feat(ui): add session-local diagnostics history - #1181
Add a troubleshooting Diagnostics pane (ui.pane.diagnosticLog), separate from the unchanged performance-oriented Diagnostic Monitor (ui.pane.diagnostics).
Place the pane in View › Windows because it controls workspace visibility. It opens without layer context; Command Search, the status-bar button, and the latest brief notice reach the same pane. Existing performance-monitor access remains under Help › Performance.
Retain the last 500 session-local events while the pane is closed, with UTC timestamps, severity, source, expandable technical details, severity/network filters, filtered Copy diagnostics, and Clear. Preserve history across pane reopening and project changes without saving it in .rgis files.
Reuse session notice and command-failure paths, including failures rejected before execution and UI-only failures, without duplicating errors already reported by engine commands.
Capture background tile, service, and remote-data request failures made through the shared transport (the tile/data/service fetchers, downloads, and remote-layer reads) with available URL, method, observed status, and duration. Requests a module makes with its own client (ArcGIS sign-in, Python environment downloads) report failures through their own errors, which Diagnostics records as notices. Keep native connection/timeout distinctions; do not invent a status or cause for opaque browser failures.
Sanitize before retention, display, or copy. Omit URL user information, queries/fragments, credential fields, and structured payloads conservatively; bound individual messages/details. Carry weak request ownership through native queues, render/data workers, and browser callbacks so concurrent sessions do not receive each other's events.
Update the user guide, privacy documentation, and architecture documentation. No new dependencies or third-party code/assets.
Notices are redacted with the same rules as the history: a notice is bounded to 8 KiB (an ellipsis marks the cut), and one over 16 KiB is omitted whole so a clipped credential can't survive. The history's record copy is bounded further, to 2 KiB, in push.
Testing
Final-source cargo xtask ci passed: formatting, workspace clippy (-D warnings), all workspace test targets, and architecture layers. The UI smoke target passed 94/94, including the formerly failing exhausted-undo shortcut.
Diagnostics UI interaction regression: status-notice access, errors/warnings/info filters, clipboard contents and secret redaction, closed-pane retention, clearing, and performance-monitor access passed. The duplicate-error-notice regression also passed.
Focused shortcut smoke tests passed: a_shortcut_that_cannot_run_says_why (including exhausted undo and redo) and ctrl_shift_z_redoes_rather_than_undoing. Unavailable history shortcuts do not dispatch; genuine dispatched command failures still enter Diagnostics.
Routine tile 404s no longer create a network record each: the caller's expected statuses reach RequestDiagnostics through both transports (the installed browser fetcher receives them via set_fetcher_omitting). Only map tiles omit 404: tile layers ask the cache through cache::get_tile (XYZ and vector tiles, WMTS matrix tiles, terrain tiles). cache::get (single-image layers, layout pictures, sprite sheets, styles and TileJSON), WMS pictures, remote-range reads and downloads record every failure, on the desktop and in the browser alike. Each server's omission is said once per history (reset by Clear), keyed by origin, or by scheme and host for s3://, and naming the address without its markers. Past 64 servers, one note says further servers aren't listed, and it shows under the Network filter. These notes stay in the Diagnostics history on purpose and don't go through Session::notify: they describe expected answers, and the status bar, CLI and Python would otherwise get one notice per source while panning. Zarr's absence probes omit 404/403 while real chunk failures (500, timeout) still record with address, status and duration, and keep the large-file timeout hint. Covered by network_diagnostics_skip_routine_tile_404s_and_keep_other_statuses, fetches_through_the_fetcher_once and the Zarr suite.
Redaction rules: name=value is a field however its value is shaped (Password=my secret redacts whole); at the start of a line name: value is too (Password: correct horse), while mid-line it keeps the single-token rule so prose survives. A bare name word line redacts only when the word looks like a credential (a digit, 16+ characters, or punctuation other than a sentence's ending), so "Token refreshed." keeps its words. A line-start Basic needs a word shaped like base64 after it ("Basic settings were saved" keeps). A quoted secret name before a space is a field only when one of the next two words looks like a credential ("Column 'key' is missing" keeps). Bearer/Basic tokens are removed wherever they follow a field, quoted ones whole. A secret-named name=value in a URL path has its value redacted. An omitted URL query is said ([query omitted]) and the reason after it keeps, unless a pair in it named a secret ([query and the rest omitted]). An address with nothing to take out stays as written. A refused HEAD keeps its response headers in the details.
Local HTTP/connection/timeout tests cover observed metadata, cancellation, session isolation, bounded retention, and redaction. Credential detection no longer treats residual %/\ as a secret name, excludes Windows path atoms like POSIX paths, and redacts a named field only when its value is a single token, quoted, or an HTTP credential header, with a bare credential line redacted only where a text line begins. RustGIS's own notices therefore keep their words ("the saved password is missing", "its password: right-click the connection"), ordinary percentages, absolute Windows paths, and bracketed names survive ("Exported /data/a[1].png", "Layer {2020} failed", "Key column 'id' is missing"), while credential fields, Bearer <token> values, User ID= values, bare credential lines and URL user-info are still redacted. The KML regression verifies that a noncredential input path containing secret remains useful notice context, including overlays without a picture or box, and that command-source attribution restores after a caught panic.
pre-commit run --all-files passed every hook.
Final-source cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passed. A trunk build bundle was opened and exercised in Chromium before the later redaction and shortcut fixes; screenshots below show that earlier interactive run.
Rendered and inspected the native UI through the repository's ui_shot workflow at 1366 × 900, including View-ribbon access, HTTP 503 details, connection failures, all requested filters, reopening, Clear, and the separate performance monitor.
Exercised the browser UI using Chromium's WebGL software renderer: background tile/data HTTP and opaque connection failures captured while closed, expanded details, filtering, clearing, and status-bar access. Inspected the Copy diagnostics report for signed-query secret redaction; clipboard automation initially received NotAllowedError and required a permission grant before the successful copy/read check. A rebuilt bundle retained one UI-only error and reopened the pane from its status notice. The existing performance metrics remained accessible.
Local checks used debug symbols and incremental compilation disabled to keep generated artifacts smaller. Hardware-WebGPU visual verification was not performed.

