Why

Connector create was membership-only for every chat bridge. Any pod member could bind the pod to a Slack channel, a Telegram group or a GroupMe group, which streams the pod into a chat people outside it can read. #3436 fixed Discord alone, with an inline check. This puts one rule in one place for all of them (D249, Cofounder 11-04).

The rule

backend/services/chatRelay/bindSurface.ts: binding a pod to a shared surface needs pod authority, meaning an instance admin, or the pod's creator while still a listed member (the TASK-168 rule).

platform shared when
Discord, GroupMe always
Slack anything other than the installer's own DM (chatType: 'im' with no channelId)
Telegram any chat that isn't private; decided at code redemption

Unknown types and unknown or missing chat types are treated as shared (fail closed). A test checks that every type in chatRelayIntegrationTypes() has a declaration.

The refusal is a 403 { code: 'shared_surface_needs_pod_authority' }, shown in en and zh-CN through the new key connectors.sharedSurfaceCreatorOnly.

Where it's checked

path gate
POST /api/integrations (Slack, Discord, GroupMe) the rule; replaces #3436's inline Discord check
POST /api/integrations (Telegram) deferred to redemption, since no chat exists yet
GET /api/discord/install-link/:podId the rule (one change: a creator who has left the pod is now refused)
PATCH /:id: chat-picking fields, or podId the rule, judged against the pod the row will serve
Telegram code redemption the rule against the row's createdBy. A plain member's code redeemed in a group writes nothing, and the code stays usable in a private chat
Telegram /tldr, GroupMe !pod the rule before the pod summary goes out to the group
Slack OAuth not gated: it can't bind a shared surface (always the installer's DM)
Discord PATCH of serverId/channelId already refused (F90)

Legacy rows that plain members made before this change keep working. Only the two outbound summary commands are gated at runtime.

zh-CN: 「只有这个 Pod 的创建者才能把共享频道连接进来。」 It follows the sibling string linkInstallCreatorOnly; Pod stays in English, and there's no 您.

Docs: a new section in docs/integrations/INTEGRATION_CONTRACT.md, with a pointer in the README.

…ared chat (F143)

Binding a pod to a chat people outside it can read (a Slack channel, a Discord
channel, a Telegram group, a GroupMe group) now needs authority over the pod:
its creator or an instance admin. One rule in chatRelay/bindSurface.ts decides,
and every create, retarget and code redemption path consults it, replacing
Discord's inline check from #3436. A Telegram private chat stays member-level.
Telegram /tldr and GroupMe !pod no longer send the pod summary into a group
someone without authority bound. The refusal reads in en and zh-CN.

Walkthrough

Shared chat-surface authority checks now govern connector creation, retargeting, Telegram binding, and summary commands. Discord combined-command responses account for explicit refusals. The frontend displays localized guidance for recognized refusal responses. Tests and integration documentation cover the policy and its enforcement.

Changes: Shared surface binding authority

Layer / File(s) Summary
Surface audience and authority policy
backend/services/chatRelay/bindSurface.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/chatRelay.bindSurface.test.js, docs/integrations/INTEGRATION_CONTRACT.md, docs/integrations/README.md
The policy classifies private and shared chat surfaces, checks pod authority, detects surface retargets, and defines the 403 refusal. Tests and documentation describe these rules.
Connector creation and retargeting
backend/routes/integrations.ts, backend/routes/discord.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/integrations.sharedSurfaceBind.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/discord.management-auth.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/routeRateLimitGuard.baseline.json
Connector creation and surface retargeting check authority. The Discord install-link route uses the same policy and a rate limit. Route tests cover allowed and refused cases.
Chat binding and summary commands
backend/routes/webhooks/telegram.ts, backend/integrations/providers/groupmeProvider.ts, backend/services/discordCommandService.ts, backend/services/discordMultiCommandService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/telegram.webhook*.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/integrations/groupmeProvider*.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/discord*.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/discord.interactions.summaryVisibility.test.js
Telegram redemption and Telegram, GroupMe, and Discord summary commands check authority for shared surfaces. Discord combined-command visibility accounts for explicit refusals. Tests cover member, creator, and admin cases.
Localized frontend refusals
frontend/src/v2/connectors/channelModel.ts, frontend/src/v2/connectors/useChannelConnectors.ts, frontend/src/v2/components/V2DiscordCallback.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/locales/{en,zh-CN}.json, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/*
The frontend recognizes the shared-surface refusal code and displays localized guidance for connector updates and Discord integration creation. Tests cover English, Simplified Chinese, and other error codes.

The shared-surface authority rule is enforced across creation, retargeting, Telegram binding and summary commands. Two minor gaps remain. The Discord install-link refusal does not carry the documented error code, so clients cannot show localized guidance. A GroupMe retarget by the pod creator can succeed while the next summary command is still refused. Both have bounded impact and safe fallbacks.

Comment thread backend/routes/integrations.ts Fixed
…and three edges from review (F143)

From #3451's review round:
- Discord /commonly-summary checks the row's binder against the pod-authority
  rule, like Telegram /tldr and GroupMe !pod.
- GroupMe !pod reads the summary from the same stored row it checked.
- POST /api/integrations refuses a non-string type with 400 first, so the rule
  never depends on Mongoose's cast.
- A refused Telegram group redemption describes the code, not the person, so it
  reads right when the pod's creator redeems a member's code.

HEAD: d1d409b — GATE: PASS

One review round on an authorization change. Two fresh Opus reviewers, one hunting for bypasses and one for regressions to legitimate users, both passed at 620cc08. Their findings were folded in, and the bypass reviewer re-checked the delta at this head.

