MCP preserves indexed matches across scoped searches and pagination, including continuation within one file. Bounded source context and improved filename matching reduce follow-up searches. Document warm search comparisons for small and big repos and remove the comparison scripts.

Search Before After
More matches than one page in a file Remaining lines can be skipped The cursor resumes within that file
Regex over long blank runs The newline guard repeatedly scans the same suffix A cross-line match switches to one pass over line boundaries
Literal or regex input Inline parsing can alter the pattern Explicit modes preserve the pattern and casing
Multiple paths or globs Limited scope controls Additive paths, globs, and hidden fields
**/*image*/** Can admit image_tests.rs outside an image directory Requires a descendant file
Filename fragment http_client Can miss the http-client module Fuzzy filename mode treats separators alike
Small content result sets Matching lines can lack useful context Include bounded surrounding source

Explicit filename regex and glob modes retain their exact semantics. Searches stay within the index. Exclusions remain active during broader suggestions.

Core grep also keeps ordinary regex matches within line boundaries and avoids full-index glob passes for sparse content candidates.

For ^\s*def example over 80,000 blank lines followed by a declaration, the median of three warm MCP calls fell from 2,692 ms to 0.40 ms. This synthetic case isolates the newline guard; startup is excluded.

Bucket Model Shell time FFF time Wall reduction Token reduction
Small repo Opus 5.5 10.4 s 9.2 s 11.7% 8.6%
Small repo GPT-6 Astra 9.0 s 8.1 s 10.3% 6.7%
Big repo Opus 5.5 24.7 s 14.3 s 42.1% 3.4%
Big repo GPT-6 Astra 21.7 s 10.4 s 52.2% 8.2%

Six additional tasks in the small repo were frozen before tuning. The selected implementation produced these results:

Model Wall reduction Token reduction
Opus 5.5 15.8% 15.7%
GPT-6 Astra -10.5% -12.3%

All 72 recorded trials returned correct answers. The 50% target remains unmet in the small repo. Negative reductions indicate regressions.

Trials run sequentially with a fresh model context. Startup, indexing, and initial Git refresh occur before timing. Both arms use the same source-verification rule. The MCP client exposes tools directly. Tokens include cached input.

Only the small repo had a separate held-out run.

Area Before After
multi_grep default output 8 context lines per match without a budget (20 matches: 20k chars) Matching lines and definitions, as in grep
Explicit context No budget (400 matches with context: 5: 98k chars) Context rows share an 8k-char budget; every matching line stays
Page overflow The full page changed to compact mode Earlier matches keep definition bodies; later matches show one line
Cursor after an edit between pages Could skip matches in later files or return an empty page Skips only matches already shown from the same file
hidden: false Literal retries returned hidden files; .github/** includes and a hidden path were ignored Hidden files stay out; explicit hidden includes and paths override the filter
mode: "literal" with \n Searched for a newline Searches for a backslash and n
Plain grep filename suggestions Said "No matching definitions" Says "No matches found"
find_files fragment ranking Alphabetical Exact name, exact path component, name prefix, then depth and frecency (vf_ lists vf_* before avf_*)
find_files fragment pass on Chromium (460k files) 20–23 ms on one thread 9–11 ms with rayon; hits match main's 9–12 ms
Match inside an expanded definition body Printed twice Printed once
find_files Config.zig in Ghostty src/config.zig could outrank Config.zig An uppercase query prefers its exact case; among exact names, lsp/lsp.ts beats config/lsp.ts
path: ".github" with hidden: false when only pkg/.github exists 0 matches The nested hidden directory opens
paths: [".config", "src"] with hidden: false — Only the root .config opens; src/.config stays hidden like rg .config src

Suggestions after a hidden path with hidden: false Could list other hidden files Hidden paths stay out
find_files with "filters": null Invalid params Treated as no filters
Grep maxResults above 200 Capped silently Cap documented in the README

📝 Walkthrough

MCP adds structured search scopes, filename search modes, expanded grep options, source-bearing suggestions, and match-level pagination. Core constraint planning and line-bounded regex matching also change. The README and MCP instructions describe the updated behavior and benchmark results.

