Indexing reads the first 4 KiB of each .blp file before it marks the file as binary. GTK Blueprint UI files are text, so grep finds them again. Binary .blp textures stay excluded.

Search in Ghostty Before After
tooltip in *.blp 0 matches (21 Blueprint files skipped) Same files as rg (17 matches in 5 files)
A .blp file that contains NUL bytes Binary by extension Binary by content

The extension list stays a fast path for formats that are always binary. The public is_known_binary_extension still returns true for .blp, so its callers see no change; only indexing adds the content check for that extension.

Stacked on #930.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Text files with the .blp extension can now be searched instead of being automatically treated as binary.
    • Files with ambiguous names are classified based on their contents, so binary files continue to be recognized as binary during searching and collection. Known binary extensions continue to be recognized as binary without content checks.

📝 Walkthrough

.blp files are classified by content when their names are ambiguous. File constructors and the walker use this classification. A regression test checks text search and binary classification.

Changes: .blp file detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Content-aware file classification
crates/fff-core/src/file_picker.rs
File constructors classify ambiguous .blp files by reading up to 4096 bytes. The public extension helper still lists .blp as binary.
Walker classification and regression test
crates/fff-core/src/walk/zlob.rs, crates/fff-core/src/file_picker.rs
The walker checks content for ambiguous binary names. A regression test checks that grep returns the text .blp file and distinguishes it from a binary texture.

Recompute the binary flag when a watched file changes.

When a binary .blp file becomes NUL-free Blueprint text, handle_file_modify checks if !file.is_binary() before calling detect_binary_per_byte. The existing true flag therefore remains unchanged, and grep continues to exclude the file. Recompute the classification on modification, including resetting the flag to false when no NUL byte is found.

GTK Blueprint UI files share the .blp extension with a binary texture format, so the extension alone no longer hides them from grep.
Blueprint .blp files are classified by their first 4 KiB during the scan, so grep never returns a binary texture while the post-scan sniff is still running.

Check ambiguous .BLP names before the extension gate.

Both classifiers require a case-sensitive extension match before reaching the case-insensitive ambiguity check. A NUL-containing texture.BLP is therefore marked as searchable without a content check.
