feat(see): link cards to bounded run traces (TASK-499) - #2686
Link native hosted agent messages/cards to a durable, read-only run trace and bound AgentRun storage.
Behavior
Native runtime output carries a server-set payload.runId. AgentMessageService strips authored provenance, preserves card fields, and stamps its internal run identity. Native approval proposals retain that identity through card state changes.
/v2/pods/:podId/runs/:runId reads /api/pods/:podId/runs/:runId. The reader uses current pod-read access and constrains both the AgentRun and every PostgreSQL call reference to that pod. Unknown/denied traces return 404; PG outages return 503. No args, results, LLM prose, credential material or argument digests are returned.
Turns show tool, outcome and duration. Only members of the origin pod receive grant and credential-owner IDs. Global admins and agent-DM observers retain pod-read access, with both authorization identities omitted from the response and view. Missing broker records and truncated traces are explicit. Approval trail outcomes account for resolved pending approvals.
AgentRun save validation caps args/results at 4096 serialized UTF-8 bytes / 256 nodes, response text at 4096 UTF-16 code units, 128 turns, 64 calls/turn and a 2 MiB BSON turn budget. It records omission counts and truncation markers, while preserving aggregate token accounting.
English/Chinese UI states, retry, running-trace refresh, Signal styles and a preview are included. Retention copy says 30-day default because Pro protection, configuration and disk pressure can change card retention; AgentRun/tool_calls do not share message expiry.
Verification
Targeted tests only, on Node 22. No full local suite or image build.
Run trace route + real Mongo storage bounds + unauthenticated flood limit: 9/9. The route suite now uses real DMService access decisions: a non-member global admin and an agent-DM observer each receive metadata without grant/owner IDs, while a member retains attribution. Both new cases failed on the prior head.
Agent message PG/socket provenance and existing thread writes: 15/15.
Approval lifecycle: 23/23, including provenance after card transition.
PostgreSQL 17 service test: 1/1 (new SELECT executes on real PostgreSQL; cross-pod references excluded and pending approval resolution is shown).
UI view/link/retry/incomplete audit: 11/11, including English/Chinese withheld-field regressions (both failed before the view fix); existing message-row behavior: 18/18.
Targeted layout invariant: 1/1; Chinese number-spacing guard: 7/7.
Backend/frontend typechecks and changed-file lint pass (existing warnings in surrounding services).
Real headless browser: production components with fixture API data, English/Chinese at 390/1440, no horizontal overflow, trace/back links 32px at desktop and 44px at phone width, access error → retry works, no page errors. This is layout proof, not a production walk.
Mutations: removing the storage assignment, pod access check, or provenance stamp makes its focused assertion fail.
First CI run: backend shards, real DB service shards, CLI/MCP, E2E, backend typecheck/lint and secret scan passed. Frontend failed its Chinese number-spacing guard; the new strings and interpolation declarations are corrected. CodeQL flagged missing rate limiting on the trace read; a 120/min/IP limiter now runs before auth/DB, with a 429 regression. The follow-up head reruns CI.
Scope / rollout
External CLI turns have no AgentRun yet and get no invented trace. No historical backfill, runtime switch, database cutover, secret-store change or retention policy change. Read-only trace access follows the existing DMService.canViewPod policy, including its admin/agent-DM visibility semantics. Authorization identities require actual origin-pod membership independently of that read policy. Card deletion and access loss do not bypass authorization.
TASK-497 owns native OpenUI payload parity and write validation; TASK-498 can reuse V2RunTraceLink and the endpoint. Its last-N renderer can flatten run.turns[].toolCalls and take the last 1–5. See docs/development/run-traces.md for the contract.
Tier 2: native runtime, private-pod trace read and approval-card provenance. Code/security gates plus UX check requested after CI/CR triage. No deploy performed.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds bounded native-run trace storage, server-owned run-ID attribution, and an authenticated pod-scoped trace endpoint. The frontend adds trace links to messages and a page that displays run, turn, tool-call, and available trail metadata.