Changes: Search behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Core grep planning and regex matching
crates/fff-core/src/grep/prefilter.rs, crates/fff-core/src/grep/regex.rs, crates/fff-core/src/index/constraints.rs
Constraint planning accepts a prefilter flag. Line-bounded regex matching searches for alternatives that do not cross lines.
Search scopes and filename search
crates/fff-mcp/src/scope.rs, crates/fff-mcp/src/file_search.rs, crates/fff-mcp/src/server.rs, crates/fff-mcp/src/main.rs, crates/fff-mcp/Cargo.toml
MCP adds path, glob, and hidden-file scopes, plus fuzzy, glob, and regex filename search modes with filters and pagination.
Grep modes, scope, and suggestions
crates/fff-mcp/src/server.rs
Grep applies scope and pattern modes, context options, and result limits. Empty searches can return broader source excerpts or filename suggestions.
Pagination and result formatting
crates/fff-mcp/src/cursor.rs, crates/fff-mcp/src/output.rs, crates/fff-mcp/src/server.rs
Cursors track match-level progress. Output merges context rows, budgets definition expansion, and emits continuation cursors when results remain.
Search documentation and benchmark material
README.md, crates/fff-mcp/src/instructions.md, scripts/analyze-results.py, scripts/benchmark-claude.sh, _typos.toml
Documentation describes search modes, scopes, fallback behavior, pagination, and benchmark results. The two benchmark scripts are removed. The spelling dictionary adds ful.

Spell check fails. Fix it.

The typos job fails at Line 2499 and Line 2508 because of "Nedle". No marker. Every other Nedle in this file has // spellchecker:disable-line. These two don't. The job also fails at Line 1872, which is outside this diff. Its marker sits on Line 1873, which is the wrong line, probably after a rustfmt pass. Put the marker on the same line as the string.

Spell check still fails. You fix it.

The "Nedle" strings at Line 2733 and Line 2742 have no // spellchecker:disable-line marker. The typos job flags both lines. Line 2069 has the same problem; it is outside this diff. Put the marker on the same line as the string.

multi_grep no longer prints the auto-collected context, explicit context rows share a budget while every matching line stays visible, and a page that overflows keeps detail for the matches already shown.
A cursor now remembers which file its match offset belongs to, so an edit between pages cannot skip matches from later files or return an empty page.
… hidden path

Scope patterns now disable core's literal retry, which dropped them, and the MCP retry keeps them instead. A singular path into a hidden directory overrides hidden:false like paths does, and the overflow note counts only matches that lost a definition body.
…or explicit page sizes

Typo suggestions measure the matched span against the query with its separators, so get_ful_help suggests get_full_help again. An explicit maxResults returns matching lines without the automatic surrounding source, and glob-only file searches are no longer labelled approximate.
… shrunken cursor files

Grep and multi_grep pages stop at 200 matches. When the file an in-file cursor resumes has fewer matches than before, the page is searched again with the offset that still applies, so no later file is skipped.
…and limit the parent tie-break to exact names

🌐 Web query:

globset 0.4.18 nested alternates braces zlob 1.6.5 brace glob support official source

💡 Result:

- **`globset 0.4.18`: nested brace alternates are not supported.** The version’s glob documentation describes `{a,b}` alternation and explicitly says nesting is not allowed. So a pattern like `{{a,b},{c,d}}` is unsupported. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/globset/latest/globset/?utm_source=openai))
- **`zlob 1.6.5`: brace alternation is supported when enabled** with `ZLOB_BRACE` (included in `ZLOB_RECOMMENDED`). Its official examples show brace patterns, but don’t establish whether *nested* alternates work. So I can confirm brace support, but not nested-brace support for that exact version from the available 1.6.5 source. ([github.com](https://github.com/dmtrKovalenko/zlob?utm_source=openai))

**Bottom line:** `globset 0.4.18`—no nested braces; `zlob 1.6.5`—braces supported, nesting remains unverified.

The versioned source is available on [docs.rs](https://docs.rs/crate/globset/0.4.18/source/src/glob.rs); look for `NestedAlternates` and the error string `nested alternate groups are not allowed`. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/crate/globset/latest/source/src/?utm_source=openai))

It’s raised when an alternate group is nested inside another—for example, `{{a,b},{c,d}}`. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/globset/latest/globset/enum.ErrorKind.html?utm_source=openai))

Flatten brace alternatives before adding wrappers.

globset 0.4.18 rejects nested alternate groups. !*.{ts,tsx} becomes {**/*.{ts,tsx},**/*.{ts,tsx}/**} and returns invalid_params. Mixed includes fail when alternatives adds another brace group.

Expand brace alternatives before adding descendant or exclusion wrappers. Keep all include variants in the existing flat OR group. Emit one Not(Glob(...)) constraint per excluded variant. MCP validation fails before zlob runs.

Review comment at @crates/fff-mcp/src/scope.rs around lines 81 - 93:
Update the pattern handling in the scope-building logic so brace alternatives
are expanded before `descendant_glob` or exclusion wrappers are applied,
avoiding nested alternate groups rejected by globset. Keep expanded include
variants in the existing flat OR group, and emit a separate `Not(Glob(...))`
constraint for each excluded variant.
