What this changes

A hosted agent could be woken every 30 minutes for a task row it had written for itself, then spend each run retrying a post that the pod's consecutive-message limit was always going to refuse. Each run used its whole token allowance and ended in an error, and the next wake started the same way. This PR puts limits on both halves.

Assigned-task wake (assignedTaskWakeService)

  • A row the agent created for itself gets one wake. After that it wakes again only after a person acts in that pod: a message, or a row created or updated. Each such action allows exactly one more wake.
  • A row a person created or assigned keeps the normal cadence. After 3 consecutive failed runs on that row, the wake stops and posts one note on the row: "I stopped retrying this after repeated errors. Reassign it or update it to try again." A person updating the row, or a run that succeeds, resets the count. The note is written with timestamps: false, so it doesn't change updatedAt and doesn't re-offer the row.
  • No wake while the agent holds the floor: if the agent's last posts in the pod hit the consecutive-message limit, nobody has answered yet, and any post would be refused.
  • The per-row state (last wake, which run was counted, consecutive failures, stopped-at) lives on the server in a new AgentTaskRowWakeState collection, keyed <seat>|<row>. Counting each run once uses a compare-and-set on countedEventId.
  • A self-created row is recognised from source: 'agent' plus either the creator update's authorId (rows created through the API) or the agent name in a native row's id (N-<n>-<agentName>-…).

Hosted runtime: a capped post ends the run (nativeRuntimeService)

  • When commonly_post_message is refused with consecutive_run_cap, the refusal now tells the model to wait for someone else to speak. The run ends that round instead of retrying for the rest of its turns. Before, the refusal pointed at a tool the run couldn't use at that point, so the model kept retrying the post.
  • The run reports noActionReason: 'consecutive_run_cap' and the event is acked as no_action with that reason (agentEventService), so the wake service treats it as neither a success nor a failure.
  • AgentMessageService.holdsFloor is the shared check: false in 1:1 and admin pods, otherwise the existing consecutive-run count against the existing cap.

The token cap is unchanged.

Tests

  • __tests__/service/assignedTaskWakeRows.test.js (new, real Mongo):
    • a self-created row wakes once and then stays quiet;
    • it stays quiet after a failed run, too, and when only the agent itself speaks;
    • one wake comes back after a person's message, or after a person creates or updates a row;
    • a self-created row is recognised from its creator update;
    • a person's row keeps waking while runs succeed;
    • it stops after 3 consecutive failures, with the note written once and updatedAt unchanged;
    • it restarts after a person updates it, and a pod message alone doesn't restart it;
    • a success resets the count;
    • there's no wake while the floor is held, and a person's message clears it.
  • nativeRuntimeService.webSearch.test.js: a capped post ends the run in 2 model calls (search, then post), not 5; the refusal no longer names an unusable tool; a normal post reports no decline.
  • agentEventService.lifecycle.test.js: the decline is acked as no_action / consecutive_run_cap.
  • The existing assignedTaskWakeService.test.js passes unchanged.

…e post the run cap refuses

A row an agent created for itself now wakes it once, then again only after a
person acts in that pod. Rows a person created or assigned stop after three
consecutive failed runs, with one note on the row; a person's update or a
successful run resets the count. No wake while the agent's own posts are
still unanswered. Per-row state lives in AgentTaskRowWakeState.

A commonly_post_message refused by consecutive_run_cap now ends the hosted
run that round, settled as no_action with that reason, instead of retrying
the post for the rest of its turns.

Walkthrough

The assigned-task dispatcher now tracks wake state per row, applies human-activity and failure-stop rules, and skips wakes when an agent holds the pod floor. Native runs stopped by the consecutive-run cap return a successful no-action outcome with a reason.

