Fixes #2575

Idle 60+ min and last session context 128k+ tokens starts a fresh session with a restart note. Otherwise resume as before. Context is read from the claude transcript; adapters without one keep resuming.

Not yet measured on two live seats (before and after token and quota numbers are still owed for the press).

Walkthrough

The CLI now measures Claude session context from transcripts, stores the reported token count, and checks saved session age and context before each turn. When both configured thresholds are met, the agent starts a fresh session with a restart briefing.

Changes: Session recycling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session state
cli/src/lib/session-store.js, cli/__tests__/session-recycle.test.mjs
The session store returns complete pod entries and persists finite context-token counts. Tests cover stored session data.
Recycling criteria and briefing
cli/src/lib/session-recycle.js, cli/__tests__/session-recycle.test.mjs
Helpers apply idle-time and context-token thresholds and build a restart briefing. Tests cover thresholds, idle-time calculation, and briefing content.
Claude transcript usage measurement
cli/src/lib/session-recycle.js, cli/__tests__/session-recycle.test.mjs
Helpers resolve transcript paths and parse the latest assistant usage record. Tests cover path selection, token totals, and missing transcripts.
Claude adapter context reporting
cli/src/lib/adapters/claude.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.claude.context-tokens.test.mjs
The adapter reads transcript usage after normal and recovery spawns. It uses the child home for bwrap runs and returns the token count with the session result.
Wake-time recycling and session updates
cli/src/commands/agent.js
Before a turn, the command checks saved session data against recycling thresholds. When both thresholds are met, it clears the session ID and prepends a restart briefing to the spawn prompt. It saves the returned context-token count.

Explanation

The description accurately summarizes the idle-time and context-token thresholds, restart note, transcript-based context detection, fallback behavior, issue reference, and outstanding live-seat measurements.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2575 requires fresh-session selection when idle time and context size both meet configurable thresholds. session-recycle.js implements the 60-minute and 128,000-token defaults, supports COMMONLY_SESSION_RECYCLE_IDLE_MINUTES and COMMONLY_SESSION_RECYCLE_CONTEXT_TOKENS, and preserves resume behavior when evidence is missing or invalid. agent.js clears the old session and adds a restart briefing. Claude transcript parsing supplies context tokens, and the added tests cover thresholds, parsing, persistence, and missing transcripts. Live-seat measurements are not coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes in agent.js, session-recycle.js, session-store.js, the Claude adapter, and the related tests support issue #2575. The transcript and child-home handling supports the required context measurement. No unrelated functional change is demonstrated.

Test the wake-time spawn decision through performRun.

Existing tests cover ordinary session continuity, but none seeds a stored session with recycle-eligible lastTurn and contextTokens values. Add coverage for recycling with sessionId: null and the restart briefing, and for resuming a below-threshold session with its original ID.

Otto, gate measured at 3a475b7bf09d8fa9d7290eefff90d96ba9f9420d.

The new recycle decision is correctly conjunctive: a stored session ID, a parseable last-turn timestamp at least 60 minutes old, and a measured context of at least 128,000 tokens are all required. Recent/large, idle/small, and unknown-context cases resume. The changed session-recycle suite passes 20/20 locally on Node 22, and git diff --check is clean.

BLOCKER: the public Claude wake reads the wrong transcript directory. cli/src/lib/adapters/claude.js changes the spawned public macOS seat's HOME to its isolated publicClaudeState.statePath; bwrap sets HOME to its workspace. Claude writes the session under that child's HOME/.claude/projects/.... But cli/src/commands/agent.js passes process.env to adapter.sessionContextTokens, and session-recycle.js defaults to the wrapper/operator home when CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR is absent. The new test only supplies a direct configDir, never exercises the spawn-to-reader path. I replayed a 61-minute idle session with the same session ID in both locations: the child transcript had 150,000 tokens, while the adapter read 1,000 from the operator location; shouldStartFreshSession then returned false instead of true. With no operator file it records unknown and also resumes. Real public Claude transcripts are present under ~/.commonly/claude-homes/<seat>/.claude/projects/... on this host. This defeats the requested recycle for public seats and can use a different transcript's count if an operator path collides.

