Summary

Execution-policy layer stacked on #1521. Merge the independent credential/output layer first. Its query-name correction is in progress, so the stack is not merge-ready.

Untrusted commands and tools share engine admission. Approval binds raw parameters, executor-selected targets and destinations, executable content, the published plugin/tool load and runtime account choices. Permits are single-use; nested calls inherit the initiating scope. Task, notebook and model trust follows exact content through edits, Undo and rollback. Output-only parameter roles remain separate from authority metadata.

Deferred tools, downloads, exports, queued plugin commands, background reads and screenshots retain their initiating owner and authority. Login replacement, account selection changes, project replacement and revocation refuse stale work before the next controlled action or landing. Browser requests check after preparation awaits and immediately before sending. Failed handlers retire newly queued work without resurrecting consumed requests; refused file delivery completes its matching model report as a failure. Outer command exits also consume their undo merge key.

Approval cards show action labels, reasons, targets and destinations first; expandable Details retains the complete bounded sanitized request. Native User authority remains a convention. Unmodeled namespace transitions refuse exact approval before effects. Already-sent I/O and committed files cannot be recalled. Content-derived or misdeclared I/O, unattested native process bytes, unchanged legacy synchronous writers and an already-leaked live binding retain the documented limits.

Testing

Independent upper-layer validation at 0c192f1e222aac5c2205f8c3202725192f53ce4a passed:

  • cargo xtask ci: formatting, Clippy with warnings denied, workspace tests and layer checks.
  • Locked browser build with RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings, all-file hooks and normal publication guards.
  • Existing exact-target, in-run output, owner/foreign/revoked/replay, account-change, transport, plugin cancellation/load, file-read, model/script, service-discovery, export and rollback regressions pass in full CI.
  • The current lifecycle/service batch passed 81 engine cases and both actual UI pending-read controls before composition. It reproduced the review's undo, retired-model, rollback-file and foreign-fallback failures and the related Style/peer-read gaps before correction.
  • The complete local review of the combined change was followed by separate Standards and Spec checks of both split layers. Exact-tree comparison verifies that splitting retained the fixed combined source and the independently reviewed main analysis changes; it does not certify every unchanged transitive path.

The local contract-documentation report is above its threshold; its only remaining failure is a valid engine cfg pattern unsupported by that parser. No suppression or check configuration changed. Native browser orchestration tests do not execute web-sys in a browser. Cross-platform results remain the labelled GitHub checks.

UI evidence

Earlier full-script implementation and compact overview:

Before compacting the card Compact overview
Earlier full-script approval card Compact approval overview
Expanded request details and recording notice

Expanded exact request details

Recording refusal in Diagnostics and toast

These inspected native Assistant frames compare the earlier implementation with the compact overview and expanded Details. The earlier frame is an implementation comparison, not upstream main. The unchanged shared renderer also serves agent threads, which were not separately captured. These captures are reused because the approval components are unchanged by the current split/lifecycle batch. Credential-output notice evidence is in #1521.

Related issue

Dependent execution-policy layer of #1521, split from the original combined security change. Other audit findings and #1511 remain outside this scope.

Walkthrough

The PR introduces engine-wide policy scopes, effect declarations, frozen approvals, continuation checks, credential-safe output, peer exchange, and cancellation propagation. Assistant, MCP, plugin, browser, and UI paths now use these controls for deferred and direct work.

Changes: Policy and execution authority

Layer / File(s) Summary
Policy decisions and dispatch
crates/engine/src/policy/*, crates/engine/src/lib.rs
Commands now declare effects, roles, inputs, and transitions. Execution uses scopes, reviews, permits, and continuations.
Command planning
crates/engine/src/cmd/*
Command handlers gain effect metadata and input resolvers across project, data, export, plugin, and workflow operations.
Assistant and adapter integration

Deferred work and cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Continuation checks
crates/data/src/source/remote.rs, crates/tiles/src/cache.rs, crates/engine/src/policy/downloads.rs
Remote requests, downloads, reads, exports, and tool results retain authority and stop when project, account, plugin, or scope state changes.
Pinned tools and runners
crates/analysis/src/lib.rs, crates/geolibre/src/*, crates/plugins/src/*
Tool schemas, runners, and plugin loads are pinned and rejected when their published identity changes.
Browser and service flows
apps/rustgis-web/src/*, crates/ui-egui/src/geolibreui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/serviceui.rs
Fetch, renewal, import, and service steps check cancellation and current authority before sending, polling, or applying results.

Safe output and exchange

Layer / File(s) Summary
Durable output
crates/engine/src/project_log.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/items.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/notebook.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/presentation.rs

Silent credential removal from the recovery copy (Never silent). recovery_text discards the Report from output_owned, so the counted removals of layer addresses, keys and tokens are never shown. autosave.rs:670 writes this copy, and the restore message does not mention the loss. A layer whose token was stripped comes back after a crash with no notice, and saving the recovered project removes it for good. Please return the report alongside the text and surface its notices when the copy is written or restored. Confidence: high.

