Obtain security review before landing credential forwarding
Before landing this commit, obtain the required explicit security review: this new shared transport forwards caller authorization/account headers and can substitute pooled access tokens, while the commit verification explicitly leaves security sign-off outstanding. The reviewer should validate that the canonical-destination check and native-compaction fallback paths cannot send credentials to a custom gateway; repository policy treats credential and token-handling changes without that review as release blockers.

behavior, and credential-forwarding warning in each locale.
Review comments at @src/adapters/openai-responses/passthrough.ts:
- Line 495: Add the missing CODEX_FORWARD_BASE_URL import from the existing
openai-tiers-destination module so the projection condition can resolve the
symbol.
Review comments at @src/providers/openai-tiers-destination.ts:
- Around line 86-90: Update supportsNativeResponsesCompactionTrigger and the
native-compaction capability checks to use the resolved model wire provider,
matching the adapter selected by request-transport.ts. Ensure native support is
true only when the resolved adapter is openai-responses, so modelAdapters
overrides cannot route a different wire through native compaction handling.
Review comments at @src/responses/reasoning-retention.ts:
- Around line 133-144: Replace the synchronous filesystem calls in
applyReasoningRetention with fs.promises operations, preserving exclusive `"wx"`
creation and best-effort cleanup; use the file handle’s writeFile and close
methods. Make applyReasoningRetention and prepareCompactionRetention async, and
await the retention operation in prepareCompactionRetention and its
already-async caller in core-pipeline.ts.
Review comments at @src/server/management/native-reasoning-retention-routes.ts:
- Line 31: Update the partial PUT merge in the native reasoning retention route
to validate the existing block with nativeReasoningRetentionSchema before
reusing it. Merge parsed.data with the validated existing data when valid;
otherwise merge from an empty object so malformed fields are not persisted. Add
a test in the existing server native reasoning retention test covering a partial
PUT over a malformed block.
Review comments at @src/server/responses/account-change-state.ts:
- Around line 265-266: Set the account-change encrypted-content strip policy
before `scrubUnportableConversationStateInPlace` can return early, preserving
reasoning content only when `preserveReasoningEncryptedContent` is true. Apply
the same policy to canonical compact outbound sanitization of `compactBody`, and
add a regression test for default-off retention with issuer-only encrypted
reasoning.
Review comments at @src/server/responses/compact.ts:
- Around line 1754-1756: Update the cleanup in handleResponsesCompact’s finally
block so an rmSync failure cannot replace the pending response; keep archive
removal best-effort by swallowing cleanup errors. Apply the same behavior to
prepareCompactionRetention’s dispose method.
- Around line 981-992: Update the `_reasoningReplayScope` assignment in the
gateway replay parsing flow to include the resolved `clientPrincipalId`
alongside `clientThreadId`. Use the existing `resolveContextPrincipal` inputs
(`req`, `config`, and `admission`) so gateway replay state uses the same
principal identity as the ordinary Responses path.
Review comments at @src/server/responses/compaction-retention.ts:
- Around line 23-26: In prepareCompactionRetention, replace the spread of
config.reasoningRetention with explicit maxContextPercent and maxTokens fields
when calling applyReasoningRetention. Preserve the locally constructed
archiveDir and contextWindow so extra keys on unschematized config objects
cannot override them.
Review comments at
@tests/responses/native-compaction-gateway-credentials.test.ts:
- Around line 113-119: Wrap the calls to handleResponsesCompact and
response.text() in a try/finally in the test, and restore the
providerCodexAccountMode spy in the finally block so it is restored even if
either call rejects.

## Native reasoning retention
The dashboard overview exposes two independent opt-ins: retain reasoning when switching models, and retain it when switching accounts. Both default off. The same policy can be saved in `config.json`:

Evaluate native compaction capabilities against the resolved model wire.
route.provider is built from the provider-level configuration, while request-transport.ts resolves modelAdapters separately before creating the adapter. The native compaction predicates still inspect route.provider directly.
With adapter: "openai-responses", supportsNativeCompactionTrigger: true, and modelAdapters: { "some-model": "openai-chat" }:
request-sidecar-auth.tstreats the compaction trigger as native.core-pipeline.tsskips routed compaction retention.compaction-recovery.tstreats the route as native v2.- The transport uses the resolved
openai-chatadapter instead. - The translated request can therefore bypass routed compaction shaping and fail to produce the expected compaction result.
compact.tshas the same mismatch and can send a Chat-wire model through the native/responses/compactbranch.
Resolve the final wire provider before evaluating native compaction capabilities. Pass that resolved provider to both predicates, or centralize the resolution in a shared layer and use the result consistently for capability checks and adapter selection. Native support must require the resolved adapter to be openai-responses.

