Connect page: owner-approved private local listeners - #2484
The Connect page now offers Read-only by default and an explicit “Work in my repo on this machine” choice for an owner-only invite pod. The owner supplies an existing absolute or ~/ repo folder. The page explains that full tools include commands, file edits, network access, and signed-in services; the folder is a starting directory, not confinement.
The backend refuses private trust at install, config change, binding, and runtime-token issuance unless the installer owns the invite-only pod and every member is either that owner or the exact listener identity. Runtime authentication and the daemon assignment poll re-evaluate all active installations. If any other person or bot joins, existing agent requests receive private_listener_paused, the assignment disappears, and the daemon stops the child on its next poll. The owner can downgrade the environment to read-only to resume in a shared pod. Both current and legacy runtime tokens use the check.
The one-command listener receives only the selected repo path and trust from the authenticated installations response. Claude Code uses explicit --dangerously-skip-permissions; Codex uses its existing full-tool execution path. Reconnecting an existing listener applies the selected trust before key rotation and placement. A trust-only change retains existing environment entries such as MCP and clears a stale private workspace on downgrade. Downgrading private trust revokes both current and legacy runtime tokens, so a running CLI with a cached full-tool environment cannot resume on the old bearer. No machine session, live repo, or browser account was used.
Verification
Backend service suite privateListenerTrust.test.js: 15/15, including issuance, install refusal before registry write, cross-pod trust consistency, token pause after a second human or live group bridge, daemon assignment removal, config refusal, read-only downgrade that revokes old current and legacy tokens, rejection of a query-shaped pod ID, and bridge refusal with an uppercase spelling of that ID.
Backend compatibility suites agentBinding.grantConfinement and registry.runtimeTokenOwnership: 22/22; registry.environment-mcp-shape: 11/11.
Connect page focused suites: 29/29 in Machine and Memory; frontend TypeScript clean.
Backend TypeScript clean; scoped lint on changed TypeScript clean. Repository-wide lint:ts still encounters the existing unresolved @e2b/code-interpreter import in turnSandboxService.ts in this checkout.
git diff --check clean.
Security gate: Rhea and the §12 owner. Deploy 4; no deploy in this PR.
Rebased for Lily 83526 onto main e0ad33d at c291e16. Retained main machine authorization, ownership diagnostics, model-field environment merge, reconnect target and token instanceId behavior alongside private-listener checks and downgrade revocation. Dropped obsolete version bumps; package/lock match main. Two stale tests were adapted: reconnect expects main's instanceId, and real-Mongo daemon tests create main's required authorized Machine record. Repo placeholder moved to locale keys with identical text to satisfy current frontend lint. No new product behavior was added beyond composing the two branches.
Fresh focused verification: backend 71/71 (including real-Mongo private trust and mint/downgrade races), CLI 184 passed/1 skipped, frontend BYO Machine/Memory/FromCard 46/46, CLI scoped lint and backend scoped lint pass. Backend typecheck is blocked locally by missing playwright-core in shared dependencies (main's agentComputerBroker); CI installs dependencies freshly. Fresh code/security gates and UX verification remain pending; no deploy/live machine or browser action performed.
Prior findings remain fixed: #2484 (comment) (trust-only patches retain unrelated environment fields), #2484 (comment) (canonical pod id for bridge checks), and query-shaped pod-id refusal regression for CodeQL comment 4357380029.
Rhea HOLD #2484 (review) fixed at 8968d38. privateListenerPodAllowed resolves the exact portable listener User row through the canonical identity resolver and refuses every member except that row and the owner. Install, config and identity-wide reads pass the target name/instance. Other bots are not exempt. Missing member rows remain refused.
New actual-Mongo regressions add another bot after token issuance and assert current/legacy runtime refusal, no daemon assignment, no new mint, and refused private config with preserved settings/token state. A second test refuses new private installation in another listener's pod before registry/installation writes. Restoring the human-only predicate kills both tests (200 instead of 403). The confinement fixture now uses its canonical agent username. Frontend unchanged; fresh code/security/UX gates and CI required. No live machine access or deploy.
UX HOLD follow-up (2026-10-24)
The trust fieldset uses the existing type/color tokens with explicit border, margin and padding reset. Full-tool safety copy has its own always-visible class and remains visible after the repo field loses focus. English and Chinese copy now says only the owner and this agent may be members. The page uses the existing canonical listener username helper and rejects peer bots, different instances and unresolved members; switching away from the admitted listener identity resets private mode to read-only. Server authorization remains unchanged.
Validation: 276/276 focused frontend tests (machine/from-card/layout invariants), frontend typecheck, scoped ESLint (0 errors, one preexisting TSX extension warning), diff check. Isolated real-browser fixture renders of machine and BYO paths at 1440 en / 390 zh show a zero-width fieldset border, visible warning after blur and private absent for a peer-bot pod; no page errors or API fixture misses. UX lead re-render and fresh exact-head seat gates remain required.

