fix(security): keep credentials within runtime boundaries - #1521
Saved projects and supported exports could retain credentials or runtime login bindings. This first layer removes recognized credentials from typed address and executable-parameter fields, reports counted losses, and restores the live in-memory source after writing. Feature data, prose, foreign code and opaque plugin content remain intact; unchecked content is reported. This is not a general secret scanner.
Peer exchange retains a credential only when the original source still matches exactly. Successful assistant output scrubs active secrets from keys and values. Service discovery keeps foreign-origin history through fallback, save/reopen and rendering; same-origin discovery retains explicit connections, including public connections that acquire a login later. Replacing a peer project reports retired pending reads through the ordinary project-reset path.
Generated tool, script, RPC and transport errors now share an output projection that removes runtime wrappers, cleans credential-bearing addresses, then masks active values. RPC correlation ids, codes and reply structure are preserved.
This is the independent credential/output layer split from #1461. Execution scopes, consent plans, revocation, deferred authority and the compact approval UI remain in the dependent PR. No dependency, project format, command parameter or plugin guest interface is added. Revoked secrets are not retained for redaction, and opaque content can still contain credentials.
Testing
Validation of published head a00df9112b4ef21e3d5b4905a4c45428e65a6a1c passed:
cargo xtask ci: formatting, Clippy with warnings denied, complete workspace tests and layer checks.
Locked browser build with RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings and all-file pre-commit/publication checks.
Local Standards and Spec reviews of credential/output ownership, current-main composition and the finite cache-fixture corrections.
Actual regressions cover changed database tables through peer normalization and the database protocol fixture, both GDAL and DuckDB origins on one layer, anonymous Coverage/Tiles callbacks, matching-title retired reads, supported address prefixes, and clean/lossy/opaque output notices.
Generated-error regressions cover early tool validation, structured script failures, RPC rejection messages, bound/unbound fetch errors and active values that overlap a URL scheme. Public returned-error and RPC probes pass. Clean diagnostic-text fixtures share the existing login-registry guard with mutating tests; assertions and short-secret coverage remain intact.
Queue-pressure fixtures run in their own existing test executable; shared-cache unit tests use the existing cache/alarm guards. Assertions and production queue limits are preserved. The complete workspace and affected controls pass with ordinary parallel execution.
The local contract-documentation report is above its threshold; its only remaining failure is a valid engine cfg pattern unsupported by the local parser. No suppression or check configuration changed. The native screenshot and tests do not establish browser runtime behavior.

New Features
Saved projects, exports, and shared projects remove recognized credentials from supported addresses and executable parameters while keeping credentials in the active project.
Notices report removed credentials, omitted address settings, and content that could not be checked. Exact matching saved snapshots can restore credentials; shared-project exchanges may retain credentials only for unchanged, uniquely matched sources.
While logged in, known secrets are masked in generated output. Short passwords may also mask ordinary text. This affects displayed output, not stored data, requests, or permission checks.
Service discovery limits which query settings are carried to discovered addresses, and cross-origin links avoid reusing saved login details.
Replacing a project clears work and approvals tied to the previous project while retaining the conversation.
This change adds shared credential classification and address sanitization, applies durable processing to saved and generated output, and adds peer-specific project exchange. Service discovery tracks origin changes and withheld query settings. Project replacement also resets project-specific UI and assistant state.

A rabbit checks each address line, And keeps live keys where they belong. Saved pages shed what must not shine, While notices report what changed along. Across the bridge, matched slots retain, Then rabbit trots through fields again.