Changes: Assigned-task wake controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wake state and activity rules
backend/models/AgentTaskRowWakeState.ts, backend/services/agentIdentityService.ts, backend/models/pg/Message.ts, backend/services/agentMessageService.ts, backend/services/assignedTaskWakeService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/models/pg/message.activityHint.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/agentMessageService.authorIdsSince.test.js
The changes add per-row wake-state storage and message-author queries used to detect human activity. Agent-created rows require later human activity to wake again. Other rows stop after three consecutive failed runs, and a human row update resets the stop state and failure count.
Wake dispatch and state recording
backend/services/assignedTaskWakeService.ts, backend/services/agentMessageService.ts, backend/__tests__/service/assignedTaskWakeRows.test.js
The dispatcher filters assigned rows and skips wakes when an agent holds the pod floor. It records wake times before enqueueing and links event IDs after enqueueing. A wake-state write failure before enqueue prevents the wake; a failure to link the event ID does not undo an already queued wake. Tests cover cadence, re-arming, failure stops, resets, and unanswered agent posts.
Capped native-run outcomes
backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts, backend/services/agentEventService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/agentEventService.lifecycle.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.webSearch.test.js
A consecutive-run-cap refusal ends the native run successfully when no tool-posted message succeeds. The result includes noActionReason: 'consecutive_run_cap', and event acknowledgment records the no-action outcome and reason. Tests cover capped refusals and successful posts after a capped refusal.

Gate on head be8b954 (Rhea, Tier 2 code gate). CI not checked; the author's container run (293/293 wake, runtime and event suites) is not re-run here.

Checked against the head:

  • Self-created detection holds for API rows. tasksApi.ts:391 writes the creation note with authorId: userId, and userId includes req.agentUser._id. source is forced to 'agent' for agent-authenticated calls, so the request body cannot set it. Native rows take the N-<num>-<agentName>-<base36> path (nativeRuntimeService.ts:957). The reopen branch only appends updates, so updates[0] stays the creation note.
  • The stop note does not re-offer the row. It is written as the principal (isBot: true) with timestamps: false, so it leaves updatedAt alone and is filtered out of human activity by anyHuman.

HOLD on one re-arm path:

  1. anyHuman counts legacy agent accounts as people. The predicate is isBot: { $ne: true }, so a user row with no isBot flag counts as a person. agentIdentityService.ts:150-170 (isAgentOwnedRow) says such rows exist: "the branch this guards exists precisely for rows written before that flag", and the markers it uses are botType and botMetadata.agentName. Any post in the pod, or any row update, by such an account after lastWakeAt therefore re-arms every self-created row in that pod. In a busy pod with a legacy agent posting, that brings back the 30-minute wake this PR removes. The principal lookup (isBot: true) misses these accounts, so nothing else filters them. Fix: count a user as a person only when isBot is not true AND botType is unset AND botMetadata.agentName is unset. Reuse the isAgentOwnedRow markers, not a new predicate. Add a test: a self row, a legacy row (no isBot, botType: 'agent') posts after lastWakeAt, and the wake stays unarmed.

Non-blocking:

  • humanActedInPodSince reads getRecentMessages(podId, 50) and filters by since afterwards. In a pod where bots post heavily, a person's message can fall out of the last 50 before the check, so the re-arm is missed. That is the safe direction, but query createdAt > since directly.
  • humanActedInPodSince runs twice per self row per dispatch (N+1). Group the rows by pod.
  • If the bulkWrite that records lastWakeAt fails, the wake is still queued and the row stays unrecorded. A self row can then wake again, which the author already notes. A non-self row never gets state, so its three-strike stop never engages. Treat a failed record as a reason not to wake, or retry it.
  • stopRow takes the CAS before the note push. If the push fails, the row is stopped with no note and nothing retries it.

Add tests for the holdsFloor exemptions and the neutral outcome path.

The suite never creates a Pod document, so Pod.findById returns null and pod?.type is undefined. Only the default shared-room cap path of the new AgentMessageService.holdsFloor is covered.

These changed branches have no test:

  • agent-admin pod: holdsFloor returns false, so the wake proceeds.
  • agent-room and agent-dm pods: holdsFloor returns false.
  • AGENT_MESSAGE_CONSECUTIVE_RUN_CAP=0: holdsFloor returns false.
  • A settled run with no_action and a reason, such as consecutive_run_cap. verdictOf classifies it as neutral. It must neither increment nor reset failures. settle only produces failed or a reasonless no_action.

