fix(runtime): remove direct Anthropic routes and use working bot default - #2704
Remove the dead direct-Anthropic LiteLLM groups and cluster-key consumers. Commonly-bot now requests deepseek-v4-flash directly, matching the backend default, instead of requesting a dead Gemini primary and relying on fallback. Pod-summary and optional social-rewrite failures log the feature/model and heuristic fallback, without provider error bodies or chat content.
TASK-001, amended D76 runtime scope. Tier 2 (credentials/routing): Rhea + Sable gates required after CR first pass.
Behavior and rollout
Remove all direct Claude model groups; remove Anthropic key env from backend, ops-runner, LiteLLM and gateway/init wiring (including dynamically provisioned gateways). Remove local chart key value/secret entry and bootstrap injection. Existing PVC copies are not scrubbed by this PR.
Latest CTO amendment drops the migration/census script entirely: SRE found zero hosted Claude selections; all 47 Claude selections are BYO seats. Measurement provenance. No installation model records, owner notices or migration/apply paths are added. OpenRouter routing remains separate work.
Shared client model-listing tests cover success and 401/503 errors. No backend caller or installation-rewrite path exists for this listing. Removed the inert Mongo fixture rather than claim BYO persistence safety. Future availability-driven rewriting must supply a runtime-tier regression; this PR adds no rewriting or migration.
Deploy first. SRE owns Secret Manager + ESO cleanup and verification after deployment. The existing templates/secrets/api-keys.yaml mapping remains pending that post-deploy cleanup. No live secret or DB writes performed here.
Incident attribution remains open
Live bot deployment has no model env override. Its actual source selects gemini-2.5-flash; the live proxy falls back to DeepSeek. The only bot chat call sites are pod-summary and social-rephrase, both using that same model.
Retained LiteLLM logs show Haiku 401 at 2026-10-25T00:44:28.955Z from HTTP caller 127.0.0.1:41108, surrounded by loopback calls. This does not establish a commonly-bot feature call. Original attribution evidence requested from Lily/SRE; an in-container probe is plausible, unconfirmed. No lost Haiku-backed user output is claimed.
Existing pod-summary error handling silently replaces failed synthesis with heuristic recap, persisting before ack for silent requests or posting before ack for normal delivery. Social rewrite similarly uses heuristic feed text. Thus synthesis can degrade silently while recap delivery is retained; warnings now expose that failure.
Validation
Full CI agent-service Node command: 23/23 passed. Malformed/blank/copied rewrite rejection logs tested; removing the missing-summary warning kills its regression, restored bot suite 10/10. Actual client HTTP model tested in fresh processes for deployed and standalone config; confirms backend-default equality and routed non-Claude group.
Node regressions cover summary warning + persisted heuristic before ack, social warning + delivered heuristic before ack, absent direct routes/key consumers.
Backend Node22 client model-listing + ops-runner mirror: 5/5. Positive controls prove route/key removal regexes match the former syntax.
Dead-Haiku-default and silent-summary-failure mutants killed; originals restored. A model-only census mutant was also killed before the census was removed under the latest amendment.
Helm lint and diff check pass; scoped production ESLint 0 errors, 2 existing gateway warnings.
No paid model call, live config write, migration, merge or deployment. Shell pickers and future OpenRouter routing belong to their separate owners.
Rebased onto main 2c4fea901 at 6f926db487e334c79d9999ade207f1747c00ca90. The chart conflict keeps the retired second OpenRouter key absent while removing Anthropic. Current-head Node 23/23, backend 5/5, Helm lint, scoped lint (0 errors, 2 warnings) and diff checks pass. Fresh CI, CR and both seat gates are pending; earlier gates do not bind this head.

Walkthrough
The bot now defaults to deepseek-v4-flash for the documented model paths and logs heuristic fallbacks for summary and social-rewrite failures. The Helm and gateway configuration removes direct Anthropic routes and cluster-key consumers. Tests and documentation cover these changes.

The social-rewrite default and deployed bot model use deepseek-v4-flash. Summary and social-rewrite failure paths log the feature, selected model, and heuristic fallback or rejection reason. Tests check model selection and fallback behavior.
The LiteLLM Claude routes and Anthropic key wiring are removed from the listed deployments and local secret configuration. Tests check route/key references and LiteLLM model-list responses. Documentation records the remaining BYO Claude arrangement and deployment sequence.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2707: This PR restores Claude model choices through Anthropic routes and key use that this PR removes.

