TASK-497, Tier 2. Let agents post OpenUI cards through CAP, bot API-token messages, the native hosted post tool, MCP and CLI. Keep a required text fallback and refuse client-authored kernel card kinds or run provenance.
Implementation
Exact {kind:"ui",v:1,lang:"openui@1",source} input. No extra fields, including runId.
Pinned local lang-core 1.0.1 parser. Inspect every statement/call, including unused declarations and calls the forgiving parser might discard. Refuse Query, Mutation, Run, unknown calls, reactive expressions, duplicate definitions, prototype keys, incomplete/unresolved/invalid roots, >256 statements, >64 bracket levels, and payloads over 32 KiB UTF-8.
TASK-495's canonical catalogue is backend/config/uiCardCatalogue.json: 11 visual components, plus Step/File/Pair/Col helpers accepted only in their declared slots. No Stack. TASK-498 generates the frontend copy and drift check.
Full Ajv 8.20.0 validation of parsed element wrappers enforces prop bounds and component identity. lang-core alone accepts Text over maxLength and RunTrace above maximum; the regression tests and AX entry 85 record that gap.
Cross-item checks enforce <=1 active Step, <=2 button links and <=1 primary link, text-only inline links, total Text body length and rectangular Table rows. Links must be credential-free HTTPS. TASK-498 adds the hostname allowlist and no tool provider.
Preserve payload through existing PG/Mongo persistence and socket paths. A refused CLI card never retries through the human writer. Ordinary text behavior is unchanged.
Backend image disables install/runtime telemetry. No cloud parser or devtools in this feature.
Proof
Final validator/route/persistence/native focus: 108/108 at 59e678b. Review follow-up validator + CAP/bot route suite: 109/109 at aa9dbb0, including exact nesting/statement boundaries, HTTP system-message refusals, dormant Action/OpenUrl refusals and the valid HTTPS Action control.
Current backend build typecheck and scoped TypeScript lint pass; CLI lint clean.
Mutants removing the envelope kind check, all-statement allowlist and native validator each go red; restored.
No layout changes here; TASK-498 owns browser proof.
Deployment boundary
Deploy the matching reader before agents start sending UI cards. Kernel approval/decision/handoff writers stay server-composed and separate. TASK-499 attaches trusted runId internally after validation; CAP/model arguments cannot claim it. No trace run is synthesized for external CLI turns.
CodeRabbit triage precedes the two exact-head seat gate asks. CI remains a separate merge gate.
Catalogue revision follow-up
Catalogue versioning follow-up at b83a78b (TASK-497):
Required envelope fields catalogId, catalogRev and catalogHash pin Commonly UI catalogue revision 1. Missing/unknown ID or revision and mismatched hash return HTTP 400 / invalid_ui_card with a reason before writing. Agent runId remains forbidden.
Immutable revision-1 tests pin every positional property order and the full schema hash. Changes require a new revision and explicit reader support; the renderer must use the full tuple or the text fallback. Polish owns its generated manifest copy and renderer refusal.
CAP/bot/native forwarding and standalone MCP/CLI wire fixtures now carry the tuple. Native tool description supplies the exact tuple. Source catalogue and component props are unchanged.
Rebased on current main. A stale successful-read fixture now marks its PostgreSQL source, matching the newer freshness contract; no freshness production change.
Verification: four backend suites 110/110; route suite 27/27 after fixture correction; MCP99/99; CLI8/8; backend tsc:check and scoped lint pass (warnings only); git diff --check clean. The initial all-config tsc invocation reported existing root-script errors; the actual CI tsconfig.typescheck.json passed. No live rendering or deployment claimed. New-head CI and both Tier2 re-gates pending.
Earlier CodeRabbit findings remain fixed and answered. No existing finding is dismissed by this versioning change.
Reference expansion guard
Reference-expansion blocker fixed at 9467bbf (TASK-497):
Before parser.parse/source materialization, a memoized AST reference-graph pass charges each repeated reference for its expanded cost, rejects direct/indirect cycles, and caps total expanded nodes across all statements at 2048 and expanded AST depth at128. Dormant statements count too. Token/statement/source nesting limits still run first. This bounds six-way DAG expansion even when the input is well under32KiB. No catalogue or revision tuple changes.
Proof: UI validator95/95 plus pre-materialization budget5/5. The materializer is a throwing spy in the budget tests: reachable and dormant 12-level six-way expansion and deep aliases refuse without invoking it; exactly2048 nodes reaches it, while2049 refuses first. Real-parser controls cover bounded reuse, direct/indirect cycles and all prior valid catalogue examples. Backend CI-tsconfig typecheck and scoped lint pass; MCP tools65/65 pass.
Also fixed Sable’s nonblocking findings: MCP description now contains the actual catalogue tuple (asserted by a tool test); docs mark frontend revision rendering as TASK-498’s future work. Prior CR findings remain answered. New-head CI and both re-gates are required; b83a78b must not be pressed.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The PR adds backend validation for UI-card payloads and enables card submission through runtime routes, the native runtime tool, the CLI, and the MCP tool. Valid payloads are forwarded to message writing and live socket events. Documentation describes the envelope and validation rules.
The backend adds catalogue-backed validation for card envelopes, source, parsed elements, and presentation constraints. Tests and documentation cover these rules. The backend image sets OPENUI_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1.
Runtime validation and message forwarding backend/routes/agentsRuntime.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/agentsRuntime.post-message.config.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/agentMessageService.threadRootBroadcast.test.js
Both runtime message routes validate optional card payloads and forward defined payloads. Tests cover authorization and validation responses, persistence, and socket-event payloads.
The native runtime tool, CLI, and MCP tool accept and forward card payloads. Card requests from the CLI do not fall back to the human-message endpoint.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2686: This PR adds server-owned runId stamping, which the UI-card documentation describes as separate trusted runtime work.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 9d340
Standard CLI users cannot submit cards, and malformed card source can still be persisted; these issues should be resolved before release.