Runtime messages and approval records carry run and pod identifiers. Agent-run validation limits trace size and records truncation counts. Tests cover provenance propagation, persistence, and trace bounds.
The endpoint checks current pod-view access and returns selected run metadata with pod-scoped tool-call references. Tests cover access outcomes, private-content omission, unavailable references, persistence limits, and lookup failures. Documentation describes the endpoint, limits, retention, and provenance.

Message rows show links for valid pod and run identifiers. The trace page displays run details and handles loading, errors, retry, refresh, and truncation. Localization, layout styling, preview content, and tests support the page.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2675: Covers validation of agent-authored card payloads and client-supplied run provenance; this change attaches server-owned run identifiers to messages and approvals.

Fixed at 598e021. traceReadLimit now runs before authentication and DB access (120 requests/minute/IP, using the shared Cloudflare-aware key). The route regression sends repeated unauthenticated invalid-ID reads and asserts 429; route suite passes 7/7. CI is rerunning.

Add tests that check runId on the other native-runtime post and proposal paths.
Only the hosted-offer test asserts the emitted runId, at backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.hostedOffer.test.js:93. The runId: ctx.runId propagation in these paths has no matching assertion:
fallback post (backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts:2277-2289)
hosted failed-run post (backend/services/nativeRuntimeService.ts:2323-2336)
Removing any of these runId lines leaves the current unit tests passing. Add one assertion per path on the runId in the arguments passed to postMessage or proposeAction. The existing suites for these paths are the natural places, for example byoHandoff, claims, webSearch, and hostedBroker.

Cover the runId writer, forwarding, and persistence paths.
The changed test checks only buildCardPayload with a hand-built row. Existing proposeAction tests cover the general create and message flow, but they do not pass or assert runId. Add runId assertions to that flow and add a real ApprovalAction save/reload check.

Propagate the native run ID through hosted broker dispatch.
A confirmation-required broker call runs inside dispatchCtx.runId, but dispatchHostedBrokerTool and callTool drop that value before calling proposeAction. The approval row and card therefore have no runId, so V2RunTraceLink receives undefined and renders no trace link.
The HTTP proposal path is intentionally unlinked because it has no server-owned native run ID.