Log rejected social rewrites before using heuristic text.
If the model returns JSON without summary, rephraseSocialPost returns null at Line 235 without reaching this warning. handleEvent then posts heuristic feed text, but the fallback remains invisible. Log that rejection and test a reply without summary. As per path instructions, “For failure paths, assess both the direction of degradation and who hears about it.”

#2704 (review) — fixed the grouped social-rewrite finding in 0057f7a. Missing/blank summaries and excessive source overlap now log feature/model plus a content-free rejection reason before heuristic delivery. Full agent-service Node command 23/23; removing the missing-summary warning fails the new regression, restored bot suite 10/10.
Census provenance for D76 (relayed by Lily in sprint-board TASK-001 update posted 2026-10-25T10:55:00.196Z): SRE read production Mongo through ops-runner, scanned 826 AgentInstallations and found 47 Claude selections, all BYO/local CLI: 12 claude-code, 11 codex, 2 wrapper/webhook and 22 unset. Native/hosted/internal/moltbot Claude selections: zero. AgentRegistry 0/614, bot Users 0/831, system_settings zero. These are a point-in-time observation, not a runtime invariant. CTO's follow-up posted 10:55:34.931Z drops the migration script entirely. Original task record is in https://commonly.me/v2/pods/6addd4c17f8fc798a6f66431 (TASK-001).
BYO regression scope: it checks the shared client's availability listing against real persisted BYO fixtures; no backend caller/rewrite path for listModels exists today. It does not establish protection for a future migration or catalogue implementation. This PR adds neither.

Anthropic removal: no backend or chart caller still names a claude-* LiteLLM model. Left: presets.ts:1496 (local Claude Code, no LiteLLM path) and detect.ts:22 (capability flag, now correctly false). managedAgentsAdapter stays gated on ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, which is now unset.
commonly-bot default moves to deepseek-v4-flash, which is the existing fallback target. The new warn logs are fine.
No blocking findings.

Remove the inert persisted-selection coverage from this test.
LiteLLMClient.listModels() only calls fetch; it does not access agentinstallations. The Mongo fixture and collection comparison cannot detect changes to persisted selections or route configuration. Remove that fixture, assertion, and persisted-selection wording. Keep the model-list response, error, and fetch checks.

Removed the inert Mongo fixture and persisted-selection claims. Renamed the unit test to litellmClient.models.test.js, retaining model-list response, 401/503 errors, and fetch assertions. There is no backend installation rewrite caller today, so this cannot prove safety of future rewriting; documentation now says that explicitly. No migration or installation writes exist in this PR.
Added positive controls for each route/key/fallback removal pattern using representative former syntax, before applying the absence assertions to the actual chart.
Node agent-service tests 23/23; Node22 backend model-listing + ops-runner mirror 5/5; diff clean. This follow-up changes only tests/docs; production files are byte-identical to 0258333 (Rhea review 5642875594). Re-stamps requested at the new head; no merge clearance claimed.

jest __tests__/unit/services/litellmClient.models.test.js: 3/3 pass (200 returns models; 401 and 503 reject).
Non-blocking note: this head deletes litellmAvailability.byo.test.js, the test that checked BYO installation rows survive a model listing. Nothing guards that behavior now. The docs say so, and there is no rewrite path on main today. A future availability-driven rewrite needs its own regression test. Do not cite this PR as proof of BYO persistence.

#2704 at 6f926db: review of the full PR diff at this head, after the rebase onto 2c4fea9. I did not run the suite.
The direct Anthropic routes, the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY env and the local secret are removed. The commonly-bot default moves to deepseek-v4-flash, matching the backend. There are no installation writes or migrations. The LiteLLM config has no remaining claude-* route or anthropic/ model entry at this head.
Non-blocking, for the press: the admin picker in GlobalIntegrations.tsx still offers anthropic/claude-* values that no longer route. That comes from Sable's read (pod 86637); I did not verify it here.
CI: 13 checks pass and 8 are pending at my read. This verdict assumes the pending checks go green.

Sable code gate at 6f926db, final clearance. I read the backend, chart and commonly-bot diffs at this head. CI is green with no pending checks; CodeRabbit and the thread gate are included in that. The admin-picker residual (GlobalIntegrations.tsx still offers anthropic/claude-* values that no longer route) is not a blocker and goes to the press as noted.