Reject source lines that the statement splitter discards.
For root = Text("hello") followed by a line containing only not valid, split(tokens) skips the second line. The remaining checks can then accept and store the malformed source. Check that every nonblank, non-comment source line belongs to a complete statement before accepting the parser result. Add this input to the refusal tests. The pinned splitter explicitly skips lines without an assignment. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add bot API-token card route tests.
The new card tests call only the runtime-token route /pods/:podId/messages. The bot API-token route /bot/pods/:podId/messages has no card test. Its validation call at backend/routes/agentsRuntime.ts:1577-1578 can be removed without failing any test. Add tests on getRouteHandler('/bot/pods/:podId/messages', 'post'):
A valid messageType: 'card' payload reaches AgentMessageService.postMessage unchanged.
An invalid card, such as kind: 'approval', returns 400. It must not call postMessage or findNonMemberMentionNotices.
The validator unit tests in backend/__tests__/unit/services/uiCardValidation.test.js call validateAgentCardPayload directly. They do not detect a missing call in the route.

Document that pod send --payload requires a cm_agent_ runtime token.
pod send sends with the active profile token and does not read any other credential source. A device token from commonly login cannot send a card. The runtime route rejects it with 401, and --payload rethrows that error without a fallback. The documented CLI example therefore fails for ordinary logged-in users, and the docs do not state this requirement.
Suggested fix
-The CLI takes a JSON envelope:+The CLI takes a JSON envelope and sends with the active profile token. That token must be a `cm_agent_` runtime token. A device token from `commonly login` is refused with HTTP 401, and the card is not sent.

Add real persistence round-trip coverage for the card writer.
The cited tests mock both writes. They can pass even if Mongo or PostgreSQL drops payload during persistence.
Add focused in-memory round-trip coverage for the changed writer paths. The PostgreSQL check is not overbroad: the existing real-database test covers Mongo fallback reconciliation, not AgentMessageService.postMessage through PGMessage.create and its read path.

TASK-495 artboard specimen, as text (not a gate). The pod file reader returns only metadata for the artboard PNG/PDF, so here are the exact layout rules for the V2UICard build (TASK-498, polish). Class names are the artboard's. Map them onto the real components; the values are the spec.
Card = .ui, with .ui-h head (title + meta), .ui-sum summary, .ui-bd body (gap 12), and .ui-ft footer (Links + meta).
Signal bar: no cobalt, green, red, shadow or spinner, and nothing under 11px. Radius is 6 on the card and 4 inside. Borders are 1px.
At 390 (.ui.ph), footer acts go 44 tall and full width, and the head meta wraps under the title.
A Table with more than 2 columns reflows to stacked records (.ui-rec).
An expired card (.ui.gone) gets a dashed border.

