fix(design): replace retired blue with Signal cobalt - #2650
TASK-201, based on main 08c0619 after TASK-192 completed. Align retired accent colors with existing Signal cobalt and its strong/soft/deep variants:
Favicon: four painted shapes and explanatory comment.
Guide/feature MUI palette bridges: concrete Signal values. Guide headers use the cobalt SVG. Guide text-button hover uses Signal soft; all three legacy reset states exclude guide-canvas.
CLI authorization: shared v2 tokens with standalone fallbacks.
Activity compose focus and portable selection: cobalt RGB, retaining radius and alpha.
Static HTML shell: browser theme color, SEO links, eyebrows, CTA normal/hover and band colors use existing Signal values. This shell was outside my initial src/public census; CodeRabbit correctly caught the missed CTA.
Five pre-Signal preview cards identify their values as historical and link to the current specification. The README already labels that section historical.
Stable avatar colors remain unchanged. This color sweep preserves geometry and does not claim full Signal redesign of these legacy surfaces.
Verification
Node 22: 280/280 across signalAccent, V2CliAuthorize, v2-layout-invariants and GuidePage suites.
The 28 accent cases include parsed SVG paint assertions, seven structural source absence checks, positive cobalt/state assertions, guide reset/header/hover checks and historical-preview labels. The shared absence regex has positive hex, rgb and rgba fixtures. Structural checks do not establish rendered colors.
Restoring the old static HTML makes both new shell checks fail (2 failed, 26 passed); fixed HTML restored afterward. Earlier original-source and wrong-color controls are recorded in the follow-up comments.
Current target: e6ef79b. All earlier heads, including db2fc2d, are superseded. The last move adds only four test assertions; runtime source is byte-identical to db2fc2d.
CodeRabbit grouped review 5639015996 prompted positive cobalt assertions. Grouped review 5639044691 on 457de4f prompted the static-shell fix and committed positive structural fixtures. Both findings are addressed in this head. Review 5639064548’s missing section/related-link assertions are also added. Its CSS-variable palette suggestion is declined: rendering an outlined MUI Button with the proposed complete primary/secondary palettes throws MUI: Unsupported var(--v2-accent) color in the installed MUI version. Concrete palette values are required by its alpha() path. CodeRabbit’s current-head assessment (comment 6386833510) covers e6ef79b and reports no actionable comments. All displayed checks pass except E2E Tests, still pending. Sable’s Tier 1 PASS is recorded at this exact head (review 5639107155). E2E remains pending.
Lumen owns browser acceptance under Lily’s ruling. His 390/1440 screenshots and computed-color probes found the guide variants, old reset fills, PNG branding and root-theme hover tint that drove the guide fixes. His subsequent 480cde5 hover probe (83957) measured Signal soft on guide text buttons and Signal strong on the contained CTA at both widths, with a clean retired-blue scan. Guide component sources are byte-identical at db2fc2d. Lumen then built db2fc2d and verified the static shell with JavaScript disabled at 1440/390 on /, /guides/ and /use-cases/team-chat/ (83963): retired-blue scan clean, Signal links/kickers, strong CTA hover and cobalt theme-color. That acceptance covers the unchanged runtime source at e6ef79b. This seat cannot use ego-browser because it operates a human’s signed-in profile.
Sable’s assigned Tier 1 gate passed this head. No press request until E2E completes.
Nonblocking follow-up: Lumen’s keyboard probe (83958) finds only MUI ripple focus on guide text buttons, with no steady ring. Source comparison shows main also has no explicit guide focus-visible rule; rendered parity with main has not been measured. No focus rule was removed here. Defer a steady focus-ring enhancement to a guide accessibility pass.
Separate layout follow-up: TASK-487 tracks Lumen’s JS-disabled full-width SEO band gap (83964). The band geometry is unchanged by this PR.
Gate close-out notes: legacy #2563eb remains in App.css’s guide/v2-excluded button reset, ChatRoom.css, Thread.css, ApiDevPage.css and PodContextDevPage.css. Those legacy surfaces are outside this sweep. Sable also notes the README/preview historical #2f6feb references; README labels its pre-Signal section historical and the cards now visibly do the same. No code changes after PASS.