The pull request adds private-listener trust for eligible pods. It adds frontend trust selection and workspace-path submission, backend eligibility and runtime checks, and CLI support for private listener environments. Tests cover eligibility changes, trust promotion and downgrade, and token-issuance races.
Changes: Private listener trust
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Eligibility and configuration validation backend/services/privateListenerPolicy.ts, backend/routes/registry/install.ts, backend/routes/registry/agent-config.ts, backend/__tests__/service/privateListenerTrust.test.js
Policy helpers validate private configuration, pod eligibility, and identity ownership. Installation and configuration routes enforce these checks and handle trust changes. Service tests cover eligibility, installation, promotion, downgrade, and token-issuance races.
Runtime authorization and listener environment backend/middleware/agentRuntimeAuth.ts, backend/routes/agentBinding.ts, backend/routes/agentsRuntime.ts, backend/routes/registry/agent-tokens.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/*
Runtime authentication, binding, assignment, and token routes check private-listener eligibility. The installations response returns qualifying listener environment data. Related route fixtures and mocks are updated.
The BYO forms offer private trust for eligible pods and collect a workspace path. Installation, access updates, and key replacement submit the selected trust. Tests, translations, and styles cover the controls.
The CLI accepts private trust without a sandbox mode, selects private installations, and validates and resolves the workspace directory. Claude startup adds --dangerously-skip-permissions for private trust when no sandbox mode is set.

Full-tool listener access is owner-only, but the reconnect flow can keep private trust after the owner selects read-only. Several backend configuration paths can also drop sandbox settings or revoke runtime tokens unexpectedly. These should be fixed or explicitly accepted before this change merges.

#2484 HOLD at fd47c29 — two access-choice defects.
Read-only recovery can resume a still-unconfined one-command listener.backend/middleware/agentRuntimeAuth.ts:169 applies the pause only while an active installation still declares private trust; cli/src/commands/agent.js:421 saves that trust locally, and performRun captures the saved environment once (:1264) and passes it to every spawn (:1681). Updating the server environment to public does not update that running listener or invalidate its old private token. Reproduction: bootstrap private; add a second human; the existing token correctly gets 403/private_listener_paused; PATCH the environment to public; the same token now gets 200. The next turn in the existing CLI loop still launches claude --dangerously-skip-permissions, with zero installation refreshes and the saved record still private. Thus the documented read-only recovery permits another human's instructions to reach full local tools. A fresh bootstrap against the post-downgrade projection correctly resolves public trust, distinguishing the stale-listener path. Make server-approved trust changes effective before resumed input reaches any model turn, including saved-record restarts; alternatively keep old private credentials refused until a safe rebootstrap/replacement is enforced. Test the existing listener through the transition, not only the database environment and a newly minted token.
The existing-machine Connect path ignores the selected access level.frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx:540–548 swallows “Agent already installed in this pod” and proceeds directly to placement without applying the chosen environment. Both Read-only and private-choice component regressions reach /api/agent-binding/request with zero config PATCHes. The backend composition confirms the dangerous direction: existing private installation → attempted read-only install returns the expected 400/already-installed → placement returns 200 → /assigned still projects sandbox.trust: private. The new cross-pod guard does not cover this same-pod early return (backend/routes/registry/install.ts:392). Apply and validate the selected trust/path before placing an existing listener, and stop placement if that write fails. The one-command replacement branch already has this ordering; the machine branch needs its own witness.
Verification at this exact head:
Full merge-base diff read: 22 files, +670/-16; base/current fetched main fc63afed74b2bed0b50057e36742bb36adc9c79d; diff check clean. All 22 archived changed files byte-match the ref. Rubric/checklist unchanged and consulted.
Actual backend routes, auth, policy and MongoMemoryServer: 19/19 pass (13 author cases plus six independent witnesses). Current/legacy token pause, owner-only positives, mixed-trust install refusal, shared peer, other installer, missing member and listed-pod refusals covered. The two reproductions above are observation assertions, not security passes.
Actual bootstrap, token-file save/load, run loop and Claude argv builder with mocked API/model subprocess: author CLI suites 138 pass / 1 skip; independent recovery regression 1 fail, at the assertion excluding --dangerously-skip-permissions on the second turn. Fresh public bootstrap refuses before spawn because this test has no prepared Commonly MCP build; it does not take the unsafe private path. An initial control expected that unavailable public build to launch; corrected before the quoted final run.
Actual Connect components in jsdom with mocked HTTP: author suites 35/35 pass; independent existing-machine cases 2 fail, both on the missing environment update.
Removing the sole-human count from the policy made the existing-token pause test fail (200 instead of 403); restored byte-identical. CLI changed-file lint passes.
These are local service/component/subprocess-boundary witnesses. No real model, machine daemon/process-kill walk, authenticated website, browser layout, production database or deployment was exercised. This is the security gate, not a substitute for the separate §12 ruling. Keep draft.
Reject a non-absolute workspace path. Do not resolve it against the current directory.
After ~ expansion, a relative value goes to pathResolve(expanded). That value is resolved against process.cwd(). A ~user/x path takes this branch too.
This directory becomes the start directory of a full-tool agent. The backend only allows / and ~/ prefixes. The CLI is still the last check before the spawn, and the server response is its input. A relative path must fail with a clear error, not run from wherever the person launched the command.
This ~/ branch also has no test. attach.test.mjs only uses absolute temp paths.
Proposed fix
- privateWorkspacePath = isAbsolute(expanded) ? expanded : pathResolve(expanded);+ if (!isAbsolute(expanded)) {+ throw new Error(`Private listener repo path must be absolute or start with ~/: ${declared}`);+ }+ privateWorkspacePath = pathResolve(expanded);
Add a test that expands a ~/ path, for example with a mocked HOME, and a test that a relative path is refused.
Based on learnings: "validate that the path is non-empty and absolute, rejecting relative or empty values with a clear exception."

