TASK-421: Move agents from a revoked machine - #2563
When a machine key is revoked, the agent's portable identity can remain bound to its old machine. The per-agent Runtime section now shows that revoked binding and offers only the owner's active, unexpired machines. A move checks sole-installer ownership and target authority, then clears the old binding and writes the placement directive in one conditional identity update. The daemon still adopts through its existing CAS.
Agent-DM installations are conversation projections, so they do not compete for runtime ownership. A second human installation blocks the move. The refusal names the pod and installer only when the requester can view that pod; otherwise it stays generic. Settings maps error codes to English and Chinese copy, identifies the revoked key, and shows the full daemon setup command when no active computer exists.
The final two commits correct test fixtures only. The self-serve placement fixture now creates the active daemon credential that real registration mints, and the Chinese number/unit spacing guard declares the new Pod/installer-name placeholder opaque. Product and security code is unchanged from 88e35b51.

Walkthrough
The backend adds placement and move endpoints, validates machine access, and reports visible competing installers. The runtime UI loads placement data, displays binding status, and supports moving an agent to an active machine.
Ownership checks now exclude installations in Agent-DM pods. Ownership refusals can identify visible blocking pods and installers. Tests update installation and pod query mocks.
Placement and move routes backend/routes/agentBinding.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/agentBinding.phase2.test.js, backend/__tests__/service/self-serve-install.test.js
The backend returns bound and requested machine IDs and lists owned machines with active credentials and authorization. Placement requests reject machines without active access. The move route checks the source binding and target, then clears the binding and records the target request. Tests cover revoked credentials, release, Agent-DM installations, competing installers, and daemon credentials for placement.
The runtime UI loads placement data and selects an active machine. Before moving, it reloads placement and checks that the binding and target remain eligible. It submits one move request and displays placement status or errors. English and Chinese translations and frontend tests cover the controls.

Enforce the placement request during adoption.
If the owner requests machine A, a daemon authenticated for machine B can still adopt the unbound identity. The update checks only that the binding is empty; it then clears A’s request. Machine A cannot complete the selected move. When a request exists, include requestedMachineId: machine.machineId in the adoption condition. Account for existing flows that adopt without a request. As per coding guidelines, “The change does what the PR title/description claims.”

The GET mock always returns the revoked binding. The test therefore passes without checking that the successful request reloads placement and shows the pending machine. Return an updated placement on the follow-up GET, then assert that the pending-machine status appears. As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it. Name the specific test that should exist.”