Update supportsNativeResponsesCompactionTrigger and the native-compaction
capability checks to use the resolved model wire provider, matching the adapter
selected by request-transport.ts. Ensure native support is true only when the
resolved adapter is openai-responses, so modelAdapters overrides cannot route a
different wire through native compaction handling.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Synchronous archive I/O runs on the request path.
applyReasoningRetention calls mkdirSync, openSync, writeFileSync, and closeSync on the request path. prepareCompactionRetention in src/server/responses/compaction-retention.ts invokes it while it handles a routed compaction request. An archive can be as large as the inbound body limit, which is 256–512 MiB. Writing that much synchronously blocks the Bun event loop and stalls every other in-flight request. A retrieved learning advises against synchronous fs calls in request-handling code.
The wx exclusive-open ownership semantics are correct. The issue is only that the calls block.
To fix this, move to fs.promises (mkdir, open(path, "wx", 0o600), handle.writeFile, handle.close). Then make applyReasoningRetention and prepareCompactionRetention async. The caller in core-pipeline.ts is already async.
Based on learnings: "avoid synchronous fs functions (e.g., readFileSync, existsSync, writeFileSync) in server-side/request-handling code paths."

Arm account-change stripping before continuation scrubbing.
When canPortConversationState rejects encrypted reasoning, scrubUnportableConversationStateInPlace only removes continuation fields. An issuer-only body therefore returns before the strip flags are assigned.
This is reachable in canonical compact requests. The compact callers omit parsed, and the canonical compact path sends compactBody directly without applying those flags. Default-off retention can therefore forward account-bound ciphertext to the alternate account.
Set the strip policy when account change makes the state non-portable, before the continuation scrub. Preserve encrypted reasoning only when preserveReasoningEncryptedContent === true. Apply the same policy to compact outbound sanitization, and add a default-off issuer-only regression case.

Include clientPrincipalId in the gateway replay scope.
When an authenticated gateway request has a principal, construct _reasoningReplayScope with both the client thread and the resolved principal. The current scope contains only clientThreadId, so replay state can use a different identity from the ordinary Responses path. This can allow reasoning ciphertext from one credential to reach another and can prevent the next ordinary turn from reading the identity committed by the gateway turn.

Do not let a failed archive cleanup override the compact response.
rmSync(..., { force: true }) ignores only ENOENT. Other errors still throw, for example EPERM or EBUSY on Windows when a scanner holds the file. An exception thrown from this finally block replaces the pending return. A clean 502 such as "compaction turn produced an empty summary" then becomes an unhandled throw from handleResponsesCompact.
structure/transports/responses-failover.md Line 339 states that "filesystem cleanup failure can leave provisional files". The documented behavior is to tolerate the failure, not to surface it. Wrap the call so that cleanup stays best-effort. prepareCompactionRetention's dispose in src/server/responses/compaction-retention.ts has the same pattern.

Verify that the spread of config.reasoningRetention does not override archiveDir or contextWindow.
Line 25 spreads ...config.reasoningRetention after archiveDir and contextWindow. Today reasoningRetentionSchema is strict and allows only enabled, maxContextPercent, and maxTokens, so the spread is harmless.
However, prepareCompactionRetention reads config directly, and some config objects are built without the schema. Tests use as unknown as OcxConfig. In that case, an extra key such as archiveDir or now would redirect archive writes. Pass only the two limit fields so the archive path cannot be overridden.

Restore the providerCodexAccountMode spy in a finally block.
modeSpy.mockRestore() runs only after handleResponsesCompact and response.text() resolve. If either call rejects, the spy stays installed on the shared registry module. Every later test in the same Bun worker then routes gw as "pool". The cause of those later failures is hard to trace. The afterEach hook does not restore the spy.

Assert the archive path in the returned notice item.
The test currently checks the archive path and [reasoning retention notice] as independent serialized substrings. It can pass if the returned notice omits the path that users need to retrieve the archive. The direct helper test covers appendRetentionNotice, but not this routed handler response.