Updated in cbbd62d. Recovery now carries the output report in the atomic recovery header and publishes its counted notices after a successful restore. The existing crash/recover regression checks credential loss and clean silence. The project file format is unchanged.

Validated on that commit: full native CI, focused regressions and the strict wasm build pass.

Secret-named object or array values are kept verbatim, with no notice. When the key is secret-named and the value is an object or array, _ => None leaves it unchanged. The branch does not recurse, and it sets neither unchecked nor withheld. A saved step such as params: {"token": {"value": "abc"}} keeps abc in the saved file and the in-memory log. Suggested direction: replace the whole value with an empty string and count it as withheld, or recurse into it. Confidence: medium.

Updated in cbbd62d. Nonempty object/array values under secret-named parameters now produce an unchecked-content notice while preserving their opaque structure. Empty containers, booleans and null stay clean. The regression also checks that the audit-log projection removes the complete sensitive value.

Reviewed approval can be bypassed through the main relay token. reviewed is looked up only for grant tokens. The main token is in rustgis-mcp-<user>/{port}.token, which is readable by the same user. An agent under grant_reviewed can read that file, attach with the main token (rustgis-cli mcp --attach), and skip the queue. That contradicts the comment on grant_reviewed (line 779), which says the queue is never bypassed. Impact depends on whether a reviewed agent can already run the CLI directly, which would make this moot; either way the stated guarantee does not hold here. Confidence: medium.

Updated in cbbd62d. The main relay token already represents the documented same-user authority convention: enabling attached-agent control grants its holder file/network access. Run grants restrict messages authenticated with that grant; they cannot confine another process running as the same OS user. The grant and local-agent docs now state this boundary explicitly. No token-file inspection or OS-isolation claim is involved.

Possible panic on hostile params (AGENTS: no panics, use get()). wanted[&wire.key] = … uses serde_json IndexMut, which panics when wanted is not an object or null. wanted is cloned from the frozen node's params. This is only reachable if a wired node has non-object params, which I could not rule out (confidence: low). The same pattern appears at line 528 (original["ran"] = …). A checked form such as as_object_mut() returning an Err would avoid it.

Updated in cbbd62d. The wired tool path normalizes parameters through the pinned schema before this assignment: ResolvedTool::resolve_params calls params_for, which always returns Value::Object. Model wiring also normalizes parameters, and legacy wiring is constructed only inside as_object_mut. A scalar/array cannot reach this IndexMut as wanted. The full hostile-parameter tests pass; I have kept the established normalization rather than adding an unreachable branch.

Password tail leaks into the public label. userinfo_end (lines 46-51) returns the first @ inside the authority, so for postgresql://user:p@ss/word@host/db the "public" part comes out as postgresql://user@ss/word@host/db. The fragment ss/word is part of the password and is kept. durable.rs stores this label as Kept::Changed, so it reaches saved projects and peer text. Direction: when the authority contains @, also consider the last @ before the query and use it when it comes later. Confidence: high on the mechanism, medium on how often an unencoded password reaches it.

Updated in cbbd62d. The public-label formatter now withholds an ambiguous URI when userinfo is followed by a raw @ in its path; the typed output consumer counts that loss. The runtime connection parser is unchanged, so this cannot guess a different host. The existing URI regression covers the reported malformed tail, encoded @ and query @ controls.

Validated on that commit: full native CI, focused regressions and the strict wasm build pass.

Code review

I read the new policy core (decide.rs, dispatch.rs), the redaction and address code, peer.rs, the browser request layer, and the parts of durable, relay, auth and credential code that three focused reviewers covered. I checked the five strongest findings against the code before posting. The diff is about 27k lines, so this review is not exhaustive (see "Not reviewed" below).

Bugs

  • Recovery copy drops credentials silently (crates/engine/src/project.rs:941, medium-high confidence): recovery_text discards the removal report, so autosave strips tokens and keys without telling the user. This violates the "Never silent" rule.
  • Password tail kept in the public Postgres label (crates/data/src/source/pgconn.rs:17, high confidence on the mechanism): postgresql://user:p@ss/word@host/db produces postgresql://user@ss/word@host/db. That label is saved, so part of the password is stored.
  • Possible panic on hostile params (crates/engine/src/policy/dispatch.rs:366, and :528, low confidence): serde_json IndexMut panics on non-object values, against the no-panic rule.

Security

  • Secret-named object or array values kept verbatim (crates/engine/src/roles.rs:153, medium confidence): _ => None keeps the value and emits no notice, so a saved step can keep a credential.
  • Reviewed approval bypassed via the main relay token (crates/assistant/src/relay.rs:827, medium confidence): the main token is in a same-user file, and reviewed applies only to grant tokens. The stated guarantee is that the queue is never bypassed. Real impact depends on whether a reviewed agent can already run the CLI directly.
  • Permits matched by JSON-RPC id string (crates/assistant/src/relay.rs:948, crates/assistant/src/mcp.rs:175, low confidence): a batch with a repeated id can make a permit land on the wrong call. The effect is an approved call failing, not a bypass.
  • Browser fetch error text not scrubbed for ArcGIS token requests (apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs, low confidence): the authenticated flag ignores the query token, so error text skips scrubbing.

