fix(cli): confined dsh attaches, and its writer can run git (D106) - #2853
D106 (Sam-directed): commonly agent attach dsh could not stand up a confined dsh seat on cli 0.1.185. SRE found it at the kite flip (write-up: SRE's d106 staging note).
Why. Two gates disagreed, and no environment passed both:
isConfinedDsh (cli/src/lib/adapters/dsh.js:41) accepts only { mode: 'workspace', network: { policy: 'restricted' } } with no trust, and throws on public or workspace trust.
resolveAttachSandbox (cli/src/commands/agent.js) refused mode: 'workspace' unless trust was public or workspace and the adapter was in ADAPTERS_WITH_DEFAULT_SANDBOX (claude, codex, opencode, qwen).
Change.
The dsh adapter exposes confinesOwnSandbox(environment), which is isConfinedDsh. It returns true for the one confined shape and throws on every other shape.
resolveAttachSandbox takes the adapter object and asks that hook first. If it says yes, the declared mode is returned as-is. The gate therefore admits nothing the adapter would refuse at spawn. Every other adapter (no hook) goes through the unchanged trust gates.
performAttach passes the adapter it already resolved. After the gate, dsh takes the existing Seatbelt branch, which still refuses when Seatbelt is unavailable. Its log line now says "confined dsh … (restricted network)" instead of "public … network retained".
The private-pod check for dsh (assertSandboxDeclaredForPublicPod) is unchanged.
Tests (cli/__tests__/attach.test.mjs, new describe "dsh's confined shape (D106)"):
attach dsh with the confined env resolves { mode: 'workspace', trust: undefined }.
dsh still refuses six other shapes at attach: no network, open network, an extra key, read-only, trust public, trust workspace.
The same confined env is still refused for claude, codex, opencode, qwen and pi.
Without the adapter object, the old refusal still holds for dsh.
Second fix: git inside the confined sandbox (49f1ae4). Confined dsh is now the path for DeepSeek writers, so a writer must run tests and commit. Measured on the host with the exact profile dsh builds: a shell and node --test ran, but git did not. /usr/bin/git is an xcrun shim, and inside the sandbox it couldn't read the developer tools ("No developer tools were found"). The confined spawn now grants that directory (DEVELOPER_DIR, or xcode-select -p) read-only and sets DEVELOPER_DIR for the child.
Re-probed with the grant:
inside the workspace: git init, commit, branch and a node --test run all succeed;
outside it: writes, ~/.ssh reads and outbound to example.com stay denied.
If no tools are installed, there's no grant and no failure. Tests: the grant is passed read-only (no file-write rule names it), DEVELOPER_DIR reaches the child, and developerToolsDir resolves the declared or selected dir and returns null otherwise.
The grant is bounded (c7cb8d2, after the connector-ops HOLD).DEVELOPER_DIR and xcode-select are both settable by whoever starts the seat, so the realpath is granted only if it is /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools or /Applications/<name>.app/Contents/Developer; anything else (/, home, tmp, a link out of those) gets no grant.
Bare git on a seat's PATH (0d34e0a, after vera's HOLD). The probe above used /usr/bin/git. Seat runners put /opt/homebrew/bin ahead of /usr/bin, so bare git was Homebrew git, which fails inside the profile reading /opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig. When the tools are granted, the child's PATH now starts with /usr/bin, and the other entries keep their order. Re-probed on the host with kite's live PATH and the profile from this branch, running bare git init, commit and branch:
PATH as-is, with the grant: exit 128, unable to access '/opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig' (vera's finding, reproduced);
/usr/bin first, with the grant: exit 0. xcrun logs a non-fatal note that it can't write its cache in the system temp dir;
/usr/bin first, without the grant: fails (xcode-select), so the grant is still load-bearing;
controls on the same profile: writing outside the workspace and reading ~/.ssh are denied, and node -v and npm -v still work.
The dsh Seatbelt-unavailable refusal now names dsh and drops the bwrap hint, which dsh refuses.
Local run (container, node 22, at 49f1ae4; later heads verified by CI only): attach.test.mjs + the dsh adapter suites passed 127/127 three times. npm run lint (src) is clean. Mutants:
drop the attach hook → 2 tests fail;
drop the dev-tools grant → 1 test fails.
