task-bound connector grant enforcement (TASK-288) - #2699
Adds an optional grant binding {taskId, podId, endsOn}, the shape record-v1 §2 and ADR-033 §5.1 define. Attenuation inherits it. endsOn is stored as task.done. That is the only value v1 accepts: record-v1 also defines expiresAt, but this task requires a bound grant to end when its task closes, so mint refuses expiresAt with invalid_task_binding. A grant is usable only while the authenticated caller holds the task's live claim and is a current pod member (the CTO ruled this the v1 boundary, 2026-10-25). Grant expiry is still a ceiling. Unbound grants behave as before.
All four writers that mark a task done (complete, status PATCH, GitHub merge, onboarding) increment a monotonic task epoch in the same write and run close revocation. I re-ran this census after rebasing onto main 28c1e51d0, and no new writer has appeared. Reopening a task cannot revive an old grant, even when the close hook missed a grant inserted mid-close. Close revokes bound descendants and stores revocationReason: task.done, the record-v1 reason.
Claim writes now store the authenticated User ID separately from a display key such as default. Name-only legacy renewals still work on the board, but they don't carry grant authority. Status release, the sweep and provenance-based restoration all clear that authority.
Records (new at b87585712)
TASK-513's writer is on main (#2772), so the lines this PR used to defer are written now, through recordService.emitRecord, on the bound task's chain:
grant.issued comes from mintGrant, after every post-insert check has passed. It carries scope, target, expiry, binding and issuedBy from authentication: the connection owner on mint, or the delegating agent, recorded as an agent actor, on attenuation.
grant.revoked {grantIds, reason: task.done} comes from the close hook, as system:board. It names only the grants its own write revoked. Every close writer queues task.done first (ADR-033 §4).
Unbound issuance and the cascade/manual/expired revocations stay with the TASK-513 grant writers: an unbound grant has no task chain. Nothing is written for a pod outside RECORD_V1_PODS. A failed append never undoes enforcement.
Rebase onto main 28c1e51d0
Three files conflicted with main's record emission: tasksApi.ts (imports), githubGigService.ts and starterTaskService.ts. Main's per-task merge loop, MERGE_EVIDENCE_TEXT and recordTaskTransition are kept. This PR's grantEpoch bump, claimedByUserId: null and onTaskClosed sit inside them. git range-diff shows only those resolutions on the first commit, and the other three commits are unchanged.
Verification at b87585712
Backend tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.typescheck.json: exit 0. eslint on the changed .ts files: 0 errors. The new test file: 0 errors.
Node 22: roomGrantRecord (new, 8 tests) and tasksApi.taskGrantClose (8 tests) pass. Every record line is checked by the vendored verifyRecord.
Mutations, each applied alone and then restored. Each turns only its own test red:
the issuance call removed (2 tests)
the read-back's revokedAt filter removed
the explicit agent actor removed
the attenuation issuer not passed
each of the four close writers reordered to run the hook before task.done (4 mutants, each failing on the order)
The host's load average was 91, so a local full backend run would time out unrelated suites, as it did at the previous head. CI's backend shards are the full measurement. Locally, the 40 unit suites that import a changed module pass, 684 tests. One of them, hostedMcpConnect.storedRow, timed out starting mongod in the batch run and passed 12/12 when run alone.
Still true: holding the claim doesn't attest to what an argument is for, and it can't tell two concurrent runs of one agent apart. A non-author walk of issuance, allowed use, closure, refused replay and the exported records comes before public activation.

Walkthrough
This change adds task-bound room grants and checks them against task state, authenticated claimant identity, and grant epochs. Task completion paths advance the epoch and invoke grant revocation. Tests cover minting, attenuation, projection, grant use, claim changes, completion, and task-chain records.

Do not let close-hook failures suppress completion fan-out.
The task write commits done and increments grantEpoch before onTaskClosed. If revokeTaskGrants rejects, the complete and PATCH routes skip attention resolution, socket updates, and agent notifications. The merged-PR and starter flows skip their socket updates. Later completion attempts do not reliably re-enter these paths: /complete rejects an already-done task, and the service writers match only open tasks.
The epoch fence still blocks bound-grant use because the epoch changes before the hook. This is a delivery and attention failure, not a missed security-enforcement check. Catch the hook error, run the remaining fan-out, then preserve the error for the route or caller to report. Apply the same pattern to all four completion flows without moving close revocation after the fan-out.