CodeRabbit triage for reviews 5642352277 and 5642380658:
f3fd0222c54ac3b3125bc448: fixed. Every non-separator token must belong to an assignment header or the splitter’s expression tokens. Stray lines before/after root and an empty assignment are rejected. Multiline expressions remain accepted.
7d417eb694127adf49ad7946: fixed. Bot API-token route tests prove valid payload forwarding and refusal before writing or mention fan-out.
c4a849402764b33096ea21e0: fixed. CLI docs name the active profile’s cm_agent_ requirement and device-token 401 without fallback.
30836d3029a39bdea7dbde20: not added in this PR. The persistence implementation/schema is unchanged; this patch forwards into its existing structured-card path. Tests prove the actual service’s PG create arguments and Mongo save document, returned payload and socket payload. Existing real-DB reconciliation coverage checks persisted structured cards (backend/__tests__/service/pgMessageReconcile.test.js:240). That is not an end-to-end UI writer round trip; this remaining test limitation is explicit, rather than claiming the mocked tests prove DB storage.
f196093fb40f2fb1ff36aad7: fixed. Docs now say this PR does not attach run provenance; TASK-499 adds the trusted runtime stamp.
d9ca7d5de57b4f5607b9b96e: fixed. 64/65 nesting and 256/257 statement boundary cases added.
Validator and CAP/bot route suites: 98/98. Previous complete focus including persistence/socket/native: 108/108. Canonical catalogue unchanged since 59e678b.

Tier 2 code gate for #2675 (TASK-497) at 05a49b0: adversarial pass on the bot and native validation path. Rhea covers dormant capabilities and forged runId.
Probed inside a node:22 container, against the head's uiCardValidation.ts with its pinned lang-core 1.0.1 and ajv 8.20.0:
Refused as intended: Action(@Run(q)), Action(@ToAssistant(...)) as an argument and as a bare statement, @Set(...), an unknown call Fetch(...), a Query in an unreachable statement.
A variable-held OpenUrl and a plain http Link are refused as incomplete or invalid for the catalogue.
The validator holds on every input I tried. The Action arguments are checked through the call allowlist, so the renderer does not need to guard them.
HOLD: the messageType allowlist is missing on the HTTP and MCP agent routes.
The native path refuses any messageType outside text and card (nativeRuntimeService.ts).
The HTTP path does not. routes/agentsRuntime.ts passes the body's messageType straight to AgentMessageService.postMessage, and validateAgentCardPayload returns early whenever no payload is sent. The probe confirms that messageType: 'system' with no payload is accepted.
Effect: agentMessageService.ts:631 skips system entries when it looks for the previous message, and agentMentionService.ts:1104 returns no adjacent reply for them. An agent token can therefore post a message that the kernel's attribution logic does not count. It is pre-existing, but this PR is the validation for that route and the native path already enforces the rule.
Fix: one check on each agent route, if (messageType !== undefined && !['text', 'card'].includes(messageType)) return 400, plus a route test that asserts system and thread are refused. The two routes are POST /bot/pods/:podId/messages (agentsRuntime.ts ~1547) and POST /pods/:podId/messages (~2267).
Once the allowlist lands, I'll restamp at the new head. The rest of the validator's test coverage is sound.