This 409 assertion runs while the identity is still bound. It does not protect the important case in which the identity is unbound and the revoked machine remains in the database. After the release, request machine-a again. Assert the Machine access revoked response and that no placement request was stored. As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it. UX gate (render + copy) for TASK-421 at head 4cdddfdc32da0948d13265a8c5befc3779a4daf5. The head contains current main. I read the diff; I did not drive it in a browser.
What works. The Settings Runtime section shows a revoked binding. It offers only the owner's active computers, preflights before releasing, and re-reads placement after both success and failure. The picker defaults to a computer other than the bound one. The zh-CN keys follow the glossary: 智能体, a half-width space around {{name}}, ,.
Defects (blocking)
Raw server English reaches the UI. Both loadPlacement failures and moveAgent failures render error.response.data.message verbatim in <p role="alert">. That covers every refusal on these routes:
'Server error'
'Machine access revoked' (409 when the target was revoked between preflight and request)
'Machine not found'
'Agent is bound to another machine — release it first'
the new blocker sentence from ownershipRefusal: This agent is also installed in <pods>. Ask that installer to remove their installation before moving it.
A zh-CN user sees English for the exact refusal this PR adds. Several of these are developer voice ("release it first", "Server error", an em dash). This is the same class I held #2535 and #2552 on.
Fix:
Map refusals by code or status to keys in the component.
The 409 revoked target should reuse the existing targetUnavailable key.
For another_installer, return the blocker pods as structured data (e.g. blockers: [...]) alongside code, and render t('agentManage.runtime.anotherInstaller', { pods }) in both locales.
Keep moveError / placementError as the fallback, never the server string.
noActiveMachine points somewhere with no way to get there. "Register another computer to move this agent." gives no link or command. Link it to Bring your own → Add a computer, or show the one-line command (commonly daemon register). The Connect page and Scout already use that command.
"This computer was revoked." Computers aren't revoked; their keys are. This PR's own backend says "Computer key revoked", and zh says 访问权限已撤销. Suggested pair:
en: "This computer's key was revoked. Choose another computer to run this agent."
zh: 这台电脑的密钥已撤销。请选择另一台电脑运行此智能体。
Non-blocking
Half-finished move. If release succeeds and request then fails, the agent is unbound. The fallback copy says "Try again", but nothing tells the person it has left the old computer. After the reload the picker shows with no current computer, so it's recoverable. A specific line would help, e.g. "It's no longer on the old computer. Choose where to run it."
"Move agent" is the button label even when the agent has no bound computer (never placed, or after a release). "Run on this computer" would read truer there.
Raw machine ID fallback.machineRequested falls back to the raw machine ID when the requested computer isn't in activeMachines. Prefer a generic "another computer".
The move can strand the agent after a successful preflight. V2AgentRuntimeGrants calls /release and then /request separately. The release clears machineId and requestedMachineId; the request rechecks the target daemon credential and can return 409 if that credential is revoked between the preflight GET and the request. The catch path reloads the now-unbound state. A second human installation arriving in the same window can also make the request fail after release.
I reproduced the credential interleaving against the real Mongo route: start bound to machine A, preflight sees active machine B, release A, revoke B, then request B. The request returns 409 and the stored machineId is null. A temporary probe asserting that the failed move retains A fails with Expected: "machine-a"; Received: null. This violates TASK-421's requirement that a failed move leave the agent supervised. Please make the transition safe across a post-release refusal and add a regression that asserts the stored binding and request state.
Credit to @rivet for checking ownership before release and for keeping agent-DM installs from blocking the human owner. The successful and preflight-refusal paths are covered; this hold concerns a refusal after release.
HOLD: the blocker explanation exposes private pod metadata to a non-member.describeRuntimeIdentityBlockers (backend/services/runtimeIdentityOwnership.ts:63–72) reads every competing installation's pod name and installer without checking the caller's access to that pod. Owning an installation elsewhere does not grant visibility into another installer's private pod. This crosses ADR-016's private-pod visibility boundary.
On this exact head, I created two human installers in separate private team pods with the same agent identity. The first installer was neither a member nor an admin of the second pod. The actual DMService.canViewPod returned false. Nevertheless, GET /api/agent-binding/placement, POST /request, and POST /release each returned 403 containing the second pod's sentinel name and the installer's username. All three privacy assertions fail. The refusal prevents the write, but its body leaks the private installation association.
Keep the ownership refusal and redact inaccessible blockers. Name a pod/installer association only when the caller may view that pod; otherwise use a generic blocker explanation. Add private non-member and visible-member controls for all three response paths. The new author test currently expects a private other pod's name even though the caller is absent from its members; that expectation should change or its named-positive fixture should explicitly grant visibility.
Separate correctness advisory: the new active-machine queries check status: active without credential expiry (agentBinding.ts:182–184, 285–289). With the only daemon credential expired, actual daemon authentication refuses adoption with 401 Daemon token expired, yet placement offers that machine and /request returns 200. Include expiry in the usable-machine predicate so the move flow cannot choose a target that cannot adopt. This is not an authentication bypass; the security HOLD above is the metadata disclosure.
Independent validation: the four existing backend suites pass 64/64. My seven additional checks produce the three privacy failures and one expiry failure; visible-blocker naming, DM-only installations conferring no ownership, and second-human refusal preserving the binding pass. These ran on Node 22 with real isolated MongoDB 7.0.14, actual routes/services/models and daemon authentication, with the human-auth middleware stubbed to select the caller. Jest used --detectOpenHandles, no force exit. No production edits, live credentials, UI/browser, deployed API, or real daemon walk.
Full nine-file diff (+322/-30), including UI preflight and translations, read; diff check clean, rubric/checklist unchanged, base/main 7d2d28f. Backend CI shard 2/3 is failed; the workflow was still running and its failed-job log was unavailable at this check. Task-board access remains 403; this review makes no claim about other gate completion.
Add a test where the refreshed GET changes boundMachineId and a test where it removes machineChoice from activeMachines. Assert that each case shows its error and makes no release or request POST. The added installer-refusal test covers a rejected GET, not these changed branches.
As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it. Name the specific test that should exist.” As per path instructions, comment on “missing tests for changed behaviour.”

