevokedDaemonReplacement. Only daemon unregister followed by register, or deleting stopped.json by hand, clears the marker.

Check the marker only when the record still cannot be loaded. The launchd park-after-one-retry behavior is kept, and a repaired record runs again.

No visible test covers these run-path exit codes or marker semantics. Add a test for "fix config, then run" and one for "config still broken, marker parks the second launch".

Convert the entry URL to a filesystem path.

If the checkout path contains a space or another URL-escaped character, .pathname passes an encoded path to spawnSync. Node then cannot open the CLI entry file, and this test fails before it checks exit code 78. Use fileURLToPath(new URL('../src/index.js', import.meta.url)).

Add command-level coverage for scheduled runtime failures.

After the initial supervisor.tick() and supervisor.heartbeat() calls succeed, each scheduled callback can reject. The runtimeFailure handler must clear both timers, stop the supervisor, and set process.exitCode to 75. Add separate command-level tests for scheduled poll and heartbeat rejection that assert all three outcomes.

#2562 SECURITY CLEARED at 55e6085

The two-file correction from cleared 3ce26d1 closes the periodic-exception advisory: scheduled poll and heartbeat rejections now clear both intervals, stop supervision, and select retryable exit 75. The terminal-ended guard preserves an earlier revocation verdict. The other addition executes the real CLI twice with an empty temporary HOME, verifying exit 78, the saved marker, and macOS parking on the second invocation.

Own exact-head validation: 110 tests passed across four CLI suites (107 committed tests plus three independent boundary tests), Node 22.23.1, --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, no forced exit, 0.446s. Independent tests execute the actual command and private credential/marker store with a mocked supervisor and fake timers: poll rejection and heartbeat rejection each stop once, cancel both intervals, preserve registration without a terminal marker, and prevent subsequent callbacks; a late rejection cannot overwrite exit 77. Removing the new runtime-failure stop call makes both stop assertions fail (2 failed, 1 passed); restored source passes all 110. Command ESLint passes.

The complete correction was read; full PR scope is eight files, +440/-33, diff check clean, rubric/checklist unchanged. All seven archived changed CLI files match the fetched head byte-for-byte after restoration. Prior strict HTTP proof, terminal-marker, restart-limit and ownership evidence in review 5636728135 carries for unchanged implementation. My first independent fixture omitted the required dummy-token prefix and was corrected before the quoted run; that setup failure is not a product finding.

This verifies command behavior and the committed child-process test, not installed launchd/systemd behavior, real child termination, live credentials or deployment. Keep the draft/version-press constraints; CI and CODE gates remain separate.

#2562 TASK-420 at exact head 94ca687 — CODE PASS

The delta from my CODE PASS at 55e6085 changes only cli/package.json and the two matching version fields in cli/package-lock.json, from 0.1.138 to 0.1.147. The daemon implementation and regression tests are byte-for-byte unchanged, so the prior code evidence carries. The new version is above the currently published @commonlyai/cli 0.1.139. The version guard and full CI are separate gates and were still running when I checked.

Credit to @rivet for reserving the release version without changing the validated daemon behavior.

#2562 SECURITY CLEARED at 94ca687

Version-only security restamp. The entire delta from cleared 55e6085 changes three version fields in cli/package.json and cli/package-lock.json from 0.1.138 to 0.1.147. All three agree. Executable source, dependency resolutions, tests and documentation are unchanged.

Independent exact-head validation: all 110 tests pass across daemon, daemon-service, daemon-supervisor and my periodic-error boundary suite, 1.346s, Node 22 with --experimental-vm-modules --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, no forced exit. All changed CLI files in the isolated archive match the fetched head byte-for-byte. Full PR scope remains reviewed with this two-file delta: ten files, +443/-36 against merge base 7d2d28f; diff check clean. Review rubric/checklist unchanged; live and fetched head match.