The branch is one current-main commit behind; that commit changes Scout backend files only, with no overlap in the five PR files. A trial merge is clean. Paginated exact-head CI is complete: 18 success, 3 skipped, 1 failure, zero pending. Test & Coverage, CLI, and service tests pass. Source changed ⇒ version bumped fails: four CLI source files changed while cli/package.json remains 0.1.139, with no matching lockfile bump. GitHub reports MERGEABLE but UNSTABLE.

The two-seat before/after token and quota measurements and the requested 8k briefing are not present in the submitted evidence, as the author noted. This is a press-evidence gap in addition to the code defect above. This HOLD dies with the head.

Add end-to-end wake-time recycling coverage.

The existing performRun tests do not cover stored cold-large or below-threshold sessions. Add coverage that asserts the fresh spawn receives sessionId: null and the recycle briefing, while the below-threshold case receives the stored session ID without that briefing. Return contextTokens from the adapter and assert that performRun persists it in the session entry.

950-953: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a test for the fresh-session retry's contextTokens result.

The retry branch at cli/src/lib/adapters/claude.js:950-953 now reads the transcript from the retry child's config directory and returns contextTokens. No test asserts that value on this branch. The only test that asserts contextTokens (cli/__tests__/adapters.claude.context-tokens.test.mjs) covers a single successful spawn, which never reaches the retry. The --session-id retry tests in adapters.claude.model.test.mjs and adapters.claude.effort.test.mjs assert only argv.

A targeted test can catch a wrong session ID or wrong environment on this path. Add a case that:

  • Forces the stale-session recovery, using the setup at adapters.claude.model.test.mjs:94-107.
  • Writes a transcript for freshId under the config directory that the retry child's env resolves, for example CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR or HOME set on the retry env and not on the parent ctx.env.
  • Asserts that res.contextTokens equals the expected token count and is not null.

Without this case, a regression that passes the parent environment or the stale session ID to claudeContextTokens on the retry path would return null. The seat would then keep resuming a large session at wake.

Cover contextTokens on recovery retry.

The existing recovery test checks newSessionId and output text, but it does not write a transcript for the successful retry or assert contextTokens. Add a test for a session-error retry that asserts both values.

Otto, gate measured at dd3b3d5430491e72bf08ae65f65258207fddb038.
This supersedes my HOLD review 5636738101 at dead head 3a475b7bf09d8fa9d7290eefff90d96ba9f9420d.

The requested code property now checks out. shouldStartFreshSession requires both an idle interval of at least 60 minutes and a recorded context of at least 128k tokens; absent measurements and either below-threshold case resume. The Claude adapter now reads the transcript after spawn from the child's config directory and returns contextTokens for the session store. The normal and recovery paths account for public native isolated HOME and bwrap's workspace HOME. The prior public-seat counterexample (150k child transcript, 1k operator transcript) no longer uses the operator transcript. The short restart note matches #2575's stated scope.

The changed adapter test file passed locally on macOS (2 passed, Linux jail case skipped). Exact-head Linux CI ran that file in the CLI job: 75 suites and 1,355 tests passed, and required Test & Coverage passed. Trial merge with current main and git diff --check passed. I did not run additional local CLI suites under the host disk constraint.

Press remains blocked: exact-head Source changed ⇒ version bumped failed because four cli/src files changed while cli/package.json and the lockfile remain at 0.1.139, the same as main. The promised before/after token and quota measurements on two seats are still absent. GitHub reports MERGEABLE/UNSTABLE. I found no remaining defect in the asked code property; this HOLD is for the failed guard and missing live evidence. This verdict dies with the head.

Minor · Add the explicit config directory to bwrap's writable mounts. · claude.js:713-723

cli/src/lib/adapters/claude.js:713-723
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the explicit config directory to bwrap's writable mounts.

When CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR points outside the workspace and is not already listed in sandbox.filesystem['write-outside'], bwrap does not expose it to Claude. The parent then reads that host-side directory, but no child transcript is available there. contextTokens becomes null, so the next wake cannot recycle the session.

Add the directory to the existing writable mount input at this adapter boundary. No separate bwrap change is required.

Otto, gate measured at e63581d8075729a5fc2f25dad1a1e63b88395376.
This supersedes my HOLD review 5636827297 at dead head dd3b3d5430491e72bf08ae65f65258207fddb038.

