TASK-389 · S2 Control and BYO connection recovery

The owner-only Your Team card, agent profile, Bring your own flow, and Settings Control section show connection state from actual credentials and polling. A missing or revoked runtime key wins over a live machine heartbeat; a revoked or expired daemon key cannot accept a rekey request. A stale runtime poll or machine heartbeat says “Not seen in N min”. First use says “Not connected yet” without offering a misleading Reconnect.

For a computer agent, Reconnect stamps an owner-approved directive for its bound daemon. The daemon rotates its runtime token through the existing authenticated mint route, stores the replacement locally, and restarts its child once. A connected computer agent can proactively regenerate from Control. The browser never receives that daemon-owned key. A webhook agent's replacement uses the existing forced rotation route and shows the new key once. Reconnect and regeneration links preserve instanceId, including nondefault instances; a same-name local token belonging to another instance is refused instead of overwritten. Owner or admin is enforced on the server and on the UI affordance.

The public profile remains tokenless. Settings Control resolves a writable installation through the owner-scoped manage-settings endpoint from S3, then reads the roster's credential-derived verdict. Push webhooks and native agents keep their existing status.

Evidence

  • Backend service, roster, and binding tests cover live, stale, revoked, owner/admin refusal, directive delivery, daemon rotation, and expired daemon credentials.
  • Frontend tests cover owner-only actions, compact BYO, profile and Settings Control, English/Chinese labels, and nondefault instances.
  • CLI daemon supervisor tests cover one-time rekey and same-name instance refusal.
  • Frontend typecheck, backend TypeScript lint, and targeted suites pass locally. Exact-head CI and Sable/Lumen gates are required before merge.

S1 and S3 are merged. This PR is ready for exact-head Sable and Lumen gates; merge follows passing gates and CI.

📝 Walkthrough

The roster now includes derived connection states for eligible webhook and wrapper agents. Backend and CLI changes support reconnect requests and runtime-token rotation. The v2 agent views display connection status and provide reconnect controls, and the BYO form handles runtime-specific reconnect flows.

Changes: Agent Connection Status and Reconnect

Layer / File(s) Summary
Derive connection state in the agent roster
backend/services/agentConnectionStateService.ts, backend/routes/registry/pod-agents.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/agentConnectionStateService.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/registry.pod-agents-activity.test.js
The roster batches credential and machine lookups, then derives connection states for eligible agents. Tests cover credential, token, and machine activity cases.
Record and apply reconnect requests
backend/models/User.ts, backend/routes/agentBinding.ts, cli/src/lib/daemon-supervisor.js, backend/__tests__/service/agentReconnectBrowserJwt.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/agentBinding.phase2.test.js, cli/__tests__/daemon-supervisor.test.mjs, cli/package.json
The route records reconnect requests for eligible bound agents and exposes the timestamp to the assigned daemon. The CLI rotates the runtime token for the matching instance and records the applied timestamp.
Display connection states and controls
frontend/src/v2/utils/agentConnection.ts, frontend/src/i18n/locales/{en,zh-CN}.json, frontend/src/v2/components/V2YourTeamPage.tsx, frontend/src/v2/agents/V2AgentProfile.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentControlSection.tsx, frontend/src/v2/agents/V2AgentSettingsPage.tsx, frontend/src/v2/agents/*.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/agentConnection.test.ts, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2YourTeamSignal.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentProfileMemoryWrite.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentControlSection.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentSettingsPage.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts
The profile, team cards, and settings controls display localized connection states and provide reconnect or key-regeneration links when applicable. Disconnected team cards hide Answer and Talk actions.
Reconnect from the BYO form
frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentBYOName.test.tsx
The BYO form reads reconnect and machine-mode query parameters, matches roster entries by agent and instance, and routes eligible reconnects to runtime-key replacement or machine reconnect. It displays request progress and outcomes.

The revoked and stale paths read right: "Disconnected: key revoked" or "Not seen in N min" replaces the status line, Talk steps aside, and the card's one action is the ink Reconnect button. The BYO state line is a .v2-byo__hint outside any .v2-byo__field, so the focus/error-only rule doesn't hide it. No CSS changed. Four defects:

  1. A never-connected agent is offered "Reconnect". connection.state === 'never' is "disconnected" in both places. The Your Team card shows "Not connected yet" with a Reconnect button, and the compact BYO submit relabels to Reconnect. An agent that never connected can't be reconnected, and in compact BYO the button labelled Reconnect runs submit(), a fresh install, because only revoked and stale route to replaceRunningKey. So the label and the action disagree. Either leave never on the normal path with Talk and Install, or give it a Connect action. Don't call it Reconnect.
  2. The disconnected status can render in cobalt. The card keeps v2-team-card__status--${state}. When state is working or needsYou (a claimed task or an open ask on an agent whose key is revoked), "Disconnected: key revoked" renders in --v2-accent-text, the colour that means active. Use a disconnected modifier instead of the state class when disconnected is true.
  3. Compact BYO offers Reconnect to people who can't use it. The full layout gates Reconnect on installedBy === me || admin, but the compact branch relabels the submit for anyone who types the name. A non-owner then gets a force re-key the server refuses. The compact branch also always calls replaceRunningKey, while the full layout sends wrapper to submitMachine. Gate and route both branches the same way.
  4. zh stale breaks the hanzi–numeral spacing rule. It reads 已 {{count}} 分钟未连接. The rule is no space between hanzi and an adjacent placeholder, so it should be 已{{count}}分钟未连接.

Scope note for the operator, not a render defect: lily's 16:25Z update adds a Control section on the new Settings tab (TASK-378 S2). This head covers the card and the BYO page only, presumably because S1's tab shell hasn't landed yet.

#2517 TASK-389 @ df49a15 — CODE GATE: HOLD

  1. pod-agents.ts uses credentialByMachine for wrapper agents. That is the daemon credential, while agentRuntimeAuth validates the separate runtime credential keyed by agentUserId. Revoke an agent's runtime key while its machine keeps heartbeating: this response still says connected, although the agent's calls get 401. Derive the revoked verdict from the agent credential, then use the machine heartbeat for liveness. Add a route/service case for this exact split.
  2. Wrapper Reconnect calls submitMachine, which posts a placement request. For an already-bound agent that request only rewrites requestedMachineId; the daemon's ensureToken returns ready for its existing local record and does not rotate a revoked runtime key. Reconnect therefore reports placement while the key remains unusable. Wire a real rekey/restart path and test it.
  3. The TASK-389 S2 brief requires the Control section on /v2/agents/:name/:instanceId Settings. This head adds status to the public profile, card and BYO page but no Settings Control section. Land it on the S1 tab shell before re-gating.

Credit: Rivet's en/zh copy and card/BYO/profile coverage are present; focused tests and typecheck were reported green. CI for this head was still running at review time.

Render and copy review at df49a15. This supersedes e32f04c (my HOLD 5631349614).

The delta adds the profile connection line and a Reconnect action in V2AgentProfile.tsx, plus a test. It doesn't touch any of the four defects from my last review, so all four still stand.

  1. A never agent is offered "Reconnect" on the card, compact BYO and now the profile. In compact BYO that button runs a fresh install.
  2. Disconnected status text keeps v2-team-card__status--working/needsYou, so it renders in cobalt.
  3. Compact BYO relabels the submit to Reconnect for non-owners, and always calls replaceRunningKey, never submitMachine for wrapper.
  4. zh stale reads 已 {{count}} 分钟未连接; it should be 已{{count}}分钟未连接.

New in this delta:

  1. The profile's Reconnect isn't owner-only. ownedConnection is set for any signed-in viewer whose token can read /api/registry/pods/:podId/agents, which means any member of that pod. The roster route attaches connection to every webhook or wrapper agent regardless of who's asking. So any pod member sees the connection line, and for a non-connected agent the hero's primary button turns into Reconnect, replacing their Talk action, for a key they can't re-issue. Gate it on installedBy === me || admin, as the card already does.

The public, unauthenticated profile stays tokenless, as stated.

Apply the same ownership and runtime checks in the compact form.

The full form shows Reconnect only when installedBy matches the current user or the user is an admin. It also routes wrapper runtimes to submitMachine. This compact branch does neither.

  • Any member who opens the deep link can trigger replaceRunningKey. This includes non-installers.
  • A wrapper agent that matches in the roster gets a runtime token minted. That is the wrong flow for a computer-placed agent.

Extract one predicate, for example canReconnect, and one handler. Use them in both forms.

Clear existingConnection when a new name starts the roster lookup.

The effect clears the stored verdict only when the name is empty or untouched (line 270). When the name changes to another nonempty value, the effect starts a new 250 ms timer and does not clear the old verdict. The old verdict stays visible until the new roster request resolves. During that window, the Reconnect buttons read the old connection.state, runtimeType, and installedBy, but they use the current name. A click can therefore apply the old verdict to a different agent. For wrapper runtimes, the full button calls submitMachine with the new name. Other runtimes use the key-replacement path. The compact button calls key replacement directly for revoked or stale states.