Security (confidence: medium-high).credential() doesn't recognise two common API-key query names, so saved projects, peer/widget output and history keep their values unchanged and without a notice:
appid (OpenWeatherMap tile URLs, ?appid=…) is not in the exact list on this line.
subscription-key (Azure Maps and Azure AI services, ?subscription-key=…) normalises to subscriptionkey, which is not in the containment list (about line 122).
The audit and diagnostics path already catches the second one: log_sensitive treats subscription + key as a secret (about line 198). The saved-output classifier should not be narrower than the log classifier. A minimal fix is to add "appid" to the exact list here and "subscriptionkey" to the containment list, with a regression assertion next to the existing canonical_names_remove_encoded_and_unresolved_pairs_without_touching_values cases.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
1ded5bd: Added the exact canonical names appid, subscriptionkey, clientkey and saskey, including case/encoding variants. The classifier and actual saved-output regressions pass; public client_id and application_id controls stay unchanged.
I read the core of the diff (address classification, peer exchange, durable output, roles, project and service discovery, UI resolver, docs), plus the mechanical cmd/* edits and the test modules. I could not compile or run the tests, so these findings come from reading the code.
No prior review threads existed, so no concerns were skipped as already raised.
Bugs
Behaviour change to confirm (medium confidence).advertised_tiles now drops user-supplied query settings, including a token, from OGC API tile links that are advertised by a service, even when they are same-origin. Settings are kept only for SAFE_OPTIONS and constructed sub-addresses, and F2 is empty. Each withheld destination is counted and noticed, and web-data.md documents the policy. This is intentional, but it breaks URL-token OGC API tile services unless users re-add the layer with their own address. Please confirm this is the desired trade-off.
Silent rewrite of generated text (low confidence).generated_text in durable.rs discards the scrub_addresses count. A bare s3:bucket/key or https:/host/x in a history message is rewritten to s3: or https: with no notice. The code comment says generated text is cleaned without a notice, so this may be deliberate. It does conflict with the "never silent" rule for text saved in history.
Security
Credential name gap (inline comment posted on crates/data/src/address.rs:107, medium-high confidence). appid (OpenWeatherMap) and subscription-key (Azure) are not recognised by the saved-output classifier. The log classifier already treats subscription + key as secret, so the two policies disagree.
Performance
No significant issues. public_text now always calls logins::scrub, which is cheap while no logins are active. Exchange::record, census and project_json each run once per push and are bounded by MAX_ENTRIES and MAX_BYTES.
Quality
Prepare::string counts one withheld address in both withheld and addresses, which produces two notices for one slot. It is a reporting nit, not a data loss.
Report::notices sends notify text for the overflow case in English, outside tl!/i18n. The engine's existing notices are also English, so this is consistent with that code.
AGENTS.md
I found no unwrap, expect, panic!, or unsafe added to non-test code. The matches are all inside #[cfg(test)] modules.
base64 is already a dependency of rustgis-tiles, so the new decode in logins.rs needs no new dependency.
The ui-egui resolver's Next branch reuses the bound URL from request_from, so the saved connection's login survives same-origin hops. I checked this and did not raise it.
I left 0 earlier concerns alone because no prior threads existed.

Review comments at @crates/map/src/source.rs:

regression test verifying the password is scrubbed.
Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/connectiontree.rs:

Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs:

replaced. Only update the message if it still belongs to that retired read,
preserving any message from a newer operation.
- Around line 5581-5585: Update the tile assertions in the test to require
exactly one tile layer and verify that its URL matches the expected resolved
URL. Keep the existing assertion that the unresolved RGSYNTH_ placeholder is
absent.
Review comments at @docs/python.md:
- Around line 142-144: Revise the widget credential guarantee in this
documentation to say credentials are removed only from supported address fields
and recognized executable parameters; clarify that notebook source and opaque
plugin parameters may still contain credentials and are sent unchanged. Remove
the blanket claim that Python-held credentials are never sent, while preserving
the warning behavior description.
Review comments at @docs/user-guide/workspace.md:
- Around line 35-36: Clarify in the saved-address documentation that credential
removal applies only to recognized passwords, access keys, tokens, and
signatures; unrecognized credentials may remain without a notice, so readers
should review addresses before sharing. Preserve the existing explanation of
what notices count.