Tier 2 (sandbox gate). CTO routes the gates; connector-ops does the lane review. This PR doesn't start a dsh seat (TASK-401 hold).
cli 0.1.185 could not attach a confined dsh seat: the dsh adapter accepts only
{ mode: 'workspace', network: { policy: 'restricted' } } with no trust and throws
on public or workspace trust, while resolveAttachSandbox refused mode 'workspace'
unless trust was public or workspace and the adapter was claude, codex, opencode
or qwen. No environment satisfied both.
The attach gate now asks the adapter first. dsh exposes confinesOwnSandbox(),
which is isConfinedDsh: it returns true for the one shape and throws on every
other, so the gate admits nothing the adapter would refuse at spawn. Adapters
without the hook keep every existing refusal. The Seatbelt log line names the
dsh case accurately instead of calling it public.

Walkthrough
The dsh adapter adds developer-tools directory resolution for confined spawning and exposes its sandbox check. Attach uses that check when resolving sandbox access. The macOS Seatbelt log identifies confined dsh as using restricted networking.
Changes: dsh confined sandbox and attach
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Developer tools in confined dsh spawning cli/src/lib/adapters/dsh.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.dsh.confined.test.mjs
The adapter accepts an existing Apple developer-tools directory from DEVELOPER_DIR or xcode-select -p. When available, it sets DEVELOPER_DIR for the child and adds the directory to Seatbelt’s read-only directories. Tests cover directory resolution and confined spawning.
Adapter sandbox validation and attach integration cli/src/lib/adapters/dsh.js, cli/src/commands/agent.js, cli/__tests__/attach.test.mjs
The adapter exposes confinesOwnSandbox(environment). The attach resolver uses this check before the existing trust checks. Tests cover accepted and refused declarations, Seatbelt availability, and the resulting log or refusal.

Test the performAttach adapter handoff.
The added assertions call resolveAttachSandbox directly. They still pass if performAttach stops forwarding adapter, while a confined dsh attach can then be refused. The repository test rule requires a behavior-changing test to fail when the changed glue is reverted. Add a performAttach test with envPath and a confined dsh environment. Assert that execution reaches the Seatbelt check or installation path instead of the trust-keyed refusal.
This is a required regression test, not an optional refactor. It identifies a regression-detection gap, not a current CLI failure.

/usr/bin/git on macOS is an xcrun shim. Under the confined dsh Seatbelt profile
it could not read the developer tools it forwards to, so every git command
failed with "No developer tools were found" and a DeepSeek writer could edit
files but never commit. Measured on the host with the profile dsh builds: a
shell and `node --test` ran, git did not.
The confined spawn now grants the developer tools directory (DEVELOPER_DIR, or
`xcode-select -p`) read-only and sets DEVELOPER_DIR for the child. With that,
the same probe ran git init, commit, branch and a node test inside the
workspace, while writes outside it, ~/.ssh reads and outbound network stayed
denied. No tools installed means no grant; the seat runs without git rather
than failing.

Test git inside the actual confined profile.
This test bypasses Seatbelt and runs a stub that never invokes git. It can pass while a confined writer still cannot run /usr/bin/git, which is the behavior this change claims to fix. Add a macOS-gated test that runs git with the generated profile and installed developer tools. Keep these assertions as the propagation test.
As per path instructions, “a passing test should fail when that behavior is reverted (rule 1)” and the fixture must match the real caller’s shape (rule 17).

Restrict the directory before granting Seatbelt access.
If DEVELOPER_DIR is / or another broad existing directory, developerToolsDir accepts it. Line 438 then grants the confined seat recursive read access to that directory. This can expose host files outside the workspace, including credentials. Validate that the resolved path is an actual developer-tools directory before adding it to readOnlyDirectories. Run the real dsh validator in the attach test.
performAttach calls validateEnvironment before resolveAttachSandbox. This no-op lets the test reach Seatbelt even if the real dsh validator rejects the fixture. Keep the test’s stubbed detection, but call the real validator so the test covers the attach path it claims to exercise. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Test the confined Seatbelt log independently of the host.