Prior security review 5636939791 and its strict HTTP proof, private credential/marker lifecycle, restart limits, ownership and periodic-failure mutation evidence carry unchanged. No new security finding. This does not certify installed launchd/systemd behavior, real child termination, live credentials, publication or deployment. CI/version guard and release press remain separate.

The PR description still names 55e6085 and pending re-reviews/version reservation; update that release bookkeeping to the current head and gates before pressing.

LANE GATE: PASS @ 94ca687

Connector lane review of cli/ (TASK-420, recovering the local daemon after its machine is revoked).

  • A revoked key (401) now ends supervision once, instead of polling forever. Exit 77/78 parks launchd through KeepAlive.SuccessfulExit=false plus the stop marker, and systemd through RestartPreventExitStatus=77 78.
  • Re-registration replaces the local record only when the server says the machine is revoked (401) or missing (JSON 404). An HTML 404, an empty 200 or a wrong-machine answer keeps the key, and the tests cover each case. The old record isn't deleted until the replacement is saved.
  • The stop marker is 0600 and never carries the bearer, and the status message names commonly daemon register without the token.
  • Reconnect delay is jittered and capped at 60 s, and agent starts are capped at three per window.
  • cli 0.1.147 is unique among open PRs.

#2562 TASK-420 at exact head 0735a0c — CODE PASS

I compared the rebased seven-commit PR with the previously code-passed head 94ca687. Git range-diff shows the six daemon recovery commits unchanged. The seventh changes only the base version from 0.1.138 to 0.1.139 while keeping the PR target at 0.1.147 in cli/package.json and both package-lock entries. The changed-file list is identical, and diff check passes. The author reports 107 focused daemon tests passing at this head.

This restamps the code gate only. The version guard and current CI are separate checks.

Credit to @rivet for the rebase and daemon regression coverage.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Escalate supervised children after a stop grace period.

The terminal-auth handler sets process.exitCode = 77, but supervisor.stop() only sends SIGTERM. A supported agent run child catches SIGTERM, sets running = false, and waits for its current turn. That turn can block in an API fetch without a timeout. If it does not settle, the child remains alive, so the daemon can remain alive and never emit exit 77. Add a bounded SIGKILL fallback for this terminal shutdown path.

#2562 SECURITY CLEARED at 0735a0c

Rebase security restamp. All ten changed files are byte-identical to cleared 94ca687. Range-diff preserves all six implementation/test commits; only the version commit context changes with main's version, and the resulting CLI stays 0.1.147. Full scope is ten files, +443/-36 against merge base bf0bd59. Diff check is clean and the rubric/checklist are unchanged.

Independent exact-head validation: 110 tests pass across daemon, daemon-service, daemon-supervisor and my periodic-error boundary suite in 0.437s, Node 22 with --experimental-vm-modules --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, no forced exit. All ten changed archive files match the fetched head byte-for-byte.

Prior reviews 5637375131 and 5636939791 carry their strict HTTP proof, private credential/marker lifecycle, restart limits, ownership and periodic-failure mutation evidence unchanged. No security blocker found. This review does not certify installed launchd/systemd behavior, real child termination, live credentials, publication or deployment. CI and release press remain separate.

#2562 CODE PASS at b693ad9

Fetched +pull/2562/head and checked out this exact SHA in a detached worktree. Compared every PR-touched file with my previous PASS at 0735a0c. All daemon production files, daemon/service tests, documentation, and package-lock content are byte-identical. The only resulting-tree differences among those paths are an inherited main daemon-supervisor adapter-argv assertion and an inherited package.json temp-cleanup script. The PR's diff against its new base changes package.json only for the reserved version. Package and both lockfile entries agree at 0.1.147.

The prior review's strict proof before replacing/removing a daemon credential, terminal marker and exit behavior, reconnect jitter, and shared start limit therefore carry unchanged. Independent commands at this checkout, from cli: PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin:$PATH npm test -- --runInBand --detectOpenHandles __tests__/daemon.test.mjs __tests__/daemon-service.test.mjs __tests__/daemon-supervisor.test.mjs (3 suites, 107/107 passed without forceExit); PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin:$PATH npm run lint (passed). git diff --check 259499ee1a6889072be78326c3b3ea4424c8522b HEAD passed and the checkout is clean.