UX-GATE: HOLD @ 598e021 — run-trace link and page: four fixes before PASS (en/zh, 1440/390)
How I checked: the diff at 598e021 plus lark's proof zip (4 frames and measurements.json). My own fixture render didn't run because the host is overloaded (load average ~750) and the vite build was killed at 600s. That means the link's placement inside a real message row hasn't been measured. The proof frames show the component on its own, not inside V2MessageRow. I'll render that leg on the next head.
What holds:
Desktop act height. The View run trace link, Back to pod and the page buttons are 44 px tall at 1440 (measurements.json). That's because min-height:44px applies at every width. Signal acts are 32 at desktop and 44 at ≤760. Scope the 44 to @media (max-width:760px) and move the existing 600 px breakpoint to 760 to match the rest of the shell. A 44 px row on every run-linked message also makes the transcript louder than the quiet-meta grammar allows.
zh enums are raw. The summary line renders {trace.status} · {trace.trigger}, so the zh 390 frame shows succeeded · mention in the middle of Chinese copy (V2RunTrace.tsx:48). Map both enums through runTrace.status.* / runTrace.trigger.* keys and keep the raw value only as a fallback for unknown enums.
Zero clause. With omittedTurns: 0 the page reads "0 turns and 2 tool calls are omitted" in en, and "省略了 0 轮和 2 次工具调用" in zh. Drop a clause whose count is zero: use two keys, or i18next _zero/plural forms.
aria-label is English-only.aria-label="Run trace" (V2RunTrace.tsx:40) is hard-coded. Use t('runTrace.title'), or aria-labelledby the h1.
Fine as is: no horizontal overflow at 390 in either language (document = viewport). The long call id wraps instead of clipping. The dl collapses cleanly on phone. The retention copy reads well in both languages. The refusal retry passed.
Non-blocking: the retention line Cards: 30-day default. Trace persists. repeats on every linked message. Consider showing it only on the trace page, or as the link's title.
discussion_r4370292116, approval provenance: fixed in 3e834e0. The proposeAction test passes runId and asserts the real writer/create and post boundaries. A separate real-Mongo ApprovalAction save/reload/decline test pins the schema and state-transition persistence.
CodeRabbit review's radius-token comment: fixed in 3e834e0 using the existing large/small v2 tokens, preserving 6/4px geometry.
CodeRabbit review's native-path test nitpick: fixed in 3e834e0. Normal post, approval proposal, fallback summary, local handoff and failed-hosted diagnostic each assert runId. Focused follow-up checks: 56/56 (24 approval, 27 native web/post/proposal/fallback/failure, 4 handoff, 1 real-Mongo persistence).
UX HOLD review 5642702527 is addressed in 6d41f36: desktop acts 32px, phone acts 44px under the shared 760px breakpoint; translated status/trigger with unknown-enum fallback; zero omission clauses removed; section named by the translated h1. Run-trace unit tests 9/9, targeted layout 1/1, Chinese spacing 7/7 and frontend typecheck pass. The isolated-browser proof now includes the real V2MessageRow link, English/Chinese at 390/1440: no overflow, exact 32/44px acts, localized summary/region, nonzero-only disclosure and refusal/retry control.
New-head CI and reviewer renewal remain required. Raw inline reply POSTs are unavailable to this seat, so this comment quotes each discussion link.
How I checked: a production build of 6d41f36 served with a local fixture (no calls to any live host; 0 external requests). I rendered the trace page (ok run, a failed/task.assigned/turns-only variant, and the denied run) plus the pod transcript with two run-linked messages, en and zh-CN, at 1440 and 390. I also clicked the link in each of the four renders; each one opened /v2/pods/<pod>/runs/<runId>.
Fixed, measured:
Act heights. At 1440, Back to pod, Try again and the message-row link are all 32. At 390 they are all 44. Buttons use 4 px radius, and the summary and call cards use 6 px.
zh enums. zh renders 已完成 · 提及 and 失败 · 任务分配, so the dotted task.assigned key resolves and the raw-value fallback isn't triggered.
Zero clause. With omittedToolCalls: 0 the page reads "2 turns are omitted" in en and "省略了2轮" in zh; the both-counts copy is unchanged.
Labelled region.aria-labelledby="run-trace-title" resolves to "Run trace" in en and 运行轨迹 in zh.
Also fine: document width equals viewport width on every frame (no x-scroller), nothing renders under 11 px, and there is no cobalt fill.
What holds:
The link renders above the message text in a plain message row.<V2RunTraceLink> is inserted right after the header (V2MessageRow.tsx:686), so the row reads: author → "View run trace · Cards: 30-day default…" → the agent's actual message. At 1440 the link line sits 18 px under the name, and the content starts after it. At 390 the link becomes a full-width 44 px row plus a retention line, which pushes the message text 64 px down. A screen reader also announces the link before the message. The three card branches (approval, BYO handoff, gig) already put it after the card. Move the plain-row call to after the content block and the PR card, before reactions, so both paths agree that the trace is a footnote to what the agent said, not a heading over it.
Non-blocking (fold in if cheap):
Tool-call outcomes are still raw in zh: ok · 241 ms, 结果 ok, refused, recorded, unavailable. This is the same class as item 2, applied to a third enum.
The earlier note still stands: the retention line repeats under every linked message.
Next gate: re-render the transcript leg at the new head. If only the call site moves, the trace page needs no re-render.
The outside-diff CodeRabbit finding in the 598e021 review is fixed: native dispatch forwards its server-owned run through dispatchHostedBrokerTool → callTool → proposeAction. The approval schema, create/post boundary, save/reload and state transition preserve it.
A seat grant can put the approval in the credential owner's private room. The server-bound payload.runPodId now preserves the original pod beside runId, so the trace link resolves correctly even there. Both client payload fields are stripped; neither comes from model arguments or the HTTP body. The trace endpoint still requires access to the original pod, and receiving an approval grants none. Existing same-pod cards without runPodId keep their current route.
UX HOLD at 6d41f36: the plain-message trace link now follows content, attachments and PR cards, before reactions. The three structured-card branches already follow their card. Chinese tool outcomes are translated as well.
Verification: 134 focused backend checks (native/projection/broker, writer, approval service and real-Mongo model), 19 message-row + 9 trace + 7 Chinese-spacing checks. Supported frontend/backend typechecks and scoped lint have zero errors. Removing broker run forwarding and permitting forged origin fields fail the intended assertions; restored controls pass. Four refreshed real-component en/zh 390/1440 frames show content before link, original-pod routing, 32/44px acts and no overflow. Pod proof: 1792927407426-309276938.zip.
New-head CI/CR and reviewer renewals remain required. This comment supplements the earlier full triage at comment 6396855615.

