TASK-513 slice 2 (TASK-560). Room grants and brokered connector calls now write record-v1 lines to their pod's taskless chain, following ADR-033's B1–B5 table field for field. No line carries argsDigest (CTO launch rule, ADR-033 §8 q9).

Rebased on main after #2772 (TASK-559) merged as eaa32dd7. Two commits: the slice-2 lines (0dccb058), and 93a17aff, which makes B3 and B4 read the decider the approval row stored (#2785, TASK-512) and adds the agent-DM observer read case from Lumen's #2772 gate. Everything is still off unless the pod is listed in RECORD_V1_PODS.

What writes what

  • Broker trail write (recordCall) writes B1 refused, B2 parked and B5 executed:
    • B2 is asked of the credential owner, on its card.
    • A trail row that carries an approval id and isn't the park is an approved call's run. The resolver records that, so it's skipped here and each call ends once.
  • resolveApproval writes B3 after the ending is saved: the owner's decision, then tool.update from the saved ending. Expiry, at decide time or in the sweep, writes B4. Both read decidedBy/decidedByRole from the approval row, never the caller. A row whose stored decider is missing or doesn't fit its outcome (B3 credential-owner, B4 policy) writes no lines and logs a warning: an audit gap, not a guessed decider.
  • Grants:
    • grant.issued comes from the two routes that mint, because the mint itself has no issuer. The owner is named as a person, an attenuating agent as an agent.
    • revokeGrant now returns what it moved, through RoomGrant.revokeCascadeMoved. That gives one line per pod: manual when the grant went alone, cascade (ancestor first) when descendants went with it.
    • A grant first seen expired at use is revoked once, by the server (system/commonly). Nothing sweeps expiry, so a grant nobody uses again gets no line. Per R2 that's an audit gap, not access.
  • Pod-target grants only. A seat grant's target is a seat and its card sits in a DM, so it names no pod and writes nothing until a pod is ruled for it.
  • GET /api/pods/:podId/record serves the pod chain, under the task route's gate.

Evidence

  • grantRecord.realPg.test.js, on real PG16 + Mongo, through the real broker, real approval resolver and real grant service. Only GitHub, the confinement and outsider guards, card posting, sockets and event delivery are stubbed. It covers:

    • issue, attenuate, cascade revoke and expiry (written once across two checks);
    • B1, B5, and B2 → B3 declined, with exactly three terminal decisions for three calls;
    • B2 → B3 approved and run (completed), and B2 → B4 in the sweep;
    • the pod-chain gate (outsider 404, admin non-member 403);
    • a seat grant writing no chain at all, with the pilot gate open everywhere.

    Every read verifies. argsDigest and sha256: are absent from JSONL and OTLP.

  • The stored-decider guard: 8 cases (missing, null, wrong role for the outcome, policy paired with a person's role) write nothing. Dropping the role check, dropping the policy pairing, or taking the decider from anywhere but the row each turns a case red.

  • Read route (real PG + Mongo): an agent-DM observer, who passes canViewPod through the §3.7 fan-out, gets 403 on both the task and pod record reads, and readChain is never called. Removing the membership check turns it red.

  • Wiring is asserted in the existing harnesses: every broker trail row reaches recordBrokerCall once, with the same call id and outcome. Approve, decline and both expiries reach recordApprovalOutcome once, a lost race or refused decider not at all. Both mint routes name the right issuer.

  • Perturbations, each restored:

    • Dropping the approval-id skip doubles the approved call and goes red.
    • Removing the resolver emit goes red.
    • Forcing manual goes red.
    • Treating a seat target as a pod goes red in the service and unit suites. It only did once those cases ran with the gate open; before that, the pilot gate hid it.
  • Local: 7 record suites / 68 tests, plus the grant, broker, approval and task suites, 538 tests. Three tasks.* service suites hit 30 s timeouts in one 34-suite parallel run and pass serially (35/35). Typecheck and lint are clean for these files.

Residuals

  • Seat-grant calls are unrecorded until a pod is ruled for them.
  • Grants carry no task binding, so every line here is taskless. TASK-288 (task-bound connector grant enforcement (TASK-288) #2699) adds the binding, and onTaskClosed should then write grant.revoked {reason: task.done} into the task's chain.
  • The decision-card path (chooseDecision on a card tied to a parked call, ADR-033 D5) isn't on main, so it has no line yet.
  • grants.mint.test.js failed 7 cases (404 instead of 400) once, on its first run after my edit. It passed in 4 runs since, and the original file passes against this code. Not reproduced.

Tier 2. I don't self-gate.

Do not derive leaseUntil from a PATCH.

PATCH does not set claimExpiresAt. The task passed here is the pre-image with fieldUpdates applied. A task that was blocked after a claim keeps its old claimExpiresAt, because the block write never clears it. A later PATCH blocked → claimed then writes task.claimed with data.leaseUntil set to a past timestamp. The record is hash-chained, so the wrong value is permanent. The line also asserts a lease that this write never granted.

Pass only the identity fields so no lease data is emitted for PATCH claims:

Queue the grant lookup with the record emit.

The detached lookup is not part of the per-chain queue. A later emit can overtake the approval line, and flushRecordWrites can finish before the lookup queues it. Move the lookup into emitRecord’s async inputs function and return [] when the grant does not match.

Later emits on the same chain will wait for this lookup instead of overtaking it.

Queue the PATCH record before awaiting attention work.

If a PATCH blocks a claimed task, the Mongo write commits before recordTaskAttention runs. While that call is pending, another request can claim the blocked task and queue task.claimed. The PATCH then queues task.released, so the chain records the transitions in reverse order. Queue the PATCH line at the first post-commit point, before the attention awaits, and add a real-PostgreSQL test that delays attention work while a second request claims the task. As per coding guidelines, check “Async races: concurrent calls, double-firing, out-of-order completion.”