Bugs (confidence: medium). A withheld address is counted twice. The Kept::Withheld arm at 255-258 increments report.withheld, then this block also increments report.addresses for the same slot, so the user gets two notices for one address and the layer-address count is inflated. A minimal fix is to count the withheld slot only once, e.g. skip the addresses increment when Kept::Withheld was taken, and add a test asserting one notice for a malformed wrapper (the existing a_malformed_wrapper_is_withheld_at_durable_output discards the report, so it does not cover this).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
aba5b1e: These are two different report dimensions: addresses counts changed address slots; withheld identifies those whose malformed representation could not be safely retained. One malformed address changes one slot and contributes one withheld detail, not two changed addresses. The existing malformed-wrapper test now asserts both totals and the notices, plus the clean control. Dropping the address total would hide the fact that the layer address changed.
Validation: full cargo xtask ci, the locked browser build with RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings, and all-file hooks passed on this commit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bugs (confidence: medium).command_result runs public_addresses over the whole result, so top-level keys go through logins::scrub too. An active login secret that is a substring of a fixed response key renames it silently: with a password id, {"id": 4, ...} from run_command becomes {"[redacted]": 4, ...} with no notice. The run path avoids this via public_envelope (and has a test for it), so the two paths disagree. Suggest keeping the top-level keys of the command envelope fixed here too (values scrubbed), or adding a run_command regression test with a short secret that matches a key.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
aba5b1e: command_result receives an arbitrary command payload, whose property names can come from data. Those names must be scrubbed as well as values. The adapter-owned notices/layer metadata is added afterward and is not redacted again. public_envelope and public_metadata preserve keys only for their fixed schemas; applying that exemption to arbitrary command results would expose a secret used as a data field name. Existing short-secret and colliding-field regressions cover this distinction.
Validation: full cargo xtask ci, the locked browser build with RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings, and all-file hooks passed on this commit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Security (confidence: medium). The features branch (line 120) honours l["anonymous"], but the coverage describe (here) and the tileset list (line 168) do not. If discovery returned to the connection's origin through a foreign hop, request_from sees matching origins and attaches the saved login. The tile add also records p["connection"] (line 155) unconditionally, which tags the layer with the connection even though the engine marks it anonymous. Suggest: when l["anonymous"] is true, request the inner address without a login and omit connection on all three branches, and seed crossed_origin from that flag (line 174).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
aba5b1e: Anonymous discovery provenance now governs Coverage and Tiles initial requests, their saved params and actual completion. DescribeCoverage/GetCoverage and tile-list/final-tile requests remain unbound, connection is omitted, and the tile resolver starts with a sticky anonymous flag. The existing fetch-spy regression follows the real coverage callback through GetCoverage and the tile callback through layer creation, with an authenticated same-origin positive control.