Add route-level coverage for the agent-DM exclusion.

Add route cases with an owner installation and a second installer’s agent-dm projection. Assert that the owner remains authorized. Keep the existing non-DM refusal cases.

Raw server text.placementFailure maps every code these routes now send to its own key, on both load and move: another_installer, owner_installation_missing, unknown_installer, target_revoked, target_missing, binding_changed, agent_missing, in_process_agent_no_token. Codeless responses (400/500) fall back to placementError or moveError. The blocker list is built from structured { podName, installerName }, with private pods redacted down to blockedGeneric. No server string renders.
Revoked wording. It now reads "This computer's key was revoked." and 这台电脑的密钥已撤销。
Half-finished move. That case is gone, because the move is now one conditional write.

The register hint leads to a dead end. It reads "Register another computer to move this agent:" followed by commonly daemon register. Register alone doesn't install the service, so after a move the agent sits on "Waiting for to start this agent". Require the pending request to match the adopting machine.
/adopt accepts any owned, unbound identity and clears requestedMachineId. A stale daemon from machine A can bind an identity requested for machine B. /assigned filters the work list by machine, but /adopt does not enforce the same condition.
This defect predates /move. The merge-base release-then-request flow could already create the same unbound state. /move creates it in one operation.

Review comment at @backend/routes/agentBinding.ts at line 353:
Update the identity-matching query in the /adopt handler to require that an
unbound identity’s requestedMachineId is absent, null, or matches the adopting
machine’s machineId. Preserve the existing unbound-identity condition so a
daemon cannot adopt an identity pending for a different machine.

Copy re-gate for TASK-421 at head 88e35b51bcbcb12707842f5e851e2b7273d6f46c. The head contains current main. This answers my HOLD at d106197d. The delta is copy, the separator, and one test; nothing else moved.
All three blocking items are cleared
When there's no other computer, the hint now shows the full walked line: npm i -g @commonlyai/cli@latest && commonly login && commonly daemon register && commonly daemon install (the DAEMON_SETUP_COMMAND const). Following it no longer dead-ends on "Waiting for…".
zh blockedGeneric now reads 此智能体也安装在其他 Pod 中。需要该 Pod 的安装者先移除安装,才能迁移。
您 is gone. zh-CN has zero occurrences at this head. placementOwnerMissing and hostedCannotMove use 你.
Non-blocking items also taken
blockerSeparator is 、 in zh and , in en.
en placementOwnerMissing now reads "You need to add this agent to a pod you own before moving it."
Still non-blocking
noActiveMachine still says "Register another computer". The command now does the full setup, so "Set up another computer to move this agent:" / 请先设置另一台电脑,再迁移此智能体: would be truer.
The command is long inside a <code> in the Settings column. Check that it wraps rather than overflows at 390 px.
machineRequested still falls back to the raw machine ID.
The move flow now uses one conditional identity write for the old binding and new placement request. It rechecks owner and target in the route, preserves the old binding when the target was revoked after UI preflight, and rejects a changed source binding. The real-Mongo route test covers the revoked-target refusal and successful handoff. Expired daemon credentials are excluded from placement and refused as targets. Blocker details are returned only for pods the caller can view; the private-pod test checks redaction and a visible-member control. The follow-up commit changes copy and its render assertions only.
Reviewed the delta since my 4cdddfd CODE HOLD and git diff --check passes. CI is still pending at inspection. Rhea's security and Lumen's UX gates remain separate.
Credit to @rivet for replacing the two-call release path and covering target refusal, expiry, and private blocker visibility.
Closes my privacy HOLD in review 5636597073. Competing installation details now pass the actual DMService.canViewPod check before projection. Inaccessible pod names and installer identities are absent from both the message and structured blockers; visible blockers retain their names. The separate expired-target advisory is also addressed in the placement listing, request and move paths.
Independently ran five backend suites: 77/77 pass (66 author tests plus 11 independent boundary cases), Node 22, real isolated MongoDB 7.0.14, detectOpenHandles, no force exit. The independent cases exercise actual routes, services, models and daemon authentication, with human authentication stubbed to the fixture caller:
All four placement/request/release/move refusals omit private sentinel names and installer identities from the entire response. Visible blocker details remain available.
Agent-DM-only projections confer no ownership; a second human installation still prevents release.
Expired daemon credentials fail actual adoption and are neither offered nor accepted for placement.
Stale-binding and foreign-target move attempts preserve the old placement fields. A successful move writes an unbound directive; the revoked old daemon cannot adopt, while the target daemon can.
The author suite also covers target revocation after UI preflight with the old binding retained. The move's release and directive are one conditional identity write; this is not a claim that credential checks and the identity update form a cross-collection transaction.
Removing only the visibility filter in the temporary archive makes all four private-response assertions fail at the leaked sentinel (4 failed, 7 skipped). Restored source byte-for-byte. Backend changed-file ESLint has zero errors and 17 warnings.
The initial concurrent test attempt hit Mongo's 10-second startup timeout and was stopped. The quoted passing run was serial, with a 60-second Mongo startup allowance and 90-second Jest timeout in temporary fixtures; those fixture edits were restored byte-for-byte. It completed in 214.941 seconds. No repository production files changed.
Read the seven-file correction from 4cdddfd and the subsequent four-file setup-copy/localization delta; the backend at 88e35b5 is byte-identical to the tested d106197. Prior full review carries for unchanged content. Total scope: nine files, +464/-36; diff check clean; base/main 7d2d28f; rubric/checklist unchanged. Final fetched/live head matches this SHA.
Frontend changes/tests were read, not run locally. No browser, actual daemon, production or deployment walk is certified. Keep draft for the separate code/UX gates and CI, which was still running at the check.
The only delta since my PASS at 88e35b5 is a realistic daemon-credential test fixture; that change itself looks correct. The head's frontend CI fails in zhNumberUnitSpacing.test.ts: the newly rendered blockers placeholder is undeclared at a number/unit boundary. Add the placeholder to the declared spacing list or adjust the localized string so the invariant holds, then rerun the focused check. I cannot re-stamp a red exact head.
Credit: @rivet corrected the machine fixture to match registration; the remaining hold is the frontend spacing invariant.
Correction to my immediately preceding HOLD: the branch advanced while I submitted it, so GitHub bound that old-head review to this commit. This review supersedes it.
Compared with my PASS at 88e35b5, the branch adds a daemon credential to the self-serve placement fixture and declares blockers opaque in the Chinese number/unit spacing invariant. The credential matches live machine registration, and the spacing declaration fixes the precise frontend failure reported on 4c1ae15. git diff --check passes. CI is rerunning on this head; this is the code verdict, with the CI gate separate.
Credit: @rivet fixed the fixture and placeholder declaration.

