feat(ui): Signal OpenUI message cards (TASK-498) - #2689
Render kind:ui v1 with headless OpenUI 1.0.1 and the TASK-495 Signal catalogue. Agent attribution remains visible. No tool provider, queries, mutations or executable expressions. Invalid or expired cards retain their content fallback; expired cards retain the trusted trace link.
This is stacked on #2675. Retarget to main after it merges. The read-only trace endpoint/route depends on #2686. No merge or deploy requested while either dependency is outstanding.
Catalogue and trust boundaries
Generated byte-identical grammar and revision manifest, sync command and drift/hash tests preserve canonical property order. Rendering requires the exact catalogId/catalogRev/catalogHash; unsupported tuples show text plus an unsupported-version note.
Parse/schema checks run before OpenUI mounts, including a bounded reference graph before materialization, a bounded result tree, size/nesting limits, helper placement and presentation limits.
Exact HTTPS host allowlist: commonly.me, docs.commonly.me, github.com. Credentials, custom ports and lookalike hosts are refused. Other labels remain visible without a link.
TaskStatus reads the current pod board and refreshes on task events/reconnect. RunTrace reads server-stamped runId metadata only; no args/results are rendered.
Legacy gig payloads retain their wire format, element/list budgets and GitHub-only link rule while sharing catalogue views.
OpenUI inspector auto-mount is disabled before its lazy import. Observability is disabled. Frontend Docker/CI install telemetry is disabled.
Styles live in uiCard.css, with 390 table records and 44px footer controls.
Proof
Focused tests cover the real React 18.3.1 runtime, parser/capability refusals, unsafe links, fallback/expiry, task/trace authority, legacy gig compatibility, catalogue drift, CSS and message-row dispatch. Frontend typecheck and targeted ESLint pass. Required CI remains the gate.
At ff7eb73, 37 focused card tests + 1 actual MessageRow dispatch + 2 manifest drift/hash checks + 1 MCP tuple-discovery check pass. A rejected lazy chunk keeps its content and sibling messages. CodeRabbit triage: #2689 (comment) .
Actual components were measured in an isolated local Chrome fixture against mocked APIs (no production calls). The repeatable production-build check (node scripts/check-ui-card-production.mjs) records zero jsDelivr/PostHog requests, no horizontal overflow, no page errors and no inspector mount at 390 and 1440. Footer primary link is 44px at 390, 32px at 1440. The preview and measurement notes live under frontend/design-system/preview and docs/audits/task-498.
The frontend adds an OpenUI card catalogue, source validation, shared card views, and rendering for UI-kind messages. It also adds catalogue synchronization checks, responsive styling, preview content, production checks, and test coverage.
Changes: OpenUI card rendering
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Catalogue and source validation frontend/src/v2/cards/uiCardCatalogue.json, frontend/src/v2/cards/uiCardCatalogueRevision.json, frontend/src/v2/cards/uiCardSource.ts, frontend/src/v2/cards/cardLinks.ts, frontend/src/v2/cards/__tests__/uiCardSource.test.ts, frontend/package.json
Defines the card catalogue and revision metadata. Adds source parsing with schema, URL, and content checks, plus the parser dependencies and validation tests.
Card views and data loading frontend/src/v2/cards/cardViews.tsx, frontend/src/v2/cards/uiCard.css, frontend/src/v2/cards/__tests__/cardViews.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2GigCard.tsx
Adds shared card views, task and trace data loading, responsive styles, and shared-view use in V2GigCard.
Adds runtime rendering and UI-kind message integration. Invalid, unsupported, expired, or failed cards retain fallback content. Tests cover rendering, fallback behavior, trace links, and layout invariants.
Catalogue synchronization and checks frontend/scripts/*ui-card-catalogue.mjs, frontend/package.json, .github/workflows/*, frontend/Dockerfile, commonly-mcp/__tests__/tools.test.mjs
Adds catalogue synchronization and consistency tests. Runs the new test in the workflow, disables OpenUI telemetry in frontend installs and builds, and checks the catalogue revision in the post-message description.
Preview and production verification frontend/design-system/preview/*, scripts/check-ui-card-production.mjs, docs/audits/task-498/*
Adds preview examples and a production browser check. The check records screenshots and measurements at desktop and mobile widths; documentation and proof data record the check and its observations.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2675: Adds the backend card validation contract and canonical catalogue consumed by this frontend renderer.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2686: Adds the run-trace endpoint and message runId and runPodId fields used by card trace views.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2383: Adds the existing V2GigCard renderer and message dispatch path that this change updates to use shared card views.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 46b72
The remaining issues are bounded: backend CI installs may send telemetry, and two tests miss regressions in catalogue guidance and task refresh. Address them before merge or accept them with owner awareness.

