What

TASK-545 (D48). On a fresh session, claude seats are now taught two habits:

  1. Use the Agent tool for parallel reads.
  2. Split a large row into owner-scoped child rows before writing any code.

Codex seats get row slicing only. Public seats get neither.

The need, per the row: on 10-24, 4 of 18 claude seats used Agent.

Where the seat prompt lives (measured, no new path)

  • The -p prompt is the only seat-wide text in a private claude seat's argv. claude.js:100 builds it with buildMemoryPreamble (memory-bridge.js:60):

    • claude.js:814 for a normal spawn;
    • claude.js:944 for the session-recovery retry.

Codex builds the same preamble at codex.js:664 and passes it as the last argv item.

  • The bundled commonly skill can't carry the text. mountSkills (claude.js:843) mounts it only when a seat's environment declares skills.claude, and most fleet seats declare none. Where it is mounted, a private seat loads it natively, so it never appears in argv. The row's done-line is measured in argv.

  • The wake text and board text are shared by every adapter. The wake text in agent.js and the backend board text reach codex too, so a habit only claude can act on doesn't belong there.

So the habits go in the preamble's fresh-session block, next to the memory cues. They follow the same once-per-session rule, because a resumed session already holds them in its transcript.

Change

  • memory-bridge.js: adds a shared ROW_SLICING_CUE and a workCues option. The cues render as === Working a row ===, between the fresh-session cue and the current turn. With no cues, the output is byte-identical to before (pinned by a test).
  • claude.js: a private seat gets PARALLEL_READS_CUE and ROW_SLICING_CUE. publicTrust moves up so both prompt builds read it.
  • codex.js: a private seat gets ROW_SLICING_CUE only. normalizeSandboxTrust (pure) moves above the prompt build, and the duplicate call inside the try is removed.
  • Public seats get neither. Under dontAsk, their argv allows only Read and the MCP tools, on both the Seatbelt and bwrap paths. They have no subagent to spawn, and they answer strangers rather than working board rows. A legacy trust: 'internal' record reads as public, and tests cover that on both adapters.

This keeps one runtime change in one adapter file: the claude-only habit lives in claude.js, and the shared one in memory-bridge.js.

Tests

  • Argv assertions, per adapter:

    • claude: fresh, resumed, session-recovery, public, and legacy-internal. On public seats the prompt is found by content, because Seatbelt uses -p for its own profile.
    • codex: fresh, resumed, public, and legacy-internal.

The helper tests cover cue ordering, no cues on a resumed turn, and byte identity when no cues are passed.

  • Negative control: with the src change reverted, the three new adapter tests that expect the block fail, and memory-bridge.test.mjs fails to import ROW_SLICING_CUE.

  • Focused files: 122 passed, 1 skipped (the Linux-only bwrap test).

  • Full cli suite: 1586 passed. mention-event-types.contract.test.mjs fails 2 tests, on Cannot find module 'ts-node/register/transpile-only': backend deps aren't installed in this worktree. That failure is unrelated to this diff.

  • Lint: npm run lint is clean.

Proof still owed (operator)

The row is done when one live claude seat's spawn argv shows the text. The text only appears on a fresh session, so the proof needs:

  1. A CLI publish.
  2. A seat restart.
  3. A fresh-session spawn: a recycle, a new pod session, or the recovery retry.

Gate: Sable (code).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…ASK-545)

D48 asks claude seats to use the Agent tool for parallel reads, and to split
a large row into owner-scoped child rows before any code. On 10-24 only 4 of
18 claude seats used Agent.

Where the seat prompt lives, measured first. The only seat-wide text in a
private claude seat's argv is the -p prompt, which claude.js builds with
buildMemoryPreamble (memory-bridge.js). The bundled commonly skill is not in
a private seat's argv at all, and it is mounted only for seats that declare
skills.claude, which most fleet seats do not. So the habits ride the
preamble's fresh-session block, beside the memory cues and under the same
once-per-session rule.

- memory-bridge.js: ROW_SLICING_CUE, and a workCues option rendered as
"=== Working a row ===" on a fresh session only. No cues, no change.
- claude.js: a private seat gets parallel reads and row slicing, on the
first spawn and on the session-recovery retry.
- codex.js: a private seat gets row slicing alone; codex has no subagent
  tool.
- A public seat, and a legacy trust=internal record that reads as public,
  gets neither.

Walkthrough

The memory bridge now supports optional work cues in fresh-session prompts. The Claude and Codex adapters select cues based on trust settings. Tests cover fresh and resumed sessions, plus public and legacy internal trust cases.

Changes: Fresh-session work cues

Layer / File(s) Summary
Work cue contract and preamble
cli/src/lib/memory-bridge.js, cli/__tests__/memory-bridge.test.mjs
The memory bridge exports ROW_SLICING_CUE and renders nonempty work cues in a “Working a row” section on fresh sessions. Tests cover cue placement, omission, and content.
Claude prompt cue selection
cli/src/lib/adapters/claude.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.claude.test.mjs, cli/__tests__/adapters.claude.environment.test.mjs
Claude prompts include parallel-read and row-slicing cues for non-public seats. Fresh-session recovery prompts use the same selection. Tests cover fresh and resumed sessions and public or legacy internal trust.
Codex prompt cue selection
cli/src/lib/adapters/codex.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.codex.test.mjs
Codex prompts include the row-slicing cue for non-public sandbox trust. Tests cover fresh and resumed sessions and public or legacy internal trust.

Sable code-leg gate for #2730 (TASK-545) at f6a4486. Scope: the property the author named, that no public or resumed spawn carries the "Working a row" block, plus the ordering and the fresh-session rule.

Property holds on both adapters

  • Public seats get no block. claude.js takes publicTrust from ctx.environment, which is already normalized at about line 792. So a legacy trust: 'internal' record reads as public there. codex.js normalizes before its check. Both pass workCues: [] to buildMemoryPreamble when the seat is public. The retry prompt in claude.js reuses the same workCues variable, so the session-recovery spawn is covered too.
  • Resumed spawns get no block. buildMemoryPreamble returns before the work-cue block whenever freshSession is false. Both adapters pass freshSession: !isResume (claude) or !ctx.sessionId (codex). A resumed turn therefore never reaches the block, even when cues are passed.
  • Other adapters are untouched. dsh, goose, hermes, opencode, pi and qwen call buildMemoryPreamble without workCues, so they get the byte-identical preamble. The helper's no-cue output is pinned by a test.
  • Ordering. The block sits between the fresh-session cue and === Current turn ===. A test asserts that order.

Verified at this head

  • Focused CLI suites: adapters.claude.environment, adapters.claude, adapters.codex and memory-bridge. 4 suites, 122 passed and 1 skipped, matching the author's count. I ran them on Node 22 in a detached worktree. The node_modules I linked comes from a different checkout, and its lockfile is not byte-identical to this branch's. The counts agree, so I did not chase the difference.
  • Tests assert presence on the fresh claude and codex turns, absence on the public claude and codex spawns, absence on the resumed claude and codex turns, and absence for the legacy internal record.

Non-blocking note

  • The gate reads the same predicate the existing public confinement reads: sandbox.trust === 'public'. A spawn whose environment is absent is not treated as public by either adapter, so it would get the block. Confinement already works this way. If a public seat can ever spawn with no environment, that is a pre-existing gap that this change inherits. The pod should confirm that public spawns always carry an environment.

Not run: the author's claim that a live fresh-session argv shows the text. That is operator proof, not a gate item.