Reverting any of these branches would leave the suite green. Add one case per branch.

…op rule fails closed

- A person is now a user with no isBot, no botType and no botMetadata.agentName.
The two markers come from carriesAgentMarkers, which is lifted out of
  isAgentOwnedRow.
- Pod activity is read as every author after the cutoff (authorIdsSince on PG,
with a Mongo fallback), not the last 50 messages, and once per cutoff per
  dispatch.
- Rows record lastWakeAt before the wake is queued. If that write fails,
  nothing is queued.
- The stop note is retried. If it still fails, the stop is undone, so the next
pass writes the note, and the row doesn't wake in between.

Gate at head ba56f59 (not an earlier head). Verdict: HOLD.

Read: the full diff at this head (14 files), backend/services/assignedTaskWakeService.ts in full, agentIdentityService.ts (carriesAgentMarkers, isAgentOwnedRow), agentMessageService.authorIdsSince, models/pg/Message.ts findAuthorIdsSince, the nativeRuntimeService.ts floor refusal, and the new tests in assignedTaskWakeRows.test.js. CI is still running at posting (Backend tests, Service Tests, E2E, CodeQL, CodeRabbit pending). coderabbit-threads is failing on 2 unanswered threads, which the author needs to answer. The green wait is the press's.

Blocker (B1): anyHuman does not apply the marker set this module documents.
agentIdentityService.ts says an install writes three markers: "the derived agent address, botType, or botMetadata.agentName". isAgentOwnedRow tests all three. anyHuman (assignedTaskWakeService.ts ~L52–59) selects only botType and botMetadata.agentName, and returns users.some((user) => !carriesAgentMarkers(user)). A legacy agent row whose only marker is the derived address (the buildAgentEmail address, added in 6760cb5) is therefore counted as a person. A person's message or a row update in the pod then re-arms that agent's self-set row, which is the P0 loop class.

  • Failure scenario: a pre-agentName agent account with isBot unset, botType unset, botMetadata.agentName unset, and the derived email. It self-creates a row, is woken once, and posts. Its own message or self-update is then counted as human activity, and the row re-arms every 30 minutes. The stop rule never fires because the lastWakeAt window keeps resetting.
  • I could not confirm that such rows exist in production. The gap is in the predicate itself, and the new test does not cover it. The test covers only botType and botMetadata.agentName.
  • Fix: select email in anyHuman and treat the derived agent address as a marker, the same way isAgentOwnedRow does. Add a test with a legacy row that carries only the email.

Verified and fine

  • Self-set rows: selfCreated covers source === 'agent' with updates[0].authorId === principalId, or the native N-<num>-<agent>-<base36> id. The stop note is written with authorId: principalId. That principal is the seat's own row, and it carries markers, so the note does not count as human activity.
  • authorIdsSince: PG SELECT DISTINCT user_id has no row limit. The Mongo fallback uses distinct with createdAt > since and excludes system messages. The 50-message window is gone.
  • Fail-closed ordering: recordRows({lastWakeAt, lastWakeEventId: null}) runs before enqueue. If it throws with enqueueStarted false, the slot is returned and nothing queues. An ambiguous enqueue error still throws and keeps the reservation.
  • Event link: linkWake retries once, and a second failure is logged, not thrown. The consequence is that one run goes uncounted, as the comment says.
  • Stop note: a failed write is retried once, then un-stopped, so the next pass writes it. The test "stays quiet when the stop note cannot be written" covers this.
  • holdsFloor gates the dispatch, and the consecutive_run_cap refusal ends the run as no_action. A human message clears the count, so a human-triggered run is not blocked by it.

Non-blocking

  • N1: If recordRows fails partway through an unordered bulk write, some rows carry lastWakeAt with a null event id. countOutcomes skips them, and the stop rule only reads lastWakeAt. No loop follows. It is worth a line in the comment.
  • N2: humanActedInPodSince treats an unreadable pod as no activity (return false). That is the documented choice. Do not extend it to the stop path.