Keep rounded seconds below 60.
If a completed run lasts 59.5 seconds, Math.round((elapsed % 60000) / 1000) displays 0m 60s. Round the total duration first, then derive both minutes and seconds from that value.

Preserve the message anchor for UI cards.
When a quote targets a kind: 'ui' message, this early return omits the message-${message.id} element that landOnMessage searches for. The quote cannot focus or scroll to the card. Put that ID and a focus target on the rendered UI-card row.

The byte-equality test does not run this script. It would still pass if --check stopped rejecting drift or write mode stopped updating the frontend copy. Add a test that runs --check against mismatched catalogues and a test that confirms write mode restores byte equality.
As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it. Name the specific test that should exist.” As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test.”

Bound reference expansion before parser.parse.
@openuidev/lang-core@1.0.1 re-materializes each reference. Its cycle guard removes the name after each traversal, so repeated references are expanded again. A Card permits six children and can reference another Card, allowing exponential parser work within the current 256-statement limit.
A post-parse expanded(r.root) check cannot prevent this cost. Count the recursively expanded statement-reference graph with an early cap before calling parser.parse. Keep a bounded traversal for the returned tree as defense in depth.

4370326316: fixed. A live socket mock emits task_updated; the second board read changes the rendered task and unsubscription is asserted.
4370326321: fixed. Parser guard refusals each have nearby accepted controls; the canonical parse checks typeName.
4370326324: fixed. Memoized reference-graph expansion is capped before parser.parse, with cycle/depth refusal and a separate bound on the materialized tree before schema validation. An exponential graph and small valid control are covered. The parent writer's equivalent risk was sent to its owner before press.
4370326330: fixed. The message row now catches a rejected lazy card chunk locally. A rejection test preserves the content and sibling message; actual MessageRow dispatch also passes.
Verification: 37 focused card tests, 1 real MessageRow dispatch and 2 catalogue copy/hash checks pass; frontend typecheck and changed-file lint pass. The production-build browser check at 1440/390 records no jsDelivr/PostHog requests, devtools mount, page errors or overflow. Desktop/mobile buttons measure 32/44px. Proof and repeatable command are in docs/audits/task-498/README.md.
The exact catalogue ID/revision/hash is required; unknown tuples retain text with an unsupported-version note. The revision manifest is generated beside the grammar. Docker and frontend CI install with OPENUI_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1.
Inline reply POSTs were refused by the seat gateway, so the answers are recorded here. Keep draft: parent #2675 and trace dependency #2686 remain, and current-head CI/CR and gates are pending. The base-guard failure is expected while stacked; retarget after the parent merges.
Latest head ff7eb73 adds only the MCP catalogue tuple discoverability fix requested on #2675; its focused metadata/manifest agreement test passes. The renderer behaviour and production-build proof remain from f03e793. The docs now identify the reader as TASK-498 / #2689 until this PR merges. Current CI/CR and gates remain pending; keep draft.

The four inline findings are fixed as described in comment 6396982601.
Quote navigation: the rendered UI card, loading fallback and chunk-error fallback retain message-${id} and a focus target. The real MessageRow dispatch regression locates and focuses that anchor.
Duration rounding: round total seconds before splitting minutes/remainder. The 59.5-second case displays 1m 0s.
Sync script: an isolated temporary-tree test proves --check rejects drift, write mode restores both generated files, and the restored check succeeds.
Latest delta: targeted anchor/duration tests 2/2; grammar/manifest/sync tests 3/3; frontend typecheck and changed-file lint pass. Prior production-build 1440/390 proof is unchanged. Writer guard 9467bbf is integrated; source-pod trace metadata follows #2686. Keep draft until dependencies, current CI, review and gates clear.

Key the revision-file assertions by field name.
The loop checks each revision value as an unqualified substring. String(revision.catalogRev) is "1", and the description already contains "1" in v:1 and openui@1. As a result, a wrong catalogRev:1 in the description still passes this test.
The loop also misses a change to uiCardCatalogueRevision.json. The current catalogHash contains the digit 2, so setting catalogRev to 2 still passes. Every single-digit value from 0 to 9 already appears in the description, so the loop cannot fail for those values. The keyed check at lines 85–88 uses the hard-coded payload catalogRev: 1, so it does not read the revision file. Neither test detects the drift. The assertions below check each field with its key.
Proposed assertion
- for (const value of Object.values(revision)) expect(description).toContain(String(value));+ expect(description).toContain(`catalogId:"${revision.catalogId}"`);+ expect(description).toContain(`catalogRev:${revision.catalogRev}`);+ expect(description).toContain(`catalogHash:"${revision.catalogHash}"`);

Footer primary link is 44px at 390, 32px at 1440. The preview and measurement notes live under frontend/design-system/preview and docs/audits/task-498.Artboard text: #2675 (comment)
