GATE: FAIL on one blocking defect: a new CSS rule breaks the v2 type floor and v2-type-floors.test.ts fails, which is gated by CI's Frontend tests. Everything else in the four scope areas holds, including the trust property the feature rests on, and the remaining findings are non-blocking.
Blocking — .v2-msg__author-kind is mono below the 11px floor
v2.css:3120 declares font: 700 10px/16px var(--v2-font-mono). The floor guard fails:
● v2 type floors (ruling h) › no rule sizes below the floors outside the burn-down allowlist
+ ".v2-msg__author-kind — mono at 10px is below the 11px floor"
A full sweep of src/v2/__tests__ + src/i18n is 1 failed / 1243 passed across 108 suites — this is the only objection in the whole frontend, so it is one edit away from green. CI's Frontend tests job was still queued at this head when I measured, so it will land red there too; that prediction is falsifiable on the next run rather than something you have to take from me.
The allowlist is not the escape hatch, by its own contract: "Entries are removed, never added: a new violation fails the first assertion, and a fixed one fails the second." And I think I can name where the 10px came from — the badge immediately before yours in the same header, .v2-msg__lead-badge, is in that allowlist at exactly // 10.0px — mono-below-floor. Copying the neighbour's size imported a violation the neighbour is grandfathered for. 11px mono clears it; a non-mono family at ≥12px also clears it.
The V1 badge is not part of this: .kernel-author-badge at 9px sits beside .bot-badge, which is also 9px, and no guard reads ChatRoom.css. Consistent with its own surface, and out of the floor's scope.
The trust property holds, which is the part I pressed hardest
"Server-set, never model-set" is the claim the whole marker depends on, so I went looking for a path from a request body to authorKind:
- the only two setters in the tree are literal —
routes/registry/install.ts:989andservices/stalledConnectService.ts:299.git grep authorKindoutside the model/service/script/test files returns nothing else; - both agent-runtime post routes destructure explicitly rather than spreading —
const { content, metadata, messageType } = req.bodyandconst { content, metadata, messageType, replyToMessageId, threadRootId } = req.body— so an agent holding a runtime token cannot smuggle the field in; - the human path never passes it: PG gets 8 positional args and the 9th defaults to
null, Mongo gets an object literal without the key and the schema default isnull; - the UI keys on
author_kindalone, not onmetadata.kind. That matters becausemetadataIS caller-supplied, so if the badge had been keyed onmetadata.kind === 'install-intro'the marker would have been forgeable by any agent. It isn't.
The Mongo schema's enum: ['kernel', null] is the backstop if a future caller does pass something.
The other three scope areas
Persisted marker. The PG retrofit is right, and right in the way this file has been wrong before: ALTER TABLE messages ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS author_kind VARCHAR(20) sits in the retrofit section, not only in the CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS, which the surrounding comment correctly notes is a no-op on an existing table. Fresh and existing instances both get the column.
The positional renumbering in pg/Message.create is consistent: 8 columns, 8 select expressions, $6 in both the reply-edge derivation and its pod-match guard, $8 in the COALESCE and its own guard, and the stale $7 in the comment was updated to $8. Mongo and PG both carry the value out, and the Mongo branch now spreads an explicit author_kind onto the normalized message rather than relying on the document shape.
Backfill. Dry run is the default (options.apply !== true), --apply is required, and idempotency is doubly held: the pre-filter drops rows already kernel, and both writes carry their own guard (author_kind IS DISTINCT FROM 'kernel', authorKind: { $ne: 'kernel' }). Wrong-row risk is low because nudgeMessageId is written from the id of the nudge the service just posted, so the reference cannot point at a human message.
Mutations. Four of five bite:
| mutation | result |
|---|---|
| install intro stops marking kernel | 3 red |
| stalled-connect nudge stops marking kernel | 1 red |
| backfill loses its pre-filter | 1 red (applies only unmarked rows and is idempotent by source-row state) |
frontend drops the author_kind === 'kernel' condition |
1 red |
drop author_kind from either PG SELECT projection |
22 passed |
61/61 across the seven touched backend suites. eslint on the seven changed backend files: 0 errors (24 max-len warnings, pre-existing lines). tsc -p tsconfig.build.json: 0 errors. Base is 0 commits behind main (which now carries #2478 as 205dfe0a7), trial merge clean, one commit authored by Lily Shen so the squash title is the commit subject.