Native screenshots use the repository's headless UI renderer; browser screenshots show the running WebAssembly application.

Summary
Diagnostic history, capture, and redaction crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs, crates/data/src/lib.rs
The data crate adds bounded diagnostic records, filters, capture scopes, reports, and redaction. Tests cover history limits, capture ownership, filters, and sanitization.
Session notice recording and attribution crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/{layout.rs,zarr.rs}, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Sessions record notices and command errors with severity and source attribution. Selected messages now use warning severity. Tests cover attribution, retention, and rollback behavior.
Native and browser network failure recording crates/tiles/src/cache.rs, apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs
Request paths record failed-request details, with selected statuses omitted. Callbacks and network workers carry diagnostic captures. Tests cover failure classification and capture attribution.
Background workers enter the initiating diagnostics capture. Tile callers use get_tile where 404 responses are treated as expected omissions.
Diagnostics pane and access points crates/ui-egui/src/{diagnosticlog.rs,lib.rs,panes.rs,chrome.rs,ribbon.rs}, crates/ui-egui/tests/{diagnostics.rs,smoke.rs}, docs/{architecture.md,privacy.md,user-guide/index.md}
The UI adds a pane for viewing, filtering, copying, and clearing diagnostics. The status bar and View ribbon provide access. Tests and documentation describe pane behavior and diagnostic handling.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 3bb3c
The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: some messages can be over-redacted, and tile-request handling can suppress or crowd out useful diagnostics. These concerns affect troubleshooting visibility rather than persisted project data.

A rabbit logs each warning bright, Then tucks the secret strings from sight. With filters, notes, and copy near, It keeps the session record clear. One hop to Diagnostics, all in view, Then clears the trail when asked to do.
User-visible notices are cut at the first {, [ or <.Session::notify/warn now store redacted text in Notice.text, and redact replaces everything from such a character onward with [structured content omitted]. For example, Exported /data/a[1].png shows as Exported /data/a[structured content omitted]. This contradicts the PR's claim that notices keep their words. Confidence: high. (crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:364)
A notice that starts with a credential-like word is replaced wholesale by [REDACTED]. Words such as Key, Token, Basic or Authentication followed by a space trigger the bare-credential rule, so Key column 'id' is missing would be lost. No current notify/warn/Err call site starts this way, so it is latent. Confidence: medium. (crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:435)
Performance
Routine tile 404s are recorded as Error network failures. The fetch_answer comment says tile refusals are routine, but every Err is recorded. A basemap with gaps can evict real failures from the 500-record cap, and while the pane is open each new record re-clones the history on every repaint. Confidence: medium-high. (crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:1400)
Security
Credentials embedded in URL paths are not stripped. Only userinfo, query and fragment are removed, so a path-embedded API key would be retained. Confidence: low, since this is a design limit the privacy doc only partly describes.
Quality
Session::run uses catch_unwind and resume_unwind only to restore diagnostic_source. A drop guard would do the same without the catch and rethrow. Confidence: high. (crates/engine/src/lib.rs:994)
Notice text is redacted twice:notice() redacts, then History::push redacts again through bounded. The result is idempotent, but the work is duplicated. Confidence: high.
Nits:
crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs:640: parenthesise the undo/redo condition (inline suggestion posted).
Missing blank line before quoted_and_adversarial_credential_fields_are_omitted in crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs.
Double blank lines in docs/privacy.md and docs/user-guide/index.md.
The OnceLock to LazyLock change in tiles/cache.rsqueue() is unrelated churn.
kml_ground_overlays_become_rasters drops the first-session notice assertion and weakens the second to contains("../secret.png"). Confidence: low.
AGENTS.md
Translation policy:tl!(record.source.as_str()) in crates/ui-egui/src/diagnosticlog.rs passes command ids through the translation catalog, and docs/i18n.md says command ids are never translated. The strings in kind are also built as match-arm literals passed to tl!, which the catalog workflow may not extract. Confidence: medium.
Clock: the native branch of timestamp_ms uses std::time::SystemTime, and the wasm fallback returns 0 unless a clock has been installed. AGENTS.md asks for web_time. The injected clock avoids the dependency, so this is a low-severity note.
Otherwise the new non-test code avoids unwrap/expect/panic, the wasm paths use Capture/web_time, and strings in the new UI are wrapped in tl!/i18n::fmt.
Nothing was approved, merged or modified. I did not run the test suite, since I have no shell access here. The findings above come from reading the diff and the surrounding code.