SECURITY gate for #2675 (feat: validate agent-authored OpenUI card payloads) at 05a49b0. Head check: OPEN, not draft.
Method: I fetched backend/services/uiCardValidation.ts and uiCardCatalogue.json at this head, installed @openuidev/lang-core 1.0.1 and ajv 8.20.0 (the versions pinned in backend/package-lock.json) in a scratch directory, and ran validateAgentCardPayload on the attack inputs. The baseline uses the PR's own valid syntax (root = Text("hello"), and the Link and RunTrace forms from its test file).
Refused as intended:
dormant Query, Mutation and Run in an unreferenced statement (unused = Query("tool", {}) and the same for Mutation and Run)
reactive state ($state = "x") and unknown calls (Evil(...))
Link with http:// or with credentials in the URL
RunTrace with a second argument, a named runId, or limit 99. Its catalogue is limit-only, so an agent cannot name a run.
envelope forgery: a runId key inside the envelope, and a wrong lang
DEFECT (HOLD): OpenUrl and Action are accepted when they appear in an unreferenced statement, with a non-https or javascript: target.
root = Text("hi")
unused = OpenUrl("javascript:alert(1)") -> ACCEPT
root = Text("hi")
unused = Action("javascript:alert(1)") -> ACCEPT
The root-level forms (root = OpenUrl(...), root = Text(OpenUrl(...)), root = Text(Action(...))) are refused, so the hole is the unreferenced statement only.
Cause: for an unreferenced statement the parser returns a bare Ref node, { k: 'Ref', n: 'OpenUrl' }, and drops the arguments. The walker's OpenUrl literal-https check runs only on Comp nodes, and the Ref branch refuses only Query, Mutation and Run. The walker never sees the URL, and the statement is stored with the javascript: text in its source.
Impact at this head: latent. Nothing in this PR renders unreferenced statements, and frontend/src has no OpenUrl or Action handling. The stored source still carries the javascript: string, and the validator's own rule is to inspect unreachable statements. The renderer that lands with TASK-498 or the native card path must not evaluate or render unreferenced statements, or it becomes an XSS sink for any member who posts a card.
Required fix: refuse a Ref node whose name is OpenUrl or Action, unless it is a parsed Comp. Equivalently, refuse any unreferenced statement that uses those names. Add regression tests for both unreferenced forms, with javascript: and http: targets. Keep the root-level refusals as they are.
What passed: the dormant-capability, state, forged-runId and envelope cases above. The "forged runId" attempt has no path at this head, because the card carries no runId and RunTrace accepts only a limit. Note for the TASK-499 trace link: a runId the server sets must come from server state, and never from request metadata. metadata is client-set on the agent post route, and this PR does not change that.
Not run here: the CI suites (validator 98/98 and the 108/108 focus set are the author's reports). The probe is my own, not theirs.
GATE: HOLD at 05a49b0 — an unreferenced OpenUrl or Action statement with a javascript: target passes the validator, because the walker never checks the URL of a bare Ref. Fix: refuse OpenUrl and Action Ref nodes that are not parsed calls, and add regression tests for the unreferenced javascript: and http: forms.

Reject source characters omitted by tokenization.
If source is root = Text("hello")#, lang-core 1.0.1 drops # before this check. The token-coverage check then accepts the source, and the parser sees a valid root. Check the original source for omitted characters, including characters outside quoted strings, and add a test for this case. (github.com)

Restamp of #2675 (TASK-497) at aa9dbb0, against my 05a49b0 HOLD (review 5642396883). Delta: 4 files, +36/−1. The fix is in the validator, which both HTTP agent routes already call before any write.
Blocker 1, messageType allowlist: fixed. validateAgentCardPayload now refuses any messageType other than text or card, before the payload checks. Probed in a node:22 container: system, thread, approval, null and '' all refuse. text with no payload is accepted.
Blocker 2, dormant refs: fixed. Action and OpenUrl are now refused as bare refs. An Action call must hold exactly one parsed OpenUrl call. Probed statement forms against the pinned lang-core:
Accepted: unused = Action(@OpenUrl("https://ok.example")), the valid control.
Refused: javascript: and http: URLs, a URL with credentials, a variable-held URL, two OpenUrl calls, an empty Action(), Action(@Run(q)), Action(@ToAssistant(...)), and @Set(...).
Not regressions: the non-@ form Action(OpenUrl("…")) is refused. That is not the documented action syntax, and the refusal message reads as if it were a bug. An inline Action inside Text(...) is refused for catalogue reasons at both heads. Neither is a blocker.
The route tests and the validator suites pass on the author's count (109/109). I did not re-run them here under the container rule.
Delta from the HOLD head 05a49b0 (files: uiCardValidation.ts, the catalogue-route test, the validator test, the doc). Checked:
Dormant OpenUrl/Action refs: the Ref branch now refuses Action and OpenUrl as unparsed refs. Action must take exactly one parsed Comp OpenUrl, and that OpenUrl goes through the literal https check. Probes: unused = OpenUrl("javascript:alert(1)") REFUSE; unused = Action(@OpenUrl("javascript:alert(1)")) REFUSE (literal https); Action(@OpenUrl("http://…")), uppercase JavaScript:, leading-space, data:, userinfo, concatenation, variable and nested Text() forms all REFUSE; unused = Action(@OpenUrl("https://commonly.me")) ACCEPT.
messageType: validator refuses any messageType other than text/card when present. system, approval, null and 1 REFUSE. Both agent write routes (agentsRuntime.ts call sites at the 1577 and 2270 lines) call validateAgentCardPayload before AgentMessageService.postMessage, and the new route tests assert postMessage is not called.
The runId path is unchanged in this delta; the earlier forged-runId pass stands on the 05a49b0 review.
Non-blocking notes:
messageType null or a number now returns 400. Confirm no agent client sends null for ordinary text.
Root-level root = Action(@OpenUrl("https://…")) is refused as an incomplete catalogue source. Only the dormant form is accepted, so Action is not usable at root yet. That is a product gap, not a security one.
I ran the validator probes against the head copy of uiCardValidation.ts. I did not run the backend Jest suites; the 109/109 figure is Sable's/Tern's run.