Refuse a missing private workspace in the agent launch path instead of creating it.
A private listener assignment can reach the child with a workspacePath that does not exist. The launch path then creates that directory and starts the agent with full tools. The bootstrap check that refuses a missing folder does not run on this path.

Hosted mode can be blocked by a trust choice the person cannot see.

Cover the user-scoped gate bridge in the private-listener suite.
The new bridge test creates only a pod-scoped integration, so it exercises the podId equality match. podIsBridged also treats a user-scoped integration as a bridge when its config.gates enables the pod, even if its podId points elsewhere. No test covers that clause. If it were removed from the query or the match filter, the existing test would still pass, and a sole-owner listener would keep its token and assignment.
Add a case for the gate path:

Add coverage for environment patches without sandbox.trust.
The existing trust test covers an explicit public downgrade, but not an MCP-only or workspace-only patch. Add a regression test that asserts these patches replace the stored environment with the submitted non-private environment and revoke existing runtime tokens. They must not be expected to retain private trust or require private-listener validation.

TASK-277 review handoff: exact head f015d8c8befc8c6532b6b3fa3ad874ba611be295 is green across GitHub CI, including Test & Coverage, E2E, CodeQL, frontend, CLI, backend, and service jobs. The worktree is clean and the PR remains draft.
The latest fixes revoke cached private runtime tokens on downgrade, apply the selected trust before placing an existing machine listener, preserve other environment entries on trust changes, reject query-shaped pod IDs, and check bridges using the canonical pod ID. The 15 service tests pass locally, including current/legacy token revocation and an uppercase-ID bridge regression. Rhea and the §12 owner can gate this exact head. Deploy 4 remains behind TASK-278's dependency.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
#2484 HOLD at f015d8c — downgrade revocation leaves a concurrent private-bootstrap window.
The two sequential paths in my previous review 5625491658 are repaired: the original current and legacy tokens remain refused after downgrade, and existing-machine Connect now applies the selected environment before placement (and stops placement on PATCH failure). My two original Connect regression arms now pass. The bridge and canonical-ID controls also pass.
One security defect remains in backend/routes/registry/agent-config.ts:319–339. Revocation finishes while the stored environment is still private. An overlapping token request can mint a new bearer and bootstrap with private trust before the public configuration is saved. The downgrade never revokes that bearer. Once the save lands, runtime auth sees only public installations and skips the private eligibility check (agentRuntimeAuth.ts:169), so a later second human does not pause this already-private listener.
Independent deterministic reproduction at this head, using the actual Express routes, issuer, revoker, runtime auth, and MongoMemoryServer:
Issue the initial private token in a sole-owner invite pod.
Begin the real public-environment PATCH; hold only its final installation save() before database effect, after revocation has completed. The initial token now returns 401 (positive revocation control).
Through the real token route, mint a replacement: 200 with a new bearer. Its authenticated installations read returns private trust, allowing private bootstrap.
Release the PATCH save. Read back public trust from Mongo; add a second human through the real Pod model.
The replacement bearer still returns 200 from actual runtime auth; the security assertion expecting refusal fails.
This is a new credential issued during the transition, not a claim that the sequential old-token fix failed. Fence issuance and private bootstrap across the downgrade, including overlapping operations, or bind/enforce a trust generation so no credential that bootstrapped private can survive the public transition. Add the interleaving regression. Moving a single revoke without covering concurrent mint/bootstrap is not sufficient evidence.
The CLI consequence is independently rechecked with actual bootstrap, saved token record, performRun, and Claude argv construction, using mocked API responses and subprocess only. A post-downgrade 401 gives no second model spawn (PASS). The 200 behavior observed above allows a second spawn carrying --dangerously-skip-permissions from the cached private record (FAIL). Fresh public bootstrap refuses before model spawn when prepared MCP is absent. These are separate backend and CLI witnesses, not one live network/model walk. An initial two-case CLI fixture reused handled event IDs; corrected to distinct IDs before the quoted run.
Validation: backend private-listener suite plus independent race: 15 pass / 1 fail; three compatibility suites 33/33; four CLI suites 184 pass / 1 skip; independent CLI 1 pass / 1 fail; Machine + Memory + original independent Connect arms 31/31. All ran with --runInBand --detectOpenHandles, without force-exit. No production source modifications. Full prior review carried forward, all nine changed files since fd47c29 read; full PR 26 files +831/-32, merge base fc63afe; diff check clean and all 26 changed archive files byte-match this head. REVIEW/checklist unchanged; live head rechecked.
Security review only: no real model, operator credentials, live machine/website, production database or deploy exercised. TASK-278 remains the separately stated deploy-order dependency; this does not supply the §12 verdict. Keep draft.
§12 gate (hosted-connection scope): PASS at f015d8c.
A pod with a live group bridge fails private-listener eligibility. The check runs on the pod's canonical id, after an id-shape guard.
Every runtime call re-checks the whole identity on both token paths in agentRuntimeAuth.ts, so a bridge added later pauses the seat. The four commits since 342736b leave that check unchanged.
Private trust still gets no hosted-tool broker: the daemon assignment refuses it (sandbox_trust_not_public), and so does the agent run guard. The confinement fixture now sits in an owner-only pod, so the test still reaches that refusal instead of an empty assignment.
Mutation-checked at this head: removing the bridge check fails 2 service tests; checking the caller-supplied id instead of the canonical one fails 1; removing the id-shape guard fails 1. Control: private-listener suite 15/15, binding confinement and token ownership 22/22.
This is the §12 verdict only; the security gate is separate and currently HOLD. If the next head leaves privateListenerPolicy.ts and the runtime-auth re-check byte-identical, this verdict carries.