@deniial00 One thing to plan for alongside #947: both PRs wrap Session::run the same way. The body becomes run_command, and a new wrapper with its own catch_unwind goes around it. Whichever lands second will conflict. #947 looks close to merging, so the simplest route may be to rebase on it once it lands and put the diagnostics capture inside its wrapper, so each command is wrapped once.
Five findings are posted inline. Two more fall in files this PR does not touch, so they could not be posted inline and are listed here instead. I did not run the test suite, so the claims below rest on reading the code.
Bugs
Browser tile 404s are recorded in the history.fetch_bytes in apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs has no 404 rule, while the native path skips them. This is the flooding the PR says it prevents. Confidence: high. (inline)
The 404 rule keys on the detail flag, not on tile-ness. Non-tile service and remote 404s are dropped too, and the test named "tile 404s" never checks the URL. Confidence: medium. (inline)
Zarr chunk failures lose their network record. The _quiet scope wraps every download_blocking result, so a 503 or timeout appears only as a flattened error string. Confidence: medium. (inline)
CLI prints some failures twice (apps/rustgis-cli/src/main.rs:98, not in this PR's changed files). The dedupe compares the raw error with the redacted notice, so any error that redaction changes is printed twice. Confidence: medium-high.
STAC catalog walk fetches with no captured owner (crates/tiles/src/stac/catalog.rs:453, not in this PR's changed files). Its threads have an empty thread-local, so catalog failures never reach the history. crates/map/src/source.rs:978 has the same gap; I did not confirm that path issues HTTP. Confidence: medium.
Security
Unquoted key=value secrets with a space are not redacted.redact("Server=db;Password=my secret") returns the input unchanged. Confidence: medium-high. (inline)
Possible residue from Bearer tokens. Token parsing stops at separators such as = and ;, so server: Bearer abc=def keeps =def. Confidence: low.
Performance
No significant findings. records() clones up to 500 records of up to 8 KiB each on every generation change while the pane is open. This is acceptable but could be cheaper.
Quality
Notice text is replaced or cut, and the cut is silent.notice() uses redact_message, which returns [oversized diagnostic omitted] above 16 KiB and truncates at 2 KiB. Before this PR, long notices appeared in full. Confidence: medium-low. (inline)
The clock fallback uses std::time::SystemTime. AGENTS.md says to use web_time. rustgis-data does not depend on web_time, and the wasm fallback silently records timestamps of 0 when no clock is installed. Confidence: low.
A KML test was weakened. The full notice assertion for Far became a bare ../secret.png match, and the first session's "without a picture or a box" assertion was removed. Confidence: medium.
Nits.docs/privacy.md has an extra blank line before "## Online services". crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs has no blank line between two test functions. opens_structured slices name[at..] directly where AGENTS.md prefers get(). tl! is applied to command ids, which AGENTS.md says are never translated.
AGENTS.md
Checked: no unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code; the wasm paths are gated correctly; the layering is preserved (tiles depends on data, not the reverse); no new dependency; and every failure path I traced reports through notify or warn.
Non-compliant: the std::time fallback noted above. Also, the Zarr and STAC captures are gaps against the PR's stated capture requirement.