Performance

  • Exchange::record and Exchange::retain in crates/engine/src/peer.rs do linear scans per slot, which is quadratic in the entry count. It is bounded by MAX_ENTRIES (4096), so the cost is small. Not worth a change now.

Quality and AGENTS.md

  • The new refusal() messages in decide.rs are English format! strings. Engine error strings are not translated anywhere else either, so this matches current practice. Not raised.
  • The Session::run re-raise (lib.rs:1292) may conflict with the AGENTS.md "catch escaped panics" wording, but I could not confirm it is new in this PR, so I left it out.
  • Quality points are left for the release quality pass.

Earlier concerns: none (no prior review threads on this PR).

Not reviewed in depth: the bulk of apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs, most of crates/tiles/src/cache.rs (the staged diff is truncated), logins.rs, durable.rs beyond public_address, the ui-egui and plugins changes, and most of the mechanical command-annotation churn (I spot-checked the effect labels on file, network and reserved commands and found them consistent).

Bind queued downloads to their issuing session and precise account choices.
Keep account changes reserved and bind tile sources consumed by exports.
Report recovery and video credential losses, preserve opaque parameters with
an unchecked notice, and scrub adjacent addresses in generated output.

Integrate current main's background map and layout exports while retaining
admission, live cancellation, account checks and completion ownership.

text = self._session.project_json()

Peer-export notices repeat on every command. _push runs after each Map.run, and _peer_text() reports the same removals and unchecked-content notices for an unchanged project. _hold only appends, so a project with one tokenized layer gets the same "address removed" notice again after every command, and notices() returns all the copies. Suggested direction: keep the last pushed notice set and hold only the notices that are new since the previous push (or only when text changes). Confidence: medium.

Fixed in 57d5d11. The widget remembers its last outgoing project and bridge notice list, so unchanged internal pushes do not append another copy. A new report is still shown when sanitized JSON is unchanged, and changed outgoing content reports its losses again. The layer-key count path keeps its existing behavior. The extended widget test passes with current Python sources and the existing native wheel; the wheel was not rebuilt for this check.

One run's cancellation fails other runs sharing ready. tools() caches a single promise. If run A's still() turns false during the import, the shared promise rejects with A's "cancelled" error, and any concurrent run B that is still wanted awaits the same rejected promise and fails with a cancellation message that is not its own. Each run is spawned independently, so two runs can overlap. Suggested direction: have each caller await the shared load, then check its own still() after the await, rather than letting one caller's cancellation reject the shared promise. Confidence: medium; depends on the engine admitting two GeoLibre jobs at once.

Fixed in 57d5d11. Module import and initialization now have separate shared promises, while every caller checks its own live request before loading, after import and before running. A cancelled waiter cannot reject a healthy waiter or a manifest load; no initialization starts when all waiters were revoked. The exact production JavaScript passes eleven held-import scenarios, including both retry paths. This uses a synthetic module, not a browser/WASM runtime. Ordinary tool-pane runs are currently serialized; shared loader clients are the confirmed case.

Code review

Scope: this PR is about 27k diff lines across 162 files. I read the policy core (policy/decide.rs, peer.rs, the roles.rs credential scrubber, the pgconn.rs URI handling), the Python bridge, and the web GeoLibre and request adapters. I did not read the rest in depth, so treat this as a partial review. I left the 23 earlier review threads alone. I checked several of them against the code and did not re-verify the rest.

Bugs

  • Repeated peer notices on every command (apps/rustgis-python/python/rustgis/_embed.py:206, medium). _push runs after each Map.run, and _peer_text() reports the same removal notices for an unchanged project. _hold only appends, so the same notice accumulates on every command. Posted inline.
  • Cancellation poisons the shared GeoLibre load (apps/rustgis-web/src/geolibre.rs:25, medium). tools() caches one promise. If one run is cancelled mid-import, the rejection reaches every concurrent run that awaits it. Posted inline. Confidence depends on whether two GeoLibre jobs can overlap.

Security

  • No new findings beyond the earlier threads. Those threads are still open and unchanged: the main relay token bypassing reviewed approval (relay.rs), and secret-named object/array values kept verbatim with only an unchecked notice (roles.rs).

Performance

  • Nothing notable found in the parts I read.

Quality

  • policy/decide.rs:109: a /// doc comment on a nested fn item reads as a doc for the enclosing arm. Low priority.
  • AGENTS.md (added line): "deferred D12" refers to a label contributors cannot look up in the repo. Quality point for the release quality pass.

AGENTS.md

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic in the production code I read. The hits I found are in test modules. Also no new direct indexing in address.rs, durable.rs, policy/*, peer.rs, or roles.rs.

Earlier threads I checked

  • downloads.rs: now compares Arc::ptr_eq on the request authority. Appears addressed.
  • scope.rs:208: the same_run method is now cfg-gated for non-wasm. Appears addressed.
  • peer.rs: video slots are now counted in slots(). Appears addressed.
  • pgconn.rs: a userinfo @ in both authority and path now returns None. Appears addressed.
  • roles.rs:162: non-empty object/array values now set unchecked, so they get a notice. Bool values are still kept verbatim without a notice. Minor.
  • dispatch.rs:372 and :534: the IndexMut panic risk is unchanged. Still open.