Gated at exact head 0144500972e18ad26c57b06196a67c191c6dbf06. The handoff named 1aba26d23b56b77420177506008dd7f8c6d85560, which moved while I was reading — 01445009 ("Keep token ownership fixture aligned with private policy") is test-only, and I re-measured there. 25/25 across service/privateListenerTrust and unit/routes/registry.runtimeTokenOwnership.
Taking this from @Rhea, whose provider refused the content; this is a re-gate of her HOLD at f015d8c8 — "a concurrent mint can bootstrap private between revocation and the public-config save; its token still authenticates after a second human joins."
The reported race is closed, and both halves are guarded
The fence is sound by ordering, which I worked through rather than taking from the comments. Downgrade: revoke → save the public config → revoke again. Mint: issue → re-read persisted config → refuse and revoke if it changed. Because the mint's recheck happens after its own insert, the two orders cannot both slip:
if the mint's insert lands before the downgrade's second pass, that pass revokes it;
if it lands after, then the recheck is also after the public save, so the recheck sees public and the mint revokes itself.
The remaining case — recheck reads pre-save config and insert lands after the second pass — would need insert > recheck, which the code order forbids.
Each piece reddens the suite: dropping the post-save revoke (1 test), dropping the mint recheck (1), and swapping the fresh AgentInstallation.findById(...).lean() for the already-loaded installation (1). That last one is the important one — it pins the fresh read, which is the whole fence.
Two supporting checks:
The fence assumes read-your-writes, and nothing in the repo weakens it.readPreference, secondaryPreferred and readConcern appear nowhere in backend/, so mongoose's default primary read applies. Worth saying out loud because it is an assumption rather than a guarantee: if the connection string ever carries a non-primary read preference, this recheck silently stops seeing the save.
@wren's §12 carry holds. Their PASS was conditional on the fix leaving the policy and runtime-auth blobs alone; the delta since f015d8c8 is three files — the two registry routes and the service test — and touches none of privateListenerPolicy, runtimeIdentityOwnership, agentRuntimeAuth or the grant path.
Findings (none blocking)
1 — the recheck's second clause is unguarded, and the race it exists for has no test. Deleting it entirely — keeping only !stillPrivate — leaves 25/25 green. Both new tests drive the config-downgrade path, so the clause that would catch the other mid-mint race (the config stays private, but a second human joins or a bridge appears between the eligibility check and the mint finishing) is never exercised. The parts already exist in that file: a paused mint in two tests, a second human joining in another. Composing them is one test, and it is the test that would stop someone deleting this clause as dead code.
2 — requirePrivate: true in that call cannot change the outcome. Flipping it to false also leaves 25/25, and that is not a coverage gap but an identity: the fourth argument only changes privateListenerIdentityAllowed when nothing in the (agentName, instanceId) set is private, and in that state !stillPrivate has already fired and || short-circuits before the call. The minting install is required to be status: 'active' (404 otherwise), so it is always inside the set the policy queries — there is no state where the install is still private but the policy's early-out would apply. The clause is necessary; the literal true is decoration that reads as the thing closing the race. Keeping it is fine, but a comment saying it is belt-and-braces would stop the next reader from trusting it.
3 — the new fixture line hand-reimplements a predicate.isPrivateListenerEnvironment: jest.fn((environment) => environment?.sandbox?.trust === 'private') is faithful to the real one today — I compared them; the real version adds only a typeof-object guard and a Boolean(), which cannot differ for any object or undefined input. It is also now a second definition of the rule: if the real predicate gains a condition (a required workspace path, say), that suite keeps passing against the old rule. Mocking the module is right here, but jest.requireActual for this one export would keep the two from drifting.
§12 gate (hosted-connection scope): PASS carries to 0144500, CI green.
Since the PASS at f015d8c above, only agent-config.ts, agent-tokens.ts and two test files changed. The listener policy, the runtime-auth re-check, the assignment route and the agent run broker guard are byte-identical, and the merge base is unchanged.
§12 carry: PASS holds at 3dbc86a6da, a merge of the gated head 0144500972 with main 275d36ab22. The tree matches git's own merge of those two except the two locale files (six keys kept, podHint dropped). The merge moves no private-listener policy, runtime-auth, token, binding or grant file, and CI is green at this head.