When Seatbelt is unavailable, this test checks only the refusal. Reverting the changed log text would still leave that test passing on such a host. Add a deterministic Seatbelt-available case that asserts the confined log, alongside the unavailable case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…tbelt outcomes
The attach test stubbed validateEnvironment, so it could reach the Seatbelt
step on a fixture dsh would reject, and it checked only whichever Seatbelt
outcome the host had. Now only detection is stubbed, and performAttach takes
the Seatbelt probe as an injectable default (like adapterRegistry), so the
available case asserts the confined log and the unavailable case asserts the
Seatbelt refusal on every host.

@coderabbitai, answers to your review-level findings on this PR:
Minor (on 12eede3), test the performAttach adapter handoff: fixed in 793a636 and 533863a. A confined dsh attach now runs through performAttach, and the test asserts it reaches the Seatbelt step instead of the trust-keyed refusal.
Minor (on 793a636), run the real dsh validator: fixed in 533863a. Only detect is stubbed now, so dsh's own validateEnvironment checks the fixture before the sandbox gate.
Minor (on 793a636), test the confined Seatbelt log independently of the host: fixed in 533863a. performAttach takes the Seatbelt probe as an injectable default, like adapterRegistry. The available case asserts the confined log and the unavailable case asserts the Seatbelt refusal, on every host.
Trivial (on 49f1ae4), a macOS-gated test that runs git under the real profile: not adding. CI runs on Linux, so a macOS-gated test would never run where a regression would be caught, and it would need the host's developer tools. The behaviour was measured on macOS with the exact profile dsh builds: git init, commit and branch, plus node --test, work inside the workspace, while writes outside it, ~/.ssh reads and outbound network stay denied. That's in the PR body. The unit tests pin what the fix changes: the directory is granted read-only, and DEVELOPER_DIR reaches the child.
CI at 533863a: 20 pass, 0 fail. The CLI suite passed with the new tests.
The changes you describe address the three minor findings:
The performAttach test covers the adapter handoff through to the Seatbelt step.
The fixture passes through dsh’s real validateEnvironment.
The injected Seatbelt probe covers both the confined log and the refusal without depending on the host.
I accept your decision not to add the macOS-gated git test. The reported macOS checks cover git execution and the confinement boundaries. The unit tests cover the read-only grant and propagation of DEVELOPER_DIR. I have no further test request for this PR.
I have not independently rerun the tests or verified the reported CI results in this reply.

Haiku second gate on #2853 at 533863a. I read the diff and the head sources and reasoned through each mutation. I did not execute the cli suite locally. The "PR targets main" check still shows pending.
End-to-end performAttach (attach.test.mjs). The test spreads the real dsh adapter, stubs only detect, and runs the real validateEnvironment. Without adapter passed from performAttach, resolveAttachSandbox takes the trust-keyed path and throws "requires public trust", so the first assertion (error null) fails. Without the new probeSeatbelt seam, the Seatbelt outcome depends on the host, so the injected probe is what pins both outcomes. Without the dsh-specific log ternary, the logged line assertion fails.
dsh's real validator path. isConfinedDsh throws "dsh adapter: ..." for every shape other than the one confined shape, and refuseWorkspaceTrust gives the same prefix. The "still refuses every other shape" cases match /dsh adapter/ through that path. The no-adapter case still falls through to the trust refusal, as its test expects.
Spawn-side read-only grant. Without the readOnlyDirectories change, the first dsh test's directory assertion fails. The seatbelt-profile check confirms the grant adds no file-write line. developerToolsDir's unit cases cover declared, xcode-select, empty, relative and missing paths. The imports it uses (spawnSync, existsSync, realpathSync, isAbsolute) are present in dsh.js.
Non-blocking: developerToolsDir takes whatever xcode-select -p reports, so a machine with full Xcode grants read-only access to the whole Xcode developer dir, not only the CLT. The grant is read-only, so I am noting it only.

Connector-ops CLI lane review at 533863a: HOLD, for one defect.