The batch is pushed in cbbd62d; the inline findings have separate responses. Two further summary points are also handled: approval matching now uses the request's batch position rather than a possibly duplicated RPC id, preserving the wire id, and browser GET authentication-error handling includes signed storage requests and URL-token authentication as well as service logins. The reviewed-grant regression covers duplicated RPC ids. Native orchestration tests and the strict wasm build pass; this does not claim real web-sys execution in a browser.

Full native CI: 4,231 passed, zero failed, 21 ignored. All 48 focused regressions and all-file hooks passed.

The review batch is implemented in cbbd62d, with all 18 inline findings now marked addressed by the reviewer. Twelve regression scenarios failed before the fixes; the final focused batch passes all 48 tests. Full native CI passes 4,231 tests with zero failures (21 ignored), and the locked wasm build with warnings as errors and all-file hooks pass. Current main's background map/layout exports are integrated while retaining initiating ownership, exact result attribution and cancellation checks. The PR is conflict-free.

The short-password point is handled by preserving full matching and documenting its output-masking limit, with an active/clean/revoked regression. Changed command registrations and the new helper contracts are documented; no check configuration or suppression changed.

Carry the Still context with queued tile jobs.

Queued tile jobs store only (Want, Capture, &'static [u16]). Capture::enter restores the request owner but not the Still context. launch runs each popped job under capture.enter() only, and the loop can run on any thread that calls launch. A queued job therefore runs under the Still of the thread that runs the loop, or under none.

The checks added to the byte-fetch path can then read the wrong context. A fetch for an initiator whose context was revoked can proceed. Its login can then be applied to that request.

Store the captured Still in the job and restore it around fetch_tile. with_optional_still combines the supplied context with the thread's current context, so the launching thread's context also applies to the job.

Deduplicate streamed-layer address losses in the durable report.

Layer::output_slots can emit the same streamed address as both dataset provenance and streamed-source slots. Prepare::string counts each changed slot and does not deduplicate by layer. A credential removal from one streamed layer can therefore increase report.addresses twice.

Suggested fix

Deduplicate the durable address-loss count by layer, or change the documented contract if each affected slot should count separately.

crates/engine/src/policy/dispatch.rs:324-338
Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Quick win

Compute the cursor-only snapshots lazily in admit and with_node.

admit runs for every command that goes through authorize. It always builds current_sources, selected, layers and tables. Each current_sources entry calls private_source for every layer in every map. The code uses these values only when self.policy.cursor is Some, or when expected is Some, which also needs a cursor.

with_node always builds before_layers and before_tables. It reads them only in the if let Some(cursor) block after the call.

Without an approval cursor, which is the usual direct-command case, this work grows with the project's layer count on every dispatch. It has no effect on the result.

Build these vectors only when a cursor exists. The example below does this for current_sources. Apply the same guard to the other snapshots.

Proposed change for `current_sources`

- let current_sources = self
- .project
- .maps
-            .iter()
-            .flat_map(|m| m.layers.iter().map(move |l| (LayerKey::of(m, l), super::plan::private_source(l))))
-            .collect::<Vec<_>>();
+        let has_cursor = self.policy.cursor.is_some();
+        let current_sources = if has_cursor {
+ self.project
+ .maps

Both new bugs are handled in 57d5d11; details are in the inline replies. The earlier relay-token and opaque-parameter boundaries are answered in the existing threads. Bool/null values contain no credential payload. The two indexed assignments consume internal normalized state: tool resolution always returns an object, and raster continuations can only be created after a successful starter requiring object fields. Public JSON cannot manufacture those opaque continuations. No reachable hostile-input panic was demonstrated. The nested-comment wording and internal D12 label are left for the release quality pass.

Bug: raster.measure requires layer at planning time, but its handler treats it as optional. The command is registered with .inputs(raster_inputs), and raster_inputs calls raster_name(p)?, which errors with "layer is required" when layer is absent. The handler (measure, line 1474) reads layer with ps(p, "layer").map(...).transpose()?, and the params doc marks it "layer"?. In strict planning (policy/plan.rs:808-810) that binder error is returned as Err, so a layerless distance or area measurement inside task.run, a notebook or a script fails the whole plan whenever the run is not auto-allowed. Direct calls are unaffected because the command is Effects::NONE. Suggested fix: bind only when the optional layer is present, for example a dedicated binder:

/// Binds the optional measured raster, so a layerless distance or area measure needs no layer.
fn measure_inputs(input: &super::InputContext<'_>, p: &Value) -> Result<super::Inputs, String> {
    super::Inputs::named(input.map(), ps(p, "layer"))
}

This assumes Inputs::named accepts an iterator of names, as the chain(spectral_zone(p)) call site suggests. Confidence: high on the mismatch, medium-high on impact. Not in prior threads.

