TASK-508

  • Both DM membership refusal messages name commonly_open_dm and MCP's commonly_dm_agent.
  • Extract the display-label resolver into a pure helper. AgentIdentityService re-exports its public function and DMService uses the same helper, including the runtime-label guard and curated default names. No service import cycle.
  • Replace six inline human/agent auth dispatchers with one middleware. GitHub issue routes and task routes now accept x-commonly-agent-token, matching the other callers. Authorization takes precedence; refusal never falls through to the other verifier. Human-only routes keep human auth. The grant/task limiters use the credential selected for the route's verifier.
  • Remove label-based stale agent-admin pod repair. Reuse requires both the requested agent User ID and the owner User ID to be present already. An existing owner-only legacy room stays untouched, including its history; opening the agent DM creates a new room for the pair. No history is copied into the new room. This closes ambiguous-label adoption into another agent's private room. Exact legacy labels remain lookup candidates only within the requested member pair.

Known rate-limit limitation

The pre-auth grant limiter hashes the presented, unverified credential. Rotating arbitrary Bearer strings therefore creates fresh 60/min buckets on grant reads (GET /:grantId and GET /:grantId/calls), instead of sharing an IP budget. This predates the PR and remains open. Invalid credentials still fail authentication; the limitation is unauthenticated request-budget evasion, not authorization to read a grant. This PR aligns bucket selection with verifier selection but adds no aggregate IP budget.

Verification and heads

  • Initial aa09a178e: 89 focused checks (dual auth10, DM naming4, identity12, message14, pod-create26, GitHub11, task6, thread-state6). The three original mutations (alternate header, runtime-label guard, MCP error tool name) failed their intended assertions and restored controls passed. These are historical results, not a claim that all 89 were re-run at the final head.
  • e922785e5: expanded 131-check auth/name/limiter proof, including real Mongo DM creation and 60→61 grant-budget checks. Rotating an unrelated header beside the selected credential no longer resets its bucket.
  • Final 02358afc936140887ea65d517862ecde30daf3db: real-Mongo DM suite13/13, display-label suite6/6, supported backend typecheck and scoped TS lint pass. The two owner-only exact-label collision tests failed before the recovery removal. The raw legacy-label mutation also failed and its restored control passed. CI/CodeQL/CodeRabbit/thread checks are green at this head.

Rhea security review5643728289 and Sable code review5643906566 both pass at 02358af; those reviews now need renewal after the main merge. Sable independently ran nine focused suites:133/133 on Node22 and Node26. The explicit different-agent-member collision test and the known unauthenticated limiter-budget evasion remain non-blocking follow-ups. The PR awaits current-head CI and renewed Tier 2 gates. No deployment.

Main merge at 6bb5b57

Merged main 2b0ea66895622b63b62591d0d1f887eda9e5839e into the reviewed branch. Two conflicts: agentsRuntime.ts keeps both shared dualAuth and main's OpenUI validation import; agentMessageService.threadWrites.test.js keeps the DM refusal test and both main provenance tests. No source behavior was discarded. Against the new main the PR still changes20 files, with the same added/removed code lines as before except a blank line. git range-diff maps all five author commits unchanged.

Reinstalled backend dependencies from the merged lockfile with npm ci. Node22 checks at this merged tree: nine focused auth/DM/grant/GitHub/task/thread suites135/135 plus real HTTP posting/config/card validation27/27 (162 total). Supported backend tsc:check passes; scoped TS lint has0 errors and28 existing warnings. No full local suite. Renewed Rhea review5644099301 and Sable review5644110736 both have stored commit_id6bb5b57195d4d48e93fb0b5ab028e9f3d9d7bc7e and final GATE: PASS. Current CI/CodeQL/CodeRabbit/threads are green; merge state CLEAN. Await Lily press.

Walkthrough

The change adds shared authentication dispatch across routes, binds grant and task rate limits to resolved credentials, extracts agent display-label resolution into a utility, changes agent DM pod searches, and updates agent DM refusal guidance.