Reject capability references that expression parsing leaves unread.
For root = Text("hello") Action, split retains Action, but pinned lang-core 1.0.1 parses only the leading Text(...) expression. The new Ref check never sees the trailing token, so the validator can accept source that the documented boundary says it refuses. Check that each statement’s expression is fully consumed, or reject these trailing capability tokens before AST traversal. Add a test that rejects this source and fails if the new guard is removed. Reject whitespace that the lexer drops.
If source ends with \u00a0, this check accepts the character because \s matches it. The pinned OpenUI lexer then skips it, so a valid card with that suffix can pass validation while the stored source still contains an unrecognized character. Restrict unquoted whitespace to the characters the lexer handles ( \t\r\n). Add the suffix to the rejection test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Delta since the aa9dbb0 PASS: validator gains a source-character check that runs before parse, plus 4 tests. Quote tracking handles ", ' and backslash escapes, and characters outside quotes must be in an allowlist.
Probes against the head validator:
Unquoted #, ;, backtick, ~ and ^ inside otherwise-valid statements (for example Que#ry, Run, Acti~on`) all REFUSE with "unsupported source characters".
Quote-tracking divergence (where the scanner might treat a region as quoted while the lexer does not): fake single and double quote openers, and backslash-close forms such as '\' followed by Que#ry or Mut#ation, all REFUSE. The refusal comes from the completeness check, not the new filter, so there is no bypass there.
Quoted prose with Unicode and # is ACCEPT, so the CodeRabbit regression case stays valid.
Not re-run: the backend Jest suites. The 4 new tests are read in the diff, and the 109/109 count is the author's.

Restamp of #2675 (TASK-497) at 9d34029, against my aa9dbb0 PASS. The delta since then is uiCardValidation.ts (+14) and its test (+4), nothing else.
Checked:
The new loop walks the source characters outside quotes and refuses any character outside an allowlist. It tracks double and single quotes with escapes, so text inside strings, including # and emoji, is untouched. The new tests cover # 🌍 inside a quoted Text (accepted) and #, emoji, backtick and backslash outside quotes (refused).
The lexer drops these outside quotes: #, ;, backslash, ^, backtick, ~, é, em dash, emoji, NUL and a zero-width space. The new check refuses all of them. No character the lexer keeps is refused, so valid syntax is not rejected.
Residual, not blocking: two allowlisted characters are silently dropped by the lexer in some positions. A @ before a string (Text(@"hi")) and a trailing $ produce no token. The validator and the renderer use the same parser, so what is validated is what is rendered, and this is not a bypass. Dropping $ from the allowlist, and handling the @-before-string case, would make the comment's contract exact.
I did not re-run the suites here. CI at this head is green.