Bypass hunt:

  • Every writer checked: the slack, discord, telegram and groupme writers across routes, services and integrations. That covers POST, PATCH (dotted and $ keys refused, server-owned keys stripped), a podId move, a connect-code re-mint (keeps createdBy), redemption against createdBy (a missing or deleted creator is refused), the webhook projector, Slack OAuth (always the installer's DM), relay commands and the Discord command service.
  • No way in through config: chatId and chatType are server-owned, so a member can't fake a private Slack or Telegram chat.
  • hasPodAuthority re-reads the user from the database: it accepts an admin, or the pod creator only while still a listed member.
  • Fail-closed: unknown types and chat types deny, and a database error refuses with nothing written.
  • Outbound: live relay and decision cards go to private chats only, and the three summary commands are gated.

Legitimate users:

  • Creators and admins: they can still create, retarget and redeem on every platform. Refusing a creator who has left the pod matches TASK-168.
  • Plain members: they keep Telegram private chats, the Slack OAuth DM, edits to non-chat fields, and moving a private-chat row to another pod.
  • Legacy rows: only the outbound summary commands change for them.
  • Frontend: sharedSurfaceRefusal maps only its exact code, and every other code keeps its existing fallback.
  • zh-CN: two passes, accepted: 「只有这个 Pod 的创建者才能把共享频道连接进来。」, which matches the sibling key linkInstallCreatorOnly.
  • Tests and docs: fixture edits only add createdBy, no assertion is weakened, and the docs match the code.

Folded in at d1d409b (re-checked):

  1. Discord /commonly-summary is gated on the single, deferred and multi-pod paths. No refused pod's summary appears in a multi-pod reply; its name was already shown before this change.
  2. GroupMe !pod checks and reads the same pod.
  3. A non-string type gets 400 before anything else.
  4. The Telegram redemption refusal now describes the code, not the sender.

The backend broad set passes: 75 suites, 850 tests, with tsc clean. Each fix's reverse check turns its tests red again.

Low or info, deferred:

  • Telegram /status tells a legacy group the pod's name and lead agent.
  • A connect code works for whoever holds it, the same as before this change.
  • The ChatRoom GroupMe create shows a generic English error.
  • A member's pod-creator re-mint in a group is refused by design.

Use the authorized pod for the !pod summary query.

The !pod gate authorizes the pod resolved from latest. The Summary query reads the pod from the earlier integration snapshot. If a retarget write lands between those two reads, the creator is checked against the new pod, and the summary of the old pod is sent to the group. Use the same resolved pod ID for both steps.

Suggested fix
                 const owner = latest || integration;
-                const pod = await Pod.findById(owner.podId ?? integration.podId).lean();
+                const podId = owner.podId ?? integration.podId;
+                const pod = await Pod.findById(podId).lean();
                 try {
                   await assertCanBindSurface({
                     userId: (owner as { createdBy?: unknown }).createdBy, pod, type: 'groupme', config: effectiveConfig,
                   });
                 } catch (error) {
                   if (!(error instanceof SurfaceBindRefusedError)) throw error;
                   await groupmeService.sendMessage(
                     botId,
                     "Only the pod's creator can share this pod's summary with a group. Ask them to reconnect it.",
                   );
                   return res.sendStatus(200);
                 }
                 const latestSummary = await Summary.findOne({
                   type: 'chats',
-                  podId: integration.podId,
+                  podId,
                 })

The window is narrow. The trigger needs a podId write to a user-scoped GroupMe connector during one webhook request. The fix removes the divergence and leaves behavior unchanged when the two reads agree.

…t check reads a string pod id (F143, CodeQL)

CodeQL on #3451:
- GET /api/discord/install-link/:podId now reads the pod for the bind rule,
  so it takes listIntegrationsRateLimit like the other Discord routes; the
  rate-limit guard baseline drops it from the unlimited list.
- PATCH's retarget check passes String(podId) to Pod.findById, as POST does.
  podId is already validated as an id string above; this keeps a query object
  from ever reaching the rule.

Return the shared refusal body from the install-link route.

When assertCanBindSurface refuses an install link, the catch branch returns { error: 'Access denied' }. The documented refusal for this route is { code: 'shared_surface_needs_pod_authority' }. The response omits that code, so the contract in docs/integrations/INTEGRATION_CONTRACT.md is not met for this route.

The current frontend maps this route by HTTP status, so the creator-only message still appears. Clients that read the documented code cannot use it from this route.

Return the error's body with the same 403 status.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject creator retargets that leave a plain member as the GroupMe row creator.

The PATCH authority check uses the requesting pod creator, so the write can succeed on a legacy GroupMe row created by a plain member. The write does not change createdBy. The !pod handler then checks that member and can refuse the summary. The group receives "Only the pod's creator can share this pod's summary with a group" after the creator has just bound it.

Choose one fix. Refuse a retarget when the row's createdBy cannot pass the bind rule, and tell the creator to create a new connector. Or record the authorizing user on the row and use that identity in both the PATCH and !pod checks.

…d summaries (F143)

CodeRabbit on #3451: the multi-pod /commonly-summary reply turned ephemeral
whenever any result failed, so one pod refused by the bind rule hid the
allowed pods' summaries from the channel. A refusal now carries refused: true,
and combinedReplyIsPublic keeps the reply public when every other result
succeeded or was refused. All refused, a real error, and a single-pod refusal
stay ephemeral.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Remove refused pod names before making a combined reply public.

When one pod succeeds and another is refused, combinedReplyIsPublic sets flags: 0. The reply still includes the refused pod’s populated name from Lines 206–208. This exposes a private pod’s name to the Discord channel despite the refusal. Redact refused pod metadata in public replies, or keep those results ephemeral. Add a mixed-result test that asserts the refused pod’s name is absent. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