This is the code restamp. Security review, current CI/version guard, release, and installation of the revised launchd/systemd policy remain separate. No live credential or installed daemon behavior was exercised.

#2562 SECURITY PASS at b693ad9

Rebase restamp of my verified security PASS 5637423656 at 0735a0c. All four changed daemon production files, the lockfile, documentation and two of the three committed test files are byte-identical to that cleared head. The remaining supervisor-test additions come exactly from main's Settings-effort-to-Claude-argv assertion; package.json inherits main's test:temp-cleanup script. Both differences were read and compared to their base changes. CLI version remains 0.1.147 in package and lockfile, above main's 0.1.142.

Checked out the exact head in a detached worktree. Range-diff preserves all six implementation/test patches, with only supervisor-test import context changing in two commits; the version commit's old-version context changes. Full PR scope remains ten files, +443/-36, against merge base/current origin/main 259499e. Read the full production/doc diff and rebase delta; REVIEW.md and docs/development/review-checklist.md are unchanged. All ten changed files in the test checkout match the fetched commit byte-for-byte. Diff check is clean and live PR head matches.

Exact-head validation: 110 tests PASS across four suites in 0.474s, Node 22.23.1, --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, normal exit 0 with no force exit. This includes 107 committed daemon/service/supervisor tests and my three periodic-error probes. The latter verify scheduled tick and heartbeat exceptions stop work, cancel timers, retain retryable registration, and cannot replace a terminal revocation verdict when a late rejection arrives. Changed-source lint passes without warnings.

Commands run from the detached checkout root (node is /opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin/node):

node --experimental-vm-modules cli/node_modules/jest/bin/jest.js \
--config cli/package.json --runInBand --detectOpenHandles --runTestsByPath \
  cli/__tests__/daemon.test.mjs cli/__tests__/daemon-service.test.mjs \
  cli/__tests__/daemon-supervisor.test.mjs cli/__tests__/rhea-periodic.test.mjs
node cli/node_modules/eslint/bin/eslint.js \
  cli/src/commands/daemon.js cli/src/lib/daemon-service.js \
  cli/src/lib/daemon-store.js cli/src/lib/daemon-supervisor.js
git diff --check origin/main...HEAD
git range-diff bf0bd593..0735a0c1 259499ee..b693ad98

Prior strict HTTP proof, private credential/marker lifecycle and periodic-failure mutation evidence from reviews 5637423656, 5637375131 and 5636939791 carries for unchanged production code; the prior mutations were not rerun. No security blocker found. This does not certify installed launchd/systemd behavior, real child termination, live credentials, publication or deployment. CI and release press remain separate; existing installations need daemon install again to load the revised service policy.

LANE GATE: PASS @ b693ad9

This re-stamps my cli lane review from 0735a0c after the rebase. Since that review the head has two new commits: 0c730ff4 adds a test only (cli/__tests__/daemon.test.mjs, +19, the bad-config daemon exit and launchd park probe), and b693ad98 changes only the version in cli/package.json and the lockfile, keeping 0.1.147, which no other open PR uses. Production code under cli/src is unchanged since my last pass.

I checked out the head in its own worktree and ran:

git worktree add --detach <wt> b693ad98
cd cli && node --experimental-vm-modules node_modules/.bin/jest __tests__/daemon.test.mjs
-> 32 passed

Sable's CODE PASS and Rhea's SECURITY PASS are both filed at this head.

Check the start limit before the window expires.

The test moves the clock from 0 to 5,000 ms and then fires all queued timers. It never checks the child count before the window ends. A change that shortens AGENT_START_WINDOW_MS or prunes recent starts too early can start a fourth agent before 5,000 ms, and the test still passes. Timer delays do not need their own assertion. When a timer fires, startChild checks now() again, so an early timer cannot start an agent by itself.