Update the non-2xx response branch in post_answer to return refused(&mut resp)
instead of Failure::without_answer, preserving response headers in the failure

Done as you suggested in your comment: the branch is rebased onto #947 — Session::run is wrapped once, and the session log's logging and the Diagnostics capture compose inside that single wrapper, with no second catch_unwind around it (443b16b).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Silent failure for misconfigured tile layers (AGENTS.md "Never silent"). Every raster tile's 404 is now omitted from the history, and warp.rs:117 already treats a raster tile 404 as "left clear" with no error set. So an XYZ template with a wrong path produces a blank map with no notice and no diagnostic entry, which is exactly the case this pane is for.
Suggest counting the omitted tile 404s per session and reporting one notice per kind with a count (e.g. "N tile requests were not found (first:
)"), so the omission is said rather than silent.
Confidence: medium (about 0.6). I did not run the app to confirm the blank-map behaviour end to end.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 65939e5: an omitted absence is now said once per session — one bounded Warning record ("expected absences are omitted from this history: the first was HTTP 404 for …"), so a misconfigured tile source isn't silent, while the history stays free of the per-tile flood; later absences add nothing.

Unrelated scope: removes the #1159known marks. This PR is about diagnostics, but it drops the known markers for three buffer cases (long line, parcels 1 km, parcels -2 km). The PR body never mentions buffer geometry, and the head commit is titled "from #1220". Those cases now assert at tolerance 0.001, but the PR doesn't say they pass. Note that generate.py still marks the points, stations and roads buffer cases as #1159.
Suggest splitting this into its own PR, or stating in the description that buffer outlines were fixed and the test run passes.

Removed in 65939e5: the marks change is gone from this PR — it is #1220's, already merged to main; the branch is rebased onto main with it and its diff no longer touches the reference cases.

Possible quadratic time on long bracket runs.opens_structured calls trim_start_matches over the whole run of {/[ from the current position. redact calls it at every [ or {, so a 16 KiB run of [ costs about 134M character checks. Session::notice and History::push each run redact on the same text, which doubles it.
Suggest looking at the run once, or capping how far the trim scans. Nothing crashes, so this is a performance nit.
Confidence: low (about 0.4). I did not benchmark it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 65939e5: the trim scans a bounded 64-character window, so a long run of brackets costs the window per bracket, not a quadratic sweep of the whole text.
Quoted secret-looking names followed by whitespace drop the rest of the message. For example, Column 'key' is missing becomes Column [REDACTED], and the same happens to names containing body, credential or password. Posted inline at crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:499. Confidence: high.
A line starting with Basic is redacted whatever follows, so Basic settings were saved becomes [REDACTED]. Token refreshed. also still redacts, because the punctuation rule added in 55dfd4a keeps the case the earlier thread named. Posted inline at diagnostics.rs:587. Confidence: high.
The omission keys on Want::Image, so non-tile 404s are treated as expected. These include single-image layers, layout pictures and sprite sheets, which leave no per-request record. Posted inline at crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:509. Confidence: medium-high.
Security
No new findings. Credential redaction in History and Capture looks sound for the cases I traced. The earlier URL-path concern is still open (see below).
Performance
No new findings. The Diagnostics pane repaints every 500 ms while open and lays out up to 500 entries per frame. Both are minor.
Quality
The tile-404 absence note goes only into the history, so the status bar, CLI and Python never see it. This conflicts with the AGENTS.md "Never silent" rule. Posted inline at diagnostics.rs:242. Confidence: medium.
Nits, not posted: Session::run and RustGisApp::run redact the error text, and then notice() redacts it again. docs/privacy.md has a doubled blank line before "Online services". The snapshot take()/put-back pattern in diagnosticlog::show is hard to follow.
AGENTS.md
The new strings in the data layer (absence notes, "Network", "Application") aren't translatable. That matches how the engine's existing notices are written, so I'm not raising it.
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code. The url dependency is already in crates/data.
I checked the wasm gating of the new download_blocking_expecting and the zarr call site, and both are non-wasm. The build should hold.
Prior threads
I left alone 11 concerns that earlier threads already raised and that are still unanswered and unchanged: the web plugin-restore scope, the absence_said lock split, the S3 origin key, the URL-path credentials, and the seven others on the same code. Several earlier threads were answered and fixed, and I did not re-raise those. The punctuation case is the only one I re-raised, because the 55dfd4a change still keeps it.