Four non-blocking findings
- Neither PG read projection is covered. Removing
m.author_kindfrom the projection atpg/Message.ts:226or the one at:268leaves all 22 tests green. That is the exact failure the file's own comment was written about — "MUST be selected. Late columns are easy to miss in an explicit projection" — and the symptom would be the badge appearing on the live socket broadcast and then silently vanishing on reload, because the controller prefers the joined row. The write path and the render are both pinned; the read-back is the one hop that isn't. - The aria-label is hardcoded English on both surfaces.
aria-label="Commonly system message"inV2MessageRow.tsx:640andChatRoom.tsx, while the sibling badge one line later usest('podChat.leadBadge'). The visible "Commonly" is a brand mark and I would leave it untranslated; the aria text is a sentence, and a zh-CN screen-reader user hears English next to a localized badge. - Two dead CSS fallbacks that disagree with their tokens.
var(--v2-accent-soft, #e8ecfb)andvar(--v2-accent-text, #4353b8)— both tokens exist (v2.css:56-57) and every sibling rule uses the barevar(), so the fallbacks never fire. They also carry different values from the tokens they shadow (#e9edfband#1d3fd1), so if the tokens were ever renamed the badge would render in two colours nobody picked. - Backfill scope is narrower than the feature. It keys only on
StalledConnectEpisode.nudgeMessageId, so historical install intros stay unmarked — reasonable, since the PG messages table has no metadata column to locate them by, and a Mongo-only backfill would badge one era and not the other. AlsonudgeMessageIdis a single field written with$set(stalledConnectService.ts:301), so if an episode ever nudges more than once only the latest nudge is reachable. Both are under-marks rather than mis-marks, which is the safe direction for a trust badge.
This FAIL dies with the head — push the floor fix and I will re-gate the new SHA.

Otto, gate measured at 377fa970b3ba819d4e405d1485abd123076a945c — not fb9d87423. The head moved after the re-gate ask; fb9d87423 is an ancestor, and the extra commit (377fa970b, "align message thread placeholder assertion") is part of what I measured.
This supersedes my FAIL review 5626556921, which is now void — it was pinned to 9cce51237ba5edb2b88c8252dbc3dc3b29738381, a dead SHA. GATE: FAIL again, on a different and more serious defect than the one I held for. The type-floor fix and the projection assertions are both good; a one-line change made in the first commit breaks the Mongo fallback path.
Blocking — spreading a Mongoose document drops every schema field
agentMessageService.ts:1817 (the Mongo fallback branch of _postToTarget):
message = {
...(mongoMessage as unknown as MessageNormalized),
author_kind: authorKind,
};mongoMessage is a Mongoose document, not a plain object. Its schema fields live in _doc behind prototype getters, so a spread copies the internals and none of the data. Demonstrated with no database, on this head's own mongoose:
doc.content = "Hello from Clawdbot"
{...doc}.content = undefined
{...doc} own keys = $__,_doc,author_kind
{...doc.toObject()}.content = "Hello from Clawdbot"
Three own keys: two Mongoose internals and the one field this PR adds. Before the change the branch was message = mongoMessage as MessageNormalized — the document itself, whose getters work.
CI agrees, and it is this PR. Backend tests (3/3) is completed/failure at this head (job 120351922708) with six failures, all in agent-posting paths:
clawdbot-e2e.test.js—should post a message to pod via runtime API:expect(res.body.message.content).toContain('Hello from Clawdbot')→ "Received has value: undefined";- the same suite's
NO_REPLYleakage cell →contentundefined; two-way-integration-e2e.test.js— four more, every one apost … to podcase.
Backend tests (3/3) is success on both 205dfe0a7 and bd2f10e63 (current main and its parent), so this is not a standing red. The failing assertion, the mechanism above, and the only line that touches that return value all agree.
Blast radius beyond the tests: the same message object feeds the newMessage socket broadcast and the installable bridge dispatch a few lines down, both of which read (message as MessageNormalized).content. On the Mongo path those would emit undefined content to every connected client and to any Telegram/Slack relay. The PG path is unaffected, so this only bites when the PG availability fallback is in use — which is exactly when nobody is watching.
...mongoMessage.toObject() fixes it (verified in the probe above). Attaching the field to the document after populate and leaving the cast alone would also work and would keep the one shape the surrounding code already expects.
My own miss, since it is in the review I am superseding
My FAIL named one blocker. There were three, and I found only the one. At 9cce51237 I ran the seven suites the PR touches — the writer's glob — and that missed:
__tests__/unit/models/threadRootDerivation.test.js, which pins the INSERT's placeholder numbering and was already failing at that head (expect(insert).toMatch(/WHERE parent\.id = \$5/)against a renumbered$6). I re-ran it at9cce51237to confirm rather than infer: 1 failed / 7 passed. It is fixed here by377fa970b;- the service-tier E2E suites under
__tests__/service/, which is where the Mongo-fallback defect above lives.
My own note says to run a wider glob than the writer's and I ran exactly theirs for the backend. The frontend claim I made was sound because I did sweep all 108 suites there; the backend claim was narrow and I should have said so.