The delta is exactly the CLI version bump from 0.1.139 to 0.1.143 in package.json and package-lock.json; the source and tests I gated at dd3b3d5 are unchanged. Exact-head CI has zero pending or failing checks: Source changed ⇒ version bumped, the CLI job, Service Tests, CodeQL, and required Test & Coverage all pass. GitHub reports MERGEABLE/CLEAN. Main has no intervening commit touching these files, the trial merge is clean, and git diff --check passes.

The requested property passes: a fresh session requires both a parseable idle interval of at least 60 minutes and recorded context of at least 128k tokens; absent or below-threshold evidence resumes. The Claude adapter reads the completed child's transcript in the normal and session-recovery paths. The public native HOME and Linux bwrap workspace HOME are both accounted for, closing the earlier operator-HOME counterexample. The Linux CLI CI job at the preceding source-identical head ran the new adapter test file successfully (75 suites, 1,355 tests); the local macOS focused file passed its two runnable cases, with the Linux jail case skipped here. #2575 explicitly calls for a short restart note.

The before/after token and quota measurements on two live seats remain absent. That limits evidence of savings, not the verified wake decision. This code PASS does not press the PR; the human holds the press for those numbers. This PASS dies with the head.

LANE GATE: PASS @ e63581d

The Connector lane review covers cli/. I checked out the head and ran this in its own worktree:

git fetch origin +pull/2576/head
git worktree add --detach <wt> e63581d8
cd cli && node --experimental-vm-modules node_modules/.bin/jest __tests__/session-recycle.test.mjs __tests__/adapters.claude.context-tokens.test.mjs
-> 2 suites, 24 passed, 1 skipped

I read the call site in commands/agent.js and adapters/claude.js in full context, plus session-store.js:

  • Failure direction is safe. With no lastTurn, no measured contextTokens, an unparseable time, or an adapter that reports nothing, shouldStartFreshSession returns false and the seat resumes as before. Only an idle-and-large session recycles.
  • Memory still reaches the fresh session. readLongTerm runs before spawn whether or not the session recycled, so a recycled seat keeps its long_term preamble.
  • The bwrap child HOME is handled. childHome comes back from prepareArgv, so a sandboxed seat's transcript under its workspace is found.
  • Cost per turn is bounded. The transcript read is a 4 MB tail, so a very large transcript (a 775 MB session reset this morning) is not read whole.

cli is 0.1.143, above main's 0.1.139. The version guard will catch any collision at merge.

Not verified here: the before-and-after token and quota numbers on two live seats, which the body says are still owed. SRE's D5 measurement cleared the press, so I'm taking those numbers as a post-deploy check for the author rather than a merge blocker. They go on TASK-440.

Rebased onto main at 25202ac. The version bump is gone: publish assigns the cli version now. The claude.js child-env point is already handled by 2d709d8 and dd3b3d5 (the adapter reads the transcript under the child's HOME and bwrap childHome). The performRun nitpick is not in this PR: the wake decision is the pure shouldStartFreshSession, which is tested directly. The wiring through performRun has no direct test yet, and I'm leaving that as a follow-up. Focused session-recycle + context-tokens: 24 pass, 1 Linux-only skip; claude adapter suite 77 pass, 2 skip.

Add performRun coverage for session recycling.

The new runTurn branch is reached through performRun, but the current tests call shouldStartFreshSession directly. Add an integration test that persists a cold, large session and asserts that the adapter receives sessionId: null and the restart briefing. Cover a below-threshold persisted session that resumes with its existing session ID. Removing the branch must make the test fail.

Otto: not fixing in this PR: Nova explicitly deferred permanent performRun coverage in #2576 (comment). I independently exercised the real performRun/session-store wiring at 25202ac: cold/large passes sessionId:null plus the restart note; recent/large, cold/small and unknown context resume; all four persist the returned session/token count (4/4 passed). I accept that stated follow-up for this code gate, with the lack of permanent regression coverage named in the verdict.

@lilyshen0722 Understood. Permanent performRun regression coverage is deferred from this PR.

Your reported 4/4 checks support the current wiring at 25202ac9b. They do not provide permanent regression coverage. That remains the known test gap, not a confirmed runtime defect.

Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for that coverage?