Changes: Shared authentication dispatch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve credentials and select a verifier
backend/middleware/dualAuth.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/middleware/dualAuth.test.js
The middleware selects agent authentication when the bearer token or x-commonly-agent-token value begins with cm_agent_. Otherwise, it selects human authentication and uses the bearer token or x-auth-token. It invokes only the selected verifier.
Adopt shared authentication across routes
backend/routes/agentsRuntime.ts, backend/routes/artifacts.ts, backend/routes/github.ts, backend/routes/grants.ts, backend/routes/messages.ts, backend/routes/tasksApi.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/*
The route modules use shared authentication instead of local dispatch logic. Grant and task rate-limit keys use resolved credentials. Tests cover verifier selection, alternate-header authentication, and credential-based limits.

Agent display labels

Layer / File(s) Summary
Share display-label resolution and DM searches
backend/utils/agentDisplayLabel.ts, backend/services/dmService.ts, backend/services/agentIdentityService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/*, backend/__tests__/services/dmService.test.ts
The helper selects a display name, non-default instance ID, username, or fallback. DM pod searches use escaped alternatives based on the agent name and resolved label. Stale owner-only pods are not repaired or reused. Tests cover label inputs, room names, and pod reuse.

DM refusal guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update private-channel guidance
backend/services/agentMessageService.ts, backend/routes/agentsRuntime.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/agentMessageService.threadWrites.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/agentsRuntime.podCreateDedup.test.js
Agent DM refusal text names commonly_open_dm and commonly_dm_agent. Tests check the guidance and refused-membership behavior.

Preserve curated default-instance display names.

The identity producer accepts options.displayName independently from agentName, and the identity tests preserve curated Pixel labels. Bare equality is not always a runtime-label leak.

For instanceId: 'default', preserve displayName: 'Pixel' instead of falling back to username. Keep the bare-runtime guard for non-default instances, where instanceId provides the identity fallback, and keep the composite runtime-label guard.

Suggested fix
   const leakedPattern = (
     !!display
     && !!agentName
     && (
-      display.toLowerCase() === agentName.toLowerCase()
+      (
+        !!instanceId
+        && instanceId !== 'default'
+        && display.toLowerCase() === agentName.toLowerCase()
+      )
       || (
         !!instanceId
         && display.toLowerCase() === `${agentName.toLowerCase()} (${instanceId.toLowerCase()})`

This affects both newly created agent-admin and agent-room DMs. Existing pods are returned before label resolution.

Assert that refusal performs no writes or emissions.

The current service rejects before the write and socket-emission paths. This test does not protect that behavior. Assert that PGMessage.create was not called and emitted remains empty.

Key alternate-header task writes by the authenticated token.

dualAuth accepts x-commonly-agent-token, but taskWriteRateLimitKey does not. Because the task-create and task-claim limiters run before authentication, an agent can keep one valid runtime token and vary x-auth-token to obtain a new bucket for each request.

Make the limiter key follow dualAuth precedence. Preserve x-auth-token for human authentication.

+  const authHeader = req.get('Authorization')

Add a route test that changes x-auth-token while keeping the same x-commonly-agent-token, and assert that the task-write limit is not reset.

Review follow-up

  • discussion_r4370652712: auth and task-limit keying now share the selected credential. A real task route test holds one runtime token constant while rotating x-auth-token; request 21 is still 429, and a different runtime token remains available. Reverting this fix makes that assertion fail.
  • The grant limiter had the same ambiguity. Each grant route binds its actual verifier's credential before the shared limiter. Human-only, agent-only and dual routes all resist unrelated-header rotation, and a read shares the exhausted write budget. One limiter/store is retained; a runtime-looking alternate header cannot rotate a human-only route's budget.
  • Review comment on curated default labels: bare-name leak detection applies only to non-default instances; default curated names such as Pixel and task-clerk remain intact. Composite runtime labels still refuse. This fixes the CI failure in the real DM service suite.
  • Review nitpicks: DM refusal now asserts zero PG writes and zero socket emissions. Added the agent-admin DM creation path, including both its name and description.
  • discussion_r4370637320: the unserved middleware HTTP test fixture now has an actual limiter before auth, matching production ordering. No production route was missing a limiter in that finding.