Security (confidence: medium, a documented trade-off): a mid-line name: value with a multi-word value is kept.redact("connection failed; password: correct horse battery") returns the input unchanged, because the value has whitespace and the text does not start a line. The notice, the history and Copy diagnostics then keep the secret. The prose test (its password: right-click the connection …) needs this shape to keep its words, so I would not tighten the rule. I'd document the limit in docs/privacy.md and the user guide, since both say credential fields are omitted "conservatively". Cases like key=value are different: the = arm already covers them.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Left for the release quality pass: the limit is real and the prose test needs that shape, so the rule stays; documenting it in docs/privacy.md and the user guide is wording.
crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:671: a bare word@ drops the rest of the message. redact("Exported to alice@example.org: 3 rows") returns Exported to [address omitted], which also affects names like a@2x.png. Inline comment with a one-line fix. Confidence: high on behaviour, medium on impact.
Generic = names over-redact ordinary text. The = arm treats key and body as secret names, so Invalid key=value pair in row 3 becomes Invalid [REDACTED]. Not posted inline; the fix is to drop key and body from the = rule. Confidence: medium.
A User ID: or User ID= prefix in prose truncates the notice, e.g. User ID: 42 is missing becomes [REDACTED]. Confidence: medium.
Security
crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:621: a mid-line name: value with a multi-word value is kept, e.g. connection failed; password: correct horse battery. This is a trade-off the prose test requires, so I recommend documenting it rather than changing the rule. Inline comment. Confidence: medium.
I checked the redaction paths for panics and unbounded work. Both look bounded: quote scanning has a budget, and get() is used for slicing. I found no new panic path in non-test code.
Performance
No new issues beyond the existing thread on re-cloning history. Per-frame filter counts over at most 500 records are cheap.
Quality
crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:110 uses std::time::SystemTime in rustgis-data, which has no web_time dependency. AGENTS.md says to use web_time. The fallback is cfg-gated and the apps install a clock, so this is a nit. Confidence: medium.
The ribbon's Diagnostics button reuses the identify icon, which may read as the Identify tool. Command search shows "Diagnostics" next to "Diagnostic Monitor". Both are naming nits.
docs/privacy.md has an extra blank line before "## Online services".
AGENTS.md
The wasm gating is consistent: download_blocking_expecting has the same cfg(not(wasm32)) as download_blocking, and the zarr fetch is gated the same way.
Layering and translatable strings look correct. The date routine cites Hinnant, so it is not copied code.
I found no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code.
Prior threads: I left about 60 earlier concerns alone. Each is either answered by the author, resolved, or outdated. I did not re-raise the notice-policy and history-only absence-note concerns, which the author has answered.

Redact positional credential values in URL paths.
578-585: Minor · Security & Privacy · Quick win
Redact positional credential values in URL paths.
path_secrets_redacted redacts only name=value path parts. A credential in a positional segment, such as /token/<value>, passes through unchanged. Failed tile requests keep that URL in the diagnostics record through network_failure, and report prints it. Redact the segment that follows a bare credential-named segment. Use the existing bare_name check so that ordinary words such as key and body do not count as credential names. A placeholder that follows such a segment is also redacted.

Update path_secrets_redacted to redact the next nonempty path segment after a
segment identified as a credential name by bare_name, while preserving existing
name=value redaction. Ensure ordinary segments that bare_name does not
recognize, such as “key” and “body,” do not trigger positional redaction.

Round 7, items from the review summary that have no thread (head d4b19f8):
Invalid key=value pair and User ID: 42 is missing redacted — kept: key= and User ID are credential fields in connection strings and URLs, and name=value being a field however it's shaped was itself a review fix. Over-redacting these is the safe side.
std::time in rustgis-data — answered in round 4: native-only cfg, and web_time would be a new dependency.
Ribbon icon reuses Identify; "Diagnostics" next to "Diagnostic Monitor" — left for the release quality pass (naming and icon are a maintainer call).
Extra blank line in docs/privacy.md — left for the release quality pass.

Assert the retained host and path in the encoded-separator cases.

Assert the retained host and path in the encoded-separator cases.
The two new assertions pass when the whole address is replaced with [address omitted]. They check only that the secret is absent. Assert the full sanitized text instead, as the earlier unencoded case does. The redaction keeps the host and path, so these tests can confirm that the context survives.

