What this does

A dsh seat can now run confined. The one accepted shape is:

"sandbox": { "mode": "workspace", "network": { "policy": "restricted" } }

Every other sandbox shape is still refused, and so is public trust. A seat with no sandbox runs exactly as it does today.

A confined spawn:

  • runs dsh and the MCP server under a loopback-only Seatbelt profile. Writes are allowed only in the workspace and the seat home. Reads are limited to the system paths, the dsh package, the warmed MCP build and those two folders. dsh's own sandbox-policy is set to danger-full-access, because a nested sandbox-exec fails; the outer profile is the boundary.
  • opens three loopback ports and no other network. They are the provider proxy, a TCP relay to the instance, and a new CONNECT proxy (cli/src/lib/egress-proxy.js). The CONNECT proxy reaches only GitHub's download hosts on port 443: codeload.github.com, raw.githubusercontent.com and objects.githubusercontent.com. github.com and api.github.com are refused, because they accept writes made with any token a run is handed, and a tunnel cannot tell a read from a write. It refuses IP literals and any name that resolves to a loopback, private, CGNAT, link-local or NAT64 address, and the refused targets are printed after the turn.
  • pins the model. The provider proxy (pinnedModel) refuses a request for any other model with a 403 and never forwards it. It also fails the turn (served model check failed) when the provider's response names a different model than the one requested. The child still gets a per-spawn proxy bearer, never the key, and exact-key echoes stay redacted.
  • fails closed off macOS, without sandbox-exec, or with no warmed Commonly MCP build. It never falls back to an unconfined run.
  • runs in its own process group, so a stalled turn's grandchildren are killed with it under the supervised runner.

seatbelt.js gains network: 'open' | 'loopback'. The default (open) profile is byte-identical to main's. loopback drops only the open-network block: bare outbound, AF_SYSTEM, and the SecurityServer, securityd, DNS, configd, networkd and ocspd lookups. A test asserts that the loopback profile's lines are a subset of the open profile's.

Proof

Container (node:22, fake provider only):

  • the new and changed suites pass 70/70 three times (one darwin-only test skipped);
  • seats 200/200 three times, including a UTF-8 character split across chunks on the pinned path;
  • full cli suite: 1849 passed, 30 skipped, 6 failed. All 6 also fail on main in this container, because it has no repo scripts/, no backend ts-node, and a different PATH;
  • eslint is clean on the sources and the probe.

Mutants (each run in the container; every one fails at least one test):

mutant failed
egress allowlist bypassed 3
private-address check off 1
IP literal allowed 1
dsh asks for network: 'open' 1
Seatbelt ignores loopback 2
pin not passed to the proxy 2
served-model check skipped 2
dsh's own sandbox left at workspace-write 1
own process group dropped 1
extra sandbox keys accepted 1
api.github.com back on the egress list 1
per-chunk toString in the pin check 1

Host Seatbelt probe (node cli/scripts/probe-seatbelt-confinement.mjs). This is our own script and a ten-line C lookup stub; no third-party code ran on the host, and nothing calls /usr/bin/security. All 12 rows pass on the fleet Mac:

  • a write inside the workspace is allowed; a write outside it is denied (EPERM);
  • opening ~/.commonly, ~/.config/gh/hosts.yml and ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain-db is denied (EPERM). All three exist on that host;
  • the admitted loopback port connects; another loopback port and 1.1.1.1:443 are denied;
  • the com.apple.SecurityServer lookup works unconfined (positive control) and is denied confined (kern_return 1100). com.apple.trustd is admitted;
  • negative control: the same probe built with network: 'open' fails the loopback-port, 1.1.1.1 and SecurityServer rows, as it should.

com.apple.securityd answers 1102 (unknown service) even unconfined on this macOS. So the keychain denial that means something is the SecurityServer lookup plus the file denial, not the securityd row. cli/__tests__/seatbelt.loopback.smoke.test.mjs runs the probe on darwin and is skipped elsewhere; no CI job runs macOS today.