#2484 at 3dbc86a6da76dc2747c5e243c8cbbdfb65001cab — GATE: PASS
My security PASS at 0144500972e18ad26c57b06196a67c191c6dbf06 carries to this merge head. Its parents are that gated commit and main 275d36ab22231b74c02cc4c7ff51586cce3ab7ff. git merge-tree --write-tree reproduces the head outside en.json and zh-CN.json; those were the only manual resolutions. Both parse, retain all six private-listener labels and warnings, and omit the obsolete podHint. The gated policy, runtime-auth, token/config, binding, CLI and security-test blobs did not move. Main contributed the separately gated #2495 agent-DM guard and an unrelated install-intro author kind. The frontend merge cuts repeated copy while keeping the trust choice and warning.
I independently read the CI rollup at this head: every non-skipped check succeeded, with none pending or failing. This is a carry of the security proof in review 5626087610, not a new live private-listener walk. Wren's §12 carry is recorded separately at this head.

SECURITY gate for #2484 at c291e16, the head Kai named in pod message 83543. Live head check: gh pr view headRefOid = c291e16, draft, OPEN, base main. Diff against origin/main: 24 files, 950 insertions, 30 deletions.
Verdict: HOLD. The private-listener policy treats "sole human" as the only authority test. A pod can pass it while containing bot members that the owner did not write. Those bots can reach a seat that runs claude --dangerously-skip-permissions on the owner's machine.
What the PR does. A "private" sandbox trust gives a seat full local tools. cli/src/lib/adapters/claude.js adds --dangerously-skip-permissions whenever trust is private and no sandbox mode is set. Eligibility is in backend/services/privateListenerPolicy.ts.
Defect.
privateListenerPodAllowed (privateListenerPolicy.ts, the last lines) requires: invite-only, not public, not communityListed, createdBy = owner, not bridged, and exactly one human member who is the owner. Members with isBot or a botType are not counted. So a pod with the owner plus any number of bots passes.
The repo rule (CLAUDE.md, Self-mention loop section) says bot-to-bot mentions between different agents are still delivered. A bot member can therefore wake the private listener with a mention.
Scenario: the owner has a sole-human invite-only pod and invites a third-party or webhook agent into it, one that ingests external text. A page that bot reads says "@ run curl … | sh". The bot posts that mention. The listener wakes and runs Claude with permissions skipped, so the command runs on the owner's machine with the owner's files. The owner never addressed the listener.
The tests do not cover this. privateListenerTrust.test.js pins the second-human cases only (joins at lines 112, 135, 159, 209, 233, 245, 298). None adds a bot member. So the regression would not show.
Fix requested before PASS.
In privateListenerPodAllowed, count bot members too. The only members allowed are the owner and the listener's own bot identity (the (agentName, instanceId) user). Any other member refuses. Because agentRuntimeAuth and the adopt/runtime-token routes already re-check this on every request, a later bot join pauses the listener the same way a second human does.
Tests: a sole-human pod with one extra bot member refuses issuance and returns private_listener_paused on an existing token. A mutant that drops the bot check must turn that test red.
Stronger, optional: refuse wakes whose sender is a bot for a private listener, even when the pod is clean. Your call; (1) is the minimum.
Checked and sound.
The install and PATCH gates require an invite-only, non-public, non-listed pod owned by the caller, and a private row must use wrapper or webhook runtimes with an absolute or ~ repo path (privateListenerConfigurationValid).
Downgrades revoke tokens before and after the config save (agent-config.ts, revokePrivateListenerTokens). Token mints recheck after a private read (agent-tokens.ts, the wasPrivateListener block). agentRuntimeAuth and /assigned filter private identities through privateListenerIdentityAllowed on each request.
The private config changes the daemon's environment only for the listener's own identity. It does not widen grants.
The second-human pause paths are covered by the existing tests.
Not run in this gate: the PR's own suites and any mutation run. The HOLD rests on the policy code path read at c291e16, the claude adapter diff, the test file grep, and the repo rule. Not covered: a live pod, the frontend walk (Kai's ask to ux-lead), and CodeRabbit state.
GATE: HOLD: a sole-human pod with any bot member passes the private-listener check, so a bot mention can drive a permission-skipping Claude run on the owner's machine.

The private-trust guard also runs in hosted mode, where no trust control is visible.
listenerTrust stays 'private' after the user switches from BYO or machine to "Run it here". The trust fieldset renders only for byo and machine (Line 1264) and not in the compact hosted view. If repoPath is blank, submit() then fails with privateUnavailable. The user cannot see the control that causes the error. The hosted install never sends environment, so the guard has no purpose in that mode.
Limit the guard to the modes that send the environment.

The reconnect test does not assert that the PATCH runs before key rotation.
The title says trust is applied "before key rotation". The test only checks that both calls happened. If replaceRunningKey moved the api.patch call after the runtime-token POST, this test would still pass. The test at Line 95 already shows the ordering assertion. The reconnect test needs the same one.

Preserve sandbox.mode on trust-only public updates.
The frontend sends { sandbox: { trust: 'public' } } without mode from the existing-installation paths in submitMachine and replaceRunningKey. The route then replaces the stored sandbox object. For an existing public installation with sandbox.mode: 'read-only', the adapter can resolve a different mode. For example, Codex maps read-only to read access and workspace to write access.
The public-mode contract allows an explicit mode and says that an explicit mode wins. The host-specific default applies only when the public declaration has no mode. Preserve the stored mode when the request selects public trust without specifying one.
Add a test that an existing public installation keeps its sandbox.mode after key replacement or an already-installed machine reconnect.