Two new findings, both posted inline. No bugs confirmed. I traced the redaction rules and the transport changes by hand and did not run the test suite.
Bugs
None new that I could confirm. I checked the Session::run scope and restore paths, the Capture lifetimes and the Zarr wasm gating (download_blocking_expecting is native-only, and its only caller is native-only too).
Security
Prefixed API and access-key names are not redacted (crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:422, confidence about 0.7). secret_name matches api_key/apikey only as whole names. MAPBOX_API_KEY=pk.hidden in a notice keeps its value, and that text reaches the status bar, history and Copy diagnostics. Suggested fix is inline.
Performance
The Diagnostics pane keeps a clone of up to 500 records (up to about 4 MB) in app.ui.diagnostic_snapshot after the pane closes. It is only released on the next open or Clear (confidence about 0.5). Not posted.
diagnosticlog::entry renders every matching record on each frame while the pane is open (confidence about 0.3). Not posted.
Quality
fetch_answer's local-file branch builds a RequestDiagnostics that is only used for sending/answered, which is wasted work.
The source strings "Network" and "Application" are repeated across diagnostics.rs and should be constants.
absence_said keys an unparseable address as "", so all such addresses share one absence note.
AGENTS.md
std::time::SystemTime in crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:110, against "Use web_time, not std::time" (confidence about 0.5). The fix is to add the workspace web-time to the data crate. Posted inline.
No unwrap, expect, panic! or unsafe in non-test code of the changed files. No new dependencies. Interface strings use tl!/tl_raw!. Layering is unchanged.
Already raised (not re-posted)
I left all 60 existing threads alone. Twenty are unresolved, eight of those are not outdated, and two of those have no reply: the WMTS 410 gap in cache.rs and the shared-slot 404 omission. I did not re-check either against the current code.
The author declined to route the absence notes through Session::notify. AGENTS.md explicitly asks for that route, so this is a maintainer call.

Assert that encoded-colon inputs leave no username or host behind.

Assert that encoded-colon inputs leave no username or host behind.
The redaction test loop checks only !clean.contains("hidden"). If a regression kept the username and host and removed only the password, the output would still pass. The guard already omits the whole field for these inputs, so this is a test gap that protects against a future regression. It does not describe a current defect.
Add a check for the encoded-colon inputs:

and preserve the existing password-redaction checks.

Bug (confidence about 0.7): one kept header can erase the rest of the failure details.redact treats a line-start name: value with a secret name as a field and then stops scanning (diagnostics.rs field rule, break at the field || bare arm). WWW-Authenticate is in KEPT_HEADERS and wwwauthenticate is a secret name, so for a 401/403 with WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="x" followed by cf-ray: … the stored details become Range: …\nserver: nginx\n[REDACTED]. The cf-ray and x-request-id lines, which this feature exists to show, are lost with no per-header marker. I traced this by hand and did not run it.
Redacting each header line on its own keeps the others intact. The bounded pass over the whole details string then sees [REDACTED] on that line and nothing to consume after it:
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Confirmed by running it: on a 401 with www-authenticate: Basic realm="tiles" followed by cf-ray and x-amzn-requestid, the stored details keep only server and [REDACTED]; redacting each header line on its own, as suggested, keeps the later lines. Left for the release quality pass: the redaction itself is correct (nothing leaks), and only the headers after WWW-Authenticate are lost.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in #1333. Each kept header is redacted on its own line. A test serves WWW-Authenticate before Retry-After, cf-ray and X-Amzn-RequestId and keeps the last three.
A WWW-Authenticate header in failure details replaces every later kept header with [REDACTED], because the line-start field rule stops the scan. Posted inline on crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:685-688, with a suggestion that redacts per header line. Confidence about 0.7.
Failed STAC catalog reads never reach Diagnostics. walk_blocking (crates/tiles/src/stac/catalog.rs:449-459) spawns scoped threads that never enter the caller's capture, and crates/engine/src/cmd/stac.rs:198 calls it from a session command. The command reports only a failed count in its JSON result, with no notice, so CLI and Python users get no record of which requests failed. Fix: take Capture::current() before the scope and call capture.enter() in each spawned closure. Confidence about 0.8.
Failed info.fileLayers requests from the layer chooser and Repair Data Source are lost. crates/ui-egui/src/layerchooser.rs:63-66 and repairsource.rs:99-102 run the command on a fresh Session, and Session::run enters that session's own history, so the records go into a discarded history. The chooser still shows the error. Fix: give the throwaway session the main history with session.diagnostics = history.clone(), where history is taken from app.session.diagnostics before the spawn. Confidence about 0.6.
Over-redaction of prose: Token 3 layers need refreshing. becomes [REDACTED], because the bare-line rule (crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:641) treats a digit-bearing next word as a credential. This loses notice text rather than leaking anything. Confidence about 0.4.
Security
No new leak found. I checked URL userinfo, query and fragment handling, path-carried secrets (including %3D), Bearer/Basic tokens, the network_failure URL, and the absence notes.
Performance
While the pane is open, each generation change makes diagnosticlog::show clone up to 500 records, and each record can carry 8 KiB of details. The earlier thread covered only routine 404s, so a stream of non-omitted 5xx or 429 failures during panning still forces the clone on most frames. Confidence about 0.3.
Quality
The [query omitted] marker (diagnostics.rs:606) is also used when only a fragment was removed, so it names the wrong part. Nit.
docs/privacy.md has a doubled blank line before ## Online services. Nit.
AGENTS.md
No unwrap, expect or panic! in non-test code, and the new UI strings use tl!.
The wasm path is clean: the zarr.rs call sits in a non-wasm function, and the cube.rs capture is inside a non-wasm function.
Not re-raised: the earlier std::time::SystemTime thread in diagnostics.rs (deferred, code unchanged).
I did not re-post any of the 63 earlier review threads; 19 are still marked unresolved.
Change size
Compared with the base branch: the whole PR against main (merge base 3dc3e3b to PR head 3bb3cd9).
A note on how failed requests are recorded, and a refactor I'll do in a follow-up pull request.
Every failed request has to make exactly one Diagnostics record, carrying what was seen along the way: the status, whether it timed out, and the duration. Rust's ? can't run code on exit, so this PR splits each request in two: a wrapper creates the RequestDiagnostics, calls the body, and records on Err. There are six such pairs:
apps/rustgis-web/src/web.rs: fetch_bytes, post_json and head, each with an _inner
What is wanted is a wrapper that sees the Result. The alternatives don't fit:
Calling failed() at each exit: fetch_bytes_inner alone has about 15, and a missed one would be a silent loss.
A Drop guard owning the RequestDiagnostics needs no unsafe, and cache.rs already uses guards (Answer, Lower). But Drop can't see the return value, and the record is built from the error (Failure::new(url, error), whose reason comes from that text). The body would have to hand the error to the guard at every exit, which brings back the missed-exit risk. Cancellation doesn't call for a guard either: failed() already skips DROPPED, the browser futures run to completion under spawn_local, and the desktop calls are blocking.
Recording where the cache gets the result back would mean parsing the status and timeout out of an error string.
What can be tidied: the same few lines (create, set omit, call, record) are repeated six times, the names are inconsistent (fetch_answer_inner but head_answer, _inner in web.rs), and the desktop wrappers use map_err where the browser ones use inspect_err. A single RequestDiagnostics::record(result) that calls failed() on Err and passes the result through would let each body become an inline block in the original function, with one way of recording. Behaviour is unchanged, so I'll open it as a follow-up pull request once this one is merged rather than push it onto the approved head.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bug / security (confidence: high on behaviour, not run): Network.url keeps URL user information.network_failure strips only the query and fragment, then path_secrets_redacted. That helper splits on /, ; and =, so https://alice:hidden@host/x.png passes through unchanged. absence_said (around line 276) has the same gap. address::check accepts user@ and user:pass@ addresses, so a tile or WMS address with credentials reaches this path. The failure then shows in the pane and in Copy diagnostics, which contradicts docs/privacy.md and the user guide, both of which say addresses omit user information. The notice text is safe, because redact rewrites userinfo there. The record's url field is not passed through redact.
Suggested fix: one helper that both call sites use, for example
/// The address a record keeps: no user information, query or fragment, and no secret in its path.fnrecord_address(address:&str) -> String{match url::Url::parse(address){Ok(mut url) => {let _ = url.set_username("");let _ = url.set_password(None);
url.set_query(None);
url.set_fragment(None);bounded(&path_secrets_redacted(url.as_str()),MAX_URL_BYTES)}Err(_) => "[address omitted]".to_string(),}}
Then absence_said can drop its manual find(['?', '#']) slicing and call record_address(url). A regression test is also missing: network_failure with https://alice:hidden@… should assert that neither alice nor hidden reaches network.url or report().

