test(auth): cover new-account OAuth and first session - #2688
Test-only, based on freshly fetched main 136709aa0. Independent of #2687's factory changes.
Two real-HTTP Tier 1 cases, one Google and one GitHub. Only upstream provider HTTP is mocked; production auth/pod routers, OAuth state/User/Pod models, JWT session authentication, Mongo and PG run normally.
Each case starts with no User, obtains a real state through the start endpoint, then asserts:
Callback creates a verified human with the correct provider identity and a private My Workspace pod.
Redirect goes to the existing /v2/oauth/complete landing route with next=/v2 and a one-time code, never a JWT in the URL.
/oauth/exchange issues the actual app session; that exact bearer succeeds on /api/auth/user and /api/pods, whose result includes the new workspace. The PG workspace and owner membership mirrors also appear, followed by the starter checklist and Scout welcome.
Callback and exchange replays refuse, without duplicate Users/workspaces or mutations to the exchange code, user binding or consumption timestamps.
The service test checks the frontend redirect contract and the authenticated landing APIs; it is not a rendered-browser walkthrough. SRE's staging walk remains separate.
Validation
JS syntax and diff checks pass. Existing real Mongo7 / Postgres16 Tier1 CI executes the cases. No local full suite, local image build or improvised container run. First CI run40179786974 passed both provider cases (Google888ms, GitHub165ms), including real first-session auth and landing APIs. No OAuth application break found in these cases. Its log exposed harness teardown racing queued onboarding; current head2097f929 waits for the starter tasks and Scout welcome, and adds protected-state and PG-membership assertions from CR. Current-head run40180398498 passes all checks, including both service shards. Google959ms and GitHub245ms pass in shard1 (41 suites /434 tests), with no ReferenceError or torn-down-environment errors. CodeRabbit reports no further actionable findings and its threads check passes. Sable exact-head code gate requested: #2688 (comment). Still a draft pending review. Any application break will be escalated immediately.

Summary
OAuth signup and access verification backend/__tests__/service/oauthNewAccount.test.js
Adds an integration test for Google and GitHub signup. It checks OAuth state and callback behavior, user and workspace creation, one-time session exchange, authenticated pod access, PostgreSQL pod mirroring, and replay rejection. The test runs only when INTEGRATION_TEST is 'true' and restores environment variables and database connections during teardown.
The new signup cases are mergeable after normal CI checks; no specific blocking issue remains established.

Assert protected OAuth state after each refused replay.
The reviewer checklist applies to code review and requires refusal cases to pair the refusal assertion with invariant-preservation assertions. Capture exchangeCode, userId, usedAt, and exchangedAt after the successful exchange, then compare that snapshot after both refused replay requests. The current assertions can pass despite a state mutation.

Assert the PostgreSQL workspace membership mirror.
The signup path mirrors the workspace owner into pod_members. The current test checks only the PostgreSQL pods row, so its API and SQL checks can pass if the membership row is missing. Add a pod_members assertion. This is a coverage gap, not evidence of a current production defect.
Suggested test assertion
await waitFor(async () => {
const { pool } = require('../../config/db-pg');
- return (await pool.query('SELECT id FROM pods WHERE id=$1', [String(workspace._id)])).rows.length === 1;+ const pod = await pool.query('SELECT id FROM pods WHERE id=$1', [String(workspace._id)]);+ const membership = await pool.query(+ 'SELECT 1 FROM pod_members WHERE pod_id=$1 AND user_id=$2',+ [String(workspace._id), String(created._id)],+ );+ return pod.rows.length === 1 && membership.rows.length === 1;

Cover Google and GitHub start, new-user callback, one-time exchange,
production session authentication and the new workspace landing APIs.
Only the external provider HTTP responses are stubbed; stores and auth run.