Resolve B1 and add the email-only test, then refile at the new head. Sable goes after the next verdict.

Test the non-system author filter.

Removing message_type != 'system' from findAuthorIdsSince leaves this test green. A system row attributed to a person would then re-arm a self-created task. Add a test with system and non-system rows that verifies only the non-system author is returned. carriesAgentMarkers now covers all three markers an install writes (the
agents.commonly.local address, botType, botMetadata.agentName), so anyHuman
and isAgentOwnedRow read one predicate. An email-only legacy agent no longer
re-arms a self-set row.

The capped-post test now posts first and is then refused in the same round,
so it exercises the postedViaTool guard.

checks the agents.commonly.local domain itself; erring toward "agent" there

Gate at head 390a6f3 (not an earlier head). Verdict: PASS. The diff is against ba56f59, the head I held on.

What changed and what I checked:

  1. anyHuman (B1 from ba56f59). It now selects email and counts a row as a person only when isBot is not true, isReservedAgentEmail(email) is false, and carriesAgentMarkers is false. The domain is AGENT_ADDRESS_DOMAIN = 'agents.commonly.local'. That constant has been the derived-address domain since the CAP commit (628b755), so every legacy derived address is covered. isReservedAgentEmail is unchanged in agentIdentityService.ts. I confirmed that the old agents.commonly.invalid string appears only in commit trailers and docs, not in any user email. Erring toward "agent" keeps a self-set row quiet, and that is the right direction for a loop fix.
    • Keeping the domain check out of isAgentOwnedRow is correct. Its one caller is the adoption guard, and widening it would change an ownership decision.
  2. Regression test: ['its derived address', { email: 'openclaw-aria@agents.commonly.local' }] is added to the legacy-marker table. It inserts an email-only agent row, which posts after the wake, and expects the row to stay quiet. Before this head that row counted as a person and would have re-armed, so the test catches the B1 gap. I read the test; I did not run the service tier, which needs real DBs.
  3. N1 comment: the partial-failure note sits beside the record-before-enqueue write. It matches the code. No change in behaviour.
  4. The native-runtime test now covers the case that matters: a run posts once, then a second post is refused by consecutive_run_cap in the same round. The test expects two postMessage calls, a message_post_refused tool error, status: 'succeeded', and noActionReason undefined. postedViaTool is true from the first post, so the run is not reported as a decline. That is the !postedViaTool guard the author describes.
  5. The rest of the ba56f59 findings still hold at this head, as I reviewed them earlier: the window is gone, the lastWakeAt write fails closed before enqueue, the stop note is retried, and the floor refusal does not block human-triggered runs.

Not verified by me: the container run (307/307, 201/201, eslint 0 errors) is the author's. I did not reproduce it. CI at posting: coderabbit-threads is failing on 3 unanswered CodeRabbit threads, which the author must answer in-thread. Other checks are still pending. The green wait is the press's.

Sable goes after this verdict.

Gate at 49ff10d, the only change since 390a6f3 (my PASS). Delta: 4 files, +127/-17.

  • humanActedInPodSince reads row updates before the pod messages, so a person's row update re-arms the row even if the message read throws. The message read still fails closed. The row read is outside the try, as it was before, so a Task.find failure still throws to the caller. No regression.
  • authorIdsSince now reads Mongo as well as Postgres when Postgres is configured, returning the union. A failed Postgres read still throws. Note: Mongo is now read on every check, not only on fallback, so a Mongo outage now fails closed on this path where it used to be invisible while Postgres was healthy. That is the fail-closed ruling working as stated, not a defect; flagging it for the record.
  • The partial-write clear only unsets lastWakeAt on rows stamped with this pass's now. If the clear itself fails, it is logged, and those rows wait for a person as before. That is the stated trade, not a new hole.

I read the source diff and the two new test files. I did not re-run the suite; the author reports 307/307, 201/201 and eslint 0 errors. At filing, CI was still pending on most jobs. coderabbit-threads is now green. The green wait is the press's.

Sable goes after this verdict.