Security (confidence: medium). A non-empty object or array under a secret-named key (password, token, credentials…) is not rewritten. The branch sets unchecked and returns None, which leaves the value verbatim, so a nested {"username": …, "password": …} is saved with the password intact and only an "unchecked" notice. The notice is honest, and SECURITY.md documents it as preserved-not-verified, but this contradicts the scrubber's own holds_secret treatment of the same shape. Suggest recursing into the value with the same scrubber (or replacing it with an empty container) instead of keeping it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
aba5b1e: Structured unknown credential values intentionally follow the opaque-content contract: preserve their meaning and report suspicious content as unchecked. They are not certified credential-free. holds_secret is the stricter recording-admission check; it refuses a new recording rather than destructively rewriting a user structure. SECURITY.md and the clean/opaque regression document and exercise these separate behaviors.
Validation: full cargo xtask ci, the locked browser build with RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings, and all-file hooks passed on this commit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Security (confidence: low-medium).DATA keys (text, data, value…) are dropped from scrubbing and also from the unchecked check (line 198 excludes them), so no notice is given. service.add sends the capabilities document as text (serviceui.rs around line 139/151), and a task or history record that captures it keeps any ?token= URL in its hrefs unchanged and unreported. Either scan DATA strings for credential-bearing addresses and report them, or document this as an exception in SECURITY.md next to the feature-data caveat.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
aba5b1e: Service capabilities, supplied documents and coverage descriptions now have explicit Opaque roles. Their bytes remain intact, but suspicious recorded content produces the counted unchecked-content notice. The regression covers every service entry point and clean documents; SECURITY.md describes this boundary. Dataset text remains data rather than being rewritten as a URL.
Validation: full cargo xtask ci, the locked browser build with RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings, and all-file hooks passed on this commit.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bugs (confidence: low-medium).project_json is a read accessor, but it now calls project.saved_text, which goes through durable::output_remembered. Each call with credentials records a restore snapshot in the 32-entry explicit-save cache, so repeated calls can evict the user's real saves. Reopening identical text can then restore credentials from a snapshot the user never saved. It also now fails with "still downloading" while imports are pending, where it used to return text. If this is intended, document it in the docstring; otherwise use the non-remembering output path for this accessor.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
aba5b1e: project_json is intentionally save-equivalent and uses the same bounded same-process restore behavior as project.saveAs. Identical text replaces its cache entry rather than consuming another slot on each poll. Its Python docstring and guide now state that behavior and the refusal while imports are incomplete.
Validation: full cargo xtask ci, the locked browser build with RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings, and all-file hooks passed on this commit.
Scope: the full PR against main, 105 files, about 13.5k diff lines. Most of the .roles(&[]) churn across cmd/*.rs is mechanical, and I checked it only by sampling. I read the new trust core (durable.rs, roles.rs, parameters.rs, address.rs, peer.rs, project.rs), the assistant redaction path, the Python and web bridges, and service discovery. I also searched the added lines for unwrap/expect/panic/eprintln/std::time/unsafe; all hits were in test code. I did not build or run the tests.
Bugs
A withheld address is counted under both withheld and addresses, giving two notices for one slot. durable.rs:272, medium.
command_result (run_command/run_tool) rewrites top-level keys through the active-login scrub, so a short secret silently renames a fixed response key. The run envelope avoids this. tools.rs:373, medium.
project_json() now uses the remembering output path, so a read accessor fills the 32-entry explicit-save cache and can fail while imports are pending. apps/rustgis-python/src/lib.rs:186, low-medium.
durable::notify's doc says it emits "only after rollback", but it is called from inside command bodies. A later Err withdraws those notices (lib.rs ~1650). Harmless in the call sites I traced, but the doc is wrong. Low.
Security
Coverage describe and tileset-list requests ignore the anonymous flag, and the tile layer is tagged with the connection regardless. A same-origin return via a foreign hop can attach the saved login. serviceui.rs:146, medium.
A non-empty object or array under a secret key is kept verbatim with only an "unchecked" notice. The notice is disclosed in SECURITY.md, but it conflicts with holds_secret. roles.rs:163, medium.
DATA keys such as text skip both scrubbing and the unchecked notice, so a service.add capabilities document with ?token= URLs can be recorded unreported. roles.rs:173, low-medium.
Performance
Nothing new beyond the remembered-cache growth noted under Bugs.
Quality
Several tests discard the loss report (e.g. project.rsa_malformed_wrapper_is_withheld_at_durable_output), so the "test both ways" rule is not exercised there. Left for the release quality pass.
Some C::new(...) chains in arcgis.rs and connections.rs may not match rustfmt output at max_width = 140. I could not run cargo fmt --check, so this is unverified.
AGENTS.md
No unsafe and no non-test unwrap/expect/panic found in the added lines.
The notice-channel and counted-loss rules are mostly followed. The findings above are the exceptions.
Wasm-relevant std::time/std::fs use appears only in test code.
Prior reviews
26 earlier threads were on the PR. I did not re-raise any of them; 3 are resolved. I left 23 open ones alone, including the peer runtime-binding count (peer.rs:393), since the code they point at is unchanged.
I checked one earlier concern and found it addressed: the web embed now notifies on exchange failure (web.rs:415).
Checked and not raised
A reported poll-guard gap in serviceui.rs (a retired import could land in a new project). Project replacement moves downloading into the put-aside state (lib.rs:1748), so download_is_pending already fails. Not a bug.