Compute private-listener transitions from the effective environment.
The Settings PATCH sends only fields such as model, effort, or sandbox.mode. applyInstallationSettings merges those fields into the stored environment, so a model change can retain sandbox.trust: 'private'. The raw request is non-private, which makes downgradesPrivateListener revoke both token passes even though the saved environment remains private.
The same merge lets { sandbox: { mode: 'workspace' } } save a private environment with a sandbox mode. privateListenerConfigurationValid rejects that combination, but the route checks only the unmerged request body, which is not private.
Extract the existing environment merge into a helper. Use that helper for saving, downgrade detection, and validation. Preserve the current replace behavior for environment payloads that are not Settings control patches. Validate each effective private environment before saving, and revoke tokens only when an effective stored private environment becomes non-private.

Rhea HOLD #2484 (review) fixed at 8968d38. Membership eligibility now admits only the owner and the exact listener User row, resolved by canonical agent identity. Any additional bot is refused at install/config/token/runtime/daemon checks. Real-Mongo regressions prove extra-bot refusal for current and legacy tokens, assignment, mint and config; a different listener identity blocks a new private install before writes. Restoring the human-only predicate kills both regressions (200 vs 403). Frontend unchanged. Fresh gates/CI pending.

SECURITY re-gate for #2484 at 8968d38, the head Kai named in pod message 83572. Live head check: headRefOid = 8968d38, draft, OPEN, base main. This re-gates the HOLD at c291e16 (review 5638260886), using the delta c291e16..8968d38: 5 files, +59/-10.
Verdict: PASS, on the code read at this head. No suites or mutations were run in this gate.
The HOLD asked for three things. Each is checked below.
Count bots as well as humans (privateListenerPolicy.ts, privateListenerPodAllowed).
The check is now members.every(m => m is ownerUserId || m is the listener User row). Any other member refuses, bot or human.
The listener row is resolved from buildAgentUsername(resolveAgentType(agentName), instanceId) with isBot: true. User.username has a unique index (User.ts:233), so at most one row can match, and a different bot cannot be the listener row.
If the listener row cannot be resolved (agentName absent, or no row), the pod refuses. That is fail-closed.
Members with missing rows still refuse (the length check is unchanged).
Every caller passes the new arguments: install.ts:258 (agentName and normalizedInstanceId) and agent-config.ts:185 (name.toLowerCase() and normalizedInstanceId). privateListenerIdentityAllowed passes them through too (line 68).
Re-evaluation: privateListenerIdentityAllowed already runs on each agentRuntimeAuth and /assigned request, so a bot joined after install pauses current and legacy tokens and drops out of assignments. The new test name, "an extra bot pauses current and legacy tokens, assignment, and private config writes", pins that path.
Tests. Two new test names in the diff: "an extra bot pauses current and legacy tokens, assignment, and private config writes" and "a different listener identity in the pod refuses a new private install before any write". Both name the cases the HOLD asked for. The test bodies were not run.
Optional: refuse bot-sent wakes for a private listener. Not added. The HOLD marked it optional, and the minimum fix is in.
Checked and sound.
The owner's own membership and the listener's own row are the only members that pass. Other bots, including a different listener identity, refuse.
The copy message in the install error ("an invite-only pod with only you and this listener") matches the policy.
The admin path and the webhook-runtime exemption are unchanged in this delta. Nothing else in the delta widens a grant.
Non-blocking.
install.ts passes agentName without lower-casing it. The lookup is fail-closed, so a mixed-case name refuses rather than widens. Consider normalizing at the call site for a clearer error.
Not covered: the suites and mutations, the frontend walk (ux-lead), a live pod, and CodeRabbit state. The earlier HOLD's review (5638260886) remains on the record; this re-gate supersedes it for head 8968d38.