Fixed in 62f5d22. The measurement callback now accepts the handler’s optional raster selector. Direct, script and task cases pass; an explicitly selected raster remains bound and its removal still invalidates approval.

Silent loss: a source pair is dropped with no notice when its option name already exists in the destination or earlier in the same source. The present.contains branch sets withheld only when some names are new. When every name is already present, the pair is skipped with no count. Two reachable cases (both SAFE_OPTIONS, so they pass when full or safe holds): a source …?subset=Lat(10:20)&subset=Long(30:40), where the second subset is dropped because the first was inserted into present, so the inherited URL keeps a wider subset; and a source collections=roads against a destination already holding collections=z, where the source's choice vanishes. Per AGENTS.md "Never silent", a skipped source pair should set withheld (or raise its own count), except for an identical duplicate. Confidence: medium-high. I did not run the address tests against this.

Fixed in 62f5d22. A skipped non-identical raw query pair now marks the address as lossy while preserving destination priority. Existing tests cover repeated source keys, encoded names, legacy pairs and clean identical duplicates. The adjacent refused-Next path also publishes its accumulated loss count once.

Formatting: item_content is not rustfmt-formatted (match kind{, and arms like "task"=>self… without spaces). cargo xtask ci runs the fmt check, so this fails the gate. Run cargo fmt on this file. Judged by reading the file, not by running rustfmt. Confidence: high.

The exact 22526e0 tree had already passed cargo fmt --check, so the claimed gate failure did not reproduce. I rewrote the dense match for readability in 62f5d22; formatting and full CI pass.

Bug: effects for a layer renamed earlier in the same script are computed from the pre-rename name. This loop calls layer_by_name(name) on live state, and the planner's symbol table (symbols, populated at line 658 for layer.rename) is not consulted. Example: layer B is a streamed remote layer; a script runs layer.rename {"layer":"B","name":"Z"} and then gp.run {"tool":"buffer","params":{"input":"Z"}}. layer_by_name("Z") returns None, so the node gets Edits without Network. The review card then omits the network reach, and an Agent with Refuse/Review access can get a fast-path Allowed. Dispatch should still refuse later, but only after the rename has already run, so the script is partly applied. Suggested direction: resolve each name through self.symbols (as bind does at line 770) before the layer_by_name lookup, and apply the same change to the effects::command call near line 621. Confidence: medium. Not in prior threads.

Fixed in 62f5d22. Target binding and source effects now share the map-qualified planned alias, in fast preflight and strict review, with the executor’s full-source predicate. Regressions cover renamed streamed inputs for both a tool and layer.loadAll, plus renamed stretch, mask and elevation inputs and ambiguous destinations. The original runtime denial and rollback controls also pass; no unauthorized read or persistent partial rename was demonstrated.

Possible silent loss: the template clears streamed-source references with no count. l.source, l.postgis and l.gpkg (and the table t.source at line 621) are cleared here. The notices only cover label moves, offline areas and archived edits, so a layer streamed from a URL, GeoParquet or a database loses its reload reference in the template and nothing says so. The template's "keeps no features" behaviour appears intentional, but the reference is data a reader could need to reattach the layer, and AGENTS.md requires a notice for a dropped reference. Suggested direction: count the cleared sources in TemplateLosses and report them with the other omissions. Confidence: low-medium, since the intent may be to drop them. Not in prior threads.

Fixed in 62f5d22. Template serialization counts each cleared owning source reference and emits one notice after serialization. The existing streamed/table case checks three references and the editable-package case two; both retain live-source state and clean templates stay quiet. Actual before/after frames are in the PR body.

Code review

Coverage caveat: pr-context/diff.patch was truncated at 1.5 MB of its 2.0 MB, so the tail of crates/engine/src/tests.rs and the files under crates/engine/src/tests/ were not reviewed. Six reviewers covered the rest of the diff by reading it, and I did not compile or run tests. I verified the inline findings below by reading the code. The inline comments were posted to the PR.

Bugs

  • raster.measure rejects a layerless measure in strict planning. The binder requires layer, but the handler treats it as optional, so a layerless measure inside task.run fails the plan. Confidence: high on the mismatch, medium-high on impact. Inline on imagery.rs:76.
  • Effects for a layer renamed earlier in the same script use the pre-rename name. plan.rs looks up streamed inputs by live name and skips the symbol table, so network reach can be omitted from the review card. Dispatch still refuses later, after the rename has run. Confidence: medium. Inline on plan.rs:703.
  • take_gp_files checks the map instance, but finish_export checks only the origin. A browser export made on map A is dropped with a notice if the user switches maps before delivery. The notice is raised once per file, not once per kind. Confidence: low-medium. Not posted inline.
  • Possible panic in dispatch.rs:620. Already covered by a prior thread, and the author's reply addresses reachability. I left it alone.

Security

  • Stale trust record after a rename. trust_after adds the new name but never removes the old record, so an identical task created later under the old name can inherit trust. Requires identical steps, so impact is low. Confidence: medium. Not posted inline.
  • project.connections stats folder paths with Effects::NONE. This reveals whether connected folders exist without a declared Files effect. Confidence: low. Not posted inline.

