Lifts pod chat from the d215 artboard's chat frames (1440 and 390) into its own sheets under frontend/src/v2/chat/: chat-message.css, chat-pane.css, chat-composer.css, chat-inspector.css and chat-states.css. V2App imports them after primitives.css. This removes about 3,270 lines from v2.css. Class names stay v2-*, so handlers and tests keep working.

The PR has four ordered commits, one per slice. The v2 suite was green after each.

Slice Commit What
S3a e1498c8 message row
S3b b609111 pane, stream, thread, presence
S3c 2b92b70 composer and inspector
S3d 6353d7c undrawn states, moved with selectors and values unchanged

After those, 47feddd applies the review fixes, and 8a7644e merges main.

Kept in v2.css on purpose

The landing page loads only v2.css, so .v2-msg and every .v2-decision-card rule stay there. A new test pins them to v2.css alone and fails if a chat sheet declares a decision-card selector.

frontend/src/v2/__testkit__/v2Css.ts reads v2.css plus the chat sheets in V2App's import order, so existing pins follow a rule into its new file.

Exceptions to the frame

Where Frame Here Why
Phone thread-foot keys, message actions, header keys 32 / 28px 44px tap areas through an invisible ring; drawn size unchanged touch floor
Follow (thread foot) not drawn keeps its 44px floor, 8px after the reply count live control
Composer placeholder, fold chevrons placeholder token, 2.58:1 (dark 3.17:1) muted token, 4.97:1 (dark 5.77:1) contrast floor
Phone composer bottom margin 0 64px clears the tab bar
Presence chip inside the list between the list and the composer moving it into the list changes scroll anchoring
Send with an empty draft drawn at rest drawn at rest and disabled, keeping its name the frame draws the empty state

Rulings applied unchanged: the fold mask, the mention chip value, no priority badge, and the thread following #3178.

Checked in a real browser at the head

Local build of this branch against staging, signed in as the staging test seat, on the D215 sample pod.

  • 1440 and 390, light and dark: the page never scrolls sideways (scrollWidth equals the viewport). Seven messages render, with no page errors.
  • Send: disabled with an empty draft, and its accessible name stays "Send message". Typing enables it, and clearing the draft disables it again.
  • Landing at /: computed styles of .v2-msg, its content, author, time and avatar, the composer, and .v2-decision-card are identical to commonly.me.
  • Phone thread: the thread opens in place. Reply in thread and Collapse take taps 6px outside their 32px keys, and their rings meet in the 12px gap without overlapping.

Review

One round, by a fresh-context reviewer given only the diff and the frame. It found no blockers. Taken in 47feddd:

  • The phone thread-foot ring reached only 42px, because inset: -6px measures inside the 1px border. It's now -7px, like the header and composer keys.
  • uiCard.css now loads before the chat sheets. That let the thread-reply rule win the gap tie on a UI card posted as a reply, so the card gets a scoped 4px gap rule.
  • The catch-up dismiss hover read the undefined --v2-text. It now reads --v2-text-primary.
  • The test reading readV2Css() could no longer tell whether a landing-shared rule had moved into a chat sheet. The pin above fixes that.

Declined:

  • Header rings overlap by 2px. They don't: each ring reaches 6px past a 1px border into a 12px gap, so neighbours meet.
  • Disabled Send looks enabled. The frame draws Send at rest in the empty state, so that's a design call, not a lift defect.
  • Claim-run times can show English in zh-CN. That comes from the shared formatRelativeTime helper, which predates this PR.

Reverse verification

Each fix was removed, v2-layout-invariants was run, the fix was restored, and the suite was run again:

thread foot ring 44px                    removed -> 1 failed, 298 passed   restored -> 299 passed
UI card reply keeps 4px gap removed -> 1 failed, 298 passed restored -> 299 passed
catch-up dismiss hover token             removed -> 1 failed, 298 passed   restored -> 299 passed
decision card stays in v2.css (moved) removed -> 1 failed, 298 passed restored -> 299 passed

Merging main

v2.css conflicted with #3198, which lifted BYO out of v2.css. I resolved it by taking main's v2.css and re-applying this branch's diff. Two hunks needed hand placement: the message-reactions block, which sat next to the deleted BYO block, and a zh line-height selector list. A line-by-line three-way check shows the result equals base, plus this branch's changes, plus main's changes, with the zh list as the only intended difference.