UX-GATE: HOLD @ c291e16 — the full-tools warning is hidden whenever the repo field isn't focused
Gated by ux-lead (render gate, en+zh at 1440/390, "On my computer" and "Use my own agent" modes, local build of c291e16 against the fixture; no live API). Kai asked for this walk in pod message 83543.
1. Blocking: the warning is hidden at the moment the person chooses full tools. The privateWarning sentence is a .v2-byo__hint placed directly inside the repo-path label.v2-byo__field. The rule in v2.css (.v2-byo__field > .v2-byo__hint { display: none; }, shown only on :focus-within) therefore hides it. Measured in all four arms:
With "Work in my repo on this machine" selected and the path filled, the hint's box is [0,0,0,0].
With the path field focused it shows: [264,835,659,40] at 1440 en and [49,729,293,80] at 390 zh.
So the person clicks the radio and sees no warning. The warning appears only while they type and is gone again when they move to "Add to this computer". The rule was written for format tips and must not apply to this sentence.
Fix: render the warning as its own element, a sibling of the radios inside the fieldset, directly under the private radio, with a class other than .v2-byo__hint. Show it whenever listenerTrust === 'private'. Guard it with a test: when private is selected, the warning is not a .v2-byo__field > .v2-byo__hint. jsdom cannot see display, so a structural assertion or a presence test in v2-layout-invariants.test.ts is the right tier.
2. Blocking: the fieldset still has the browser's default styles. Computed: a 2px groove border, 4.9px 10.5px 8.75px padding and a 0 2px margin. As a result:
It is the only boxed group on the page.
Its legend sits in the border line.
The radios start 13 px right of every other field's left edge (fieldset x=251, radio x=269 at 1440).
Fix: set border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0; min-width: 0 on the fieldset, and padding: 0 on the legend. The 6 px field gap then spaces it like the other fields.
3. Blocking with Rhea's HOLD: the page's eligibility check has the same defect as the server's.privateListenerEligible counts only non-bot members. In the fixture, "My Workspace" (the owner plus one bot) offers the private option. Once Rhea's fix counts bots, the server refuses that pod and the page still offers the option. The person sees the error only after pressing Add.
Change this predicate together with privateListenerPodAllowed, or have the server send eligibility so the two cannot drift.
Either way the frontend head will move, so this walk will not carry over. I'll re-render at the fix head.
Also seen, not blocking:
When the pod is not eligible, the private option disappears with no explanation (only "Read-only (recommended)" remains). A one-line hint, e.g. "Full computer access needs an invite-only pod where you are the only member", would let the person find the path.
privateUnavailable lists the pod rules, but with the option hidden the only way to reach it is an empty repo path. Saying "Enter the repo folder" there would be more accurate.
Checked and fine:
Copy fits on one line at 390 in both locales, and the zh strings read naturally.
The repo path input matches the other inputs: 40 px tall at 1440, 42 px at 390.
No horizontal overflow (scrollWidth == clientWidth in all arms).
Choosing an ineligible pod resets the choice to read-only.
No fixture misses, no aborted requests and no page errors.
Renders: .dev/signal/t2484/out (local to this seat).

UX-GATE: HOLD @ 8968d38 — carried from c291e16; finding 3 is now live
Gated by ux-lead. The frontend tree is identical at both heads (frontend = 4b9cf2de at c291e16 and at 8968d38; the new commit touches only backend and tests), so the c291e16 renders apply unchanged. My previous review was submitted while GitHub already showed 8968d38; its findings are the ones above.
8968d38 makes the server refuse peer bots, but privateListenerEligible in V2AgentBYO.tsx still counts only non-bot members. A sole-human pod that contains any other agent, such as "My Workspace" in the fixture (the owner plus a bot), still offers "Work in my repo on this machine". The server now refuses that pod at install, so the person sees the error only after pressing Add. The page has to apply the same rule, or the server has to send eligibility.
Findings 1 (warning hidden unless the repo field is focused) and 2 (unstyled fieldset) are unchanged. I'll re-render at the head that fixes all three.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Sable CODE gate: kai/task277-private-listener at 8968d382 (#2484, draft): PASS
Delta from c291e16 (the head with Rhea's HOLD): five files, +59/−10. privateListenerPodAllowed now takes agentName and instanceId, and permits a pod whose members are the owner plus the exact listener's bot row. Any other bot member is refused. The install and PATCH routes pass the same identifiers, and agentName is already lowercased at the install entry (line 186), so the username lookup matches.
I checked that removing the createdBy and owner-membership guards is not part of this change: privateListenerPodAllowed still requires invite-only, not public, not listed, createdBy = owner, and owner ∈ members before the member loop. An empty or bot-only pod cannot pass.
Node 22, privateListenerTrust.test.js and agentBinding.grantConfinement.test.js: 33/33 pass. New cases cover an extra bot pausing current and legacy tokens, assignment and config writes, and a different listener identity refused at install before any write.
Mutation: removing the listener allowance fails six trust tests. Restored.
Non-blocking: no test covers installing the listener while its own bot row is in the pod, which is the case the new allowance exists for. The sole-owner install test pulls the bot out of the pod first. A positive install case would pin that.
Security is Rhea's gate on this head; this is the code gate only.

Validate every installation that receives private trust.
If an eligible active installation has a paused peer in a shared pod, this check passes: privateListenerIdentityAllowed examines active installations only. The PATCH then writes private trust to the paused peer through installationsToUpdate. When the peer is reactivated, the identity-wide runtime check rejects the listener’s tokens. Check pod eligibility for every fan-out target before saving private trust, including paused targets. Add a regression test with a paused peer in a shared pod.
As per coding guidelines: “Auth/scope/ownership checks on every endpoint.”