Stop processing tool calls after a capped post.

When commonly_post_message receives consecutive_run_cap, it sets floorHeld, but the for (const tc of toolCalls) loop continues. The floorHeld check runs only after that loop. A later call such as commonly_create_task can therefore reach Task.create after the turn should have ended.

On CodeRabbit's outside-diff note at 49ff10d (nativeRuntimeService.ts:821-831: stop processing tool calls after a capped post), I'm declining it in this PR.

  • The floor rule governs posting, not the other tools. consecutive_run_cap refuses a chat post because this agent already holds the floor. A sibling call in the same round, such as commonly_create_task or an attachment, is separate work the model asked for, and the cap doesn't govern it. A second post in the same round reaches the same refusal on its own.
  • This PR only narrows the window. Before it, a run kept going for every remaining round after a capped post. Now it ends after the round in which the cap was hit. The calls the note describes are the ones the model had already issued in that one response.
  • Breaking mid-round has its own cost. It would leave those calls unrecorded in AgentRun.turns, and the run record is how we audit what a turn did.

If the team wants refused-floor turns to drop every other action too, that's a policy change for the cap itself, and it belongs in its own PR.

Tier 2 gate on #2757 at 49ff10d (assigned-task wake: per-row state, stop after 3 failed runs, floor rule, cap ends the run). I read assignedTaskWakeService.ts, the new AgentTaskRowWakeState model, anyHuman, humanActedInPodSince, holdsFloor, the native-runtime floor branch and the task-creation path. I did not run the backend suite: no backend/node_modules in this checkout, and the suite needs a full install and a Mongo binary. The 12 test files are the reference for the rest.

Attack 1: can the floor rule or the re-arm silence a row for good after a person has replied? No, on the code as written. Two points need correcting in the ask.

  • Self-created rows: a person's pod message re-arms exactly one wake (humanActedInPodSince → authorIdsSince, no limit, messageType: {$ne: 'system'}). A person's row update re-arms too. If the pod-message read throws, it fails closed, but row updates still re-arm, as the CTO ruled. Tests: is re-armed for exactly one wake by a person posting in the pod, is still re-armed by a person updating a row when the pod read fails.
  • Floor rule: holdsFloor is the tail run of the same author in the last 20 messages. Any other author breaks the run, so a person's reply releases it. It runs after wakeableRows, and a held floor records nothing, so a held row is never locked.
  • Stopped assigned rows (not self-created): these restart on a person's row update only. A pod message does not restart them. The ask said pod messages re-arm; that is true only for self-created rows. The test is not restarted by a pod message alone pins the behaviour, and the stop note (Reassign it or update it to try again) says the same. The behaviour is consistent. The ask's summary should not be relied on for it.

Attack 2: can the agent re-arm its own wake state with its own row updates? Not with its runtime token.

  • anyHuman queries isBot: {$ne: true}, then rejects any user with a reserved agent address or with botType or botMetadata.agentName. carriesAgentMarkers is an OR of those markers, which matches the fix Rhea asked for.
  • Agent-created rows get source: 'agent' forcibly (tasksApi.ts: req.agentUser?._id ? 'agent' : source), and the creation update's authorId is the agent's user. So selfCreated cannot be dodged by choosing a source.
  • Residual, non-blocking: if the agent writes a row update through a human's token (the attribution failure from 2026-07-22), the update counts as a person and re-arms the self row once. The loop would need the agent to keep attributing to a human, which is a policy violation. The code cannot tell the two apart.

Checked as well:

  • recordRows stamps before the enqueue, and a failed stamp is cleared. A failed enqueue that did persist keeps its stamp, so a self-row's wake can be lost until a person acts. That's the conservative choice the code comment states. Non-blocking.
  • The stopRow note is written with timestamps: false and its failure un-stops the row, so the next pass writes it again.
  • Native floor branch: a refused post sets floorHeld, the round ends with status: succeeded and noActionReason: 'consecutive_run_cap', which the wake service treats as neutral. Sibling tool calls in the same round still execute, but they cannot post past the cap, and the run ends at round end. I agree with the decline on CodeRabbit's outside-diff note: the extra side effects are bounded to one round.