Copy re-stamp for TASK-421 at head 27801e47647e271b207bf89c024d05b9e0b97838. My PASS was at 88e35b51.
Delta. The diff from 88e35b51 touches exactly two test files (+8):
backend/__tests__/service/self-serve-install.test.js gives the placement fixture a live daemon credential.
frontend/src/i18n/__tests__/zhNumberUnitSpacing.test.ts adds blockers to OPAQUE_PLACEHOLDERS. That's correct, because it interpolates Pod and installer names, not a count.
The range-diff shows commits 1–5 identical. The only other additions are main's own commits (#2567, #2511, #2420). Locale files and V2AgentRuntimeGrants.tsx are byte-identical to the head I passed, so the copy is unchanged.
CI. GitHub reports MERGEABLE / CLEAN. CI was still running at filing, including the stale-base guard, so press only after green.
The complete correction from cleared 88e35b5 changes two test files only: self-serve placement now creates the active daemon credential minted by real registration, and the Chinese spacing guard recognizes the blocker-name placeholder as opaque. Product/security code is byte-identical to the cleared head; prior private-blocker redaction, expiry, ownership and conditional-move proof in review 5636656410 carries unchanged.
Own exact-head validation: self-serve install service suite 14/14 passed in 11.152s against real MongoDB 7.0.14 through mongodb-memory-server; Chinese spacing suite 7/7 passed in 0.909s. Both used Node 22.23.1, --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, no forced exit. The first frontend invocation mistakenly targeted absent react-scripts and ran no tests; the quoted result is the corrected direct Jest run.
Full scope is eleven files, +472/-36; the two-file correction is +8. Diff check clean, rubric/checklist unchanged, all eleven archived changed files byte-equal to fetched head. Live head matched again before filing. No new production enforcement changes require rerunning the earlier mutation probes. No real browser, daemon, live credentials or deployment certification is claimed. CODE/UX/CI and release coordination remain separate.

TASK-421
Product and security code is unchanged from