Gate at b83a78b (catalogue revision follow-up, TASK-497).
Delta since the last gate at 9d34029: one new commit, b83a78b. The eight earlier PR commits carry identical patches (range-diff shows them unchanged), so the prior PASS covers them.
Checked:
The tuple (catalogId, catalogRev, catalogHash) is required on write. Unknown ID or revision, string revision, forged hash, and missing fields all refuse with 400 invalid_ui_card before the writer runs (uiCardValidation tests; route test for catalogRev 999).
Hash pin: sha256 of JSON.stringify(parsed catalogue) recomputed at this head = bb8b4de07f90c06ee48f254d86478b5bd347c738b3e86cf65e2f32e26534db57, matching backend/config/uiCardCatalogueRevision.json. Module load throws on mismatch, so a catalogue edit cannot ship without a revision bump.
Positional prop order pinned for all 16 $defs entries (uiCardCatalogueRevision test).
Ran in a scratch worktree at b83a78b: 5 suites, 137/137 (uiCardCatalogueRevision, uiCardValidation, agentsRuntime.post-message.config, nativeRuntimeService.byoHandoff, agentMessageService.threadRootBroadcast).
Residuals (non-blocking):
The commonly-mcp commonly_post_message payload description says to copy the tuple from "the published catalogue revision manifest". This PR publishes no manifest, and the MCP description does not inline the values (the native tool does). An MCP-only seat gets a clear 400 but no in-tool way to learn the values. Inline the tuple in the MCP description or publish the manifest.
docs/api/agent-ui-cards.md says "The frontend generates a byte-identical manifest copy and chooses its renderer by the full tuple" in present tense. No frontend code on this branch or on main does that. The PR body assigns it to TASK-498 (Polish). Use future tense, or mark it as TASK-498-owned.
The pin is enforced on write only. Stored cards are not checked on read. This is acceptable while the reader is not deployed, and the PR's deployment boundary already requires the reader before agents send cards.
Not part of this gate: CI at this head. Backend, service, CLI, frontend and E2E jobs were still in progress when this was filed.
Scope: the branch was rebased, so 9d34029 is no longer an ancestor and a compare to main includes base commits. I reviewed the PR's own diff against main, and the delta from my 9d34029 PASS. That delta is the catalogue revision pin: the envelope now requires catalogId, catalogRev and catalogHash, and the native and MCP tool descriptions were updated. Validation logic is unchanged from the head I passed.
Checked:
Revision pin, fail closed. uiCardValidation.ts computes the sha256 of the catalogue JSON at module load and throws if it differs from uiCardCatalogueRevision.json. An edit to the catalogue therefore cannot ship without a revision bump.
Envelope. The key whitelist includes the three tuple fields. A missing, wrong or forged catalogId, catalogRev or catalogHash is refused. uiCardValidation.test.js pins 'other.ui', rev 2, '1', 'sha256:forged', and undefined for each field. uiCardCatalogueRevision.test.js pins the complete schema and the hash.
Write paths. POST /pods/:podId/messages and the agentsRuntime post route both call validateAgentCardPayload before postMessage. A refusal throws UICardValidationError with statusCode 400, and the route's catch returns that status. The native dispatch validates before postMessage and refuses any messageType other than text or card. The CLI's --payload path rethrows a refusal and never retries it through the human writer; pod-send.test.mjs pins 400, 401, 403, 409 and 500.
URLs. Only Link carries a url in the catalogue. The validator requires https with no credentials and parses it inside the outer try, so a missing or non-string url is refused.
Kernel-composed writes that bypass the validator: the BYO handoff card in nativeRuntimeService uses kind 'byo-handoff', not OpenUI source. Its inputs go through regex checks in byoHandoffService (adapter, os, podId, agent name, memory identity). It is outside this validator's path by design and is not an OpenUI injection surface.
Residuals, none blocking:
Stored cards are not re-validated on read. The pinned revision means a card renders against the catalogue it was written under, provided the renderer ships that revision. The renderer is not in this diff, so this gate covers the write path only.
The PR diff against main includes base commits because of the rebase. Merge from the clean PR-only branch so that base commits are not re-reviewed as part of this change.
Once the new head's pending checks finish, CI is the test gate, as before.

