Change

TASK-521 / ADR-021 runtime retirement. Removes the gateway Deployment, Service, ConfigMap, both PVC templates (including the alternate provisioning PVC path), gateway-only StorageClass, gateway values, backend/ops-runner gateway env, gateway token references and the now-unconsumed shared GitHub PAT projection. Removes gateway detection/build/tag logic from Deploy Dev and recursive submodule checkout from Deploy Dev, Deploy Staging and Tests. The retired tool-contract check is removed from Tests because it requires that submodule; the script itself belongs to the separate driver deletion work.

No agent User, memory, pod membership or application data code changes. Commonly Bot, cloud Codex, LiteLLM, provisioning RBAC and backend/frontend deploy paths remain.

Release authorization and rollout

Lily released TASK-521 on its board row at 2026-10-25 09:57Z after SRE verified the second backup copy (4/4 checksums) and spot restore (3/3 files). This chart removal deletes the old PVC resources; that consequence is intentional and requires SRE review before press. No deployment has been dispatched here.

After merge: Deploy Dev, SRE confirms production health and absence of the gateway resources, then SRE rotates the retired credentials. This PR does not delete provider secrets from their external store.

No-importer / consumer proof

  • Removed Helm templates were selected by agents.clawdbot only. Removed alternate agent-provisioning/pvc.yaml declared the same clawdbot-workspace-pvc; its only gate was agentProvisioning.createWorkspacePvc, now removed from shipped values.
  • rg 'agents.clawdbot|CLAWDBOT|MOLTBOT|clawdbot-gateway-token|githubPat' k8s/helm/commonly/templates k8s/helm/commonly/values*.yaml has no active resource/value reference. Historical comments and bundled documentation may still mention moltbot; those do not deploy it.
  • No submodules:, steps.gateway, GATEWAY_TAG, verify:moltbot-tools, or gateway Docker build remains in the three affected workflows.
  • The shared GITHUB_PAT chart projection had no consumer after backend/ops/cloud Codex moved to GitHub App tokens; the gateway was its last chart consumer. No live external secret is revoked in this diff.
  • _external/clawdbot and legacy driver source remain owned by TASK-520. No source/submodule deletion in this PR.

Verification

  • bash scripts/verify-retired-gateway-chart.sh passes. Runs default/dev/staging/local with legacy gateway, persistence, provisioning-PVC and shared-PAT flags explicitly enabled; none can resurrect the removed resources or credential projections. Also checks the three workflows for retired build/checkout paths. Added to Chart Lint CI.
  • helm lint k8s/helm/commonly passes.
  • Four baseline-versus-edited render comparisons: default removes five gateway objects; dev removes ConfigMap + two PVCs; staging/local remove the ConfigMap. Every remaining object is structurally identical after removing exactly the four gateway env vars and the gateway/PAT secret projections. Parsed with Ruby YAML; no dependency installation or Docker execution.
  • Restored-service mutation makes the guard fail (the removed gateway values also prevent that old template from rendering).
  • Shell syntax and git diff --check pass.
  • Full suites left to CI. No local Docker build or test container run.

Gates

Draft pending fresh CI/CodeRabbit, then Sable + Rhea Tier 2 gates and SRE release review. Do not mark TASK-521 complete until production verification and credential rotation are recorded.

Walkthrough

The Helm chart no longer configures or renders the Clawdbot gateway and related storage resources. Deployment workflows no longer build or set its image tag. Chart lint now checks rendered chart lanes and workflow files for retired gateway references.

Changes: Clawdbot gateway retirement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove gateway chart resources and values
k8s/helm/commonly/values*.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/agent-provisioning/pvc.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/agents/clawdbot-*.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/agents/cloud-codex-deployment.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/agent-configs.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/pvcs/*
Removes the gateway Deployment, Service, ConfigMap, storage resources, and associated values. The Codex installer comment changes; installer behavior remains unchanged.
Remove gateway runtime credentials and environment
k8s/helm/commonly/templates/core/backend-deployment.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/ops/ops-runner-deployment.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/templates/secrets/*, k8s/helm/commonly/values.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/values-local.yaml, k8s/helm/commonly/values-staging.yaml
Removes gateway environment variables and gateway-token and GitHub PAT secret entries. Related GitHub PAT settings and overrides are removed.
Update deployment and chart checks
.github/workflows/deploy-dev.yml, .github/workflows/deploy-staging.yml, .github/workflows/tests.yml, scripts/verify-retired-gateway-chart.sh, backend/__tests__/unit/scripts/moltbotToolContract.test.js
Removes the gateway image build and Helm image-tag update. Checkout no longer fetches submodules recursively, and tool-tests no longer runs verify:moltbot-tools. Chart lint runs a script that checks rendered lanes and workflow files for retired references.

  • Issue 1050 concerns retirement of the Moltbot/Clawdbot tier. This change removes its Helm resources, values, deployment paths, and credential references.
  • Issue 371 concerns legacy Codex credentials in the Clawdbot pod. This change removes the deployment and associated credential projections and auth-seed path.

The new check that retired gateway resources are gone from the chart can silently pass on large rendered output even when a retired reference is present. Fix the grep/SIGPIPE interaction before relying on it as a merge or CI gate.

Detect references to the retired StorageClass.

If a PVC renders storageClassName: filestore-sc, this pattern does not match it. The check can report success even though the PVC references the retired StorageClass. Include storageClassName in the checked fields and add a positive-control fixture that makes this check fail. As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test” (rule 1).

Reject the retired runtime before K8s provisioning.

Both registry provision and reprovision still pass moltbot to the K8s provisioner. That path writes the account ConfigMap. startAgentRuntime then reports started: true without checking the shared Deployment. If restart cannot find the removed Deployment, it returns restarted: false, but the route still saves status: 'provisioned' and returns a normal response.

Add one retirement guard at the shared K8s provisioning boundary. Both routes reach this boundary before provisionOpenClawAccount, so they reject moltbot before writing runtime account or installation state.

74f508c addresses both in-scope review/CI findings:

  • StorageClass field coverage: the retirement detector includes storageClassName, with a positive control for a PVC referencing filestore-sc. Removing that field from the detector makes the control fail. Four chart lanes still pass.
  • Backend CI failure: removed the obsolete assertion requiring the retired verify:moltbot-tools workflow invocation. Remaining script-unit coverage passes 59/59 on Node 22 in a targeted single-file run. The script itself remains under TASK-520 ownership.

The K8s provision/reprovision finding is valid and belongs to TASK-520's runtime retirement boundary. Reported to Kite in pod message 85442. This PR remains draft and must not press until that boundary refuses moltbot before account/installation writes, or the driver is removed. Helm/CI retirement alone does not close that entry point. Fresh CI is running; code/security/SRE gates follow.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Do not use grep -q in this pipefail pipeline.

When grep -q finds an early match, it can exit before sed finishes. sed can then receive SIGPIPE, causing the pipeline to return non-zero despite the retired reference. The caller treats that result as a clean file.

Use a non-early-exit grep and discard its output.
