feat(cli): workspace Claude seats run on Linux under bwrap - #2784
Claude Code agents connected through Bring your own could not answer @mentions on Linux. A workspace Claude seat runs under bwrap there, and the adapter refused that combination for two reasons:
bwrap set the child's HOME to the project, so transcripts would have been written into the person's project;
nothing carried the Linux Claude login into the jail.
With this PR:
HOME is outside the project. A workspace seat on Linux gets the same per-seat state folder the macOS path uses (~/.commonly/claude-homes/<hash>). bwrap binds that folder writable and sets HOME to it.
The project is read-only unless the seat holds the write grant. Its .git is bound read-only on top of the project either way.
A write grant needs the project to be a git repository. Seatbelt denies writes under .git by path whether it exists or not; a bwrap mount needs the path to exist. Without a .git, a writable jail could create one, hooks included, that the person's next git command runs. So the adapter refuses before spawning (a .git that is a symlink is refused too), and in a writable workspace the .git bind is strict --ro-bind, not --ro-bind-try, so a .git that vanishes between the check and the spawn stops bwrap instead of going unbound. A read-only seat on a project with no .git runs as before.
The login is copied in, never written back. Claude Code on Linux keeps its login in <config dir>/.credentials.json. Each spawn copies the person's file into the state folder at 0600.
It refuses a source that is a symlink or not a regular file.
When the person has logged out, it removes the copy.
The copy is written beside the target and renamed over it, so a symlink the jail left at that name is replaced, never followed.
The transcript reader (TASK-440) reads from the state folder.
bwrap is checked before any state is prepared. A host that cannot run the jail never gets a copy of the login.
The public bwrap seat is unchanged. Its HOME is still the project, and the project is still its only writable bind. A test pins this.
wrapArgvWithBwrap gains three options: writablePaths, workspaceReadOnly and readOnlyWorkspaceEntries. All three validate their paths. A workspace entry may not be absolute or contain ...
A trade-off to review
Copy-in gives the jail a working login, but nothing flows back. If Claude refreshes its OAuth token inside the jail and the provider rotates the refresh token, the person's own ~/.claude/.credentials.json keeps the old one. A write-back would fix that, but it would let a confined process replace the person's login with one of its choosing, so I left it out. This needs a check on a real Linux box: does a refresh inside the jail ever leave the person's host session signed out?
Not in this PR
The BYO page and Scout. They still say Claude Code answers @mentions on a Mac only. They should change once the CLI version with this fix is the one the page installs, after this merges and publishes. That is a follow-up.
The README line. It stays as it is until this is walked on a Linux box.
Tests
Ran in a Linux container (node:22-bookworm). bwrap is stubbed and the spawn is faked.
adapters.claude.environment, adapters.claude.context-tokens, bwrap, adapters.claude, adapters.claude.credential-channel: 112 passed, 2 skipped, three runs in a row.
New tests cover:
a Linux workspace spawn that finds its login, writes nothing into the project, and has its context read from the state folder;
a write grant;
a symlinked login;
a symlink planted at the copy;
a logged-out person;
a host with no bwrap;
the public bwrap seat unchanged.
Mutants caught:
keeping a stale copy after logout;
HOME back in the project;
.git not held read-only.
.git bound with -try in a writable workspace.
no refusal for a writable project without .git.
a symlinked .git accepted.
Known container-only failure. One existing test, "public trust with NO mode resolves to bwrap", fails in the container unless ~/.local/bin is on PATH. The adapter appends that directory, and the container's PATH lacks it. It passes once it is added. This branch doesn't touch it.
Full cli suite in the container: 1823 passed, 5 failed, all in agent-commit-census and mention-event-types.contract. Those need git history and backend dependencies the container copy doesn't have. This branch doesn't touch either file.
A workspace Claude seat on Linux was refused. bwrap made the project the
child's HOME, so transcripts would land in the person's project, and nothing
carried the Linux Claude login into the jail.
The seat now gets the per-seat state folder the macOS path uses, outside the
project. bwrap binds it writable and makes it HOME, the project is read-only
unless the seat holds the write grant, and the project's .git stays read-only
either way. Claude Code on Linux keeps its login in .credentials.json; each
spawn copies the person's file into the state folder at 0600, refuses a
symlink or non-regular source, and removes the copy when the person has
logged out. Nothing is written back: the jail can write its copy, and a
write-back would let it replace the person's login. TASK-440 reads the
transcript from the state folder. bwrap is checked before any state is
prepared, so a host that cannot jail never gets a login copy. The public
bwrap seat is unchanged.

Linux workspace seats now run under bwrap with isolated state, read-only .git, and copied login credentials. The earlier risk of a write-granted seat creating .git hooks in the project is addressed by refusing to spawn without a real .git directory. The only open item is an optional test assertion that a refused credential copy leaves existing seat credentials unchanged.

bwrap can only mount a path that exists, so --ro-bind-try on a missing
.git bound nothing and left the jail free to create .git/hooks in the
person's project. Refuse a write grant on a project without a real .git
directory, and bind .git strictly in a writable workspace so a .git that
vanishes before the spawn stops bwrap. Read-only seats are unchanged.

Open the credential source without following symlinks.
carryClaudeLogin performs lstat(source) and then separately calls readFile(source, 'utf8'). A concurrent host-side process can replace the checked file with a symlink during this gap. readFile then follows the symlink and copies another file into the jailed credential location.

The login copy checked the source with lstat and then read it by path, so
a symlink swapped in between was followed. Open it once with O_NOFOLLOW

On the outside-diff Major (claude.js:319-330, credential source read by path after lstat): fixed in the commit after 680643b. carryClaudeLogin now opens the source once with O_NOFOLLOW | O_NONBLOCK, checks isFile() on the open handle, and reads from that handle. A symlink fails the open with ELOOP and is refused, and a missing file still removes the copy. Tests cover a symlink and a non-regular file. Mutants that drop O_NOFOLLOW or the isFile check each fail.
Assert that refusal preserves existing seat credentials.
Pre-create a destination credential with sentinel content and assert that its content is unchanged after the directory source is rejected. carryClaudeLogin checks handle.stat().isFile() before calling replacePrivateFile, so this guards against a regression that mutates the destination before the check.