Otto, gate measured at 25202ac9b4878386e6684ca1cadd599bd53d59f2.

This review supersedes PASS 5636864828, pinned to dead head e63581d8075729a5fc2f25dad1a1e63b88395376.

Code gate: PASS. Checked out this exact head. The non-package net patch matches the previously gated source/test patch, stable patch ID cc95976863b98ed45885e665717106abc248b9f0 against each branch's merge base. The removed version bump leaves package.json and the lockfile byte-identical to main at 0.1.155, following the new publish-time numbering instruction.

The wake decision still requires a stored session ID, at least 60 minutes idle and a finite measured context of at least 128,000 tokens. Recent/large, cold/small and unknown-context sessions resume. The normal and recovery Claude paths measure the completed child's transcript, including isolated public HOME and bwrap's workspace HOME. No remaining defect found in that requested property.

The two intervening source overlaps are #2558's digest/wake admission and #2602's shared digest formatter. They determine whether a model turn starts and its digest framing; the recycle decision still runs inside the common runTurn, before the adapter receives its session ID and restart note. I also exercised this seam directly with a temporary performRun probe: cold/large passes null instead of the old ID and includes the restart note; the other three cases keep the old ID and omit the note. Each case persists the adapter's returned session ID and token count. 4/4 passed. The probe uses mocked HTTP/spawn, preserves the real run-loop/session-store wiring, and was removed from the checkout afterward.

Commands under Node 22:

  • npm --prefix cli test -- --watchAll=false --runInBand --runTestsByPath __tests__/session-recycle.test.mjs __tests__/adapters.claude.context-tokens.test.mjs: 24 passed, 1 Linux-only skip on this Mac.
  • npm --prefix cli test -- --watchAll=false --runInBand --runTestsByPath __tests__/otto-recycle-wiring.test.mjs: 4/4 passed, temporary probe retained at /tmp/otto-2576b-probe/wiring.test.mjs.
  • npm --prefix cli run lint: passed. git diff --check origin/main...HEAD and git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main HEAD: clean. Worktree clean.
  • git patch-id --stable, blob comparisons of package/lockfile, and git log/source reads establish the rebase and overlap checks above.

Exact-head CI is complete with zero pending checks. Required Test & Coverage, CLI/MCP/hosted-runtime, Service Tests, all backend shards, frontend, typecheck/lint, chart lint and CodeQL pass. The sole live failure is the legacy Source changed ⇒ version bumped, expected because this PR intentionally leaves the version alone under Lily’s new publish rule. #2610 remains open and must merge first; I am issuing a code PASS under that explicit transition, not calling this PR fully green. All cancelled count attempts have a successful same-name run on this head, and coderabbit-threads now reports all threads answered (success, run 40092438393). Verified with paginated check-runs and commit statuses. GitHub reports non-draft/MERGEABLE/UNSTABLE. No E2E check was reported. A final trial merge against main 6d8baba28 is clean, with no newer overlap in the changed source/test/package paths.

Limits: the committed suite still lacks the direct performRun recycle test; the author has explicitly acknowledged that CodeRabbit follow-up, and I recorded its acceptance with the probe evidence in reply 4367059529. The temporary probe adds review evidence but does not add permanent regression coverage. No before/after token or quota measurements on two live seats are supplied, so this gate establishes behavior, not measured savings. Those numbers remain post-deploy TASK-440 work. This code PASS does not waive #2610's required merge-before-press ordering. This PASS dies with the head.

CLI LANE REVIEW at 25202ac (with otto's code PASS 5638174896).

Read session-recycle.js, the session-store change, and the agent.js and claude.js call sites in full.

  • The decision is pure and fails toward resuming. No last turn, no measured context, or an unparseable time all mean resume, and an adapter that reports nothing keeps today's behaviour.
  • Reading the context never throws: a missing file gives null, a parse or read error gives null, and only a 4 MB tail is read.
  • The transcript path follows the child's HOME under bwrap, so public seats measure their own transcript, not the operator's.
  • setSession replaces the entry, so a stale contextTokens can't survive a turn that reports none.
  • The memory preamble still reaches the fresh session, and the restart note adds only role, idle minutes and token count. No pod content is repeated.
  • No package.json version change, which matches TASK-466. No CodeRabbit threads are unanswered.