Checked by running it: network.url doesn't keep user information. Both call sites pass the address through bounded(), which runs redact, and redact rewrites an address with user info without it: network_failure with https://alice:hidden@tiles.example.org/x.png stores https://tiles.example.org/x.png, absence_said with https://bob:hidden2@… stores https://other.example.org/0/0/0.png, and neither name nor password reaches report(). Not changed. A shared record_address helper is a fair tidy-up; it's in the follow-up pull request's list (the duplicated URL cleaning).
Userinfo kept in network record URLs (crates/data/src/diagnostics.rs:302, inline comment posted). network_failure and absence_said strip only the query and fragment. An address like https://alice:hidden@host/x.png keeps its credentials in Network.url, which the pane and Copy diagnostics show. This contradicts docs/privacy.md and the user guide. The notice text is safe because redact handles userinfo there. Confidence: high on behaviour, not run.
Security
No further issues found. The redaction rules were checked by reading the code. The one credential gap I found is the userinfo case above.
Performance
No new issues. The quadratic-scan and record-cloning concerns were already raised and addressed.
Quality
Nits, left for the release quality pass: a missing blank line before #[test] in diagnostics.rs (around line 966); double blank lines before ## Online services in docs/privacy.md and before ## The ribbon in docs/user-guide/index.md.
A regression test for userinfo in network records is missing (covered in the inline comment).
AGENTS.md
No violations found in the changed code. Non-test code has no unwrap, expect or unsafe. User-visible strings use tl! or i18n::fmt. Command ids are not translated. The unwrap and unsafe checks were confirmed in the diff.
Checked, not raised
Thread spawns without a diagnostics capture (pluginsui.rs, earthaccessui.rs, plugins::registry::fetch). The PR documents that these modules report through their own errors, so I did not flag them.
The quote-scan budget in redact. I traced it and the budget cannot be exhausted for inputs at or under 16 KiB, so I dropped it.
Already raised
I left 64 earlier review threads alone and did not re-raise any of them. Several were fixed in later commits. Two were answered as deliberate: the notice path for failed commands, and the history-only absence notes.
Change size
Compared: the whole PR against main (merge base 3dc3e3b to PR head c28488a).