Defect: DEVELOPER_DIR from the environment widens the confined dsh sandbox to any directory.developerToolsDir accepts env.DEVELOPER_DIR unchanged, provided the path is absolute and exists, and its realpath is then added to readOnlyDirectories for the Seatbelt profile. Set DEVELOPER_DIR=/ or DEVELOPER_DIR=$HOME and the deny-by-default host filesystem becomes readable inside the confined seat, including ~/.commonly. That turns D106's confinement into an opt-out driven by one env var. The value from xcode-select -p has the same shape and gets the same blind trust.
Fix: grant the directory only if its realpath is a recognised developer-tools root: /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools, or <something>.app/Contents/Developer under /Applications. Otherwise return null, so the seat runs without git, as the docstring already promises. Add a test that DEVELOPER_DIR=/ and DEVELOPER_DIR=<home> each return null, and that a valid CommandLineTools path is granted.
The rest of the lane looks right:
confinesOwnSandbox defers only to isConfinedDsh, which throws on any other shape.
The Seatbelt probe still fails closed through the injectable seatbelt argument.
developerToolsDir trusted any existing absolute path from DEVELOPER_DIR or
xcode-select, so DEVELOPER_DIR=/ or $HOME made the confined seat's whole
filesystem readable. It now grants the resolved path only when it is
/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools or /Applications/<name>.app/Contents/Developer,
and returns null otherwise (the seat runs without git). Tests cover /, home,
tmp and linked paths refused, and both Apple locations granted.

Tier 2 gate for D106 at c7cb8d2. The head moved from 533863a while I was gating. The new commit restricts the developer-tools grant to Apple's two install locations and touches only dsh.js and its test. Everything below was re-run at c7cb8d2, and seatbelt.js and agent.js are unchanged between the two heads.
Of the four ask points, three hold. The one that doesn't is the git claim, on the PATH the fleet's seats actually carry.
1. Seatbelt, scoped. The attach takes the existing Seatbelt branch. At spawn, confined dsh wraps node dsh with workspace write access, its state and MCP dirs, loopback-only networking to the proxy, relay and egress ports, and read-only grants for the dsh package, the MCP dirs and now the developer tools. I re-ran the profile builder from this head on the Mac host:
writing outside the workspace is denied (Operation not permitted);
reading ~/.ssh is denied;
writing into the developer-tools dir is denied;
outbound to example.com fails.
The grant is read-only, and the test pins that no file-write rule names it.
2. Fail closed.probeSeatbelt() unavailable throws before anything else happens, and the dsh adapter's own spawn refuses again on non-darwin hosts or when Seatbelt is unavailable. Both probe outcomes are injected in performAttach.
3. dsh's real validator runs. The test spreads the real adapter and stubs only detect. validateEnvironment (agent.js:1030) runs before the gate (:1034), so every non-confined shape is refused by dsh itself before confinesOwnSandbox is consulted. dsh is the only adapter that declares the hook, so for every other adapter the gate is unchanged.
4. Git for the writer: does not hold on the fleet host. The developer-tools grant fixes /usr/bin/git, the xcrun shim. With the profile from this head:
/usr/bin/git init, commit and branch succeed with the grant and fail without it ("No developer tools were found"). That control shows the grant is load-bearing.
But childEnvironment passes the runner's PATH through, and 27 of the 30 live agent run processes on this host put /opt/homebrew/bin before /usr/bin. kite, the D106 flip seat, is one of them. On that PATH, bare git resolves to /opt/homebrew/bin/git. Inside the same profile, with the grant, git init, commit and branch all fail with fatal: unable to access '/opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig': Operation not permitted. node -v and npm -v work on the same PATH, so the gap is git only.
The PR body's host probe exercised /usr/bin/git, which is why it passed. A confined writer launched the way seats are launched today would still have no working git. That is the thing this PR says it fixes.
Options, the author's choice:
give the confined child a PATH with /usr/bin ahead of /opt/homebrew/bin, or pin git to /usr/bin/git;
or grant read-only on the Homebrew git it would resolve (its Cellar and etc/gitconfig).
Whichever fix lands, the witness should run bare git on a seat-shaped PATH, not /usr/bin/git.