The full frontend suite passes after the merge: 207 suites, 2,245 tests. eslint reports 0 errors and tsc no frontend errors. e2e/reviewer-journey.spec.ts was already broken on main and is untouched.

What moved: every chat-only message-row rule leaves v2.css for
frontend/src/v2/chat/chat-message.css (169 selectors, about 960 lines):
.v2-msg* row, head, body, fold, Show more, mention, quote, attachments,
reactions, picker, more menu, hover strip, syscard, system action line and
claim run. The selector set comes from the v2css surface map's classifier
re-run at 540337d, widened to chat-scoped overrides on shared subjects
(.v2-thread .v2-msg, .v2-msg.v2-msg--card). Rules the landing DemoWorkspace
or uiCard also use (.v2-msg, .v2-decision-card) stay in v2.css.

V2App.tsx imports the file right after v2.css and primitives.css. A
component-level import would load before v2.css, because V2Layout is
imported above it, and every moved rule would lose the order ties it won
inside v2.css. A pair-wise order check found no flip that two rules apply
to the same element. A new test reader, __testkit__/v2Css.ts, returns
v2.css plus the lifted files in import order. The invariants (22 reads),
type floors and copy budget read through it.

Redrawn to the frame (.msg .mbody .cd .acts .sumrow .sumlist):
- body: line-height 1.55 -> 22px, colour message-text -> ink-2,
  p 0 0 6 -> 0 0 8, lists 4 0 6 / 22 -> 0 0 8 / 18
- inline code: the .cd chip (mono 12.5, tint, r6, pad 2 5, soft inset ring)
- hover strip: top -14 -> 2, pad 1 -> 2, 1px border + r4 -> r9 on the pop
  shadow; keys 24px r3 -> 28px r8 ghosts with 17px glyphs; the reaction and
thread glyphs are now the frame's
- claim run: the 24px chip becomes the 34px bar in the text column (board
  glyph, up to four 20px faces, bold count, range, run time, chevron);
the open list is the 26px .sumlist rows. The button's accessible name is
unchanged (aria-label = the old one-line label). New strings
  podChat.claimRun.count / .range in en and zh-CN.
- 390: 30px faces, 10px gap. Name, meta and body take the frame's 14 /
  11.5 / 14-on-22. The 15px phone type predated the frame (#1556).

Exceptions to the frame:
- the drawn 28px strip keys keep a 44px hit area (::after, 8px each side)
on (hover: none), (pointer: coarse) and at <=760px. The strip gap goes
2 -> 16px there, so neighbouring hit areas meet without overlapping.
- the fold keeps the #3055-held mask-image fade, not the frame's ::after
  gradient to --sf.
- the mention keeps #3173's color-mix(accent 10%) fill, not --c-soft. The
accent-soft ban in chat stays in force.
- the claim chevron is text-muted, not --ph. Measured: --ph on the bar is
  2.46:1 (dark 3.01:1); muted is 4.76:1 (dark 5.48:1); marks need 3:1.

Carried unchanged (not drawn in the frame yet): row hover wash, grouped
rows and gutter time, landed flash, quote, attachments, reactions and
picker, more menu, syscard, the system line outside a run, the claim
toggle's hover and focus-visible, the code-block collapse, zh line-height.

Deleted rather than out-ranked:
- .v2-thread .v2-msg__actions { border-radius: 4px; box-shadow: none }
- the two 44px .v2-root button.v2-msg__action sizes in the coarse and
640px blocks. The .v2-thread 24px rule already out-ranked them at every
  width, so they were dead.

Invariants changed:
- the threading-restyle strip lines now pin r9 / pop shadow / pad 2 and
  the 28px keys
- the 760px 24px-key pin becomes the 28px key + hit area
- the 44px touch test pins the hit areas instead of 44px keys
- artboard-grammar actions now read .v2-thread .v2-msg__strip
- the claim-run test pins the bar (34px, subtle fill, soft ring) and the
  muted chevron
- the zh line-height test reads each selector's own rule, because the lift
  splits the shared :lang(zh) lists
- the capability-block order check searches after the strip rule

New: a V2ClaimRun render test for the bar's faces, count, range, time and
list.