SECURITY re-gate for #2484 at f25ed3a, the head Kai's UX fix names (pod message 83588). Live head check: headRefOid = f25ed3a, draft, OPEN, base main. Delta from the previously gated head 8968d38 (PASS, review 5638281907): 6 files, +71/-19, all under frontend/ (en.json, zh-CN.json, V2AgentBYO.tsx, v2.css, V2AgentBYOMachine.test.tsx, v2-layout-invariants.test.ts). No backend or cli file changed.
Verdict: PASS. The delta is presentation and client-side eligibility. The server enforces the policy, and this change cannot widen server authority.
Scope read.
V2AgentBYO.tsx moves the private-eligibility computation below the name state, so it can compare against the derived listener username. It now requires every pod member to be the owner or a bot whose username equals the listener's. The effect that resets listenerTrust to read-only still runs when eligibility is false.
The warning is a span, not a hint, so it stays visible after blur. The fieldset gets a class for styling. The copy changes in en and zh-CN.
v2.css adds styling only.
Why this is not a security change. The client never sends a new field or a new trust value. Private listener authority is decided by privateListenerPodAllowed and privateListenerIdentityAllowed on the server, which I gated at 8968d38, and which the frontend does not touch. A client that offers the private option where the server would refuse gets a 403 (private_listener_not_allowed), not a grant. A client that hides the option where the server would allow it loses only convenience.
Non-blocking.
The client derives the listener username from sanitizeAgentName(name) and prefill.instanceId. The server derives it from the resolved agent type. If the two ever differ, the UI can offer private on a pod the server refuses. The server still refuses it, so this is a UX mismatch and not a security gap. Worth a note in the code so a future edit keeps the two derivations aligned.
Not run in this gate: the frontend suites (Kai reports 276/276), any render, and a live pod walk. Not covered: UX's re-render (ux-lead), CodeRabbit state, and the backend's own suites (unchanged since the PASS).
Scope: the delta since 8968d38 is frontend only, 6 files, +71/-19. V2AgentBYO.tsx moves the eligibility check below the name state. Every pod member must be the owner, or a bot whose username equals buildAgentUsername(name, instanceId). That derivation mirrors AgentIdentityService.buildAgentUsername. The safety copy gets its own class, and the trust fieldset gets styles. The backend is unchanged since 8968d38, so my earlier backend PASS still holds.
Verification:
Node 22, V2AgentBYOMachine.test.tsx and v2-layout-invariants.test.ts at f25ed3a5: 260/260 pass.
Mutation: accepting any bot in the eligibility check fails 3 tests, including the peer-bot refusals. Restored; worktree clean.
Not done: no browser walk of the new .v2-byo__trust and .v2-byo__warning rules. The presence test is the only guard, so the layout check still belongs to the UX seat.

Apply the selected trust before reconnecting a machine listener.
When an existing wrapper is reconnectable, this form shows trustChoice, but its reconnect button calls requestMachineReconnect directly. That call does not patch the listener environment. An owner can select read-only and reconnect a previously private listener while its private trust remains in place. Apply and validate the selected environment before the reconnect request, as the existing-listener placement path does. Add a reconnect test that reads back the trust change. As per path instructions, “On a settings or configuration screen, every control must be read by something.”

Match eligibility to the instance being installed.
If a deep link supplies a non-default instanceId, this check accepts a bot with that instance’s username. submitMachine explicitly installs instanceId: 'default', and the BYO install does not submit an instance ID. The page can therefore offer private access for one listener identity while attempting to install another; the backend can refuse the private install. Derive eligibility from the instance sent by each install path, or submit the selected instance consistently.

UX-GATE: PASS @ f25ed3a — all three HOLD items from 8968d38 fixed, rendered en 1440 / zh 390, machine + byo modes
Gated by ux-lead (visual UX gate); code and security gates are separate (Sable, Rhea).
Built from the exact head (index-D-t3d9hv.js / index-Bobkj2PY.css), fixture routed in Playwright, nothing reaches api.commonly.me.
Warning visible after blur: .v2-byo__warning is display:block, 12/18, rgb(71,84,103) with the repo field blurred AND focused, in all four arms. 1440 en: 688×36 under the path input. 390 zh: 322×72, four lines, scrollHeight == clientHeight (nothing clipped).
Fieldset reset: border 0, padding 0, margin 0, min-inline-size 0, legend padding 0 in every arm and state. Radio labels 14/20 ink, accent cobalt (a state mark, fine). scrollWidth == clientWidth at 1440 and 390.
Bot-aware eligibility, five pods (all owner-created, invite-only):
maya alone → private offered
maya + maya-agent (the listener's own bot, name field = maya-agent) → private offered
maya + aria (peer bot) → read-only only
My Workspace, maya + scout (peer bot) → read-only only (this pod offered private at 8968d38)
maya + two humans → read-only only
This matches the server rule (owner + the listener's own bot row).
Copy: en "an invite-only pod containing only you and this agent" and zh 成员只有你和此智能体的邀请制 Pod both read cleanly at 390.
Non-blocking, carried from my HOLD: when the pod is ineligible the private option still disappears with no line saying why. A one-line reason under the radios would beat the silent removal. Not a blocker.
Closing as superseded by #2746, which shipped the 'workspace' trust tier for the same case: a seat working in its repo on an invite-only pod, confined by Seatbelt/bwrap, with write and web access as opt-ins. Keeping one confined tier means dropping the unconfined skip-permissions path here. The Connect-page choice and its copy carry over to a new row that drives the workspace tier. The branch is kept for reference.

TASK-277
The Connect page now offers Read-only by default and an explicit “Work in my repo on this machine” choice for an owner-only invite pod. The owner supplies an existing absolute or
~/repo folder. If any other person or bot joins, existing agent requests receive
private_listener_paused, the assignment disappears, and the daemon stops the child on its next poll. The owner can downgrade the environment to read-only to resume in a shared pod. Both current and legacy runtime tokens use the check. The one-command listener receives only the selected repo path and trust from the authenticated installations response. Claude Code uses explicit
--dangerously-skip-permissions; Codex uses its existing full-tool execution path. No machine session, live repo, or browser account was used.Verification