Add coverage for the seat-target binding access check.
ensureTargetAccess does not check membership for a seat target. The binding-specific check at backend/routes/grants.ts:414-416 checks the bound pod only for seat grants. Existing task-bound tests use pod targets, so they do not exercise this branch.

Run the board side effects even when onTaskClosed fails.
The done write has already committed when await onTaskClosed(task) runs. Assume revokeTaskGrants throws, for example on a transient Mongo error. Then:
the route returns 500;
resolveTaskAttention, emitTaskUpdated and notifyAgents never run;
a retry returns 409 "Task is already done".
Handoff cards stay open, and the board and pod agents never see the close. githubGigService.completeTaskForMergedPull has the same ordering.
Grant enforcement does not depend on the hook. assertBoundTaskOpen rejects a done or reopened task through grantEpoch. The hook can therefore run after the notifications without weakening enforcement. A hook failure then no longer suppresses the notifications. The "revoked before returning" contract still holds.
Apply the same ordering in the PATCH route and in completeTaskForMergedPull.
As per path instructions, a guard must fail toward over-delivery, "never toward a message or event nobody sees".

Heads-up from TASK-513, not a review. #2772 (TASK-559, draft) edits the same spots in backend/routes/tasksApi.ts as this PR: right after the claim CAS's const { task, previous: preClaim } = result;, after completion's emitTaskUpdated, and in PATCH. It also edits kernelWorkSweepService.ts, after if (won). In each place it calls recordTaskTransition(...) on the committed write, so whichever PR lands second rebases. The claim call reads preClaim.status and preClaim.claimedBy to tell a renewal from a fresh claim. If your second legacy-renewal CAS sets result, keep previous on that path too.
After both land, record-v1 §2 says task.done ends every grant bound to that task. That is a grant.revoked {grantIds, reason: "task.done"} line in the task's chain, written right after task.done. onTaskClosed is the natural caller: emitRecord({ podId, taskId }, "grant.revoked/task.done/<taskObjectId>/<completedAt>", [grantRevokedLine(ids, "task.done", BOARD_ACTOR)]). The line builder lands with TASK-560.
#2699 (comment) (emit grant.revoked on close): not fixing in this PR, because the writer doesn't exist yet. The server-side seats.record writer is TASK-513, and it isn't on main. The spec is (record-v1, #2739), but nothing on the backend writes it. Adding an emitter here would make a second record writer, and ADR-033 and the row both rule that out ("one format"). What this PR does instead is store what the writer needs: revokedAt, revocationReason: task.done (renamed from task.closed at 1c9cd5a, because the verifier rejects that reason), and the binding. When TASK-513 lands I'll rebase onto it and wire close to emit task.done, then grant.revoked {grantIds, reason: task.done}.
#2699 (comment) (emit grant.issued from mintGrant): not fixing in this PR, for the same reason. mintGrant already persists what the writer needs: the binding {taskId, podId, endsOn: task.done}, taskEpoch, parentGrantId, the scope fields and expiresAt.
The PR stays a draft until both emissions are wired to TASK-513's writer, and the body lists them as blocking clearance.
Skip the close work when a PATCH sets status to done on a task that is already done.
The update filter has no status predicate for seat callers. An already-done task still matches, so the handler increments grantEpoch again and calls onTaskClosed again. The onTaskClosed comment says a retry "finds the task done and never reaches this hook again." This path breaks that assumption.
The database epoch still advances on a repeat. That does not weaken the fence, because no grant can bind to a closed task. The guard below prevents the repeated in-process close work and the second revocation call.

…with reason task.done (record-v1, ADR-033 §5.1)
Rebased onto main after #2739 put record-v1 on main. The spec's revoke
reasons are task.done|expired|cascade|manual, so the draft's task.closed
would be rejected by the verifier. The binding now stores endsOn; v1
accepts only task.done and refuses expiresAt, because this task requires
a bound grant to end when its task closes.