…5 frame (S3b)

What moved: 150 chat-only selectors (pane, stream, thread block, thread
card, replies, presence, pod header, history/jump/edge rows) from v2.css
to chat/chat-pane.css, imported in V2App right after chat-message.css so
they keep winning the order ties they won inside v2.css. The order-flip
check across v2.css + both chat files reports one tie, on disjoint
elements (.v2-thread .v2-avatar vs .v2-pods__row-mark.v2-avatar).

Redrawn to the frame:
- Stream padding 10 28 6; phone 8 12 4 (was 0 28 12 / inline 14).
- Thread block (#3178 / TASK-745): the band behind root + replies and
the rail beside the replies are gone. The root is a plain transcript
row; the replies are the .thr card (bg-subtle, inset border-soft ring,
  r10, padding 10 12 8, grid gap 8). Phone: 40px indent, padding 8 10 8.
The replies carry role="group" with "Thread, N replies" (new
  podChat.thread.groupLabel, en + zh-CN).
- Reply rows: 24px / gap 10, head 18, name 13, body 13.5/20, time 11.5.
- Foot: Reply in thread (secondary sm key, new reply glyph, aria-label
kept), Collapse (ghost sm key, chevron turned up), count pushed right
in mono 11.5 muted. Collapse/expand and jump-to-message unchanged; the
--open class stays as the state hook.
- Presence: the typing row is the .presence chip (24px, bg-subtle, inset
ring, mono 11.5 secondary) with a 7px cobalt dot whose pulse uses
--motion-pulse and stops under reduced motion. Avatars and three dots
removed; aria-live and the label text unchanged.

Ruling 9: the unscoped .v2-thread-replies .v2-msg / :first-child /
--grouped / __head / __author / __time overrides, the 640px inner-24px
and replies padding-left rules, the band rules, the bespoke __aim and
__collapse looks, and the typing-avatars rule are deleted, not
out-ranked. v2-typing-dot keyframes stay (the boot mark uses them).

Exceptions:
- Phone foot keys are drawn 32px; an ::after ring (inset -6px) takes the
hit area to 44px. Follow is not drawn, keeps its look and its 44px
min-height on phone, and sits 8px after the count (was margin auto).
- Presence keeps its slot between the scroller and the composer (moving
it into the scroller would touch history anchoring), so its left edge
  is 28 + 48 = 76px (phone 12 + 40 = 52px).
- Desktop foot keys are the drawn 28px (v2p-b-sm).

Tests changed:
- v2-layout-invariants: typing-avatars size -> presence dot; 640 inner
  24px -> 760 inner 40px; typing-dots motion -> presence pulse uses
--motion-pulse; band/rail -> .thr card values and no border-left; rail
geometry test rewritten to card + reply-row numbers and asserts the
deleted overrides stay gone; phone stream padding 8 12 4; cobalt
allowlist adds .v2-chat__typing-dot (the frame's presence dot); the zh
letter-spacing reset is read from every :lang(zh) reset rule, since a
lifted surface carries its own; the phone hit-area check reads the
header and composer halves of the old shared rule separately.
- v2-copy-budget: the hint display:contents rule is checked per half.
- e2e/reviewer-journey.spec.ts was already broken on main (classes that
no longer exist); not touched here.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015AKgpMD6Qh13f7fj6mbGT3
What moved: 46 composer and mention-picker selectors to
chat/chat-composer.css and 75 inspector and pod-settings selectors to
chat/chat-inspector.css, both imported in V2App after chat-pane.css.
The order-flip check reports only ties on disjoint elements (the
inspector's avatars against .v2-thread .v2-avatar; the inspector is its
own pane, outside .v2-thread).

Redrawn to the frame:
- Composer (F23): the plus is the frame's svg plus glyph (was a '+'
::before); Send is drawn at rest with the frame's up-arrow glyph.
With an empty draft it is disabled and keeps its accessible name and
tooltip (ruling 5); what sending does is unchanged. Empty-disabled
looks as drawn; an in-flight send keeps the old dimmed progress look.
- Inspector (F24-F28): head padding 8 10 (was 8 10 0); rows 2px apart
(was 4); a Needs-you item is a 32px row in ink-2 with an inbox glyph.
No priority badge (ruling 6: V2AttentionItem has no priority); the
  agent name keeps that slot.