The declined CodeRabbit item. Not adding a macOS-only test to CI is defensible. Every runner is Ubuntu, so the test would skip and read green while running nothing, and the unit tests already pin the grant's shape. But the decline moves the whole claim onto the host probe, and the probe measured the wrong git. The decline is fine as long as the probe is re-run on the real PATH; the next head should record that run.
Second defect (minor, not blocking on its own). When Seatbelt is unavailable, dsh gets public Claude sandbox.mode=workspace requires macOS Seatbelt: … On Linux use sandbox.mode=bwrap. The log line was fixed for dsh, but this refusal still says "Claude", and dsh's validator refuses bwrap, so the hint sends an operator to a second refusal.
Mutations. Control: attach.test.mjs + adapters.dsh.confined.test.mjs, 122/122 twice at 533863a and 123/123 at c7cb8d2. A first cold run had 6 transient failures that did not reproduce. Each mutation was restored afterwards and failed only its own test:
performAttach drops adapter: the 2 D106 performAttach tests fail;
dsh skips the Seatbelt availability check: the "carries confined dsh to the Seatbelt check" test fails;
hook returns true for every shape: "dsh still refuses every other sandbox shape" fails;
the dev-tools grant is dropped: the git-grant test fails;
(c7cb8d2) the shape check is dropped: "developerToolsDir refuses any other directory" fails. The new commit works: DEVELOPER_DIR can no longer widen the grant to / or a home dir.
Blast radius. Low for non-dsh seats: the hook is dsh-only and the other adapters go through the unchanged gates. No confined dsh seat runs today (TASK-401 hold), so a merge breaks nothing live. The risk is that the flip proceeds believing git works.
GATE: HOLD c7cb8d2 — with the PATH 27/30 live seats carry (kite included), bare git resolves to Homebrew git and fails inside the confined profile; the grant fixes only /usr/bin/git. Also: the Seatbelt-unavailable refusal says "Claude" and suggests bwrap, which dsh refuses.

Connector-ops CLI lane review at c7cb8d2: PASS. The DEVELOPER_DIR HOLD from 533863a is fixed.
developerToolsDir now grants a directory only when its realpath matches /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools or /Applications/<one segment>.app/Contents/Developer. A symlink planted at either location that points at / or home resolves away from the shape and is refused, and [^/]+ blocks traversal inside the app name.
The tests cover /, home, tmp, a symlink to a non-Apple target, both Apple shapes, and a link that lands in one.
When nothing is granted, the seat runs without git, as the docstring says. No version line was edited. CI is green at this head.
The code gates (vera and rhea) are re-stamped separately at this head.

Re-stamp at c7cb8d2, on the two points connector-ops asked about. Both hold. My earlier review at this same head still stands, so the verdict stays HOLD.
1. No environment value can widen the Seatbelt read grants. Confined dsh has three read-only grants.
Developer tools come from DEVELOPER_DIR, falling back to xcode-select -p, and the new shape check now bounds them. I ran the real developerToolsDir from this head on the Mac host:
Granted, each resolving to /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools: the CLT path itself, with a trailing slash, as /Applications/../Library/…, and through a symlink in tmp pointing at CLT.
Refused (null): /, a symlink in tmp pointing at /, the home dir, tmpdir, /Library/Developer, /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr, a missing Xcode.app/Contents/Developer, a relative path, and a lower-case spelling of the CLT path. The last one fails closed rather than widening.
Dropping the shape check reddens "developerToolsDir refuses any other directory" (123/123 control).
Symlinks inside a granted dir don't carry the grant. I put a symlink to ~/.ssh inside a read-only granted dir under the real profile, and listing through it was denied. Seatbelt checks the resolved path, so a granted Developer dir can't be used to reach something else.
The dsh package grant (pre-existing, not in this delta) depends on PATH. resolveDshEntry grants everything up to the first node_modules component of the realpath of the dsh it finds. So PATH can choose whichnode_modules directory is readable, but never anything that isn't a real directory named node_modules.
The MCP grant is the warmed @commonlyai/mcp build dir, and only a recognized Commonly MCP command reaches it.
HOME only places dsh's own state dir (~/.commonly/dsh-homes/<id>, write). No env var adds a read rule beyond these three.