Call setExistingConnection(null) after the early return and before the timer starts.

Carry the agent instance through the reconnect link and the BYO form.

The reconnect link selects the agent by name and pod only. The profile's connection state comes from the roster row for the agent's instanceId. The reconnect screen then selects a roster row by name alone and rotates the runtime key without an instance. For an agent with a non-default instanceId, the reconnect can act on a different instance than the one the profile shows.

Suggested fix
-              to={`/v2/agents/byo?pod=${encodeURIComponent(ownedConnection.podId)}&name=${encodeURIComponent(agent.agentName)}&reconnect=1${ownedConnection.runtimeType === 'wrapper' ? '&mode=machine' : ''}`}>

The BYO reconnect screen must also read instanceId from the query string. It must match the roster row by both name and instanceId. It must send instanceId in the body of the POST /api/registry/pods/:podId/agents/:name/runtime-tokens request. The backend route already accepts instanceId in that body.

Keep Answer available for stale and never-connected agents.

handleAnswer navigates to the pending ask’s message or to /v2/activity; it does not require an active agent connection. The current condition hides this action for every state except connected, including stale and never.

Keep the existing revoked behavior, which the test defines as a single Reconnect action. Render Answer for other needsYou cards.

Add tests for the roster branches that this change introduces.

The only new route test covers a revoked webhook credential. These changed branches have no coverage:

  • The connectionAvailable = false fallback. Make AgentCredential.find reject and assert a 200 response with no connection field. The PR description promises this behavior.
  • The wrapper path. It reads credentialByMachine and Machine.find().lastSeenAt through botMetadata.machineId.
  • The webhook agent with a configured webhookUrl. It must stay without connection.

As per path instructions: "missing tests for changed behaviour."

Ask for confirmation before rotating the key of a stale agent.

For revoked, no key is running, so a direct rotation is safe. A stale connection means only that no poll arrived in 5 minutes. A BYO or MCP agent that is idle can still hold a live key.

replaceRunningKey here uses force: true and skips the pendingReplacement flow. The comment at Lines 617-618 says to "ask for an explicit replacement" before revoking a running key. The same bypass exists in the compact form (Lines 937-938).

For stale, call setPendingReplacement and let the existing confirmation screen run. Keep the direct path for revoked only.

Render + copy gate at 0667b2a, on main 185fd8d (#2519 merged). This is a code read; Playwright was not run.

All five defects from my HOLD at df49a15 are fixed:

  1. never no longer offers Reconnect. needsReconnect is revoked | stale on the card, the Control section, the profile and BYO canReconnect.
  2. A disconnected card no longer uses the cobalt status class. visualState is idle (muted) whenever connection.state !== 'connected', and the dot is dropped.
  3. BYO Reconnect is owner/admin-gated (canReconnect), and isOtherOwner hides the submit. Wrapper agents route to requestMachineReconnect.
  4. zh stale is now 已{{count}}分钟未连接 (no spaces).
  5. Profile Reconnect only renders when viewerRole is owner/admin, from the authenticated roster.

The Settings Control section is good: one ink action (a.v2-agent-settings__action, (0,2,1) + a, beats .v2-root a), Regenerate is hidden while disconnected, and the checking/unavailable states read cleanly. The card Reconnect uses button.v2-team-card__answer (ink).

Two new defects:

  1. Profile Reconnect renders cobalt. V2AgentProfile renders Reconnect as <Link className="v2-aprofile__btn v2-aprofile__btn--primary">, which takes .v2-aprofile__btn--primary { background: var(--v2-accent) }. That puts cobalt on the recovery action for a fault state, which Signal forbids (filled app controls are ink; cobalt is never a fault state). It also diverges from the card and Settings Reconnect, which are both ink. It stays wrong after #2526, whose ink rule is button.-qualified and this is an <a>. Fix: give it an ink rule that beats .v2-root a and the accent rule, e.g. .v2-root a.v2-aprofile__btn--reconnect { background: var(--v2-ink); border-color: var(--v2-ink); color: var(--v2-on-ink); } plus hover, and pin it in the invariants.

  2. The Settings tab contradicts itself for a connected wrapper agent. Control shows a "Regenerate key" action (canRegenerateMachineKey), while the Key section head still says agentSettings.wrapperReconnect: "Key replacement is unavailable here for locally connected agents." The reader is told both things on one screen. Fix: point that line at Control, or drop it now that Control owns the path. For example, "Replace this computer's key from Control." / "请在「控制」中替换这台电脑的密钥。"

Non-blocking: on the full BYO form, a non-owner who types another owner's agent name sees the connection label and no button, with no line saying why. It's fine to leave for a follow-up.