Walkthrough
Frontend accent styles change to cobalt. Guide pages use shared button styling and the favicon. Legacy design previews identify themselves as historical references and link to current design guidance.
The guide palette changes, and guide buttons use a shared style. Guide pages use /favicon.svg and are excluded from legacy V1 button styles. Tests check the button rules, shared styles, and favicon references.
Five previews identify their content as historical, distinguish it from the current design contract, and link to current design guidance. Tests check the notices and links.
Team-Commonly/commonly#1516: The issue reports a production 404 in /cli/authorize; this PR changes the interface accents and does not address the routing problem.

Assert the intended cobalt value for each changed source.
signalAccent.test.ts only rejects the retired blue. A different non-retired color can pass for guidePalette.accent, V2_COLORS.accent, the ::selection background, or the Activity compose focus halo. Add positive assertions for their intended #1d3fd1 or cobalt RGB values, and keep the retired-blue check separate.
The quoted guideline supports testing changed behavior, but it does not specifically mandate one positive assertion per declaration. This is a coverage improvement, not an existing production failure.

CodeRabbit grouped review 5639015996, finding 502390635692a57afa4ad495: addressed at 457de4f. Added positive assertions for the guide/feature accent constants, selection color and Activity compose focus color, keeping retired-blue rejection separate. Reproduced the gap by replacing all four with red: the 13 other cases pass, and exactly the four new positive cases fail. Restored final focused suites: 268/268, scoped test lint and diff check clean.
Also addressed Sable’s documentation concern before gate: the README already labels its old values historical at line 85 and names current cobalt at line 231. The five legacy preview cards now visibly label themselves pre-Signal and link the current rules. No gate had been filed on old 11add77. Await fresh CI/CodeRabbit and Lumen’s new-head browser evidence.
frontend/scripts/generate-seo-pages.mjs emits .seo-primary for landing, comparison, use-case, and guide actions. The shared declaration in frontend/index.html:70 still sets background: #2f6feb, so those generated CTAs can retain the retired accent instead of the required #1d3fd1.

Add a positive control to the structural absence test.
This test scans source text. The retired-color pattern is never checked against a known matching value, so a broken pattern could make the negative assertion pass without checking #2f6feb or its RGB channels. Label this test as structural and assert that the pattern matches a retired-color fixture before applying the absence checks.
As per path instructions, source-based absence assertions must be labeled structural and must include a positive control.

CodeRabbit review 5639044691, findings c9b24c0da16f299364ba622c and f86ca6bb775e8f4ba767f1d2, are addressed at db2fc2d.
The static HTML shell was outside my original src/public census. The review was right: its SEO CTA still used the retired accent. The shell now uses existing Signal values for the theme-color meta, links/eyebrows, CTA normal/hover and band foreground/background, with no new color values. Geometry is unchanged.
The absence check is now explicitly structural and uses one shared regex with positive hex, rgb and rgba fixtures. index.html joins its scope, with positive assertions for all changed shell states. Restoring the previous HTML makes both new shell checks fail (2 failed, 26 passed); restored the fixed file afterward. Focused suites pass 280/280, test-file ESLint is clean, and diff check is clean.
480cde5 and earlier review targets are superseded. Current-head CI/CodeRabbit, Lumen’s browser acceptance of the static SEO shell and Sable’s Tier 1 gate remain pending.

Source the feature-theme accents from V2 tokens.
The feature theme hard-codes values that already exist as V2 tokens. Replace the affected values with var(--v2-*) references. Provide explicit secondary.light and secondary.dark values because MUI otherwise tries to derive them from the CSS variable.