Silent loss (AGENTS.md "Never silent")

  • Duplicate source pairs are dropped without a notice. When a pair's option name already exists in the destination or earlier in the source, it is skipped with no count. This affects subset and collections. Confidence: medium-high. Inline on address.rs:503.
  • Template export clears streamed-source references without a count. l.source, l.postgis, l.gpkg and t.source are cleared silently. Confidence: low-medium, since the intent may be to drop them. Inline on items.rs:603.
  • Generated notebook output is scrubbed without a notice. Already covered by a prior thread, and the author's reply cites the deliberate generated-output rule. I left it alone.

Quality

  • provenance.rs is not rustfmt-formatted. cargo xtask ci would fail its fmt gate. Confidence: high, judged by reading. Inline on provenance.rs:19.
  • Dead let _ = leftovers remain in items.rs:255, workflows.rs:509 and workflows.rs:673. These can wait for the release quality pass.
  • roles.rs:119 passes "" as the id in tool(), so command role metadata never applies to tool parameters. Low impact.
  • share.rs:51 and exports.rs:253 perform owner checks after a write or before a completion-refusal wrap. Both look like spec-conformance gaps rather than live bugs.

Performance

  • dispatch.rs:410 (admit) builds source, layer and table identities for every admission, including ordinary commands. lib.rs:1482 and lib.rs:1504 clone trust sets and url_waits on every guarded call. Costs scale with project size.
  • peer.rs O(slots × entries) lookups. Already covered by a prior thread, and the author deferred it.

AGENTS.md

  • The provenance.rs formatting issue is noted under Quality above.
  • Prior threads cover the address.rs fragment and scrub decisions, the lib.rs process-wide cache, and the arcgis.rs and plugin_fetch.rs points, which the author resolved. I did not re-raise them.

Prior-review concerns left alone: about 20 open or resolved threads that the code still matches, plus the deferred release-quality-pass items.

Code review

Scope: I reviewed a sample of this 170-file, roughly 22k-line PR, not the whole diff. I read the AGENTS.md copy, the PR metadata, the stats, and all the prior review threads. I read the first ~400 diff lines in full, plus the parallel row-worker change, the new apps/rustgis-web/src/request.rs, and the Python widget's push and hold logic. I grepped every added line for unwrap/expect/panic!/unsafe and for unlocalized UI label literals. The unwrap hits I inspected were in test code, but I did not confirm the test-module context for every hit. Other changed areas (policy/dispatch.rs, durable.rs, address.rs, relay.rs, geolibre.rs) were covered only through the existing threads, not re-read.

Bugs: No new defect verified. The parallel row-worker, request.rs handoff, and the Python push/hold logic all read as correct on this pass. Confidence: medium, given the sample.

Security: No new issue found. The credential, approval and cancellation surfaces are already covered by earlier threads, and I did not re-derive them. Confidence: medium.

Performance: Nothing new. The per-push _peer_text() cost and the linear scans in peer.rs were already raised.

Quality: One low-confidence observation. _from_app (apps/rustgis-python/python/rustgis/_embed.py, finally block) now holds every pending session notice after a peer import, where it previously discarded them. The new comment says this is intended, but it is worth confirming that no ordinary "Opened …" style notices now reach the widget. Confidence: low.

AGENTS.md: No new violation found. The new UI-facing literals I grepped for were all wrapped, and the unwrap/panic grep found nothing outside test code. The new AGENTS.md and SECURITY.md text matches the code changes it describes.

Earlier concerns: I left alone every concern already raised in prior-reviews.json. That is roughly 70 threads, which I did not tally exactly. I posted no inline comments, because I had no new finding I could verify.

Addressed the verified findings and their adjacent forms in 62f5d22. Full CI, strict wasm and all-file hooks pass on that commit.

  • Fixed optional measurement planning, renamed streamed reach, secondary/future targets, duplicate-query loss reporting, template source counts and folder availability’s Files effect.
  • Native queued file delivery now uses the same snapshot-owner rule as exports. Restricted callers retain exact checks. Two retired exports produce one counted notice with bounded redacted names.
  • The reported stale model-name record did not reproduce: model.save already retires it, and a recreation/Undo control passes. The related search found a real ignored-rename issue that could trust another task; the hook now records the actual edited item.
  • Removed the dead provenance leftovers, clarified the separate tool-role contract, cleaned up the dense match and indexed both peer loops. The original formatting-gate claim did not reproduce.
  • Post-write owner checks still block the finalizer and report a file already committed. The source/account identity checks and rollback snapshots remain part of the exact-operation contract; the report identifies scaling but supplies no measured regression requiring a different authority scheme.

The callback-coverage limit is stated in its original thread. This review’s truncated test tail had already been covered by the complete local review; this batch also reviewed the affected owner and adjacent caller paths.

For the newer widget observation: _from_app intentionally retains previously unread notices once. _open_peer_text calls the peer-import path rather than the user-facing open command, so it does not generate an ordinary “Opened …” notice. The existing clean-import control asserts an empty notice list; containment and connection warnings remain visible. No fresh Python-wheel execution is claimed here.