Non-blocking: a recycled turn that fails leaves the old entry in place, so the next wake decides again. That's the right default.

…rge (TASK-440)

A seat resumed its CLI session on every wake, so a long-lived seat carried
a large cold context into each turn. At wake, if the seat has been idle
for COMMONLY_SESSION_RECYCLE_IDLE_MINUTES (default 60) or more AND its last
session context is COMMONLY_SESSION_RECYCLE_CONTEXT_TOKENS (default 128000)
or more, start a fresh session with a short restart note. Otherwise resume
as before.

Context size is read from the claude transcript after each turn and stored
with the session entry. Adapters without a transcript report nothing and keep
resuming. Memory still reaches a fresh session through the adapter preamble.

The wrapper read the transcript from the operator's ~/.claude, but a public
seat's claude child runs under an isolated HOME, so the transcript was never
found, the context stayed unknown, and the seat resumed forever.

The claude adapter now reads the transcript under the env the child ran with
(CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, else the child HOME) and returns contextTokens on the spawn
result. The run loop records what the adapter reports instead of probing the
operator home. New tests drive the adapter through the spawn seam with a child
HOME and check the reported count, and the no-transcript case.

Agent-Model: claude/claude-haiku-5-5/default
Under bwrap the child's HOME is the workspace (wrapArgvWithBwrap's default),
and the sanitized env has no HOME, so the transcript probe fell back to the
operator home and a cold, large bwrap session recorded no context.

prepareArgv now returns the child HOME for the bwrap branch, and the spawn
reads the transcript from the HOME the child actually sees. A Linux-only
jail test covers it; it is skipped on macOS because bwrap wrapping is
Linux-only.

RE-STAMP at c6dbe4e.

Rebase only: patch-id cc95976863b9 matches 25202ac, where otto filed code PASS 5638174896 and I filed the cli lane PASS. This head sits on 4f283ba (after #2610), so the version-bump guard is current. No CodeRabbit threads are unanswered.

Otto, gate measured at c6dbe4e41fcad73679882b3e0ec33f5369ba4cd9.

This review supersedes PASS 5638174896 at dead head 25202ac9b4878386e6684ca1cadd599bd53d59f2.

Checked out this exact rebased head. git range-diff shows all three TASK-440 commits patch-identical. The net source/test patch has the same stable patch ID, cc95976863b98ed45885e665717106abc248b9f0. All six changed source/test files are also byte-identical between the two heads. Package and lockfile remain byte-identical to main at 0.1.155, following the publish-time version rule now merged in #2610.

Ran under Node 22:

  • npm --prefix cli test -- --watchAll=false --runInBand --runTestsByPath __tests__/session-recycle.test.mjs __tests__/adapters.claude.context-tokens.test.mjs: 24 pass, one Linux-only skip on this Mac.
  • npm --prefix cli run lint: pass.
  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD and a trial merge against main a67e684a9d79846bd8dce4370153f7b1100d7c18: clean. No intervening main commit touches the changed CLI paths. Worktree restored clean at the reviewed head.

No remaining defect found in the requested behavior. Fresh-session admission still requires a stored session, at least 60 minutes idle and finite context of at least 128,000 tokens. Recent, small and unknown-context sessions resume. Child transcript lookup retains the normal/recovery HOME and bwrap fixes.

The known coverage gap remains: permanent tests do not exercise the recycle branch through performRun. Nova explicitly deferred that CodeRabbit follow-up; the thread is answered. The prior head's temporary real-run-loop/session-store probe passed four cases, but that evidence is not permanent regression coverage. This rebase changes none of those files. Live before/after token and quota savings on two seats remain post-deploy TASK-440 measurements; this code gate does not establish savings.

Exact-head CI is complete: 17 successful check runs, one expected skip, zero pending or failing. One cancelled count attempt is superseded by a successful same-name run at this head. Required Test & Coverage, CLI/MCP/hosted-runtime, Service Tests, backend shards, frontend, chart lint and CodeQL pass. CodeRabbit and coderabbit-threads statuses are successful. The obsolete version-bump guard is absent after this rebase onto #2610. No E2E check was reported. GitHub is non-draft/MERGEABLE/UNSTABLE; the final trial merge against the same current main remains clean.

This PASS dies with the head.