Summary
ui.pane.diagnosticLog), separate from the unchanged performance-oriented Diagnostic Monitor (ui.pane.diagnostics)..rgisfiles.Session::runis wrapped once, and its command logging composes with the Diagnostics capture inside.push.Testing
cargo xtask cipassed: formatting, workspace clippy (-D warnings), all workspace test targets, and architecture layers. The UI smoke target passed 94/94, including the formerly failing exhausted-undo shortcut.a_shortcut_that_cannot_run_says_why(including exhausted undo and redo) andctrl_shift_z_redoes_rather_than_undoing. Unavailable history shortcuts do not dispatch; genuine dispatched command failures still enter Diagnostics.RequestDiagnosticsthrough both transports (the installed browser fetcher receives them viaset_fetcher_omitting). Only map tiles omit 404: tile layers ask the cache throughcache::get_tile(XYZ and vector tiles, WMTS matrix tiles, terrain tiles).cache::get(single-image layers, layout pictures, sprite sheets, styles and TileJSON), WMS pictures, remote-range reads and downloads record every failure, on the desktop and in the browser alike. Each server's omission is said once per history (reset by Clear), keyed by origin, or by scheme and host fors3://, and naming the address without its markers. Past 64 servers, one note says further servers aren't listed, and it shows under the Network filter. These notes stay in the Diagnostics history on purpose and don't go throughSession::notify: they describe expected answers, and the status bar, CLI and Python would otherwise get one notice per source while panning. Zarr's absence probes omit 404/403 while real chunk failures (500, timeout) still record with address, status and duration, and keep the large-file timeout hint. Covered bynetwork_diagnostics_skip_routine_tile_404s_and_keep_other_statuses,fetches_through_the_fetcher_onceand the Zarr suite.name=valueis a field however its value is shaped (Password=my secretredacts whole); at the start of a linename: valueis too (Password: correct horse), while mid-line it keeps the single-token rule so prose survives. A barename wordline redacts only when the word looks like a credential (a digit, 16+ characters, or punctuation other than a sentence's ending), so "Token refreshed." keeps its words. A line-startBasicneeds a word shaped like base64 after it ("Basic settings were saved" keeps). A quoted secret name before a space is a field only when one of the next two words looks like a credential ("Column 'key' is missing" keeps).Bearer/Basictokens are removed wherever they follow a field, quoted ones whole. A secret-namedname=valuein a URL path has its value redacted. An omitted URL query is said ([query omitted]) and the reason after it keeps, unless a pair in it named a secret ([query and the rest omitted]). An address with nothing to take out stays as written. A refused HEAD keeps its response headers in the details.%/\as a secret name, excludes Windows path atoms like POSIX paths, and redacts a named field only when its value is a single token, quoted, or an HTTP credential header, with a bare credential line redacted only where a text line begins. RustGIS's own notices therefore keep their words ("the saved password is missing", "its password: right-click the connection"), ordinary percentages, absolute Windows paths, and bracketed names survive ("Exported /data/a[1].png", "Layer {2020} failed", "Key column 'id' is missing"), while credential fields,Bearer <token>values,User ID=values, bare credential lines and URL user-info are still redacted. The KML regression verifies that a noncredential input path containingsecretremains useful notice context, including overlays without a picture or box, and that command-source attribution restores after a caught panic.pre-commit run --all-filespassed every hook.cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-webpassed. Atrunk buildbundle was opened and exercised in Chromium before the later redaction and shortcut fixes; screenshots below show that earlier interactive run.ui_shotworkflow at 1366 × 900, including View-ribbon access, HTTP 503 details, connection failures, all requested filters, reopening, Clear, and the separate performance monitor.NotAllowedErrorand required a permission grant before the successful copy/read check. A rebuilt bundle retained one UI-only error and reopened the pane from its status notice. The existing performance metrics remained accessible.Local checks used debug symbols and incremental compilation disabled to keep generated artifacts smaller. Hardware-WebGPU visual verification was not performed.