Use ASCII normalization for planned rename symbols.

The executor's layer-name lookup is ASCII-case-insensitive, but planned rename symbols use Unicode to_lowercase(). For example, a prior rename to K causes a later rename to K to be rejected even though Map::layer_by_name treats those names as distinct.

The outside-diff ASCII normalization mismatch is fixed in feb1a741, together with the two inline findings. Planned rename symbols and all output/table/dataset lookup keys now use the executor’s ASCII matching. K and K remain distinct, ASCII k still selects K, and a Unicode-distinct nonexistent future output refuses before execution. The actual two-rename case failed on the prior production code. The finite affected-path Standards and Spec reviews found no logic or scope issues; full CI, strict wasm and hooks pass on the published tree.

Code review

I found no new findings I could verify. This is a partial review: the diff is about 26k lines across 175 files, and I did not read all of it.

Checked and clean

  • apps/rustgis-python/python/rustgis/_embed.py and apps/rustgis-python/src/lib.rs: the bridge push and receive paths. The new _push notice dedup and the _from_app hold logic behave as intended.
  • apps/rustgis-web/src/request.rs, plus its use in arcgis.rs and geolibre.rs: the still-check handoff and the final send check.
  • crates/engine/src/policy/decide.rs, handler.rs and mod.rs: the permission table and the handler boundary.
  • crates/data/src/address.rs: the percent and \u decoding (decode_pass, decoded_name, name_class). Index slicing is bounded, and hex cannot overflow.
  • AGENTS.md panic patterns: a grep of added lines for unwrap, expect, panic!, unsafe and [&k] = showed only test code in its first 120 hits. I did not check the rest of the hits.

Not reviewed in depth: policy/plan.rs, policy/dispatch.rs (beyond the existing thread), durable.rs, peer.rs, relay.rs, analysis, most engine/src/cmd/* changes, and ui-egui.

Prior threads: I left all 71 existing review threads alone and did not re-raise any of them. I did not re-verify their resolution status against the code. The replies cite fix commits (62f5d22, cbbd62d, a0197cc, 57d5d11) that I did not confirm are in this checkout.

Suggested follow-up: a subsystem-by-subsystem pass over policy/plan.rs, policy/dispatch.rs, durable.rs and peer.rs, which carry most of the new authority logic.

Run Still checks outside the cache mutexes.

If a Still predicate re-enters info_ready during the second check, it can deadlock on pending and block other metadata requests. remember_info has the same risk with the metadata cache mutex.

Move the predicate calls outside these mutexes while preserving the epoch and revocation checks.

Check download capacity before native deferred imports.

When leave_downloads is set, an import can fill the request queue and skip the remaining remote layers. The importer removes each failed layer’s placeholder, but returns a partial map.

Keep credentials out of the add_cog result.

When a dated GeoTIFF is added with deferred downloads, a pending read can put the raw URL in warning. The dated url field also contains the raw address, so redacting the warning alone is not enough. The result can expose a query token or runtime login binding to the caller.

Add a regression test with a keyed dated URL that checks both fields.

Code review

I found no new defects in the parts I read, and I'm posting no inline comments. This PR is very large (175 files, about 22.7k lines added), so this is a partial review, not a full one. I checked:

  • Repository rules: I scanned the added lines for unwrap, expect, panic!, unreachable!, todo!, unsafe, eprintln! and direct indexing. The hits I could see were in test modules, or were the indexing sites already raised in earlier threads.
  • Browser request handoff: apps/rustgis-web/src/request.rs and its use in arcgis.rs and geolibre.rs. The cancellation checks before and after the awaits look correct to me.
  • Python bridge: apps/rustgis-python/src/lib.rs and _embed.py.
  • Earlier threads: I went through the existing review threads in prior-reviews.json (71 total, 32 unresolved). I did not re-raise any of them.

I did not read the policy engine, the address and durable-save logic, or most of the engine command changes in full, so this review does not clear them.

Disclosed in the PR's own AGENTS.md change and not raised here: authority for ui.* RUN messages from embedding pages is an open boundary.

Earlier concerns left alone because they were already raised: 71 threads, none re-raised.

Fixed in ca78800.

  • MBTiles predicates run outside both locks; epoch validation and insertion remain atomic with clear.
  • Failed admission consumes the next-command merge key in both registered and plugin branches.
  • Deferred-import capacity is checked before map creation on native and browser paths. Admission shares the loader’s source classification and counts live taken requests; native MBTiles and browser streaming TIFFs keep their existing routes.
  • Dated tile/COG, service-default and pending-result URLs are sanitized. Metadata reads and opaque download parameters retain their exact private address.

Seven engine cases and two MBTiles cases failed before correction and pass in final full CI. The complete run, strict wasm build and publication hooks pass. Existing UI fixtures now exhaust capacity after admission, preserving their actual app-frame startup-failure cleanup and unrelated-owner assertions.

Keep foreign fallback templates anonymous.