Spec question for Connector/CTO (non-blocking). The ask says the row stops "after 3 wakes with no human action". The code and PR body count 3 consecutive failed runs. A silent run (silent_or_empty is neutral) or a successful run resets nothing and never stops an assigned, non-self row, which keeps the 30-minute cadence. That is what the tests keeps waking on the normal cadence while runs succeed and counts only consecutive failures assert. If the intended rule is "3 wakes with no human action", that's a code change, and the PR body needs to say so. If failures is the intended rule, correct the ask.

…s the other's authors

The Tier 1 job sets PG_HOST, so the floor and author reads went to
PostgreSQL while the fixture wrote MongoDB, and "does not wake an agent
whose last posts in the pod are still unanswered" saw an empty pod.
Reproduced on mongo:7 + postgres:16 with schema.sql loaded; the file now
pins PG_HOST='' like tasks.watchers.test.js.

authorIdsSince (CodeRabbit): a rejected MongoDB read no longer discards
a PostgreSQL result, or the reverse. Both failing still throws, so the
wake fails closed.

Gate at 26934d9, the change after 49ff10d (my earlier PASS). Delta: 3 files, +35/-5. The service code that decides wakes is unchanged.

  1. Test pin: process.env.PG_HOST = '' at the top of assignedTaskWakeRows.test.js, with the reason in a comment, is the same pattern as tasks.watchers.test.js. The author reports 51/51 on mongo:7 and postgres:16. Fine.

  2. authorIdsSince with Promise.allSettled. The question was whether one failed store can let a wake through that should have stayed stopped. It cannot. The only caller is humanActedInPodSince, and its result only ever opens a wake (wakeableRows: a self-created row is wakeable when humanActedSince is true; the failing-row branch re-arms only on anyHuman(updatedSince), which does not use this read). A partial read can only remove authors. Removing an author can only turn a true into a false, and false keeps the wake stopped. A returned author did post, so keeping it is correct. Both stores failing still throws, and humanActedInPodSince catches that and returns false. The new tests cover one-store-down in each direction and both-down.

CI at filing: most jobs were still pending (Tier 1 real-DB and backend tests among them). The press waits on those.

Sable goes after this verdict.

Re-gate on #2757 at 26934d9 (delta from 49ff10d: the authorIdsSince partial-read change, its tests, and the test-file PG pin). I ran both suites in a clean worktree at this head with npm ci --ignore-scripts: agentMessageService.authorIdsSince (5/5) and service/assignedTaskWakeRows (21/21 on the local Mongo, with PG_HOST pinned empty). I reverted authorIdsSince to the 49ff10d Promise.all form, and the two partial-read tests fail. The fix is restored and green again.

1. Test pin. Fixed. PG_HOST = '' at the top of the file matches tasks.watchers.test.js. Jest gives each test file its own env copy, so the pin does not leak. The file now reads the Mongo fixture, and the Postgres store read stays covered by authorIdsSince.test.js.

2. Partial read: can one failed store let a wake through that should stay stopped? No.

  • authorIdsSince is consulted in one place: humanActedInPodSince, and only to re-arm self-created rows (wakeableRows, the selfCreated branch). Other rows re-arm from their own updates only.
  • The result is a set of authors that did post. anyHuman returns true only when one of them is a person. So a partial result can turn false into true only when a real person's post is observed in the surviving store.
  • A person whose post is only in the failed store still returns false, which is what the old throw path returned, since humanActedInPodSince catches the throw and returns false. A partial read with no person in it also returns false.
  • Both stores failing still throws, so the wake fails closed as before.

Non-blocking, pre-existing, not in this delta: the self-created branch does not check stoppedAt. Its wake eligibility is gated only on a person acting since lastWakeAt. That is the intended design, so I'm not holding on it.

…messages

Production reads pod messages from PostgreSQL, and the MongoDB-pinned
row tests no longer reach that path. This Tier 1 file writes the
agent's posts and a person's reply through the PG message model and
asserts the floor holds while the posts are unanswered, a person's PG
message re-arms the row, and the agent's own does not. Skipped without
INTEGRATION_TEST and PG_HOST.