The close write moves grantEpoch, so the epoch fence refuses every bound
grant from that instant; the revocation write only records it. Throwing
after the commit skipped attention/notify and could not be retried,
because the retry finds the task done. Log instead. The status-vocabulary
suite mocks Task, so it now mocks the hook and asserts the done

TASK-513's writer is on main (#2772), so the two lines the plan deferred are
written now. Both land on the bound task's own chain.
- mintGrant writes grant.issued once every post-insert check has passed, with
scope, target, expiry, binding and issuedBy from authentication: the
connection owner on mint, the delegating agent (as an agent actor) on
attenuation.
- The close hook writes grant.revoked {grantIds, reason: task.done} as
system:board, naming only the grants its own write revoked (read back by
that write's revokedAt).
- All four close writers now queue task.done before the hook runs, so the
chain reads task.done, then grant.revoked.
Unbound issuance and the cascade/manual/expired revocations stay with the
TASK-513 grant writers. Nothing is written outside RECORD_V1_PODS.

Opus gate (Tier 2, auth and record) at b875857: PASS, 0 blocking.
Close writers. Task status reaches done in exactly four places: /complete, PATCH, githubGigService.completeTaskForMergedPull and starterTaskService.completeStarterTask. A sweep of every Task writer under routes/, services/ and controllers/ found no fifth. Each one calls recordTaskTransition before onTaskClosed. recordTaskTransition is synchronous into emitRecord, and emitRecord chains per (pod, task) in call order, so task.done is queued before the hook's first await. PATCH always records here: a status write sets writeTime and takes the pre-image, and pre-image.grantEpoch + 1 is the post-close epoch. The other three read new: true, so closedEpoch is the same value everywhere. tasksApi.taskGrantClose's test.each pins grant.issued, then task.done, then grant.revoked for all four writers, through verifyRecord.
The revoked line. It reads back on the binding tuple, this write's own revokedAt and reason: 'task.done'. A grant revoked by an earlier close, by a manual or cascade revoke, or in another pod is never named, and "second close after reopen" covers the earlier-close case.
Auth. The epoch fence and the live-claim check run over the whole lineage. Grant authority needs claimedByUserId (or a legacy claimedBy that is an ObjectId), never a display key. Every status path away from claimed clears it, and the name-only renewal fallback keeps it null. Attenuation can't drop or change a parent's binding. The broker projection now selects the lineage fields that assertGrantUsable reads.
CI is green on every job, and every CodeRabbit thread is answered.
Non-blocking.markMintedGrantRejected writes the same revocationReason: 'task.done', and it sets revokedAt without a revokedAt: null guard. That leaves two edges when a mint races the close:
If the rejection lands in the same millisecond as the hook's write, the readback names a grant this write did not revoke.
If the rejection overwrites revokedAt before the readback, the line drops a grant this write did revoke.
Both edges only touch a grant that never got grant.issued. Guarding the rejection with revokedAt: null closes the second edge. Revoking per grant with findOneAndUpdate({ grantId, revokedAt: null }), and naming only the rows that come back, makes the line exact. A task's grant count is small, so either fix is cheap.
Separately, a PATCH from done to done bumps grantEpoch and reruns the hook with no task.done line of its own. That is harmless, and it doubles as a repair when a revocation write failed.

Opus gate (Tier 2, auth and record) at b875857: 0 blocking. All four close writers queue task.done before onTaskClosed, and the grant.revoked line names only grants carrying this write's revokedAt. Full reasoning and the non-blocking notes are in review 5721892213.