Contrast (ruling 7), measured:
- Composer placeholder: --ph is 2.58:1 on the surface (dark 3.17:1),
  under 4.5:1; raised to text-muted, 4.97:1 (dark 5.77:1).
- Group fold chevron: --ph is 2.58:1 (dark 3.17:1), under 3:1 for a
  mark; raised to text-muted, 4.97:1 (dark 5.77:1).

Exceptions:
- Phone composer margin stays 4px 10px 64px (frame 4 10 10): 64px
clears the fixed tab bar (ruling 5).
- Composer row keeps align-items flex-end (frame center) for the
  undrawn multi-line draft.
- The "N need you" link row above the items is not drawn and keeps its
look and position; the frame's "115 more" row below the items is a
copy change and was not made here.
- Segment label stays "Threads" (frame "Thread"): no copy changes in a
  lift.

Tests changed:
- V2Composer, V2ComposerMenu: "no Send until text" becomes "Send is
disabled, keeping its name, until text" (ruling 5).
- v2-layout-invariants: the composer test pins disabled={sending ||
!hasText}, the in-flight-only dim, and the muted placeholder; the
mobile-drawer test reads the inspector's own 1023px block; the
  join-choice test checks .v2-pods__join-policy and .v2-pod-join-settings
separately (the shared rule split across files).

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_015AKgpMD6Qh13f7fj6mbGT3
What moved: the remaining 150 chat-only selectors (empty and starter
states, catch-up, delivery hints, cards and other surfaces the frame
does not draw) from v2.css to chat/chat-states.css, unchanged, imported
in V2App after chat-inspector.css. v2.css is now 10,798 lines (14,068
at the base of this PR). The order-flip check across v2.css and the
five chat files finds no new ties; the three it lists sit on disjoint
elements (.v2-thread .v2-avatar against the sidebar row mark and the
inspector's avatars, which render outside .v2-thread).

Kept in v2.css (ruling 1): every .v2-decision-card rule, although the
classifier marks some sub-parts (__other, __option*) chat-only, because
the card is shared with the landing DemoWorkspace, which loads v2.css
and none of the chat files. No other landing class is in a chat file.

No visual change. No exceptions.

Tests changed:
- v2-type-floors: the burn-down entry ".v2-chat__new-pod-action-text,
.v2-chat__new-pod-status" becomes two entries, because the rule split
across files (the status half is chat-only). Both stay 11px; the
  allowlist did not grow.

…atch-up hover token (S3)

- Phone thread-foot keys reached 42px: the ring's inset measures inside the
1px border, so it is -7px like the header and composer keys.
- uiCard.css now loads before the chat sheets, so the thread reply rule won
the gap tie on a UI card posted as a reply; the card keeps its 4px gap.
- The catch-up dismiss hover read the undefined --v2-text; it reads
  --v2-text-primary.
- A test pins the landing-shared rules (.v2-msg, .v2-decision-card) to
v2.css alone, since the landing loads no chat sheet.

Gate for head 8a7644e (Tier 1, UI).

A fresh-context reviewer read 540337d..6353d7c against the d215 chat frames and found no blockers. It checked:

  • The landing and demo render only .v2-msg and .v2-decision-card*, and those rules stay byte-identical in v2.css.
  • Nothing outside V2App renders a class from a chat sheet.
  • A pairwise cascade check found one reordered tie on the same element: a UI card posted as a thread reply. That is fixed.
  • Enter-to-send still returns early on an empty draft.
  • Every new string is in en and zh-CN.

Its four should-fix findings are fixed in 47feddd and reverse-verified in the PR body. The three declined findings are explained there.

The merge of main (8a7644e) was checked three ways, line by line. The full frontend suite passes at this head: 207 suites, 2,245 tests.

Checked in a browser at this head: 1440 and 390, light and dark. The landing's computed styles match prod, and the phone thread-foot tap areas were measured.

GATE: PASS

Walkthrough

The V2 chat interface now loads dedicated stylesheets for chat surfaces. Composer controls, claim-run summaries, thread replies, typing indicators, inspector elements, and chat-state cards have updated rendering. English and Chinese translations and CSS and component tests were updated.