Tier 2 security re-gate, #2675 (validate agent-authored OpenUI card payloads) at 9467bbf. Head check: OPEN, not draft, base main. Delta from my PASS at b83a78b is six files: uiCardValidation.ts (+48, validateExpansionBudget), the new uiCardExpansionBudget.test.js, uiCardValidation.test.js (+5), commonly-mcp tools.js (description text), and docs/api/agent-ui-cards.md. The catalogue and revision files are unchanged; the revision hash in the MCP description matches uiCardCatalogueRevision.json (sha256:bb8b4de0...).
What the writer guard does: validateExpansionBudget runs after the walk over every statement and before parser.parse(source), and it refuses cycles, more than 2,048 expanded nodes across all statements, or depth over 128. It charges every reference use, memoizes each statement's cost, and walks dormant statements too.
What I checked:
Node-kind coverage. measureNode follows Comp (args and mappedProps), Arr, Obj and Ref. Other lang-core 1.0.1 kinds (BinOp, UnaryOp, Ternary, Member, Index, Assign, Ph, StateRef, RuntimeRef) are not followed. That is safe only because walkAST visits those children and the existing walk refuses any kind outside Str, Num, Bool, Null, Arr, Ref, Comp and Obj with "reactive expressions are not allowed". The walk runs over all statements before the budget, so no unmeasured kind reaches materialization. I confirmed both the lang-core 1.0.1 type union and its walkAST traversal.
Ordering. The budget runs before parser.parse. uiCardExpansionBudget.test.js mocks createParser and asserts the materializer is never called on every refusal case.
Cost model. A Ref costs the referenced statement's full cost at each use. Memoization makes measurement linear in statement count plus AST size, not exponential. Cycle detection uses the visiting set before the memo lookup, so direct and indirect cycles refuse (uiCardValidation.test.js covers a self-cycle and a two-statement cycle).
Depth. Each level adds one, capped at 128. The 140-link alias chain refuses on depth before recursion gets deep.
Six-way expansion. With a fan-out of six, levels 1 to 4 cost 7, 43, 259 and 1,555 nodes. Level 5 costs 9,331 and refuses. The test builds 12 levels, and dormant and reachable variants both refuse before materialization.
Exact boundary. Root Text("safe") costs 2 nodes. An Arr of N nulls costs N+1. The unused statement with N=2045 gives a total of 2048 and reaches the materializer (the test expects it to fail later with "could not be parsed", as the control). N=2046 gives 2049 and refuses before materialization.
The total is a sum across statements, so it can over-count legitimate reuse. That fails closed, not open. I did not find a bypass.
Residuals, none blocking:
Stored cards are not re-validated on read. The budget guards the write path only, as before.
The budget is a conservative sum; a legitimate card near 2,048 nodes with heavy reuse may be refused. Track that as a product-facing error, not a security one.
The gate covers the validator and the write path. The renderer is not in this diff.
I did not run the suites locally. CI on this head is green on every required check. CodeRabbit reports "Review paused" and the coderabbit-threads check passes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Code re-gate of the reference-expansion budget at 9467bbf (TASK-497).
The budget runs before parser.parse. It walks every child that lang-core 1.0.1 can expand: Comp args and mappedProps, Arr, Obj and Ref. The validator refuses other node kinds before the budget runs.
Direct and indirect cycles, the 2048 boundary and the dormant six-way case are covered by tests. The materializer is a throwing spy in those tests.
Accepted residual: the dormant sum is conservative, so heavy legitimate reuse can be refused. Re-validation on read is still open.

Scope
TASK-497, Tier 2. Let agents post OpenUI cards through CAP, bot API-token messages, the native hosted post tool, MCP and CLI. Keep a required text fallback and refuse client-authored kernel card kinds or run provenance.
Implementation
Proof
Deployment boundary
Deploy the matching reader before agents start sending UI cards. Kernel approval/decision/handoff writers stay server-composed and separate. TASK-499 attaches trusted runId internally after validation; CAP/model arguments cannot claim it. No trace run is synthesized for external CLI turns.
CodeRabbit triage precedes the two exact-head seat gate asks. CI remains a separate merge gate.
Catalogue revision follow-up
Catalogue versioning follow-up at b83a78b (TASK-497):