Focused verification: 18 auth/credential cases; task boundary 7; grant reads and budget binding 25; DM label unit 6; identity fallback 13; message writes/refusal 14; GitHub 11; real Mongo DM 5. Original pod-create 26 and message thread-state 6 remain unchanged and passed. Supported backend typecheck and scoped lint have zero errors. Original three mutations and the new write-bucket mutation fail intended assertions, with restored controls green.

Current-head CI/CodeQL/CodeRabbit and Lily-routed Tier 2 code/security gates remain required. Raw inline-reply POSTs are unavailable to this seat, so discussion links are quoted here.

Match agent-admin pods by the label used at creation.

When getOrCreateAgentDM receives agentName: "openclaw" and the agent has displayName: "openclaw (aria)" with instanceId: "aria", the new resolveAgentDisplayLabel returns "aria". The method then stores DM: aria and Debug channel for aria, but every lookup still searches for "openclaw". A repeated call can therefore create a second agent-admin pod. The base resolver kept "openclaw (aria)", so the new leak-pattern fallback introduced this duplicate path.

CodeRabbit outside-diff finding at e922785 is fixed in f0b6410.

getOrCreateAgentDM now resolves the same label before lookup and creation. Both the requested agent name and resolved label are escaped before use in the existing-pod and stale-pod lookups. Membership and stale-pod compatibility checks remain required.

Real-Mongo regression checks call the method twice using a runtime-leaking display name and a curated label containing regex characters. Both failed before the fix (2 failed / 5 passed) and now reuse exactly one pod with the same two members (7/7). Display-label unit controls pass 6/6. Supported backend tsc:check passes; scoped lint has zero errors and existing warnings.

New-head CI/CodeRabbit and routed Tier 2 gates remain open.

Match resolved labels that end in punctuation.

For Nova [reviewer], the trailing \b cannot match after ] at the end of Debug channel for Nova [reviewer]. If the pod name was edited, the name fallback also misses the pod and this method creates a duplicate. Use boundaries that admit a complete escaped label ending in a non-word character. Add a description-only reuse case to the Mongo test. MongoDB documents \b as a word-boundary match. (mongodb.com)

Both current DM lookup findings are fixed in 6686359.

  • Inline 4370750939: name and description lookups now match the complete factory-produced identity, including the DM/debug prefix and escaped full label. The same patterns apply to both member-complete lookups and stale-pod repair. Owner-only Supernova and nova notes pods remain untouched; the requested agent gets its own DM.
  • Other comment at dmService:146: the full description pattern accepts punctuation-ending labels such as Nova [reviewer] without relying on a trailing word boundary. A renamed pod is reused by that description.
  • Compatibility control: the stored pre-cleanup display label is also an exact, escaped candidate, so a legacy openclaw (nova) room with a renamed title is repaired rather than duplicated.

The three new failure cases reproduce against f0b6410 (3 failed, 8 passed); the fixed real-Mongo suite passes 11/11. Display-label unit controls pass 6/6. Supported backend tsc:check passes, scoped lint has zero errors (existing warnings). New-head CI/CodeRabbit and Tier 2 code/security gates remain required.

Earlier task limiter finding 4370652712 remains addressed in e922785: the key uses the same resolved credential as the verifier; its rotating x-auth-token regression and control are retained.

Make the legacy-label test detect the changed lookup.

The test passes agentName: 'openclaw', and the stored description contains the word openclaw. The pre-change word-bounded lookup finds this owner-only pod, and the compatibility check accepts an owner-only pod before ensureDmMembers repairs its membership. Use a stored label that does not contain openclaw, then assert the intended reuse and membership result.

Do not repair an owner-only pod based only on a display-label match.

If another agent has an owner-only agent-admin pod named DM: nova, adding nova to searchLabels lets the stale-pod search select that pod. isCompatibleStalePod accepts every owner-only candidate, and ensureDmMembers then adds the requested agent. That agent can gain access to the unrelated private pod. Require an agent-specific identity before repairing membership; create a new pod when the stored identity is ambiguous. Add an exact-label-collision regression test.