Not done here, and known unknowns

  • No real dsh seat was started. The TASK-401 hold stands. After it lifts, the exfil test runs on one throwaway seat, then on writers.
  • Served-model name through LiteLLM is unverified. If the gateway reports the upstream model name instead of the requested alias, every confined turn fails the served-model check. That fails closed, but check it on the throwaway seat first.
  • dsh may reach startup hosts beyond the provider and GitHub. Those requests are refused and printed after the turn, so the first real turn will show them.
  • No GitHub credential inside the run. hosts.yml and the keychain are outside the profile. The run can download public archives and raw files, and cannot clone over git, call the GitHub API, or push.
  • The seat's Commonly credential file is readable inside the profile. The MCP server needs it. Three routes out remain by design: the provider (it receives what the run sends it), the instance relay (it carries whatever the seat's token allows, such as a post to the seat's pods), and the egress proxy (tunnels to the three GitHub download hosts only). Anything the run can read can leave through the first two; a request to a download host can still carry data in its URL.
  • The dsh compatibility matrix lives on feat/moonjelly-compat, not on main, so this PR does not touch it.

…l and a GitHub-only egress

A dsh seat that declares sandbox { mode: workspace, network: { policy:
restricted } } now runs under a loopback-only Seatbelt profile: writes only
in the workspace and the seat home, no outbound network except three
per-spawn loopback ports (the provider proxy, a relay to the instance, and a
CONNECT proxy that reaches only GitHub on 443 and refuses names that resolve
to private addresses). The provider proxy refuses requests for any model but
the seat's and fails the turn when the response names another. The spawn
fails closed off macOS, without sandbox-exec, or without a warmed MCP build,
and runs in its own process group. Every other sandbox shape is still
refused.

Walkthrough

Adds a macOS confined dsh mode for the workspace and restricted-network sandbox shape. It routes provider, MCP, and HTTPS traffic through constrained proxies, pins provider requests and responses to the seat model, and adds Seatbelt probes and end-to-end tests.

Changes: Confined dsh execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Loopback network boundaries
cli/src/lib/sandbox/seatbelt.js, cli/src/lib/egress-proxy.js, cli/src/lib/instance-proxy.js, cli/scripts/probe-seatbelt-confinement.mjs, cli/__tests__/egress-proxy.test.mjs, cli/__tests__/instance-proxy.test.mjs, cli/__tests__/seatbelt*.test.mjs
Seatbelt profiles can limit networking to listed loopback ports. The egress proxy restricts CONNECT targets, and the instance proxy can listen on an ephemeral loopback port. Tests and a macOS probe exercise the network and file-access boundaries.
Provider model pinning
packages/seats/src/wire/provider-proxy.js, packages/seats/test-support/fake-provider.js, packages/seats/test/provider-proxy-pin.test.js
The provider proxy checks requested and served completion models against an optional pin. Tests cover streaming and non-streaming responses, model mismatches, missing model names, credential redaction, and split multibyte characters.
Confined dsh orchestration
cli/src/lib/adapters/dsh.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.dsh.confined.test.mjs, docs/cli/dsh.md
The adapter validates the confined configuration and required setup, starts proxies, launches dsh under Seatbelt, and checks proxy and model results. Tests cover confined and unconfined runs, setup failures, process groups, and cancellation. The guide describes the mode and its limits.

State the actual read scope of the confined profile.

Lines 103-104 say reads are limited to "system paths, the dsh package, the warmed MCP build and those two folders". The code grants more than that:

  • resolveDshEntry returns packages as the outermost node_modules directory. With a global npm install, that is every globally installed package (for example /opt/homebrew/lib/node_modules), not only @deepseek-ai/dsh.
  • mcpConfigDir: tempDir makes the whole per-spawn temp directory readable. That directory holds the Commonly credential file, the patch and provider-proxy-token.

Change the bullet to name the whole node_modules tree and the per-spawn temp directory. The docs/** path instruction asks to "flag a claim that ... behaves differently".

Test a model change after the first streamed chunk.

The current streamed substitute test already reaches outgoing.destroy(), because the proxy sends SSE headers before it checks the first chunk. However, the fake provider uses the same model for every chunk, so no test verifies that valid initial data is released before a later model mismatch cuts the stream.

Add an upstream fixture that sends the pinned model first and a different model later. Assert that the response ends before the substituted chunk, contains no [DONE] marker, and records one modelCheck().failures entry.

…n check decodes split characters

github.com and api.github.com accept writes made with any token a run is
handed, and a CONNECT tunnel cannot tell a read from a write, so the egress
proxy was an outbound route for anything the run could read, the seat's
Commonly credential included. The default allowlist is now
codeload.github.com, raw.githubusercontent.com and
objects.githubusercontent.com. The guide names the two routes that remain
by design: the provider, and the instance relay.