A WMTS capabilities document can provide a foreign tile template without a tilesets list. The fallback then uses crossed_origin = false. The source login is not forwarded, but the outer login hook can bind a saved login for the foreign origin.

Track the fallback template’s origin before adding the tile. Keep foreign templates anonymous through later logins. Add a regression test for a foreign WMTS ResourceURL.

Mark refused model exports as failed.

If delivery authority is revoked before take_gp_files runs, it drops the PendingFile. The model node remains pending, and gp.fileDelivered cannot update it because the entry is gone. Update the matching model report when retiring the file, without recording a successful delivery.

A registered handler can drain a refused file, queue another file, and then fail. The length-based rollback can retain the new file, which the UI may deliver after the failure.

Track the pre-existing file IDs instead. On failure, remove new files without restoring refused files or already-delivered bytes.

Code review

No new high-confidence defects found in the parts reviewed. This is a partial review: the diff is about 26k lines across 116 files, and I did not read all of it.

What I checked

  • AGENTS.md and SECURITY.md changes, the Python bridge (_embed.py, lib.rs, test_widget.py), the browser request.rs handoff and its tests, analysis/src/control.rs progress and revocation, the external-tool registry in analysis/src/lib.rs, engine/src/peer.rs (slot census and retention), and the group/layout input builders.
  • Mechanical scans of added lines for unwrap/expect/panic!/unsafe/println!, lock handling, and direct indexing. Production hits were none, or confined to tests, which clippy.toml allows.
  • Production call sites of analysis::resolve (the discovery-triggering variant) are tests only. Engine code uses resolve_published, so provider loading is not reachable from the policy path.

Bugs

  • None new with confidence above low.

Security

  • None new. The concerns in the existing threads on credential removal, address-role coverage, and the process-wide restore cache are still open and are not repeated here.

Performance

  • None noted.

Quality

  • crates/analysis/src/lib.rs:1268-1273 (low confidence): when a reload bumps the generation during a provider load, external_tools_of returns an empty slice and drops the schemas the provider just produced, with no notice. This matches the comment's intent, but AGENTS.md's "never silent" rule would expect a count or a log line. Consider a log::info! or a notice on that path.
  • AGENTS.md (the new "Command ingress" bullet, lines 9-13) records an open authority gap for ui.* RUN messages from embedding pages. That is useful for maintainers, but the contributor guide is a poor place to track an open security boundary. Consider moving it to SECURITY.md or an issue, and linking from here (confidence: medium, a style judgement).

AGENTS.md compliance

  • The changed Rust I sampled follows the no-panic and get() conventions, and the test-only unwrap calls are allowed by clippy.toml. I did not run cargo xtask ci or check the wasm32 build, so those gates are unverified here.

Prior review threads

  • 72 threads are already on this PR. I did not repost any of them, since I found no new code that changes their status. Several were answered by the author in a way I did not re-examine, so they remain open for the maintainers to confirm.

Not posted

  • No inline comments were posted, because nothing I found met the bar for an inline finding.

@coderabbitai resume

0c192f1 handles the remaining lifecycle/service batch:

  • Foreign fallback templates retain sticky origin provenance for WMS, WMTS and style creation, including failure paths.
  • Retiring a refused model file marks its matching report as failed.
  • Failed handlers retain only surviving original pending-file identities. Drained files and consumed URL requests cannot be resurrected by rollback.
  • The approval regression independently checks the session log for the credential.

The related cases reproduced before correction; the combined focused controls and full workspace CI, strict browser build and hooks pass. The PR now targets #1521 and contains only the execution-policy layer. Credential/output review continues separately on #1521; the stack is not ready to merge yet. Please resume incremental review of the current head.

Learning: Within repository "opengeos/RustGIS": When reviewing pull requests in opengeos/RustGIS, treat automated review findings as advisory rather than mandatory merge requirements. Prioritize real bugs. If a contributor gives a reasoned explanation for declining a minor or low-value suggestion, acknowledge that decision without insisting on the change. Leave merge requirements to the maintainers.

Include tile access in offscreen render policy.

When a visible remote tile is uncached, snapshot and view_map can fetch it with Effects::NONE. An agent denied network access can therefore trigger the fetch.

Plan the rendered tile sources and their effects before admission, and bind their routes to the approval. Preserve offline rendering without network approval.

Update policy_call’s snapshot and view_map handling so tile sources and their
required effects are planned before policy admission, and bind the approved
routes to the render request so uncached remote tiles cannot be fetched outside
approval. Keep offline rendering available without requiring network approval;
use the existing planning and approval mechanisms rather than assuming new APIs.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Settle the wait when a download claim is retired.

download_started can retire a plugin’s claim while fewer than 64 claims exist. The retirement does not settle its wait. If the download is still in progress, the plugin can wait until the download returns or REQUEST_WAIT expires.

Report the retirement and settle the matching plugin wait when download_started retires a claim.

Update download_started so retiring a claim reports the retirement and settles
the matching plugin wait immediately, including when fewer than 64 claims exist;
preserve the existing claim-retirement behavior and identify the wait by the
retired claim’s plugin.