Only the 20 largest changes are listed, as the stats file provides them.
The complete follow-up is in 1ded5bd. It includes the query-name aliases, counted collection-link omissions, exact streamed/database source retention, feature-group foreign-hop provenance, and the adjacent output/logging corrections.
Advertised service links remain authoritative. RustGIS does not copy a URL token onto a link the service advertised without it; it reports the withheld destination. Same-origin explicit header logins remain supported, while the resolver carries each destination’s existing binding rather than selecting the original login again after a foreign hop. The clean/authenticated controls and failure notices pass.
Generated diagnostics use the existing output-only security projection; user-authored prose and source data remain intact. Address and withheld counts describe overlapping kinds of loss rather than a unique-slot total, as documented by the report API. Neither point changes execution or the live source.
Validation on the independent credential head: full cargo xtask ci (4,305 test invocations, zero failures), 264 affected native regressions, strict locked browser build and all-file hooks passed. Actual Python widget tests passed 9/9. The PR body includes the inspected current output-preparation notice.

aba5b1e completes this review batch. Changed peer database sources are deferred before normalization and remain deferred until an explicit matching login; anonymous discovery is preserved through Coverage and Tiles callbacks; service documents have explicit opaque roles and counted unchecked-content notices. The inline replies explain the intended report dimensions, arbitrary result-key scrubbing, opaque-value preservation and save-equivalent Python accessor.
Full local CI, the browser build with warnings denied and all-file hooks pass on the published commit. Native UI evidence is updated in the PR description. GitHub checks and current-head review are still running.

Security (confidence: medium). The command id is never checked for credentials. A script line whose first token is an address, such as https://h.invalid/a?token=… with no parameters, parses as Ok((id, Null)). command returns None for null params, so the line is kept verbatim. Prepare::script then adds no edit, and no notice is given. The same happens on the suspicious-malformed branch at line 427: the id is copied raw into "{id} [parameters withheld]", while the notice says the command line was written without credentials.
Fix: run the id through durable::public_address before using it. Replace it with the public form and count the line when it changes, or with a placeholder when it is Withheld. Add a regression for a bare-URL line in a script.run cell, in both the clean and the malformed form.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in d533b89. Executable identifiers now pass through the shared display projection even with null parameters or a malformed tail. The same correction covers stored task/model/history identifiers. The original identifiers remain unchanged for execution. Added regressions cover these paths and exact removal counts; full workspace CI, browser build with warnings denied, and hooks pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Performance (confidence: medium).public_text used to skip the scrub unless the text contained the login prefix. It now calls logins::scrub on every string and every object key of every tool result. scrub takes the registry lock, sorts the patterns, and copies the text one char at a time. With no active logins it is only an identity copy, so every read_features row and every command result pays this cost.
Suggested fix: add a fast path that returns text unchanged when no active redaction patterns exist and the text has no login prefix. Expose that check from logins next to scrub.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in d533b89. logins::scrub returns immediately when the registry has no entries and the text has no runtime wrapper. Active credentials, including short values, still take the redaction path. Full workspace CI and browser build pass.
Scope: I read the new address.rs, durable.rs, roles.rs, parameters.rs, peer.rs, the assistant tools.rs changes, pgconn.rs, credentials.rs, the login helpers in project.rs, the retired-read handling in ui-egui, the Python bridge, and autosave. I did not review the mechanical per-command changes in cmd/*.rs, ogc.rs, map/lib.rs, service_logins.rs, audit.rs, or notebook.rs/items.rs in depth. I could not compile or run the tests here.
Bugs
logins::add_redactions has no minimum length. A one-character login secret redacts every occurrence of that character in all assistant output, tool results and key names, with no notice (low confidence; the tests appear to accept short patterns on purpose). Not posted inline.
Security
roles.rs:420: a script line's command id is never checked for credentials. A bare address line with no parameters is kept verbatim, and the malformed-line branch copies the id raw too, while the notice says the line was cleaned. Posted inline (medium).
Performance
assistant/src/tools.rs:330: public_text now runs logins::scrub on every string and key, with no fast path when no logins are active. Posted inline (medium).
Quality (for the release quality pass; not posted)
durable.rs: the Durable trait and the Vec impl carry two doc lines each, and some of them contradict each other.
address.rsinherit_reviewed: the F2_SCOPES branch is unreachable in production because the list is empty. It is covered only by tests.
Already raised (left alone, 6 threads): the withheld-address double count in durable.rs (still present, unanswered), the command-envelope top-level key renaming in tools.rs (still present, unanswered), the nested secret-keyed object kept verbatim in roles.rs (still present, unanswered), the DATA key exclusion in roles.rs (still present, unanswered), the project_json restore-snapshot behavior (now documented), and the project_log nested-address check (fixed). The DuckDB, coverage-withheld, appid/subscription-key, anonymous-hop, retired-read and peer normalization threads are addressed in the current code and are not re-raised.