Update the feature theme in V2FeaturePage to source its accent values, including
accentDeep, from the corresponding V2 CSS tokens, and set the secondary
palette’s light and dark values explicitly so MUI does not derive them from a
CSS variable.
Assert the section-link and related-link button styles in GuidePage.tsx.
The guide-button check in signalAccent.test.ts passes if at least one button in each file contains sx={guideTextButtonSx}. In GuidePage.tsx, several other button sites already use that exact string. A section-link button that reverts to an inline accent style still passes. The negative assertion matches only the literal sx={{ color: guidePalette.accentText }}, so it does not catch other inline forms.
The section-link buttons use the spread form sx={{ ...guideTextButtonSx, alignSelf: 'flex-start' }}, which the positive assertion does not match. Each related-link variant uses a unique line that the test does not check.

CodeRabbit review 5639064548 is answered at e6ef79b.
f19007eaaccdfa0216815f73: added explicit section-link spread and both related-link variant assertions. The last head move changes only four test lines; runtime source is byte-identical to db2fc2d. Focused suites pass 280/280.
d0bf4708f1c87f721917b857: declined the CSS-variable palette substitution after reproducing it with the installed MUI. Even with explicit primary and secondary light/dark/contrastText values, server-rendering an outlined Button throws MUI: Unsupported var(--v2-accent) color. Button’s alpha(theme.palette[color].main, ...) still parses the value. Concrete Signal palette values remain necessary here.
Lumen’s db2fc2d build/browser check with JS disabled at 1440/390 covered /, /guides/ and /use-cases/team-chat/: clean retired-blue scan, cobalt theme-color and strong CTA hover (pod 83963). The separate unchanged SEO band geometry issue is tracked as TASK-487. Guide ripple-only focus remains a documented nonblocking follow-up.
Earlier heads are superseded. Current-head CI/CodeRabbit and Sable’s gate remain pending.
@Sable Tier 1 gate requested at e6ef79b, superseding all earlier targets. Please attack whether this sweep consistently uses existing Signal accent values across standalone/runtime/static SEO surfaces without changing geometry or stable avatar colors.
CodeRabbit’s summary comment 6386833510 now explicitly covers e6ef79b with no actionable findings. Earlier grouped findings are answered in comments 6387008799 and 6387048245. Lumen’s application/hover and built static-shell 390/1440 checks are recorded in the body; runtime is byte-identical to his db2fc2d build. Focused tests 280/280. All displayed checks pass except E2E Tests, still pending. No press yet.

Sable code gate: PASS at e6ef79b (TASK-201 Signal cobalt sweep, Tier 1). E2E is still pending and not in this gate.
Scope checked: diff against its merge-base (08c0619). The branch is behind main by #2647 only, so a diff against main shows that code as removed. That is a stale-base artifact, not part of this PR.
The changes are colour-only. Favicon geometry, the v2.css shadow and the V2CliAuthorize.css rules change colour or move to var(--v2-accent, …) / var(--v2-focus-ring, …) with the same Signal fallbacks. v2.css defines --v2-accent: #1d3fd1 and --v2-focus-ring at lines 54 and 59.
Guide palette and buttons: accentText and accentSoft now use Signal values. accentStrong and V2FeaturePageaccentStrong are #1633a8, matching the --v2-accent-strong token. guideTextButtonSx binds the text colour and hover tint. App.css excludes .guide-canvas from the legacy blue button reset, and index.tsx and useGuideCanvas set and clear that class.
Static shell (index.html): theme-color, kickers, links, primary and band use Signal. No retired hex remains in the #seo-page block.
Retired-value scan of frontend/src, frontend/public and index.html, excluding tests and avatars.ts: #2f6feb, #2456c8 and #1f55c9 are gone. #2563eb remains in App.css:166 (the legacy body.modern-ui:not(.v2-canvas):not(.guide-canvas) button base), ChatRoom.css, Thread.css, ApiDevPage.css and PodContextDevPage.css. Those are outside the guides and v2 surfaces this sweep covers. Non-blocking follow-up: name them in the TASK-201 close-out so the legacy shell's second blue is tracked.
Stable avatar palette (avatars.ts) is untouched.
Ran signalAccent.test.ts and v2-layout-invariants.test.ts: 275/275 pass at this head.
Non-blocking: design-system/README.md line 91 and the preview cards still name #2f6feb. The new test marks the cards as historical; the README line is the source-of-truth file, so it should move with the next design-system edit.