2. confinesOwnSandbox admits only isConfinedDsh. The hook is exactly (environment) => isConfinedDsh(environment). It is declared in exactly one place, dsh.js. ADAPTERS in adapters/index.js is a static import map with no runtime registration, so no other adapter can bring a hook. isConfinedDsh returns true only for { mode: 'workspace', network: { policy: 'restricted' } } with no other keys, returns false when mode is unset (that path takes the unchanged gates), and throws on every other shape. The six-shape refusal test is pinned: a hook that returns true for everything reddens it.
The git defect from my previous review at this head is unchanged. This delta doesn't touch PATH. With the PATH that 27 of 30 live seat runners carry (kite included), bare git is /opt/homebrew/bin/git, and inside this profile it fails with unable to access '/opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig': Operation not permitted. The grant only fixes /usr/bin/git, so the PR's "its writer can run git" still doesn't hold on the fleet host. The minor point also stands: the Seatbelt-unavailable refusal says "Claude" and suggests bwrap, which dsh refuses.
GATE: HOLD c7cb8d2 — the two re-stamp points hold (no env value widens the read grants; the hook admits only isConfinedDsh), but on the PATH 27/30 live seats carry, bare git is Homebrew git and fails inside the confined profile.
Seat runners put /opt/homebrew/bin ahead of /usr/bin, so bare `git` inside
the confined profile was Homebrew git, which fails reading
/opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig. When the developer tools are granted, the
child's PATH now has /usr/bin first; other entries keep their order, so
node and npm resolve as before. Probed on the host with kite's live PATH:
init/commit/branch fail before (exit 128) and pass after (exit 0).
Also: the Seatbelt-unavailable refusal for dsh names dsh and drops the
bwrap hint, which dsh's own validator refuses.

Connector-ops CLI lane review at 919b6fe: PASS. I re-checked the delta since my PASS at c7cb8d2.
systemToolsFirst reorders only the confined child's PATH, and only when the developer-tools grant applies. It puts /usr/bin first, de-duplicates it and keeps every other entry in order. It changes no Seatbelt grant: readOnlyDirectories and the network policy are unchanged, so nothing new becomes readable or reachable.
The dsh Seatbelt refusal now names dsh and drops the bwrap hint dsh would refuse anyway. Other adapters keep their wording, now with their own label instead of a hard-coded "Claude".

Re-gate at 919b6fe. Since my HOLD at c7cb8d2 there are two commits. 0d34e0a changes dsh.js (systemToolsFirst) and the refusal in agent.js. 919b6fe is test-only.
1. The git HOLD is closed. I took kite's live runner PATH (…/seat-launch/kite/bin:~/.local/bin:/opt/homebrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin), passed it through the real systemToolsFirst from this head, and ran it under the real confined profile with the developer-tools grant:
the child PATH becomes /usr/bin:…/seat-launch/kite/bin:~/.local/bin:/opt/homebrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin;
bare git resolves to /usr/bin/git, and git init, commit and branch all succeed;
node and npm still resolve to /opt/homebrew/bin and run.
At c7cb8d2 the same three git commands failed on this PATH (unable to access '/opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig').
2. The PATH change widens no grant. The three read-only grants are the dsh package, the warmed MCP dir and the developer tools. None of them reads the child's PATH:
resolveDshEntry(binary, sourceEnv) resolves the package grant from the original PATH;
systemToolsFirst rewrites env.PATH on the child's copy only (from childEnvironment), after the grant is computed, and only when the developer-tools grant applies;
the Seatbelt options take no PATH input.
The function also drops empty PATH entries, which tightens what the child can run, not loosens it. There are no name collisions to shadow: no file in any seat-launch/*/bin or in ~/.local/bin has a counterpart in /usr/bin.
One expected side effect inside the confined child only: python3, make and curl now resolve to the /usr/bin versions, not Homebrew's. That isn't a defect.
3. The minor is closed. A dsh attach with Seatbelt unavailable now throws confined dsh sandbox.mode=workspace requires macOS Seatbelt: sandbox-exec not found. and gives no bwrap hint. The test pins the exact string: putting the old Claude-plus-bwrap text back for dsh reddens "carries confined dsh to the Seatbelt check". Other adapters keep their own label and the Linux hint.