The six reviewers are still running in the background, so there are no findings to report yet. The inline-comment tool is loaded and ready for the verified findings. I'll post them and write the summary once all six reports come back.
The identifier leak, no-login fast path, and duplicate/contradictory documentation are corrected in d533b89; full workspace CI, strict browser build, and hooks pass.
Short active credentials remain scrubbed intentionally: ignoring a one-character password would disclose it. The existing regression covers that confidentiality tradeoff. F2_SCOPES remains empty deliberately: there are no approved service-specific query inheritance exceptions. The comment now states that boundary; tests exercise the helper without enabling an exception. The older inline findings retain their existing individual dispositions.

a00df91 closes adjacent returned-error paths: early tool validation, script failures, JSON-RPC rejections and transport failures now clean credential-bearing addresses before masking active values. RPC ids/codes, successful-result handling and execution inputs are preserved. The new error projector, tool wrapper, RPC serializer and shared test guard have purpose/invariant documentation. Full workspace CI, strict browser build, public returned-error/RPC probes and all-file hooks pass.

# RustGIS — instructions for agents
## Quality gates
`cargo xtask ci` (fmt, clippy -D warnings, tests, layers) before every commit.
A new dependency must have a licence `deny.toml` allows (CI runs `cargo deny check licenses`); after
changing dependencies, run `cargo xtask notices` to refresh the `THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt` files the
packages ship (the release build fails on stale ones).
Pull requests run CI on Linux; pushes to `main` add macOS and Windows (x64 and ARM64). Label a
pull request `ci:windows`, `ci:macos` or `ci:full` to test there before merging (platform-specific
code, paths, file dialogs). The release build of the apps runs nightly

opengeos#1521 moved saving addresses from `project.rs` to `durable.rs`. The look rule
moves with it: `public_address_at` keeps a look on a plain address too, and its
template and S3 branches use the same closed list.

service.rs: main's credential changes (opengeos#1521) kept; the listing cut in
`layers` follows its withheld-address notice, and `coverage` refuses a
missing name through `not_listed`.

… keeps (opengeos#1330)
Since opengeos#1521, `redact_text` turns the message's "http://," into "http:,", for
`layer.addUrl` too, so the test matches "address (Add Data opens files)".

Keeps the legend's "columns" in layout.addElement's and layout.update's help and takes main's
.roles(&[]) on both (opengeos#1521).

The conflict was in crates/engine/src/cmd/service.rs, against opengeos#1521: a
document read off the frame keeps its rules for foreign hops. `discover`
takes the session, `left_template` follows `advertised_template_with`
(no login carried to the next document, foreign hops and withheld
addresses kept), and the off-frame coverage and features paths run in the
same `anonymously` scope as the blocking ones.

Summary

No suppression or check configuration changed. The native screenshot and tests do not establish browser runtime behavior.
UI evidence
Template export reports omitted source references through the normal notice consumer:
The before-image is from the earlier combined implementation. The after-image was freshly rendered and inspected from this independently validated lower branch. Approval-card changes belong to #1461.
Output preparation notice, displayed separately from the later Saved confirmation:
Supplied service documents remain intact and receive a counted unchecked-content notice when needed:
Stored-command error text redacts credential-shaped identifiers before display:
