Board row: Sharpen TASK-503. Stacked on #2806. Until #2806 merges, this diff includes its commits. The new work is the top commit only.

Otto's security gate on #2806 (review 5651275918) left two non-blocking items. This PR closes both.

  • A refused run now exits 2. Before this, a refusal exited 0, so an upgrade script would carry on with the history missing. Exit codes are listed in the script header: 0 done or dry run, 1 some rows failed, 2 refused.
  • The overlap SQL is now tested against a real database. The unit suite fakes every dependency, which is why inverting the SQL still passed. __tests__/service/backfillLocalMessagesToPg.test.js runs the exported productionDeps against PostgreSQL and MongoDB:
    • Overlap count. It's asserted as a delta, because other suites share the database. An older unmarked row counts, and so does one at the same instant. A newer row and a row carrying a Mongo id do not.
    • Dry run, apply and rerun. The dry run writes nothing. Apply copies three rows in batches of 2, and a rerun copies nothing.
    • Refusal. A PG row with no Mongo id that predates the newest Mongo message makes the run refuse, and nothing is written.

The service test skips locally without INTEGRATION_TEST, and the host had no free test-DB slot, so CI's service shard is its first real run. The unit suite still passes (6/6).

Walkthrough

The backfill CLI now supports injected arguments and store setup, returns exit codes based on the backfill report, and closes stores. Unit tests cover CLI results. Integration tests cover backfill behavior with PostgreSQL and MongoDB.

Changes: Local PostgreSQL and message backfill

Layer / File(s) Summary
CLI store lifecycle and exit codes
backend/scripts/backfill-local-messages-to-pg.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/scripts/backfillLocalMessagesToPg.test.js
The CLI exports store and exit-code helpers, accepts injected arguments and store setup, and closes stores after a run. Unit tests check exit codes for refused runs, failed rows, clean applies, and dry runs.
Database backfill integration tests
backend/__tests__/service/backfillLocalMessagesToPg.test.js
Integration tests cover overlap counts, dry runs, applied copies, reruns, MongoDB-only pods, and refusal when older unmarked PostgreSQL history exists.

Fix: the PG_PASSWORD append can corrupt an existing .env that has no trailing newline.

The appended line starts directly at the end of the file. This installer targets pre-existing .env files, which may be hand-edited and lack a final newline. In that case PG_PASSWORD=... joins the last line.

If the last line is JWT_SECRET=..., the secret silently changes, which invalidates sessions. The ^PG_PASSWORD=.+$ check also keeps failing, so every rerun appends another value. The same defect exists in scripts/demo-bootstrap.sh at Line 123.

Start the append with a newline.

🐛 Proposed fix
-  ( umask 077; printf 'PG_PASSWORD=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 24)" >> "$ENV_FILE" )
+  ( umask 077; printf '\nPG_PASSWORD=%s\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 24)" >> "$ENV_FILE" )

Apply the same change in scripts/demo-bootstrap.sh. The localComposePostgres test regex PG_PASSWORD=%s still matches.

Assert that the Mongo message remains unreconciled after refusal.

Add a Mongo-only pod case for productionDeps.copy.

The suite seeds the PostgreSQL pod before the tests, so the current apply case cannot trigger the 23503 fallback. Add a distinct Mongo-only pod and assert that --apply syncs the pod and copies its message.

Suggested test
+  test('syncs a Mongo-only pod before copying its messages', async () => {
+    const mongoOnlyPod = new mongoose.Types.ObjectId().toHexString();
+    await mongoose.connection.db.collection('pods').insertOne({
+      _id: new mongoose.Types.ObjectId(mongoOnlyPod),
+      name: 'mongo-only-backfill-503',
+      type: 'chat',
+      createdBy: new mongoose.Types.ObjectId(USER),
+      members: [new mongoose.Types.ObjectId(USER)],
+    });
+    const doc = await MongoMessage.create({
+      podId: mongoOnlyPod,
+      userId: USER,
+      content: `${MARKER} mongo-only`,
+      messageType: 'text',
+      createdAt: new Date(),
+    });
+
+    try {
+      const report = await backfillLocalMessages(productionDeps(pool), {
+        apply: true,
+        force: true,
+      });
+      expect(report).toMatchObject({ pending: 1, moved: 1, failed: 0 });
+      expect(await pgCopies()).toEqual([doc._id.toString()]);
+    } finally {
+      await pool.query('DELETE FROM messages WHERE pod_id = $1', [mongoOnlyPod]);
+      await pool.query('DELETE FROM pods WHERE id = $1', [mongoOnlyPod]);
+    }
+  });

The existing Mongo-only test in pgMessageReconcile.test.js covers the analogous reconciliation path, but it does not exercise productionDeps.copy.

Cover the exit-code contract at main().

Both changed test suites call backfillLocalMessages directly. Neither imports or invokes main() or asserts process.exitCode. A pure exitCodeFor(report) test would still pass if main() stopped assigning the result.

Add main() coverage for refused = 2, partial failure = 1, and success or dry run = 0. Keep the assignment in the CLI path:

Suggested implementation
+export function exitCodeFor(
+  report: Pick<LocalBackfillReport, 'refused' | 'failed'>,
+): number {
+  if (report.refused) return 2;
+  if (report.failed) return 1;
+  return 0;
+}
+
 export async function main(): Promise<void> {
...
-      process.exitCode = 2;
       console.log(`REFUSED — PostgreSQL already holds ${report.overlap} messages with no Mongo id`
...
-    if (report.failed) process.exitCode = 1;
+    process.exitCode = exitCodeFor(report);

…ns against real PG (TASK-503)

Follow-up to Otto's gate on #2806. A refused run now exits 2, so an
upgrade script that runs it stops. productionDeps is exported, and a
Tier 1 service test runs it against real PostgreSQL and MongoDB:
- the overlap count is pinned as a delta, covering older, same-instant,
  newer and marked rows;
- dry run, apply and rerun round-trip;
- refusal on overlapping history.

Add a CLI-level exit-code test.

The supplied refusal test checks report.refused, report.overlap, and copied rows. It does not execute the CLI path that assigns process.exitCode = 2. Add a test that invokes the CLI entrypoint or isolates this mapping and asserts exit code 2. The test must fail if the assignment is removed, and it must restore process.exitCode after the assertion.

As per path instructions, changed behavior requires a test that fails without the fix.

Document refused dry runs as exit code 2.

When apply is false, an overlap still sets report.refused, and main sets process.exitCode to 2. Update the exit-code documentation and add a regression assertion for this case.

- * Exit codes: 0 done (or dry run), 1 some rows failed, 2 refused.

Tier 1 gate, #2824 at fa730e3 (TASK-503 follow-up to #2806).

What I checked:

  • The overlap SQL test runs against real PG in CI. Service shard 2/2 is green and reports all 3 cases running, not skipping. Locally the real-PG run cannot connect (password authentication fails), so I rely on the CI shard for that part.
  • The new process.exitCode = 2 on a refused backfill is not covered by any test. No test imports main(), reads exitCode, or runs the refused path through the script entry point. The refusal test calls backfillLocalMessages and checks the report only.

The exit code is the first of the two things this PR says it does, so it should be pinned.

Mutant (local, non-integration run): process.exitCode = 2 removed. The suite does not exercise it, so the run tells us nothing; the CI shard does not cover it either.

Required before PASS:

  • Add one test that drives the refused path through main() (or whatever entry point the script exposes) and asserts process.exitCode is 2. A productionDeps export is already there for the test to use.

Tier 1 re-gate, #2824 at 4614567 (TASK-503 follow-up).

What I checked:

  • exitCodeFor is pure and maps refused to 2, failed to 1, and everything else to 0. The unit suite runs it on real backfillLocalMessages reports, and it passes 8/8 on Node 22.
  • CI's real-PG overlap test is green at the previous head, and the overlap SQL is unchanged here.

Mutants, each restored, tree clean after:

  • refused maps to 0: 1 fails. The mapping is pinned.
  • failed and refused checks swapped: 0 fail. This only matters when both are true, so it is minor.
  • The wiring line in main() (process.exitCode = exitCodeFor(report);) removed: 0 fail. This is the gap.

The exit code only reaches the process through that one line in main(), and no test drives main(). The test named "a refused run exits 2, so an upgrade script stops" checks the pure function, not the process exit, so the name overstates what it pins.

Required before PASS:

  • Make the refused exit path observable without live services. For example, have main() return the code, or accept an injected deps object, and assert the value for a refused report. Then the wiring is covered, and the test name matches what it checks.

main() takes its store opener as a parameter (openStores by default), sets
process.exitCode and returns it. The unit suite runs main() on fake stores:
refused sets 2 and still closes the stores, failed rows set 1, a clean run
and a dry run set 0. Dropping the exitCode assignment fails 2 of 8.

Code gate for #2824 at head d82d567.

What I checked

  • main() now takes its store opener as a parameter (default openStores), sets process.exitCode = exitCodeFor(report), and returns that value. The finally closes the stores.
  • exitCodeFor maps failed to 1, refused to 2, otherwise 0.
  • __tests__/unit/scripts/backfillLocalMessagesToPg.test.js: 8/8 pass on Node 22 (--runInBand). The main() exit code block drives main() through a fake opener and asserts the return value, process.exitCode, and that close runs once.

Mutations (one at a time, file restored and hash-checked after each)

  • process.exitCode = exitCodeFor(report) replaced with process.exitCode = 0 (return value kept): 2 tests fail.
  • refused mapped to 1: 1 test fails.
  • failed mapped to 0: 1 test fails.
  • return process.exitCode removed: TypeScript rejects the file (TS2322), so the suite does not run. The type checker covers this case and the runtime assertions cover the rest.

Non-blocking notes

  • A run that is both failed and refused is not tested. exitCodeFor returns 1 first, so the current behaviour is deliberate but unpinned.
  • CI at this head was still pending when I checked. The real-PG service shards exercise copy and overlap logic, not this wiring, so they do not change this verdict.

Code gate for #2824 at head 1544776.

What changed since d82d567

  • Real-PG service test: a pod that exists only in MongoDB. It asserts the message copies and the pod is mirrored into PG. The copy path goes through syncPodFromMongo in productionDeps. CI shard 2/2 ran it and it passed (608/608).
  • Unit test: a refused dry run asserts exit 2. The header now documents that a refused dry run exits 2.
  • main() wiring is unchanged.

Checks

  • Unit suite on Node 22: 8/8 pass.
  • Mutant, refused mapped to 1: 2 tests fail. Restored, hash-checked.
  • CI: Service Tests 1/2 and 2/2 pass. Backend typecheck and lint pass.

Open note from d82d567 closed

  • A run that is both failed and refused cannot happen. refused returns before the copy loop, so failed is 0 whenever refused is true.

#2824 (comment) (a main() exit-code test): fixed at d82d567. The unit suite calls main() with injected stores and asserts process.exitCode is 2 on a refused run. Replacing the assignment with 0 fails 2 tests.

Close the PostgreSQL pool if MongoDB disconnection fails.

If mongoose.disconnect() rejects, close() never calls pool.end(). Mongoose 7 documents that rejection path. Use try/finally so a cleanup failure does not leave the PostgreSQL pool open. (mongoosejs.com)

Proposed change
-  const close = async () => { await mongoose.disconnect(); await pool.end(); };
+  const close = async () => {
+    try {
+      await mongoose.disconnect();
+    } finally {
+      await pool.end();
+    }
+  };

Review comment at @backend/scripts/backfill-local-messages-to-pg.ts at line 153:
Update the close function to call pool.end() in a finally block around
mongoose.disconnect(), ensuring the PostgreSQL pool closes even if MongoDB
disconnection rejects.