Suites.attach.test.mjs + adapters.dsh.confined.test.mjs pass 124/124 at this head. The earlier witnesses still apply because those lines are unchanged since c7cb8d2: the attach hook, the Seatbelt probe, the shape check and the grant. I left the PATH-assertion mutation to Rhea, per the ask.
GATE: PASS 919b6fe — bare git now resolves to the granted /usr/bin shim on the live seat PATH and works in the confined profile; the PATH rewrite is child-only and feeds no grant; the dsh refusal names dsh with no bwrap hint.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Gate on #2853 at 919b6fe. I read the diff and the code at that head. I did not run the CLI test suite.
HOLD. A confined dsh attach does not refuse when git cannot resolve inside the sandbox. developerToolsDir returns null when no developer tools are installed, and its comment says "the seat then runs without git rather than failing" (cli/src/lib/adapters/dsh.js, the developerToolsDir block). The spawn sets DEVELOPER_DIR and PATH only when the result is non-null (dsh.js:451-455). performAttach checks only the Seatbelt probe (cli/src/commands/agent.js, the confined-dsh branch). So a confined dsh attach on a Mac without Command Line Tools or Xcode succeeds. Bare git then resolves to Homebrew, because PATH is left unchanged, and the PR's own comment says Homebrew git fails inside the sandbox. This is not an unsandboxed fallback, since Seatbelt still wraps the seat. It is the silent degrade the ask forbids. The fix is to refuse with a clear message in performAttach, or at spawn, when developerToolsDir returns null for dsh.
PASS. systemToolsFirst runs only inside dsh's confined spawn (dsh.js:451-455). The agent.js change adds an adapter parameter and touches no PATH, so no other adapter's PATH order changes. The test at adapters.dsh.confined.test.mjs:53 asserts the order.
HOLD. The tests do not exercise a git-resolution refusal, because none exists. The developerToolsDir tests (adapters.dsh.confined.test.mjs, the null-return cases) pin a silent null, not a refusal. The attach-level tests in attach.test.mjs cover the Seatbelt-unavailable refusal and the non-confined shapes. Add a performAttach test for a confined dsh with no developer tools that asserts the refusal message, and a test that the spawn is not reached.
Non-blocking: DEVELOPER_DIR_SHAPES accepts any /Applications/*.app/Contents/Developer. The realpath check and the read-only grant keep this bounded, so I raise no concern.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Re-verdict on #2853 at 919b6fe, against the corrected check 1. My earlier HOLD assumed the no-git refusal was the requirement. It is not, so that HOLD is withdrawn.
PASS. No path from a confined dsh attach to an unsandboxed spawn. The attach gate returns mode workspace only when isConfinedDsh accepts the one confined shape (cli/src/lib/adapters/dsh.jsconfinesOwnSandbox; cli/src/commands/agent.jsresolveAttachSandbox). For that mode, performAttach throws unless the Seatbelt probe is available. The spawn computes confined from the same isConfinedDsh(ctx.environment) (dsh.js:366). When it is true, wrapArgvWithSeatbelt runs unconditionally (dsh.js:443-467). Nothing in the confined branch skips the wrap when the developer-tools dir is null. Missing tools change only DEVELOPER_DIR and the read-only list.
Outside the check, and not caused by this PR: a dsh environment with no sandbox key passes validation (isConfinedDsh returns false at dsh.js:47), and its spawn runs plain (confined=false). The adapter's own header says a seat "runs plain, or confined", so this is the intended plain mode, not a fallback from a confined attach. Say so if you want dsh to refuse a missing sandbox block.
PASS. systemToolsFirst runs only inside dsh's confined spawn (dsh.js:451-455). agent.js adds an adapter argument and touches no PATH, so no other adapter's order changes. The test at cli/__tests__/adapters.dsh.confined.test.mjs:53 asserts it.
PASS. withSeat defaults _developerToolsDir to null (the no-tools case), so every existing confined-turn test runs the no-tools path. The confined-turn tests assert the Seatbelt wrap and the pinned proxy under that path. The grant tests cover the tools-present case, and the attach.test.mjs tests cover the Seatbelt-unavailable refusal. Each case the PR names is pinned.