The served-model check decoded each chunk on its own, so a multi-byte
character split across chunks reached the CLI as two U+FFFD. It now uses a
StringDecoder.

Include the egress proxy in the outbound-route count.

Confined runs also have an outbound CONNECT route to the three listed GitHub content hosts. Calling the provider and instance relay the only “routes out” understates where a run can send request data. Name the egress proxy as the third route, while retaining the distinction that the excluded GitHub write hosts are refused. As per path instructions, “Check each factual claim about code, a route or a tool against the repository at this head.”

Test CONNECT acceptance for the default host.

No test sends CONNECT to raw.githubusercontent.com. The current test only checks that the hostname appears in GITHUB_CONTENT_HOSTS; its successful CONNECT case uses the custom allowed.test allowlist.

@coderabbitai Agreed. Fixed in 01a5683. The Limits list in docs/cli/dsh.md now names three routes out:

  • the provider;
  • the instance relay;
  • the egress proxy, which tunnels to the three GitHub download hosts only and refuses github.com, api.github.com and every other host.

It also says a request to a download host can still carry data in its URL. The PR body says the same.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve numeric-pinned MCP commands to their warmed executable.

resolveCommonlyMcp accepts npx -y @commonlyai/mcp@0.3.20, but prepareMcpSpawn leaves numeric-pinned commands unchanged. With publicSeat: true, it returns null for that npx command. The confined callback then throws before dsh starts, even when the pinned build is warmed.

Make the confined path resolve the exact pinned version to its verified warmed executable. Do not fall back to npx, because the confined Seatbelt permits only the prepared local build.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Kill the confined process tree on adapter timeout.

The supervisor sets ownProcessGroup: true, and the confined dsh path passes that value to runDsh. spawnInOwnGroup therefore detaches and marks the Seatbelt/dsh process as a group leader. The timeout handler still calls proc.kill(...), which kills only that leader.

When the leader closes, runDsh settles and the adapter closes the proxies and removes tempDir. Descendant MCP or tool processes can remain alive in the detached group. They retain inherited credentials and can continue holding resources, but their credential files and loopback proxies have already been removed.

Route both timeout signals through killProcessTree, and keep escalation and temporary-directory cleanup ordered so the process tree is terminated before cleanup.

Tier 1 gate for #2773 at head 01a5683 (dsh confined: seatbelt loopback, egress proxy, provider model pin).

Verdict: PASS. The attack clauses hold, and the limits below are documented in the PR and match what the code does.

Checked

  • Egress proxy (cli/src/lib/egress-proxy.js): CONNECT-only, allowlist GITHUB_CONTENT_HOSTS, resolves once, checks every resolved address against a BlockList of non-public ranges, connects to addresses[0].
  • Seatbelt (cli/src/lib/sandbox/seatbelt.js): OPEN_NETWORK is used only when network is open. The loopback mode allows localhost:<port> only for the ports in loopbackNetworkPorts.
  • Confined dsh (dsh.js): childEnvironment passes only SAFE_ENV (PATH, LANG, LC_*, TERM, USER, LOGNAME, NO_COLOR, CI, SSL_CERT_*). The confined spawn uses network: 'loopback' with loopbackNetworkPorts = [proxy, relay, egress]. assertServedModel runs.
  • Provider pin (packages/seats/src/wire/provider-proxy.js): an unpinned requested model returns 403.

Mutation (each applied in /tmp/wt-2773, restored, tree clean)

  • Egress non-public check removed: 1 test fails.
  • github.com added to the allowlist: 1 test fails.
  • Provider pin requested !== pinnedModel check disabled: 1 test fails.
  • Served-model check disabled: 1 test fails.

Tests: dsh confined, dsh, egress-proxy, instance-proxy, seatbelt, seatbelt.loopback smoke, and host-sandbox-preflight pass 75/75. provider-proxy-pin passes 8/8.

Documented limits (carry into the verdict, not blockers)

  • The Commonly credential file is readable inside the profile.
  • The provider relay and the instance relay are exfiltration routes by design.
  • raw.githubusercontent.com is public content hosting, so it is an open read path on the allowlist.