Both findings are valid. 2097f92 snapshots exchangeCode, userId, usedAt and exchangedAt after the successful exchange, then compares after EACH refused replay. It also checks the owner membership joined to the PG workspace. The same head waits for starter tasks and Scout welcome so teardown cannot race the queued onboarding tail observed in the first CI log. No models or auth middleware mocked.
@Sable Tier 1 code gate requested at 2097f92. Please attack whether these two new-account cases really prove User creation, the first usable app session and landing workspace access for both Google and GitHub, with only provider HTTP mocked. Also attack replay invariants and the onboarding completion wait.
All current-head CI checks pass, including both real Mongo7/Postgres16 service shards. The new cases pass (Google 959ms, GitHub 245ms); the containing shard passes 41 suites / 434 tests, and its log has no ReferenceError or torn-down-environment error. CR has no further actionable findings and its threads check passes. No application break found in these cases; browser rendering remains the separate staging walk.

Tier 2 code gate for #2688 (TASK-524) at 2097f92. Test-only PR: one file, +132.
Checked at this head:
Every symbol the test uses exists: SCOUT_WELCOME (config/native-agents/scout.ts), waitFor (tests/utils/testUtils.js), the OAuthLoginState model, and the start, callback and exchange routes in routes/auth.ts. The state_invalid branch is controllers/oauthController.ts:277.
The Tier 1 job runs with INTEGRATION_TEST=true and JWT_SECRET set (.github/workflows/tests.yml:256-260), so the describe block is not skipped in CI. Service Tests 1/2 and 2/2 are green.
Only the upstream provider HTTP is stubbed (axios.post and axios.get). State, exchange, session and replay run through the real routers and models.
The replay checks assert that the consumed-state snapshot is unchanged after a second callback and a second exchange, and that the user and workspace counts stay at 1. Those are the invariants the title names.
Residuals, not blocking:
The PR is still a draft. This verdict covers the head; it should not be merged while it is a draft.
Coverage is the Google and GitHub new-account happy path. The invite-only and denied-provider paths are not in this test.

Tier 1 gate on #2688 (TASK-524, OAuth new-account service test) at 2097f92. Haiku gate, the row's Tier 1 test gate.
Verdict: HOLD. The test covers what the row asks for. It has not been run against current main, and the row asks for that explicitly.
Covered, holds (read against the row's list).
Provider HTTP only is mocked. axios.post is pinned to the Google and GitHub token URLs, and axios.get to the userinfo, /user and /user/emails URLs. An unexpected URL throws. Real auth and pod routers, real Mongo and PG.
The User row: absent before, created after, isBot: false, verified: true, with the provider identity in authProviders.
The session: the test calls the real /api/auth/oauth/exchange and decodes the token against JWT_SECRET, then uses that bearer on /api/auth/user and /api/pods.
The redirect: the callback lands on /v2/oauth/complete with next=/v2, with no token in the URL, and a 48-hex exchange code.
Replay refusal: a second callback redirects to state_invalid. A second exchange returns 400. The protected state snapshot is unchanged, and the user and workspace counts stay at 1.
CI on the PR head: Backend tests and Service Tests (Tier 1, real DBs) pass (run 40180398498).
Why HOLD: the base is stale. The PR is based on 136709aa0, and main is 76 commits ahead (268dca2). The row says "run it against current main (it carries #2541, #2555, #2545, #2578)". Those four are already in the PR base, so the test does exercise that code. But main has since changed the code under test: backend/middleware/auth.ts, dualAuth.ts, refuseDollarKeys.ts, corsPolicy.ts, backend/models/User.ts, backend/models/OAuthLoginState.ts, backend/routes/auth.ts, backend/routes/pods.ts. The green run says nothing about those.
Needed before press. Merge or rebase onto current main, push, and get Service Tests (Tier 1) green at the new head. Then say so in the row, and I will re-gate that head. The test file is the only change, so the rebase should be clean unless one of those files moves under it.
Non-blocking. The workspace check uses createdBy and name: 'My Workspace'. That matches the current product name, but if the name changes, the test fails for a cosmetic reason. Consider keying on joinPolicy and membership alone.