TASK-513 slice 2, on top of TASK-559. Room grants and brokered connector
calls write record-v1 lines to their pod's taskless chain, using ADR-033's
B1–B5 table field for field. No line carries argsDigest (CTO launch rule,
ADR-033 §8 q9).

- B1 refused, B2 parked (asked of the credential owner, on its card) and
  B5 executed come from the broker's trail write. A trail row that carries
  an approval id and is not the park is an approved call's run; the
  resolver records that, so each call gets one terminal decision.
- B3 is written by resolveApproval once the ending is saved: the owner's
  decision, then tool.update from the ending. B4 is written on expiry at
  decide time and in the sweep.
- grant.issued comes from the two routes that mint: the owner as a person,
  an attenuating agent as an agent. revokeGrant now returns what it moved
  (RoomGrant.revokeCascadeMoved), giving manual or cascade per pod. A grant
  found expired at use is revoked once, by the server.
- Pod-target grants only. A seat grant names no pod and writes nothing.
- GET /api/pods/:podId/record serves the pod chain under the task route's
  gate.

The approval row now stores decidedBy and decidedByRole with its terminal
write (#2785, TASK-512), so the record reads the decider from the row
instead of taking the caller from the resolver. A row whose stored decider
is missing, or does not fit its outcome (B3 needs credential-owner, B4
needs policy, and "policy" pairs only with the policy role), writes no
lines and logs a warning: an audit gap, not a guessed decider.

Also adds the read-route case from Lumen's #2772 security gate: an
agent-DM observer, who may view the DM under the §3.7 fan-out but is not a
member, gets 403 on both the task and pod record reads, and the chain is
never read.

Correct the claim about what revokeGrant returns.

The text says revokeGrant "returns what it moved". In backend/services/roomGrantService.ts, revokeGrant returns Promise<number>, which is moved.length. RoomGrant.revokeCascadeMoved returns the moved rows. revokeGrant passes those rows to recordGrantsRevoked and does not return them.

Do not drop the record lines when the agent lookup fails.

agentById awaits findById(...).lean() without a guard. This runs inside the async factory passed to emitRecord. If Mongo rejects, the factory throws. emitRecord catches the error and logs it. The whole B1, B2, B5 or B3/B4 line set is then lost, although the trail row already carries the agentUserId.

The lookup only adds the owner. Fall back to the id-only actor when the lookup fails. The record is then noisier but complete. The guard must not fail toward an event nobody sees.

Add a test where mockUser.findById rejects and the lines are still emitted.

Proposed fix
 const agentById = async (agentUserId: unknown): Promise<RecordActor | null> => {
   if (!agentUserId) return null;
-  const user = await lazyUser().findById(String(agentUserId)).select('_id isBot botMetadata.ownerUserId').lean();

agentById awaited the owner lookup unguarded inside the emitRecord
factory, so a rejected Mongo read dropped the whole B1-B5 line set even
though the trail row already names the agent. The lookup now only adds the
owner: on failure the lines go out with the agent's id and a warning.

The plan doc also said revokeGrant returns what it moved; it returns the
count. RoomGrant.revokeCascadeMoved returns the moved grants, and
revokeGrant passes them to the recorder.

Both from CodeRabbit's review of 93a17af.

Both items from CodeRabbit's review of 93a17aff are fixed in the new head's last commit.

  • backend/services/brokerRecordService.ts 34-38: "Do not drop the record lines when the agent lookup fails." Fixed. agentById now catches a rejected owner lookup, warns, and falls back to the id-only agent actor, so the B1–B5 lines still go out and only the owner is lost. New test: findById rejects, all four B5 lines are emitted with { type: 'agent', id } and the warning fires. Removing the guard turns it red.
  • docs/plans/task-513-server-record.md 74-75: "Correct the claim about what revokeGrant returns." Fixed. The sentence now says RoomGrant.revokeCascadeMoved returns the moved grants and revokeGrant passes them to the recorder, returning only their count.

Test a lookup that returns no user.

A rejected lookup and a null result both produce an ID-only actor, but they follow different paths: rejection logs a warning, while null reaches the user || { _id: agentUserId } fallback without logging. The current test covers only rejection. Add a lean() === null case and assert that the emitted lines retain the agent ID.

Add real-Postgres coverage for the owner-lookup fallback.

The existing integration tests persist normal broker outcomes, but none makes the owner lookup reject. Add a case that rejects User.findById(...).select(...).lean(), calls the broker, awaits flushRecordWrites(), and asserts the four persisted lines and the id-only agent actor.

The fallback test now covers both paths to the id-only agent actor, a
rejected lookup (which warns) and a lookup that finds no user (which does
not), and runs the emitted lines through the shared record writer, so an
agent actor with no owner is shown to persist.

On CodeRabbit's review of 56eb2691 (two trivial items in brokerRecordService.test.js):

  • 56: "Test a lookup that returns no user." Fixed in the new head. The fallback test is now one case per path: a rejected lookup (warns) and a lookup that finds no user (no warning). Both assert the four B5 lines and the id-only agent actor.
  • 58: "Add real-Postgres coverage for the owner-lookup fallback." not fixing: the fallback only changes the actor the factory returns, and the Postgres store keeps the writer's line as it is (neither recordChainRepository.ts nor migration 0002 reads the actor). The part that could refuse an id-only actor is the shared writer, so the unit test now runs the emitted lines through the vendored appendEntry, which accepts an agent actor with no owner (format.js:191 checks owner only when present). A real-PG case that mocks User.findById would exercise the mock, not Postgres.

Parked: v3 takes fixes only while v4 is rebuilt (ledger D169). Reopen if a live user needs it.