A separate integration fix makes readable retention use the same native-v2 capability predicate as dispatch, so opted-in gateways preserve their native input/protocol and create no local retention archive. The native-v2 regression covers canonical and gateway routes. Follow-up review restored the canonical destination import used by hosted-search projection, enabled retention explicitly in its default-off regression fixtures, and preserved native reasoning input/no-archive behavior after a canonical v1 endpoint returns 404. Replay-unsafe fixtures preserve the adapter's explicit 400 rejection while retaining EOF 502 and the no-resend assertions. Conflict resolution also keeps dev's Google metadata scrub, routed compact handoff metadata, checkpoint framing, new configuration fields, and both test inventories.
The coordinator owns merge and source closure. Explicit security review/sponsorship remains a maintainer decision: this bundle changes editor capability policy and adds a retention management route. Original review receipts are historical, not a new independent review of this union. Archive files have no aggregate quota or expiry; live cross-account ciphertext reuse and hosted-search backend acceptance are not established by fixture tests.
Source screenshots reused as requested; no screenshots are committed to this branch. These show the source implementations, not a new browser session on the bundle. The readable-retention screenshot predates its current Advanced settings placement.
Verification
Local tests, typechecks, builds, lint, and dependency execution were NOT RUN by user rule. Project test, typecheck and build commands run only on lidge. The exact-head hosted CI run is not all green: all four backend test shards pass, but
gatesfails on four GUI source-layout assertions (details below); the currentenforce-targetrun is cancelled.Refreshed pushed head:

Resolved conflicts insrc/server/responses/compact.ts,structure/config.md,structure/providers-and-adapters.md,scripts/test-layout/layout.json, andtests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json.The refresh preserves dev's API-key round-robin, cooldown and pacing readmission alongside gateway-native compaction, credential separation and replay provenance. Final keyed gateway dispatch keeps its custom Responses path and transport headers after reselection, and rebuilds replay sanitization against the serving selection. Two added cases in
tests/responses/compact-key-selection.test.tscover initial gateway dispatch and queued reselection; all existing compact key-selection cases remain passing.RL6b-b0b7a09-focusRL6b-b0b7a09dev-c03eafddev-c03eafdCommands:

The exact focused argument list is in~/ocx-lane/logs/RL6b-b0b7a09-focus.summary. Completed final comparison:ssh lidge '~/bin/ocx-lane-cmp.sh RL6b-b0b7a09 dev-c03eafd'reports 0 new failures, 0 baseline failures now passing/absent, zero typecheck errors on either head, and no missing baseline test groups. All 29 failing test names match the completed baseline. This is a clean baseline-relative result, not an all-green full suite. Full-run evidence is in~/ocx-lane/logs/RL6b-b0b7a09.summary,.log, and.log.typecheck. The earlier4ae49360bbaseline is superseded for this refresh. The first refresh run at
b015298passed typecheck and 1,009 tests but failed the two added gateway fixtures because the reservedopenai-apikeyname correctly fixes its endpoint to OpenAI. The final fixture uses a custom provider name, and the 31-file rerun passes. A setup-only focused launch interrupted by the full-run launch was relaunched; only the completed final summary above is passing evidence.Static union inspection and remote guards: no existing file-size cap raised or exceeded; all 16 added backend test files are registered in both inventories; all 11 locale catalogs carry the same 21 retention keys; structure ownership/index and line budgets pass (
structure/config.mdis at 600/600 lines); CLI capabilities andskills/ocxsurface are unchanged.git diff origin/dev...HEAD --checkpasses.Hosted GUI evidence: the exact-head gates job reports 3,413 pass / 4 fail across 349 files. All four failures are in
gui/tests/models-keep-native-v1-placement.test.ts(right-column row, alignment, narrow stack, and tooltip placement). The test and its two source inputs,gui/src/pages/Models.tsxandgui/src/styles-models-workspace.css, are byte-identical toc03eafd46b; this lane did not run a GUI baseline to claim a runtime comparison. This source-oracle mismatch is outside the compaction refresh edits and remains a coordinator integration judgment. The two new retention panel suites are not among the failures. No hosted checks were rerun by this lane. These results are remote fixture/build checks, not live backend, cross-account, or GUI/browser acceptance. GUI interaction tests and Windows/mini union validation were not run by this lane. Maintainer security review/sponsorship remains outstanding. The coordinator owns merge and source closure.