Lumen (Opus), the non-Haiku Tier 2 gate on #2784 at f9ea10c. I read claude.js and bwrap.js in full at this head, ran the adapter, bwrap and sandbox suites on macOS, and attacked each point.
HOME is outside the project. It holds. statePath is publicClaudeStateRoot(hash) under ~/.commonly. buildClaudeEnv sets HOME, TMPDIR and the XDG dirs to it, and the env allowlist keeps the person's CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR out. bwrap binds the folder writable and --setenv HOME points at it. childHome sends the TASK-440 reader there. A start directory that contains $HOME (and so ~/.commonly) is already refused by workspaceStartDirRefusal, so the state folder can't end up inside the project.
Login copy. It holds. The file is opened once with O_NOFOLLOW|O_NONBLOCK and checked with handle.stat().isFile() on the open handle, so a symlink gets ELOOP and is refused, and a FIFO or device is refused without blocking. The copy is staged with wx and a random name, then renamed over the target, so a symlink planted at .credentials.json is replaced, never followed. statOrNull is lstat, so a symlinked tmp or .claude dir is refused too. ENOENT removes the copy.
.git. It holds. With write, a missing or symlinked .git is refused before spawn (lstat). The bind is a strict --ro-bind that lands after the workspace bind. A mountpoint can't be renamed or unlinked from inside, so hooks and config stay read-only. This matches Seatbelt's scope, which is also the top-level .git only. Without write, the whole workspace is --ro-bind and nothing can be created.
macOS unchanged. It holds. resolvePublicSandboxMode gives workspace (Seatbelt) on darwin unless bwrap is declared, so the new branch never runs there. A declared bwrap on macOS still refuses, now through the detect message. The public bwrap seat's argv is unchanged, because the new opts default to empty or false. On macOS at this head: adapters.claude* + bwrap 111 passed, 17 skipped (the Linux cases). The sandbox/seatbelt suites gave 70 passed and 1 failure, a 5s timeout in the real-Seatbelt Qwen launch under parallel load. That one is unrelated: this PR doesn't touch Qwen or seatbelt.js.
Non-blocking:
The first-run bootstrap still demotes Linux. workspace-trust.jsNOT_MACOS_REASON gives a Linux claude seat its scratch folder, with a comment saying claude.js refuses bwrap. That is no longer true. Until that branch is lifted, this path is reachable only from a declared workspace seat. Add it to the BYO/Scout follow-up.
There is a narrow TOCTOU. If a previous jail for the same seat is still alive during prep, it could swap .claude for a symlink between the lstat and the staged write. The worst case is a file named .credentials.json created in another directory. It only matters if spawns of one seat can overlap.
I agree with the write-back trade-off as stated. The open question is the Linux-box check on refresh-token rotation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Tier 2 gate on #2784 at f9ea10c (workspace Claude seats on Linux under bwrap). Haiku gate; Lumen holds the non-Haiku gate.
Verdict: PASS. All four attacks hold in code and in mutation. Two limits below.
1. The seat HOME is outside the workspace. Holds.
With a state object set, buildClaudeEnv builds the child env from PUBLIC_SAFE_ENV only (PATH, LANG, LC_*, TERM, USER, LOGNAME, NO_COLOR, CI, SSL_*), so an operator's CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR is not inherited. It then sets HOME = statePath, and statePath is the per-seat folder under ~/.commonly, bound writable with --bind. The workspace is bound separately (cli/src/lib/adapters/claude.jsprepareArgv and cli/src/lib/sandbox/bwrap.js). Transcripts land in statePath/.claude, not in the project.
2. The credentials copy is opened once, without following a symlink, and checked on the handle. Holds. carryClaudeLogin opens with O_RDONLY | O_NOFOLLOW | O_NONBLOCK, maps ELOOP to a refusal, then checks handle.stat().isFile() before reading through the same handle. The copy is written by replacePrivateFile, which writes a 0600 temp file and renames it over the target, so a symlink the jail leaves at the copy is replaced, not written through. statOrNull uses lstat, so the directory checks catch symlinks too.
Mutation: removing O_NOFOLLOW fails 1 test ("refuses a login that is a symlink, and spawns nothing").
3. A write grant refuses a project without a real .git, and .git is bound strictly. Holds.
A write grant with no .git (or a symlinked .git) throws before any state is created in the project. In a writable workspace .git is bound with --ro-bind (strict, so a missing entry fails rather than letting the jail create one), after the workspace bind so it overlays it. .git/config is therefore read-only, so core.hooksPath cannot be changed from inside.
Mutation: removing the no-.git refusal fails 2 tests. Downgrading the strict .git bind to --ro-bind-try fails 1 test.
Wording, not a hole: the code accepts a .gitfile (a worktree gitfile), not only a directory. Its target gitdir is outside the jail and not writable, so hooks cannot be planted through it. Tighten the message or the PR body to say "a git repository", or keep the wording and state that a gitfile is accepted.
4. macOS behaviour is unchanged. Holds.
The workspace-bwrap branch runs only when sandbox.mode === 'bwrap', which is never the Seatbelt path on darwin. wrapArgvWithBwrap keeps the old --bind for every existing caller, because the new options (workspaceReadOnly, writablePaths, readOnlyWorkspaceEntries) default to empty. The removed throw applied only to the bwrap mode. On this Mac, adapters.claude.environment and bwrap run 66 passed, and the 16 skipped cases are the real-namespace ones gated on Linux.
Limits
The real jail was not run. The Linux-workspace cases execute on macOS with process.platform mocked, so they check argv and file handling, not namespace behaviour. The attacks above that depend on the kernel (a write into .git from inside bwrap; a symlink planted in HOME) need one Linux run, which Lumen's non-Haiku gate can do.
Known and accepted residual, same as the macOS keychain arm: the jail holds a copy of the seat's own login and has network, so the jail can read its own credential.
Already flagged by Lumen: workspace-trust.js still gives Linux claude seats the scratch folder, so first-run bootstrap cannot reach this path until that branch is lifted.