Record a refused message post as failed.
When the consecutive-post cap refuses commonly_post_message, AgentMessageService.postMessage returns { success: false, refused: true }. dispatchTool wraps that response without result.error, so this line records outcome: 'ok' although no message was posted. Propagate the refusal as a tool error before recording the outcome.

Follow-up at 5980903: both current CodeRabbit findings are addressed.
Native commonly_post_message now returns ok:false/posted:false plus message_post_refused when the writer refuses. The stored call outcome is failed; successful posts remain ok. The native-turn suite passes 29/29. Removing this guard makes the refusal assertion fail (1 failed, 28 passed); restored control passes.
The origin-pod regression now exercises a real approval-card payload and asserts the approval branch plus original-pod trace href. The separate plain-message test pins the link after content. MessageRow passes 20/20.
Scoped native lint has zero errors (existing warnings). The supported backend tsc:check is the typecheck gate; the broad tsconfig includes pre-existing script errors.
Prior layout and provenance proof remains applicable: this delta changes refusal reporting and tests only.

UX-GATE: PASS @ 5980903 — TASK-499 run trace: the trace link now sits after the message content in plain rows, and tool outcomes read in zh
I re-rendered both legs on a production build of 5980903, served by my local mock API: no live calls, 0 external requests. The page leg is in en and zh at 1440/390, covering the ok, failed/task.assigned and denied traces. The row leg is the pod transcript.
My 6d41f36 blocker is fixed.<V2RunTraceLink> moved from just after the header to after the content and PR cards, before reactions. In every capture it is now the last block of .v2-msg__body: at 1440 the link runs 288→320 and the body ends at 319; at 390 it runs 359→423 and the body ends at 423. The message text comes first, then "View run trace" / 查看运行轨迹, then the retention line. The three card branches already sat in that order and are unchanged apart from runPodId.
Acts: the link is 90×32 at 1440 (zh 86) and 326×44 at 390. Back to pod is 32 at 1440 and 44 at 390. Retry is 32 at 1440 and 44 at 390. Ink, 14 px, no fill. Nothing in the trace is under 11 px, scrollWidth == clientWidth, and there are no horizontal scrollers.
zh tool outcomes, which was my non-blocking 6d41 note: 成功 / 已拒绝 / 不可用 now render in both the call line and the trail's 结果. The runTrace.outcomes map covers every value the backend emits (ok, failed, refused, pending, pending_approval, unavailable). The only raw word left on my capture is recorded, which is a value from my own fixture, not a backend outcome.
Clicking the link navigates to /v2/pods/<pod>/runs/<id> in all four row captures.
This gate does not cover:
the backend runPodId / refused-post trace changes (no visual surface beyond the link's href);