What the delta fixed, verified
- Type floor.
font: 700 11px/16px var(--v2-font-mono)clears the 11px mono floor. The fullsrc/v2/__tests__+src/i18nsweep is 108 suites / 1244 tests, all passing — the single objection from my FAIL is gone and nothing else appeared. - Both PG read projections are now pinned, one assertion each: removing
m.author_kindfrom thefindByPodIdprojection redsfindByPodId formats returned rows, and removing it from thefindByIdprojection redsfindById returns formatted message. That is the right shape — one cell per projection, so a single assertion cannot stand in for both. My first non-blocking finding is closed. - The dead CSS fallbacks are gone. 67 suites / 585 tests green across
__tests__/unit/{models,controllers}.
One note for the render gate rather than for you: the badge background changed token, var(--v2-accent-soft, #e8ecfb) → var(--v2-surface-hover), which is a real visual change and not just a fallback removal. I measured the contrast since it is objective: #f2f4f7 on #1d3fd1 is 7.10:1, up from 6.70:1, so small-text AA (4.5:1) is comfortably met and this is not a defect — it just wants a human eye on the colour choice.
Still open from my FAIL, both non-blocking
aria-label="Commonly system message"is still hardcoded English at three sites (V2MessageRow.tsx:640,ChatRoom.tsx:4625and:4709), one line from a sibling that usest('podChat.leadBadge'). The visible "Commonly" is a brand mark and fine untranslated; the aria sentence is prose.- The backfill still keys only on
StalledConnectEpisode.nudgeMessageId, so historical install intros stay unmarked, and a twice-nudged episode only exposes its latest nudge. Both under-mark rather than mis-mark.
State at this head
CI is not zero-pending: 15 success, 2 skipped, 1 neutral (CodeQL), 1 failure (Backend tests (3/3)), and 2 still in progress (Service Tests (Tier 1 — real DBs), Analyze (javascript-typescript)). Service Tests is the other real-DB tier and worth watching — it exercises the same posting paths.
Base is 0 commits behind main. Three commits now, so the squash title comes from the PR title. All three authored by Lily Shen.
This FAIL dies with the head — push the toObject() fix and I will re-gate the new SHA, and this time I will run the service tier too.

This supersedes my FAIL review 5626680085 at dead head 377fa970b3ba819d4e405d1485abd123076a945c. The Mongo serialization defect in that review is fixed at this head; review 5626556921 at 9cce51237 was already superseded.
The repaired Mongo fallback calls toObject() after population, then overlays author_kind. Its test supplies a Mongoose-shaped document whose schema fields are in _doc, and checks that the socket broadcast retains both content and the kernel marker. The plain-object fallback preserves test doubles. The new grouping predicate separates kernel and agent rows in both orders, so the Commonly badge gets its own header. PostgreSQL read projections, schema retrofit, trusted literal setters, and dry-run/idempotent backfill remain intact. My focused runs passed 45/45 backend and 21/21 frontend tests; exact-head CI is all complete and successful, including Test & Coverage, Service Tests, and E2E. Non-blocking residuals from the earlier review remain: the aria-label is English prose, and historical install intros or older repeated nudges are outside the backfill's reference set.
Blocking merge defect: this head is now DIRTY/CONFLICTING against current main c67628c72. I reproduced the conflict with git merge --no-commit origin/main: frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2MessageRow.test.tsx contains this PR's Commonly marker test at the same insertion point as #2503's URL tests. The other touched files auto-merge. A disposable resolution retaining both sets passed the merged message-row, real-markdown, grouping, and type-floor suites, 34/34. The green stale-base check belongs to the earlier base and does not establish current mergeability. No functional defect in the feature was found, but this exact head cannot be pressed. Rebase, keep both test sets, rerun CI, and request a gate at the new full SHA. This FAIL dies with the head.

This supersedes my FAIL review 5628129660 at dead head c680d0d1c6feca7f37338ed3a48fcfbf7f70e59b. Its merge conflict is resolved; the earlier FAIL reviews at 377fa970b and 9cce51237 were already superseded.
The new head is based on current main c67628c72. git range-diff shows five feature commits patch-equivalent to the previous head; the first differs only in where the Commonly marker test lands among main's URL tests. I checked V2MessageRow.test.tsx: both the URL cases and the kernel marker case are present. Mongo toObject() serialization, plain-object fallback, PG projections, trusted marker setters, dry-run backfill, and both directions of the grouping boundary remain. The prior feature and merge defects are closed.
Local verification: six affected backend suites, 45/45 tests; four frontend suites covering the message row, real Markdown, grouping, and layout invariants, 250/250 tests. git diff --check is clean. Exact-head CI has zero pending or failing checks: 20 successful, 2 skipped; required Test & Coverage, Service Tests, E2E, backend and frontend jobs all succeeded. GitHub reports MERGEABLE/CLEAN.
Non-blocking defects retained from the earlier review: the accessible Commonly system message label is English prose on zh-CN, and the historical backfill reaches stalled-connect episode references but not old install intros or superseded nudges. Neither mislabels an ordinary agent post. This PASS dies with the head.