#2517 TASK-389 at 0667b2a — HOLD

  1. backend/routes/agentBinding.ts:282-295: the new reconnect route treats req.user.role as admin authority. Browser JWT auth sets req.user = { id } (backend/middleware/auth.ts:130-132), so a real instance admin who did not install the agent enters ownsAgent and receives 403. The test supplies a synthetic req.user.role in its auth mock (agentBinding.phase2.test.js:11-12, 266-271), so its admin case cannot catch this. Read the stored User role as the adjacent manage-settings route does and cover a JWT-shaped admin request.

  2. frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx:281-290, 623-629, 718-726: on the ordinary BYO page, the roster lookup matches only the name unless ?reconnect=1. If a name has multiple instances, the connection hint/Reconnect action can be selected from one instance while the request rotates prefill.instanceId (normally default). That can target a different running key. Carry the matched instance into the action, or require an exact instance match throughout; cover a same-name multi-instance roster.

Credit: the new credential-backed wrapper state, daemon directive, and Settings Control address the earlier HOLDs. These two boundary mismatches still prevent a safe pass at this head.

Render + copy re-gate at 01a80db, a fast-forward from my HOLD at 0667b2a via 8f9d0f9 and 01a80db.

Note: the full SHA in the pod ask (01a80db0b8c4ec98…) doesn't exist on the remote. This is the PR's actual head, which shares only the short prefix.

Both HOLD defects are fixed:

  1. Profile Reconnect is ink. The Link adds v2-aprofile__btn--reconnect, and .v2-root a.v2-aprofile__btn--reconnect { background: var(--v2-ink); border-color: var(--v2-ink); color: var(--v2-on-ink) } is (0,2,1). It beats .v2-aprofile__btn--primary (0,1,0) and .v2-root .v2-aprofile__btn--primary (0,2,0), and the hover is ink-hover. It's pinned in v2-layout-invariants and now matches the card and Settings Reconnect.
  2. The wrapper copy no longer contradicts Control. agentSettings.wrapperReconnect is "Replace this computer's key from Control." / 请在「控制」中替换这台电脑的密钥。 and points the reader at the action shown above it. The zh uses 「」 quotes for the section name, with no spacing issues.

01a80db is a lookup change (BYO now matches instanceId === prefill.instanceId exactly) plus tests. It changes which row supplies the status, not how anything renders.

Still non-blocking, for the follow-up: on the full BYO form, a non-owner who types another owner's agent name sees the status and no button, with no line explaining why.

No blocking render or copy defects.

#2517 TASK-389 at 01a80db — PASS

The two code HOLDs from review 5632358591 are cleared at this head. The merged main auth middleware supplies req.user.role from the stored session account for browser JWTs; the new real-auth service test exercises an admin reconnect (200) and a non-owner refusal (403). Ordinary BYO now matches both name and the selected instanceId, so a different same-name instance cannot drive a default-instance rekey; the focused UI regression covers that boundary. I checked the delta from the held head and git diff --check on the PR diff.

Credit: the credential-backed connection state, daemon rekey directive, and Settings Control from the held head remain intact. Lumen's render gate is separate.

CLI lane gate for #2517 at 01a80db0bf7708d15ef279a8795a94b3dc906280. cli/ delta: daemon-supervisor.js +31, a supervisor test, and a version bump to 0.1.134.

  • Instance guard. A local token record whose instanceId (default 'default') differs from the placement row's is now refused before any rotate or launch. Local records are keyed by agent name only, so this stops one seat's bearer from being overwritten by a same-name sibling. I checked the host's 54 token records: 53 carry instanceId and 1 falls back to 'default', so no running seat on this host flips to refused.
  • Owner-requested rotation. This runs only when reconnectRequestedAt is newer than the record's reconnectRequestAppliedAt. It mints through the daemon's own /api/agent-binding/runtime-token with rotate: true and saves the applied stamp, so it fires once per request. On failure it logs and returns false without touching the record. A revoked daemon credential (TASK-279) makes the mint fail, which is the right outcome.
  • The version (0.1.134) is above main's 0.1.132. Batch order puts #2445 at 0.1.133 first, so this lands after it.

Gate connection to the installer or an admin.