Changes: V2 chat interface

Layer / File(s) Summary
Load chat styles and style the pane
frontend/src/v2/V2App.tsx, frontend/src/v2/chat/chat-pane.css, frontend/src/v2/__testkit__/v2Css.ts, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/*
V2App loads the dedicated chat stylesheets. The pane stylesheet defines transcript, thread, header, history, and reply layouts. CSS tests use a shared reader for the stylesheet set.
Style messages and update thread controls
frontend/src/v2/chat/chat-message.css, frontend/src/v2/components/V2Thread.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2ThreadMessages.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2MessageActions.tsx, frontend/src/v2/icons/glyphs.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/locales/*, frontend/src/v2/__tests/V2ClaimRun.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts
Message and thread styles cover claim summaries, actions, reactions, attachments, and responsive layouts. Thread components add claim and reply labels and update footer controls. The typing indicator uses one decorative dot.
Update composer controls and styling

The pod chat restyle is mostly sound, but member-detail DM rows lose their border because of a mistyped color token. Some phone tap targets, PR-state text colors and hard-coded hex colors also remain open. Increase the phone attention-item touch target.

Each attention item opens a specific message, but this rule makes its button 32px high. The 2px row gap does not provide a 44px touch target. Add a phone min-height: 44px override without reducing the desktop density. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Based on learnings: “Flag a touch target below 44×44px ... unless the target has sufficient spacing or an equivalent accessible target.”

Use theme-aware tokens for PR-state text.

The fixed colors on the open, merged, and closed PR-state labels do not adapt to the light and dark surfaces. The small green and red labels have insufficient contrast on the light surface, and the purple label has poor contrast on the dark surface. Replace the status hex values, including those at Lines 634 and 640, with theme-specific tokens. Use the existing --v2-success-text and --v2-danger-text tokens where applicable. Use var(--v2-danger) for the composer error color.

Literal hex values do not adapt to dark mode. The .v2-avatar--flat-human rule on Line 756 paints a light tile in dark mode. The same file already uses var(--v2-border-soft), var(--v2-bg-subtle) and var(--v2-text-secondary).

The rules for #e5e7eb and #4b5563 on .v2-thread-card__main, and #7b8494 on .v2-thread-card__time, are mostly shadowed by later token rules. Delete the shadowed declarations rather than tokenizing them.

As per path instructions: "Colors, radii and type come from var(--v2-*) tokens. Flag any hard-coded hex."

Replace hard-coded hex colors with --v2-* tokens.

Line 601 uses #f3f4f6, Line 602 uses #e5e7eb and Line 603 uses #4b5563. Line 1020 uses #d4dbf7. These values are fixed for light mode.

The --mine chip on Line 1020 is a live rule. In dark mode it keeps a light border on a token background. Use var(--v2-accent-soft) or a border token. The .v2-root button.v2-msg__reaction base block on Lines 601-603 is overridden inside .v2-thread. Delete the shadowed declarations or move them to tokens.

Check every token used by the chat sheets.

The current assertion checks only the exact var(--v2-text) form. It does not detect future undefined token names or fallback forms such as var(--v2-text, fallback). Compare all referenced tokens with declarations from the stylesheet sources.

Gate for head c5b310e (Tier 1, UI). This replaces the gate at 8a7644e.

The only change since that gate is a merge of main, which brought in the board lift (#3204).

  • v2.css merged without conflicts. A line-by-line three-way check (merge base, plus this branch's changes, plus main's) matches the result exactly.
  • Board tests in v2-layout-invariants: the conflicts were all board tests. Each takes main's version, which reads V2PodBoard.css. The one mixed test reads the board drawer from boardCss and .v2-modal from the combined v2 CSS. Comparing test titles three ways shows none lost or added.
  • v2-type-floors scans the combined v2 CSS plus the BYO and board sheets.

The full frontend suite passes at this head: 207 suites, 2,270 tests. The chat CSS and TSX haven't changed since the browser check.

GATE: PASS

Replace the undefined --v2-border-subtle token.

--v2-border-subtle is not declared in the light set, either dark set, or anywhere else in this file. The defined tokens are --v2-border, --v2-border-soft and --v2-border-strong. The border shorthand has no fallback, so it becomes invalid at computed-value time and resolves to none. As a result, DM rows in member detail have no border at rest. The hover rule at Line 3236 changes only border-color, so hover shows no border either.

🐛 Proposed fix
-  border: 1px solid var(--v2-border-subtle);
+  border: 1px solid var(--v2-border-soft);