Tier 2 gate on TASK-288 (task-bound connector grants) at b875857. Read-through of the production diff; I did not run the suite.
What I checked:
Epoch fence. Every close writer bumps grantEpoch in the same write that sets done. I grepped the non-test backend at this head: the only writers that set a task to done are the complete route, the PATCH route, githubGigService.completeTaskForMergedPull and starterTaskService.completeStarterTask, and all four carry $inc grantEpoch. The reopen at tasksApi.ts:352 moves done to pending, and it does not need a bump. In PATCH the pre-image is returned (new: false), so the local grantEpoch + 1 matches the stored value.
Refusal before use. assertGrantUsable walks the lineage through assertBoundTaskOpen, which refuses a closed task or a stale epoch. assertTaskContext then requires a live, unexpired claim whose claimedByUserId equals the agent. A legacy display-name claim gets nothing.
Name-only claims. PATCH's whitelist does not include claimedBy, so a member cannot write a holder through PATCH. The claim route's fallback renewal sets claimedByUserId: null, so a display-key renewal never gains grant authority.
Mint race. mintGrant checks the task after insertion and marks the row revoked with task_closed, so a close that lands between the epoch read and the insert is fenced.
Close hook. onTaskClosed swallows and logs its own write failure. The close stays committed, and the epoch refuses the grants regardless.
Projection. selectLiveGrantsForIdentities passes grant into assertGrantUsable, which accepts it, so bound grants are filtered per agent and not by an unhandled error.
Non-blocking:
attenuateGrant lets an unbound parent's child take a task binding. That only narrows the child, so it is allowed, and the test at roomGrantTaskBinding.test.js:572 pins it.
The task-context check in assertTaskContext runs after the audience check and before the tool check. That order is fine, but the refusal code a caller sees for a claimless agent outside the audience is not_in_audience, not task_claim_required. That is intended, I think, and is not a defect.

TASK-288: task-bound connector grants
Adds an optional grant binding
{taskId, podId, endsOn}, the shape record-v1 §2 and ADR-033 §5.1 define. Attenuation inherits it.endsOnis stored astask.done. That is the only value v1 accepts: record-v1 also definesexpiresAt, but this task requires a bound grant to end when its task closes, so mint refusesexpiresAtwithinvalid_task_binding. I re-ran this census after rebasing onto main
28c1e51d0, and no new writer has appeared. Reopening a task cannot revive an old grant, even when the close hook missed a grant inserted mid-close. Close revokes bound descendants and storesrevocationReason: task.done, the record-v1 reason.Claim writes now store the authenticated User ID separately from a display key such as
default. Name-only legacy renewals still work on the board, but they don't carry grant authority. Status release, the sweep and provenance-based restoration all clear that authority.Records (new at
b87585712)TASK-513's writer is on main (#2772), so the lines this PR used to defer are written now, through
recordService.emitRecord, on the bound task's chain:grant.issuedcomes frommintGrant, after every post-insert check has passed. It carries scope, target, expiry, binding andissuedByfrom authentication: the connection owner on mint, or the delegating agent, recorded as an agent actor, on attenuation.grant.revoked {grantIds, reason: task.done}comes from the close hook, assystem:board. It names only the grants its own write revoked. Every close writer queuestask.donefirst (ADR-033 §4).Unbound issuance and the
cascade/manual/expiredrevocations stay with the TASK-513 grant writers: an unbound grant has no task chain. Nothing is written for a pod outsideRECORD_V1_PODS. A failed append never undoes enforcement.Rebase onto main
28c1e51d0Three files conflicted with main's record emission:
tasksApi.ts(imports),githubGigService.tsandstarterTaskService.ts. Main's per-task merge loop,MERGE_EVIDENCE_TEXTandrecordTaskTransitionare kept. This PR'sgrantEpochbump, claimedByUserId: nullandonTaskClosedsit inside them.git range-diffshows only those resolutions on the first commit, and the other three commits are unchanged.Verification at
b87585712tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.typescheck.json: exit 0. eslint on the changed.tsfiles: 0 errors. The new test file: 0 errors.roomGrantRecord(new, 8 tests) andtasksApi.taskGrantClose(8 tests) pass. Every record line is checked by the vendoredverifyRecord.revokedAtfilter removedtask.done(4 mutants, each failing on the order)hostedMcpConnect.storedRow, timed out starting mongod in the batch run and passed 12/12 when run alone.Still true: holding the claim doesn't attest to what an argument is for, and it can't tell two concurrent runs of one agent apart. A non-author walk of issuance, allowed use, closure, refused replay and the exported records comes before public activation.