As per coding guidelines, “Auth/scope/ownership checks on every endpoint.”

Current CodeRabbit findings are fixed in 02358af.

Inline 4370772754: removed label-based stale-pod membership recovery and its permissive compatibility helper. Reuse now requires both the requested agent User ID and owner User ID already in the pod. An owner-only private pod is ambiguous even when its exact name/description matches a requested, resolved or legacy label; it stays untouched and a separate DM is created. No migration or new identity field was added.

The two exact-label collision regressions (nova and openclaw (nova)) fail against 6686359 (2 failed, 11 passed); fixed real-Mongo suite is 13/13. Existing substring collisions, punctuation-ending renamed rooms and normal pair reuse stay covered.

Nitpick at dmService.test.ts:191: the revised legacy fixture is named Private notes, has description Debug channel for legacy-runtime (nova), and uses requested agentName openclaw. Both IDs are already members. This pins the raw stored-label lookup without matching the requested name. Removing that raw-label candidate makes the intended assertion fail; restored control passes. Ambiguous owner-only legacy pods are covered by the refusal cases above instead of being repaired.

Display-label unit controls6/6, supported backend tsc:check pass, scoped lint0errors (existing warnings). New-head CI/CR and Tier2 code/security gates remain required. Draft remains held.

CodeRabbit thread answers at current head 02358af:

The revised legacy-label control requires both User IDs already present and does not contain the requested agentName in its description. Removing the raw stored-label candidate fails that test; restored control passes. Real-Mongo13/13, unit6/6, supported typecheck and scoped lint pass. Current CI/CodeQL/CodeRabbit are green; independent Tier2 gates remain open.

Tier 2 security gate for #2710 (TASK-508, unify dual auth and agent naming) at 02358af. Head check: OPEN, not draft, base main. 20 files, 385 insertions and 205 deletions. The security surface is the auth dispatcher, the grant and task route auth, and the agent-admin DM lookup. I read the auth hunks, the dualAuth test and the new dmService lookup tests. I did not run the suites and did not read the display-label utility move in full. CI state is the press's check.

Verdict: PASS.

What holds:

  • One verifier per request. backend/middleware/dualAuth.ts picks the agent verifier only when the chosen token (Bearer, else x-commonly-agent-token) starts with cm_agent_. Everything else goes to the human verifier. A human bearer wins over an alternate cm_agent header. A refused agent credential never falls through to the human verifier. I traced the mismatch cases against agentRuntimeAuth.extractToken, which reads Bearer first: Authorization "Bearer " with a cm_agent alternate header gives 401, not a bypass; a bare cm_agent Authorization value gives 401 too.
  • dualAuth.test.js covers each of these cases, including x-auth-token carrying a cm_agent_ value (refused on the human path), a revoked agent token (401 on the agent path) and a spoofed x-auth-token next to a valid agent header. resolveDualAuthCredential is tested directly, so the rate-limit key and the verifier come from the same resolution.
  • Grant routes: the limiter now keys on the same resolved credential, bound before the limiter runs, and no verifier or database work runs before it. Keys are hashed. This does not add a bypass.
  • The old per-route copies of dualAuth in artifacts, github, messages, grants and tasksApi are removed and replaced by the shared one. I checked that the github.ts routes, which were on agentRuntimeAuth alone, now get the human path for non-cm tokens. That is the same as before for the human tokens they already accepted.
  • dmService: the stale-pod repair path is removed. It used to reuse an owner-only agent-admin pod that might belong to another agent with the same name, so removing it closes an ownership-confusion path. Ambiguous pods are left alone and a new room is created.

Non-blocking, for the PR body or a follow-up test:

  1. The agent-admin lookup now also searches the runtime agentName (for legacy pod names). It still requires both the agent and the owner to be members, and the new dmService test "reuses a legacy composite label only when the requested agent is already a member" covers that. Add an explicit case: a legacy label-matching pod whose other bot member is a different agent is not reused.
  2. tasksApi now accepts x-commonly-agent-token, which it previously ignored. It is the same token type and the same verifier, so this is a header-surface change, not a new credential. Say it in the PR body.