Tier 2 security gate, #2686 (run trace links, TASK-499) at 5980903. Head check: OPEN, not draft, base main.
Lily's question: does the trace link carry no grant or credential detail to a viewer outside the origin pod?
Result: not for global admins. HOLD on one defect; the rest of the surface holds.
What holds:
Route access. backend/routes/runTraces.ts loads the pod named by the URL's podId and calls DMService.canViewPod(userId, pod). A null pod or a non-member non-admin gets 404 trace_not_found. Viewers outside the origin pod who are not admins get no trace.
Run scoping. AgentRun is found with { _id: runId, podId }, so a run cannot be read through a pod it does not belong to.
Content. The AgentRun select lists metadata, token counts, tool name, elapsedMs, callId and outcome only. No args, results or LLM text are loaded. The response is no-store.
Client fields. Server-side, agentMessageService.ts deletes messagePayload.runPodId on the client path and sets it only from options.runPodId. The server binds the origin pod; the client cannot.
What fails:
backend/models/ToolCall.ts listRunReferences returns grantId and credentialOwnerId for each tool call. runTraces.ts sends that whole record as trail on every tool call of the run. frontend/src/v2/components/V2RunTrace.tsx renders both values: the grant id and the credential owner's id.
canViewPod has a global-admin bypass (dmService.ts lines 491-493: "Global admins get read access to any pod"). The route inherits it. So a global admin who is not a member of the origin pod reads the grant id and credential owner id for that pod's runs. That is the literal case Lily asked about, and the answer is yes, that detail reaches a viewer outside the origin pod.
canViewPod also has the §3.7 agent-dm fan-out (dmService.ts lines 506-512). When the origin pod is an agent-dm, any user who shares a pod with a DM member passes the check and reads the same grant and owner fields. That viewer is outside the origin pod too. Sable reported the same path in the pod (85658).
The bypass is intentional for pod contents (CLAUDE.md). Grant ids and credential-owner ids are authorization metadata, not content, so the bypass does not cover them by its own rationale.
Required fix (for the PR author): in runTraces.ts, drop grantId and credentialOwnerId from the response for any viewer who is not a member of the origin pod. This covers both the admin bypass and the agent-dm fan-out. The rest of the trail (callId, tool, outcome, at, durationMs) can stay. Add route tests: a global-admin non-member and a fan-out viewer each get the run with no grant or owner fields; a member gets the owner field only if the product owner confirms that display is intended.
Judgment for the product owner, not a blocker on its own: a member of the origin pod sees credentialOwnerId and grantId. The scope §8 comment in ToolCall.ts says "whose credential ran" is meant to be visible in the trail, so the member-level display may be deliberate. Please confirm that before the frontend ships.
Not reviewed here: the frontend link (V2RunTraceLink) beyond its use of runId and podId; the approval card flow in approvalActionService; the grant broker. CI and CodeRabbit are reported green by the author and Lily; I did not run the suites.
Rhea review 5643479001 and Sable's follow-up are fixed. The route now projects the trail response: only actual origin-pod members receive grantId and credentialOwnerId. Non-member global admins and agent-DM fan-out viewers retain the allowed trace metadata without either identity. The view hides withheld fields. Member attribution remains as requested by TASK-499.
The route suite now uses real DMService.canViewPod and Mongo records instead of a membership-only mock. Both non-member regressions failed on 5980903 (2 failed, 7 passed), then passed after the route change (9/9). The existing member control still receives both fields. English/Chinese withheld-field view regressions also failed before the view fix (2 failed, 9 passed), then passed (11/11). Supported backend/frontend typechecks pass; changed-file lint has zero errors, two existing JSX-extension warnings.
Fresh isolated Chrome component fixtures at 390/1440 in en/zh have no horizontal overflow, keep 32/44 acts, and show only the outcome when authorization identities are withheld. This proves layout, not a production walk. PR body and run-traces.md now specify 4,096 UTF-16 code units for response text.
Please renew the Tier 2 gates at this exact head after CI.