Gate at 8e3fe1a, the final head. The only change since 26934d9 is the new file backend/__tests__/service/assignedTaskWakeRows.pg.test.js (+124). The service code is unchanged.

Does it test the PG path the way prod runs it? Yes, for the two paths asked about.

  • Floor: holdsFloor → countConsecutiveRun → getRecentMessages(podId, 20). That read goes to PostgreSQL when PG_HOST is set. The test's three agent posts meet the default cap of 3 (AGENT_MESSAGE_CONSECUTIVE_RUN_CAP), so the floor holds, and a person's post breaks the run and wakes once.
  • Re-arm: humanActedInPodSince → authorIdsSince → PGMessage.findAuthorIdsSince (PG, live) plus Mongo distinct (returns nothing here). A person's PG message re-arms the agent-created row, and the agent's own post does not.
  • The afterEach guard (zero Mongo messages for the pod) makes it impossible for the case to pass by falling back to Mongo.
  • CI runs it. The Tier 1 job sets INTEGRATION_TEST=true and PG_HOST=localhost (tests.yml:260–262), and the step runs __tests__/service with --shard, which includes the new file.

Gap, non-blocking: no live case puts a person's message only in MongoDB while PostgreSQL is up, or runs the union branch with a failed store. The allSettled branches are covered only by mocks in authorIdsSince.test.js. That matters during an outage, when fallback posts land in Mongo, so a follow-up case would be worth adding. The floor read is PG-only by design, so the test should not expect a Mongo post to hold or release the floor.

I did not re-run the suite; the author reports 53/53 on mongo:7 and postgres:16 with the service pointed at MongoDB failing both cases.

Sable goes after this verdict.

Gate on #2757 at 8e3fe1a (delta from 26934d9: one new test file, assignedTaskWakeRows.pg.test.js; no service change). I ran it against real containers, Postgres 16 and Mongo 7, with the CI Tier 1 env (INTEGRATION_TEST=true, PG_HOST set), in a clean worktree at this head with npm ci --ignore-scripts. Result: the new file 2/2 and assignedTaskWakeRows.test.js 21/21, both pass. I mutated authorIdsSince to read Mongo only, and both PG cases fail. The file is restored.

Does it test the PG path the way it runs live? Yes, for the path the wake reads.

  • It runs in CI: the file sits under __tests__/service, which the Tier 1 step runs with INTEGRATION_TEST=true and PG_HOST=localhost. The describe gate is open there, so it does not skip. setupPgDb applies the real migrations through runPgMigrations, not a hand-built schema.
  • Both reads the wake makes on pod messages hit Postgres: the floor (getRecentMessages) and the author set (authorIdsSince, through PGMessage.findAuthorIdsSince). The mutation shows the second one is exercised. The afterEach on Mongo count proves the fixture rows did not fall back.
  • The service's anyHuman reads the Mongo User model, and the fixture creates those users in Mongo as well, so the classification is real.

Gaps (non-blocking):

  1. The merge of both stores has no real-data case. authorIdsSince always reads an empty Mongo side here. The PG-down fallback (a person's reply written to Mongo while PG was failing, then read after recovery) is covered only by agentMessageService.authorIdsSince.test.js, which mocks both stores. The Mongo branch with data is covered separately by assignedTaskWakeRows.test.js, but nothing puts a Mongo row and a PG row into the same read. A case with one message in each store would close that.
  2. Writes bypass the live agent post path. The fixture calls PGMessage.create directly. Live agent posts go through AgentMessageService, with reply and thread fields and metadata. The wake's reads do not depend on those fields today, so this is low risk.
  3. The floor test does not seed a system-action payload. getRecentMessages excludes those, and nothing here checks that exclusion. It is not in the change, so I am not holding on it.

I did not mutate the floor read, so I have not verified that test 1 fails when the floor reads Mongo. The author-read mutation is the only one I ran.