Updated the PR body for Sable's code-leg notes: owner-only legacy agent-admin rooms now remain untouched while a new member-pair room is created; the existing raw-credential rotation limit bypass is explicitly documented as open. Verification counts are attached to the heads they ran on, with final-head DM13/13 and label6/6 separated from earlier wider checks. Alternate-header acceptance on task/GitHub routes is disclosed. No source or head change.

Rhea's security leg has passed at this head. Please complete the code leg.

Sable code leg for #2710 (TASK-508) at 02358af. Rhea's security leg is already PASS at this head.

Checked at this head

  • One verifier per request. resolveDualAuthCredential takes the Authorization Bearer first, then x-commonly-agent-token. A cm_agent_ token selects the agent verifier; anything else selects the human verifier. The chosen verifier is the only one that runs, so a refusal does not fall through.
  • Route wiring. GitHub issues, tasks, artifacts, grants and messages use dualAuth. Human-only routes keep auth. Artifacts already behaved this way inline, so its semantics are unchanged.
  • Stale-pod repair removal is now disclosed. isCompatibleStalePod and the stale-candidate path are gone from dmService.ts, and the body states the new-room consequence for owner-only legacy DMs. My earlier finding on this point is resolved.
  • Grant limiter known limitation is now disclosed. grantRateLimit keys on the presented credential hash, so rotating an unverified Bearer gets a fresh 60/min bucket. The body names this as pre-existing and open. It is not a regression from this PR, so it does not block.
  • Label extraction. agentDisplayLabel.ts keeps the runtime-label guard, and the DM lookup keeps members $all [agent, owner].

Verification (detached worktree at 02358af; backend node_modules linked from a checkout with an identical lockfile)

  • Nine focused suites: dualAuth, dmService (service and display-label), grants read, GitHub upstream error routes, tasks query coercion, identity display-label resolver, thread writes, pod-create dedup. 133/133 pass on Node 22 (the CI pin) and 133/133 on Node 26.
  • I did not re-run the body's mutation checks.

Follow-ups (non-blocking)

  • Key unverified credentials in grantRateLimit by IP, or file the bypass as a tracked item. The body's known-limitation note is the minimum.
  • Rhea's suggested explicit different-agent-member collision test (already noted in her security PASS).

#2710 TASK-508 security re-stamp at 6bb5b57 (merge of main into 02358af)

Gated head: 02358af (PASS, review 5643728289).

The new head is a merge commit with parents 02358af (the gated head) and 2b0ea66 (main). The PR's own commits are unchanged.

Delta check, restricted to the PR's 21 changed files:

  • git diff 6bb5b5719^1 6bb5b5719 -- <PR files> is empty. The merge changes none of the PR-owned files relative to the gated head.
  • Main's change to those same files since the merge-base is also empty.

So the security surface reviewed at 02358af is byte-identical at 6bb5b57. The merge brings in main's other changes (outside the PR's files), which are not part of this gate. Anything in those files that touches auth is a separate gate.

The verdict from 02358af carries to this head. Both non-blocking notes still stand: the legacy-label DM lookup needs a different-agent test, and x-commonly-agent-token is accepted on tasksApi with the same verifier.

Not re-run locally. CI is the press's check at this head.

Sable code-leg renewal for #2710 (TASK-508) at 6bb5b57, a merge of main (2b0ea66) into the PR head. My earlier PASS was at 02358af.

What changed since my PASS: only the merge. Against main, the PR's own changes are the same 20 files and line counts as at 02358af. In routes/tasksApi.ts the merge keeps the dual-auth import and resolveDualAuthCredential rate-limit key, and drops the old local auth wrapper. The one merged test file keeps the refusal test from the PR. Main's additions in the merge do not touch the PR's auth, dedup or display-label logic.

Checks: all 25 checks at 6bb5b57 are SUCCESS or SKIPPED, the merge state is CLEAN, and CodeQL is SUCCESS. I did not re-run the focused suites locally at this head. The renewal relies on the unchanged PR-side code plus green backend, service and frontend CI.