GET /pods/:podId/agents is open to every pod viewer. That includes members and users who reach the pod through an agent DM, via DMService.canViewPod. The new code attaches connection for every viewer. The PR objective says this state is owner-only. As written, any pod member receives the credential-derived revoked and stale verdicts and lastSeenAt.

The frontend only gates the Reconnect button. V2YourTeamPage renders connectionLabel for every viewer. Withholding connection for non-owners enforces the rule on the server. Non-owners then keep the existing status path.

Compute isGlobalAdmin = await isGlobalAdminUser(userId) once before res.json. Then change the guard:

Proposed fix
-        if (!connectionAvailable || !user || !['webhook', 'wrapper'].includes(runtimeType)
+        const canSeeConnection = isGlobalAdmin || String(i.installedBy || '') === String(userId);
+        if (!connectionAvailable || !canSeeConnection || !user || !['webhook', 'wrapper'].includes(runtimeType)

Add a backend test for a non-installer viewer. The expected result is no connection field.

Block the Install action for a reconnect link that has no matching connection.

With reconnect=1 and a prefilled name, the name-ready shortcut sets namesReady without a lookup. The Install button is then enabled even when no connection matches instanceId. Install submits without instanceId, so the agent can be installed and its token issued for default, not for the linked instance.

Suggested fix

Flush the roster state update before the negative assertions.

The resolved roster promise runs before waitFor returns, but React Testing Library 16.3.0 only drains microtasks in its asyncWrapper; it does not wrap the final update in act. The setExistingConnection render can therefore still be pending when these assertions run. A regression that ignores instanceId may escape this test.

This is a test-coverage improvement. It does not show a current production failure.

Suggested fix

+import { act, render, screen, fireEvent, waitFor } from '@testing-library/react';

Render + copy re-stamp at 4899b4b, rebased onto main 9514300 (#2505 and #2445 merged). Previous PASS was at 01a80db.

Range-diff 01a80db vs 4899b4b: every commit is = except two:

  • ef07eb6 (was 9c546c5) is a test-only conflict resolution in V2YourTeamSignal.test.tsx, keeping main's Hire-an-agent test alongside the revoked-card test.
  • 387a39c (was 0667b2a) is the cli version, from 0.1.133 to 0.1.134 (version lines only).

No component, CSS or locale content changed in the rebase. Both fixes from my last pass (profile Reconnect in ink, wrapper line pointing to Control) carry over unchanged.

Process note: #2525 also claims cli 0.1.134. Whichever presses second needs the version-only bump you said you'd make by hand.

No render or copy defects.

#2517 TASK-389 at 4899b4b: PASS

Re-stamp of my code PASS at 01a80db. git range-diff shows all production code commits patch-equivalent after the rebase. The sole test conflict kept the merged Your Team navigation assertion alongside the revoked, never-connected, and stale connection assertions. CLI package and lockfile now both carry 0.1.134, one above main's 0.1.133. git diff --check is clean; the PR head is mergeable.

Credit: the rebase preserves the prior browser-JWT authorization, exact instance lookup, and reconnect code gate. Rivet reports focused frontend 27/27 and typecheck passing; CI is green at this head. Lumen's render gate is separate.

Delta re-stamp of my render/behaviour gate for S2 (connection state) at head b3d418cf8b15a99503e5576295bc4ae937fdc6bc. My PASS was at 4899b4b3.

Rebase. Range-diff of 4899b4b3 against origin/main..b3d418cf: 17 of the 18 commits are =. The one exception is 14/18, "mount connection Control in agent Settings". In that commit only the import hunk changed: it now sits beside main's V2AgentRuntimeGrants, { Runtime } import from #2527. Every other hunk in that commit applied unchanged.

Settings tab at this head, in render order:

  1. AgentControlLoader (Connection). Same position as at 4899b4b3, above Key.
  2. Key section. Unchanged.
  3. V2AgentWakePods. Unchanged.
  4. V2AgentRuntimeGrants, from main. It keeps its key, runtime derivation and onSaveRuntime exactly as #2527 merged them.

All four sections are present. Each side's sections are present in full, and none was dropped or reordered in the merge. Behaviour is unchanged from my PASS.

CI. At filing, Frontend tests, E2E, Backend and CLI were still pending at this head, so this verdict covers code and render only. The press should wait for green.

Refresh connection state while Settings remains open.

AgentControlLoader fetches the roster only when its effect dependencies change. If an agent stops checking in while Settings remains open, the connection verdict and disconnected value retain the earlier state. Poll the roster and deliver each new state to onConnectionState, with cleanup when the agent changes or the loader unmounts. Add a test that advances a connected agent to stale without remounting the page.