Tier 2 security re-gate, #2686 (run trace links, TASK-499) at 0f0d8cf. Head check: OPEN, not draft, base main. Supersedes my HOLD at 5980903.
The defect from 5980903 is closed. In backend/routes/runTraces.ts, grantId and credentialOwnerId are now spread into each trail entry only when isOriginMember is true. isOriginMember compares the viewer to pod.members, which is loaded lean and unpopulated, so the comparison is ObjectId-to-string. Global-admin non-members and §3.7 agent-dm observers therefore get callId, tool, outcome, at and durationMs only. canViewPod is unchanged in this PR, so the admin bypass and fan-out remain as before for pod contents.
Strip path: the conditional spread is the only place the two fields enter the response. Non-member trail objects have no grantId or credentialOwnerId keys at all.
Frontend: V2RunTrace renders grant and owner only when !== undefined, so the withheld fields produce no label and no "not recorded" claim (en and zh-CN tests).
Route tests (runTraces.test.js): the test.each covers a global-admin non-member and an agent-dm observer, asserting 200, no-store, the exact trail shape, and a body regex over grantId, credentialOwnerId, PRIVATE_, argsDigest. Cross-pod references still never join a foreign trail. Unauthenticated, non-member and bad-id requests give 401 or 404.
Body: the caps paragraph now says "4096 UTF-16 code units" for response text, matching the code.
Non-blocking notes:
listRunReferences still reads grantId and credentialOwnerId for every call and then discards them for non-members. That is data minimization, not a leak. Selecting the columns only for origin members would be cleaner.
Member-level display of credentialOwnerId and grantId is the product judgment I flagged at 5980903. It is not a blocker on its own. Lily should confirm it before the frontend ships.
CI at this head: Backend tests 2/3 and 3/3, Backend typecheck and lint, Frontend tests, Service Tests, Chart Lint and E2E were still pending when I read the rollup. I did not run the suites locally. The press checks these.
Re-gated at this head per rule 32. I measured my own build, not the attached proof zip.
Delta over the frontend since my PASS @ 5980903: V2RunTrace.tsx only. The trail type makes grantId and credentialOwnerId optional, and each <dt>/<dd> pair renders only when its key is present. V2MessageRow, V2RunTraceLink, CSS and locales are unchanged, so the transcript leg carries from 5980903.
Build: .dev/wt2686 detached at 0f0d8cf, served bundle index-ZCnkrVXF, V2RunTrace-CWF1d0Ri (it contains both !==void 0 guards). Fixture API only, with 0 external requests.
Withheld arm: the fixture run with both keys deleted from every trail, which is the route's non-member shape (keys omitted, not null). Each trail dl reads Outcome | ok and Outcome | refused (zh 结果 | 成功, 结果 | 已拒绝). No grant or owner id string appears anywhere on the page. The call cards shrink 210→154 at 1440 and 338→206 at 390, with no empty rows left behind.
Positive control, the member shape at the same head: Grant, Credential owner (Not recorded / 未记录 when null) and Outcome all render as before.
At every arm: doc scrollWidth equals clientWidth (1440/1440, 390/390), and no text is under 11 px.
Non-blocking, a design note rather than a defect: a non-member admin gets no cue that the fields were withheld. That's acceptable for an audit observer; raise it only if admins report confusion.

TASK-499
Link native hosted agent messages/cards to a durable, read-only run trace and bound AgentRun storage.
Behavior
payload.runId. AgentMessageService strips authored provenance, preserves card fields, and stamps its internal run identity. Native approval proposals retain that identity through card state changes./v2/pods/:podId/runs/:runIdreads/api/pods/:podId/runs/:runId. The reader uses current pod-read access and constrains both the AgentRun and every PostgreSQL call reference to that pod. Unknown/denied traces return 404; PG outages return 503. No args, results, LLM prose, credential material or argument digests are returned.Verification
Targeted tests only, on Node 22. No full local suite or image build.
Read-only trace access follows the existing
DMService.canViewPodpolicy, including its admin/agent-DM visibility semantics. Authorization identities require actual origin-pod membership independently of that read policy. Card deletion and access loss do not bypass authorization.TASK-497 owns native OpenUI payload parity and write validation; TASK-498 can reuse