Non-blocking, for a row: with no developer tools, bare git inside a confined seat resolves to Homebrew git, which the PR's own comment says fails in the sandbox. That is a capability gap, as you put it. The seat has no working git. The test suite does not pin that outcome, so the gap is undocumented outside this review.

D106 (Sam-directed):
commonly agent attach dshcould not stand up a confined dsh seat on cli 0.1.185. SRE found it at the kite flip (write-up: SRE's d106 staging note).Why. Two gates disagreed, and no environment passed both:
isConfinedDsh(cli/src/lib/adapters/dsh.js:41) accepts only{ mode: 'workspace', network: { policy: 'restricted' } }with no trust, and throws on public or workspace trust.resolveAttachSandbox(cli/src/commands/agent.js) refusedmode: 'workspace'unless trust was public or workspace and the adapter was inADAPTERS_WITH_DEFAULT_SANDBOX(claude, codex, opencode, qwen).Change.
confinesOwnSandbox(environment), which isisConfinedDsh. It returns true for the one confined shape and throws on every other shape.resolveAttachSandboxtakes the adapter object and asks that hook first. If it says yes, the declared mode is returned as-is. The gate therefore admits nothing the adapter would refuse at spawn. Every other adapter (no hook) goes through the unchanged trust gates.performAttachpasses the adapter it already resolved. After the gate, dsh takes the existing Seatbelt branch, which still refuses when Seatbelt is unavailable. Its log line now says "confined dsh … (restricted network)" instead of "public … network retained".assertSandboxDeclaredForPublicPod) is unchanged.Tests (
cli/__tests__/attach.test.mjs, new describe "dsh's confined shape (D106)"):attach dshwith the confined env resolves{ mode: 'workspace', trust: undefined }.Second fix: git inside the confined sandbox (49f1ae4). Confined dsh is now the path for DeepSeek writers, so a writer must run tests and commit. Measured on the host with the exact profile dsh builds: a shell and
node --testran, but git did not./usr/bin/gitis an xcrun shim, and inside the sandbox it couldn't read the developer tools ("No developer tools were found"). The confined spawn now grants that directory (DEVELOPER_DIR, orxcode-select -p) read-only and setsDEVELOPER_DIRfor the child.Re-probed with the grant:
git init, commit, branch and anode --testrun all succeed;~/.sshreads and outbound to example.com stay denied.If no tools are installed, there's no grant and no failure. Tests: the grant is passed read-only (no
file-writerule names it),DEVELOPER_DIRreaches the child, anddeveloperToolsDirresolves the declared or selected dir and returns null otherwise.The grant is bounded (c7cb8d2, after the connector-ops HOLD).
DEVELOPER_DIRandxcode-selectare both settable by whoever starts the seat, so the realpath is granted only if it is/Library/Developer/CommandLineToolsor/Applications/<name>.app/Contents/Developer; anything else (/, home, tmp, a link out of those) gets no grant.Bare git on a seat's PATH (0d34e0a, after vera's HOLD). The probe above used
/usr/bin/git. Seat runners put/opt/homebrew/binahead of/usr/bin, so baregitwas Homebrew git, which fails inside the profile reading/opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig. When the tools are granted, the child's PATH now starts with/usr/bin, and the other entries keep their order. Re-probed on the host with kite's live PATH and the profile from this branch, running baregit init, commit and branch:unable to access '/opt/homebrew/etc/gitconfig'(vera's finding, reproduced);/usr/binfirst, with the grant: exit 0. xcrun logs a non-fatal note that it can't write its cache in the system temp dir;/usr/binfirst, without the grant: fails (xcode-select), so the grant is still load-bearing;~/.sshare denied, andnode -vandnpm -vstill work.The dsh Seatbelt-unavailable refusal now names dsh and drops the bwrap hint, which dsh refuses.
Local run (container, node 22, at 49f1ae4; later heads verified by CI only):
attach.test.mjs+ the dsh adapter suites passed 127/127 three times.npm run lint(src) is clean. Mutants:Tier 2 (sandbox gate). CTO routes the gates; connector-ops does the lane review. This PR doesn't start a dsh seat (TASK-401 hold).
